Wow.
Is this this summer's curry house thread?
Anyone finding that photocopiers are becoming equally redundant?
I'm frequently being sent documents photo'd by people's smartphones.

NB: The BBC reporting that Leeds are two up in the Olympics today.

Back in the day before we had photocopiers - yes Junior, there once was such a
time - we duplicated handouts, newsletters etc. on a machine with a rotating
drum (I think).
What was the machine and the process called. Can't remember at all.

[LU] 04-March-1972. Southampton

2021-06-26 Thread johnbarber
On a nostalgia trip, I found a good quality video of that game against
Southampton.
It was uploaded in Apr'20 so it might be new to some of you.
35mins of highlights.
It's been converted to widescreen, so presumably the top and bottom of the
original MOTD video has been cut off, but it doesn't seem to be detrimental to
what you see.
Some quick close-up shots of the crowd here and there, so you might get to spot
a long-missed relative, or a younger version of yourself.
The passing sequence at the end of the game is rightly remembered, but there's
another after the fourth goal that it just sublime. "Oh, so easy" says Barry
Davies at the start of it.

[LU] FA Cup. Manchester vs Leeds United. 1951

2020-08-13 Thread johnbarber
Now that we’re in the same division as Manchester again, I’m just wondering
if there’s much to dislike about them anymore.

None of their players raise my hackles, Marcus Rashford is positively a
National Treasure, and the Baby-Faced Assassin is pretty likeable too.

Maybe I need some motivation.

Here’s a Pathé Newsreel from 1951:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7D0XLwBgf3k

It’s not the 4-0 scoreline, we’re Second Division to their First after all
***, no, it’s the Pathé commentary, it thoroughly winds me up.

Is it too late to write to them and complain?

*** Although I would expect Richard Walker to come down heavily on the
goalkeeping, own goal for the first, handling error maybe for the second.

The poor defending from corners seems to be an LU tradition, and I can’t
tell if John Charles is involved. If he is, I don’t recognise him, and I’d
like to think if he was playing, he’d help keep the score down.

Re: [LU] Big Jack RIP - massive influence on my life

2020-07-11 Thread johnbarber
Hi Dave,

A few elements of your story are similar to mine.
It's 1966, World Cup time. I'm 7 and beginning to become aware of football.
Booby Charlton is my first favourite player, and by association Manchester are
my favourite team.
However, my Mancunian parents are always calling me their little Yorkshireman,
me having been born in York, and it soon became unacceptable to me to support a
Lancashire team.
Once I learned Bobby had a brother Jackie, and that he played for a Yorkshire
team, you can add another Leeds United fan to the list.

Big Jack tried to kill me at my first ever Leeds game.
1970 I think. Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace.
At the end of the warm up, the practice balls are kicked back to the dugout.
I'd been watching Jack, and he sliced his ball higher than high, and it's
coming back down to earth directly at me.
I'm just mesmerised by it, like a rabbit in the headlights. I can't defend
myself, I can't get out of the way...
Fortunately, lots of adult hands patted the ball away.
That game was famous for a Gary Sprake handling error right at the end, gifting
Palace a draw.

Subject: [LU] Big Jack RIP - massive influence on my life

Was shocked but not surprised to hear of the death of another true Leeds United
legend, but there is something different about this one. Jack is THE reason I
am a Leeds fan , When I was around 4 or 5 years old being brought up in a ManU
supporting household with an elder brother I heard a lot about Bobby Charlton.
When I found out he had a brother, my young brain went, ' if my brother
supports Bobby, I will support Jack, ' and hence a Leeds fan was born.
I was lucky enough to meet Jack at the world cup in Spain in 82. We sat with
him in a bar on a pier and chatted for a while. Of course I explained how and
why I was a Leeds fan, which he found amusing, and I had him in stitches when I
finished my story by saying " thank fuck you did not play for Crewe"
He was a top bloke and was happy to chat A postscript to the story was as we
left a group of young boys were outside the pier thing and one of us told them
" Jackie Charlton is in there They all ran in shouting " Bobby Charlton, Bobby
Charlton " , next thing we see is Jack and the TV bloke with him running off
pursued by a gang of kids So as a Leeds fan of 45 years of active support, and
going to Leeds university purely so I could get to games, and everything that
flows from that (job I got, mates I have etc etc) are all down to big Jack.
If i had never heard of him i could have been a scum fan and celebrated all
those trophies or could have been the family rebel and followed City and
celebrated all their trophies but FUCK EM ALL- being a Leeds United fan is
special so THANKS JACK I owe you loads RIP Dave

