it'll be very dirty and full of drama.

Re: [LU] World Cup

2014-06-30 Thread Brendan McWilliams
If you were English then of course the Scotland match would have been
enjoyable, not to mention the whalloping the Dutch got and the 4-1.

Otherwise my memories of that tournament were low scoring in general and the
knockout stages being absolutely dire.

Don't remember much apart from the England games. The semi with the Germans was
pretty good as I recall. Apart from the result.

Re: [LU] World Cup

2010-12-03 Thread Dr. Michael Benjamin
It was.
It now isn't.
Once you had no idea what the interviewers personal opinion was, but you did
know what the person being interviewed opinions were.
Now it is the complete opposite.
They hector and bully the people they interview and you are only used on a
programme if you 'contribute' to the guiding directors opinion. If not you are
edited out.
They are out to make points. But it's their points. Part of the 'group think'.
Single handed the BBC has cheapened journalism. There is no longer freedom of
expression.
There is a monopoly on opinions. And the BBC was in the vanguard.
To add insult to injury they vilify those who don't share their opinion and
glorify their own and their actions.
As an ex pat I am deeply ashamed of this transformation from something that
was something to be proud of.

Re: [LU] World Cup

2010-12-04 Thread sinister dexter
The papers are worse, they just make it up to sell papers. Sky are no better,
I've seen therir footage of some of the protests I've photographed of late cut
together in a completely arse about face to the actual proceedings on the day.
Best take in as much as you can and extrapolate a semblance of the truth from
it is about all you can do.

As for FIFA? shower of corrupt bastards like UEFA and the FA. Did anyone really
think the WC would be awarded here? I think the only thing that might have
given us a chance would have been to submit to Splatters dream of a British FA.

Shaun Harvey just has the arse about a freebie on top of the Gelderd End.

Sorry...I'm a bit behind b/c I have been in London watching my daughter
performing in "Anything Goes" at the Bloomsbury Theatre. (unnecessary detail
added by Proud Dad!) (Another unnecessary detail...had to drive there &
back after our flight was cancelled on Fri night..2,200 km roundtrip
Munich to London!)

Anyway..I have been sifting through all the emails. Surprised to find
so many headed "Qatar" as we have just accepted jobs there starting in August.
Butamongst the usual sentimental and sanctimonious drivel from Mad
Dr. Mike, I could not let his attack on the BBC go unremarked. I know, from
having lived in Occupied Palestine, that the two media organisations which are
most widely reviled in that country are the BBC and The
Guardian.purely because they dare to question the propaganda and
spin put out by the Israeli government concerning Palestine. Inevitable that
MDM would wade in with a broadside against the BBC if given half a chance.

Re: [LU] World Cup positive

Interesting parallel David, as Cara has kind of got into the World Cup after
showing zero interest in football ever. Will have to co-ordinate going to
Elland Rd again - all 4 of us will go - I keep telling Trace that if I have to
suffer, we all do :-)

Well after some initial reticence I'm thoroughly enjoying the World Cup and
would agree with all the positive comments on here about it.  My favourite team
so far have been Chile - hard working, fabulous team ethic, skilled

but Argentina or Brazil.

And one positive from the tournament is that watching it has rekindled my
youngest son's interest in football.  His interest in attending ER with me had
all but disappeared over the last couple of seasons (not a surprise I suppose),
but thanks to the World Cup that interest has now been rekindled, and we plan
to go together next season. Yes I know the football at ER will be like watching
Iran's C team, but hey, it's a positive outcome, and who knows how many more
young supporters are brought into or back to the game after watch the World Cup?

Re: [LU] World Cup - anyone interested?

2014-06-11 Thread David Brennan
Bah-World-Cup-Humbug!

No, you're right Ian, I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I watch it - and at least the
quality of football might be a bit better than we're used to watching at ER.

I've just participated in the sweep at work, and got Cameroon and Portugal.
Come on Cameroon (can't support Portugal with that shitbag in it, not even if
the sweep kitty was 4000 quid, not 40!).

Don't be a miserable bastard!!

I'm watching. Lallana is as English as you or me.

This is the first time I've actually been interested in a while. Greedy
uncaring 'golden generation' have largely fucked off and we have going hungry
players - just before the money ruins them.

100% agree.

Watching it with no hope of success but with a chance to see the old guard
cleared out and new youngsters coming through. Refreshing

Got some sympathy with you there DRB. I onlty watched Brazil after the Leeds
Rhinos game, and what I saw of the refereeing made me wonder what's the point.
Talk about home-team decisions - the penalty was ridiculous, as were many other
calls I saw. Put together with the fact that quality diving is clearly going to
pay, then we're going to see plenty of red cards and stupid decisions. Jordan
Henderson/Raheem Sterling - sort your tackling out

Re: [LU] World Cup - anyone interested?

2014-06-13 Thread David Brennan
I thought the refereeing so blatantly one sided, and the Croatian keeper's
efforts so half hearted, I wondered if they both secured their pensions last
night, via a nice payment from some dodgy gambling syndicate!

Matt Smith must be hoping that that Japanese ref officiates at all his games,
cause he'd never get sent off for elbowing an opponent ever again, whether
deliberate or not.

Where's Pierre Luigi Collina when you need him?
