Have they sacked the manager yet?

Excellent result obviously. Sick of all the anti-Bamford tripe tbh, especially
so when you consider how many chances Summerville misses? Hope Bamford can get
a couple of goals soon to shut the trolls up!

No one is pointing out that we saw something we have not seen for ages-- team
management
A game plan for the game according to needs and ability.
A very smart and brave subbing.
The team was and is still under pressure. But when that pressure went we saw
what will be. Rutter is simply a bonnie footballer. There is so much talent
there waiting to flower.
We kept a clean sheet not by fluke and when one up we played the situation
well.
We need time & a modicum of luck

Yeah, McKennie/Adams is a foundation that needs to be built on; what needs to
happen now is to drill ways of creating chances into the team - you know, like
how Bill used to bring the ball forward and give it to Raph, who’d lay it off
inside of him, at which point Bill would either run with it, play it forward to
Paddy or play it back to Raph on the wing, depending on which looked better as
the team moved forward and stretched the play…

Agreed.
I don’t see the Adams / McKennie lack of creativity as necessarily a bad thing.
They are both solid defensively and steady in possession. It gives us a solid
platform to build on and as long as we can find creativity in other areas we’ll
still create chances.
I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Roca so far. The frantic, rushed style of
Marsch doesn’t really suit him. Hopefully a more patient, structured build up
will play to his strengths more.

Could we hang on, could we get a second ? The first  bit was easy as they

Not much to add to that Dave.
I thought we looked far more controlled in possession, apparently our pass
success rate what 85% which is higher than in any of the games Marsch managed.
I was pleased that we avoided giving away any daft free kicks near the box for
Ward Prowse to exploit.
I think this is also the only time I can remember where we’ve been leading by a
goal going into injury time and haven’t given up a single chance.
Still question marks about a few of our players, specifically Aaronson and
Harrison but on the plus side, Koch dominated their 6’7” forward abd Wober was
excellent again. There’s not much creativity in the Adams / McKennie
partnership but they are very difficult to play through. Both very quick to
close down and tackle. I wonder what Gracia does when Roca is fully fit - maybe
he plays instead of Aaronson and McKennie plays at 10.
It’s easy to get carried away after winning but Southampton we’re truly awful.
Hopefully we put up a good showing in the cup and take some good form to

The fans were pretty much solidly behind the team and gave them every
encouragement although there was a very nervous feel to it all and plenty of
groans as Harrison and Bamford had shockers. Koch and Wober were untroubled at
the back however and 0 0 started to look like it was nailed on, a result that
would not have helped us.
Then some quality, Summerville had the ball out wide by the corner flag ( are
you watching Jesse?) and hemmed in by two players put a lovely ball through to
Harrison, who redeemed himself a bit with a lovely back heel to Firpo who took
one touch then lashed it home, ok maybe not lashed but he shot on target and
the ball trickled through a defender and under the keeper. Cue absolute
pandemonium, the crowd went wild, " junior Firpo s name reverberated around ER.
Could we hang on, could we get a second ? The first bit was easy as they
offered nothing and the clock ran down. As for a second goal a flick on by
Rutter set Summerville free and his shot flew just wide , at 0 0 he would have
got stick for not passing to the unmarked Harrison but at 1 up with seconds to
go we forgave him. The final whistle went and we had won. The after match
atmosphere was amazing , singing on the bus and proper party time at Moots
Hall, incredible how a win makes everything great ( did I mention we WON)

So not the greatest, but 3 points was all that mattered and we got them all. So
out of the bottom 3. The new manager has work to do but this gives him a
platform, we need more from Bamford, Harrison needs to get back to his best,
aaranson still needs to bulk up, and Mckennie and Adams need to shoot more, but
in a game we had to win, we WON and for a few days at least all is well with
the world

Re: [LU] Southampton - WE WON

2023-02-26 Thread John Boocock
The view from the armchair was pretty good too. As Dave says we won, and
when me and my mate Broughie entered one of our two local pubs we let
everyone know (especially the Crag Rats who seem to descend on the
Northern Pennines more often still since Lockdown.

