[LU] Decimalisation Day!
Folks, A lot of ye will remember that day. I don't...just that bit too young! 240 (20 shillings, each with 12) pence in a pound became only 100. Any funny stories? Re: [LU] Decimalisation Day!
Funny stories no, but memories yes. I used to live near to White Hart Lane and after football matches we'd work through the thousands of discarded cigarette boxes in the hope that we'd find a cigarette or two that we would then try to sell. I only remember being successful once. For the rest of that 1971 football season though, we'd ask the people coming out of games if they had any old pennies they didn't want (and couldn't spend). However for a few months you could actually still spend them in multiples of 6. We'd easily make a good shilling each at the start because nobody begrudged the odd penny that they couldn't spend to little kids. However, the happy memories of that Spring were soon overshadowed by West Bludy Brom. Damian On Mon, Feb 15, 2021 at 1:51 PM James A. Re: [LU] Decimalisation Day!
Yeah, I remember decimalisation, some people used it as an excuse for ripping people off. For instance prior to decimalisation it cost 3s 6d to go in the Kop and afterwards it went up to 50p! A 285% increase, robbing bastards!!! Graham White On Monday, 15 February 2021, 18:35:46 CET, Damian Walsh wrote: Funny stories no, but memories yes. Re: [LU] Decimalisation Day!
Are you sure there's not a time lens distortion there? At Tottenham it was 3'6 too at that time (1'6 for a reserve match - the only ones I went to on my own) but that was for boys. It was still 17 1/2 np after decimalisation, still for boys. I'll ask mi dad but I think adult prices were round the 8 or 9 shillings mark. Did you grow up in the summer of 1971? Did you go back to Elland Road in the autumn as a man? :) Damian On Tue, Feb 16, 2021 at 12:53 PM Graham White wrote: > Yeah, I remember decimalisation, some people used it as an excuse for > ripping people off. Re: [LU] Decimalisation Day!
I seem to remember it was 6/6 in the Kop, but I don’t think they had a boys entrance. It was 5/6 in the Lowfields & 3/- for boys. This may have been a bit before decimalisation, though. When I first started going at the end of 1967 we stood in the Shed, then we progressed to the Lowfields. I had a season ticket in the West Stand Paddock for a bit and started going in the Kop around 1973. Re: [LU] Decimalisation Day!
I remember going with my Dad in the Lowfields in the late 60s and he paid 7 and 6, I went in another (boys?) entrance lower down and paid 3 shillings. We met up on the other side of the turnstiles and we went to get our usual place near the halfway line. (I'm sure after '71 I still paid 15p to go in the boys entrance) We'd go in to the ground as soon as the gates opened (12-1ish?) to try and get a place against the wall so I could see. We also took a small wooden step/stool that my Dad made for me to stand on to get a better view. (A common thing in those days) No health & safety nonsense in those times!!! Re: [LU] Decimalisation Day!
I do not remember pre-decimilisation money at all, but for some reason I vividly remember the day of decimilisation and going in the local sweet shop with new money. Odd. But I was 6 1/2 years old Nick On Tuesday, February 16, 2021, 03:14:49 PM EST, Ted wrote: I remember going with my Dad in the Lowfields in the late 60s and he paid 7 and 6, I went in another (boys?) entrance lower down and paid 3 shillings.