[LU] Trivia Question from Heimbane

2020-04-28 Thread johnbarber
I've been watching a TV series from Norway called "Heimbane".

It's another in the "Female Coach/Male Football Team" genre.

I don't think it's been on British TV, nor on a Netflix-type streaming
service, and the only subtitles I've found are less than perfect.

In Heimbane there's a character called Eddie (played by Per Jan Vinje) who
is the club's groundsman and prop master.

He's also a very enthusiastic Leeds United fan and appears in every episode
wearing a different Leeds shirt.

In the episode I watched last night, he posed a trivia question to the team.

No answer was provided, so I'm wondering if anyone here can figure it out.

Here goes, pasted from the subtitles:

00:12:51,560 --> 00:12:56,780

Question 14:

what former Leeds player

00:12:56,780 --> 00:13:02,820

Quite a few Leeds-related questions...

- The kids must learn.

00:13:02,820 --> 00:13:11,860

Ok... what former Leeds player

played also for Sunderland, Arsenal and Manchester City?

00:13:11,860 --> 00:13:15,900

It's a trick question.

Re: [LU] Norman H

2020-04-18 Thread johnbarber
Whilst a lot of channels were listing Norman's honours yesterday, I don't think
any mentioned that he was the inaugural "Player's Player of the Year".
I always thought that his fellow professionals voting for him above anyone
else, ought to put the "Dirty Leeds" allegations into some sort of perspective.

My favourite memory: towards the end of the seventies he returned to Elland
Road with Bristol City. There was a lot warmth for him with songs being sung.
When a particularly robust tackle got him a yellow card, the songs went up in
volume and he had to sheepishly acknowledge the crowd.

Re: [LU] Silver lining?

2020-03-29 Thread johnbarber
Yep.
It seems very unfair to cancel competitions or stop them where they are now.
My preference: whenever it should be, this season's competitions should be
completed as originally structured, and it is next season that you re-structure.
For example, say we resume in November, we play the remaining games and gain,
or fail to get promotion, whatever. The new season can kick off in January, and
if you aim to finish by May, you might re-structure each division by splitting
into two groups, and eventually sort out titles, promotion and relegation with
play-offs.

Better ideas, anyone?

Re: [LU] another new crest / badge

2018-01-24 Thread johnbarber
Lurkdom mode - OFF.

Once we abandoned the City of Leeds badge, sometime in the 1960's I think, we
then seemed to change our badge every other year.
It wasn't until the "rose and ball" one - the one we won the 1992 Championship
with - that we settled down to some season after season continuity.
It lasted a good few seasons, long enough, I thought, to establish itself as
our "new" traditional badge. I'd love for that one to return.
I never took to Ridsdale's living the (European) dream replacement.

The current proposal? Supposedly it's for our 100th anniversary.
I could buy into it, if it was only for the one season, and perhaps if the hand
on the chest was a hand over our traditional badge... whatever that is.
If it mobilises support and enthusiasm and helps us get back to the top level
in time for our 100th year, then maybe we should endorse it. Doesn't sound as
if it will though.
Celebrating the Leeds salute? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have the
uncomfortable feeling that it started appearing when the NF were trying to take
over our terraces at the end of the 1970s
So for me it's bit too close to a Nazi salute to be totally at ease with it.

Finally, a question on the 100th anniversary that I've been meaning to ask.
Didn't Ken Bates' shenanigans kill off the 1919 club?
Isn't the club we're supporting now some new creation of his, barely 10 years
old?

Regards everyone

John