I am still not convinced by Aaranson, he has flashes of brilliance but
then quickly goes off the boil. I am very impressed with Wobel, he is
fit, hard to beat and accurate. Broughie and I thought that Ayling
(apart from his shot at row W -and even that failed) is playing well
recently, although his best is probably only 85% in some people's eyes,
but we are where we are.

Some great work rates on the field too. I haven't seen the stats but it
looked to me as if we had the better of all the one on ones. The
shithouserie from Southampton shows just how desperate they are. That
big galoot they have up front cost them £18 mill, remind me again how
much Willie cost.

Very satisfied as my hangover this morning proves.

We won!

I blame VAR for the lack of celebrations. I thought the ball was out so
assumed VAR would call it off. When it didn't/wasn't I was oh a goal!

A pretty poor game and hard to know if it was one point gained or two lost in
our relegation fight , but Ward-Priwse and his free kick certainly cost us this
game as without that they never looked like scoring.
It was a very flat atmosphere throughout,  even the goal , was not subject to
the 'limbs'we have had recently,  the 2 goals v scum and the winner v Norwich,
or even jumping round my front room v Wolves. The goal came when Raph just
managed to keep the ball in and crossed , the keeper got a hand to it but it
fell to Harrison who seemed to shin it in, certainly not a clean strike.
In boxing they often say it is ' styles that make fights ' thus was the
opposite in that the styles ( both similar) made it a non fight, or a bore draw
in this case.
Once they equalised it had draw written all over it , and the crowd responded
with apathy , occasionally getting excited or nervous depending on who had the
ball in attack but generally just waiting for it to be over.
We had some good points from the game , Cooper managed 90 minutes and looked
cool and composed throughout,  Rodrigo had another very good game, Joffy showed
that though he cant pull a rabbit from the hat every game he is definitely a
real talent,  and perhaps most importantly of all KP was back, getting 25
minutes or so, not that he did much in that time but hopefully it means he can
start next week, a real 6 pointer.
With Burnley and Watford losing ( hope the same today for Norwich and Everton))
a point may be ok but I would be much happier with such a boring game if we had
got all 3

Re: [LU] Southampton tonight

2021-02-24 Thread nattan--- via Leedslist
That ended up being fun. Yes a shaky first half  where VAR saved us from a
shocking refereeing decision,   their other 'goal' was a joke , you can't take
it early and moan when not given!
As my son texted me " even if their cheating penalty had stood and they score,
and their cheating free kick  had stood , we would still have won 3-2 ( we
wouldn't of course since goals change games )

I think our results , and performances,  this season have been nothing short of
exceptional  . We bought 4 , on paper, class players to boost the squad,  and
all have looked the part ( maybe too soon to decide re Llorente,  but he grew
into the game yesterday)and 3 have been injured for most of it., so we have
been doing it with championship players plus Raphinha.  He had better stay so
we can watch him in the flesh next  season - he will  even have the West stand
on their feet, what a talent

So 35 pts , enough to keep villa up last time with 13 to go. My only concerns
are the pich - both possible injury wise and it does not help our game, plus,
once the players believe they are safe will they give it 100% in training every
day ?
The "speculation " re Beilsa annoyed me - his lengthy explanation cleared
everything up , he wants to stay, we want him to stay,  the owner wants him to
stay,  so he is staying  but with 13 games left it is too soon to be 100 per
cent sure that things will not change  - I suppose it is different to the " can
Leeds sustain the energy levels, and is  Bamford good enough ( both yes by the
way)

I really like the way we are starting to get home wins against these
mid-table johnnies without even playing that well.

Even though that's tongue in cheek (?) - to be fair - it doesn't bother me!

If I'm being honest - like a lot of people my age (late 40's - early 50's)
although no major hooligan, I was no angel at football in the 70's. It was
a damn site more exciting than the sterile muted games we witness today.
Obviously I'm not condoning violence, but the youth of today have no idea
when it comes to levels of excitement.

Probably sounds worse than I mean - but I guess you know what I'm saying.

Now I'm older (and fatter), I'm quite glad I can sit down at games and go to
away matches without worrying about how fast I can run! I'm just sorry that
the younger set can't experience what it was like in the old days for an
adrenalin buzz!
