As part of Refugee Week, the Darebin Greens are staging a

'MOCK IMPRISONMENT'

of women and children, to highlight the plight of these 'invisible people'
in immigration detention centres.

Saturday, 13th October, 11am at Preston Market
(Melways Melways map 18 G11)
Murray Road side, in the space between Coles supermarket and the Market,
outside Speciality Meats and the Party Supplies Shop

**Local mother and Greens candidate for Batman in the upcoming federal
election, Alex. Bhathal, will introduce the imprisonment.

Women and children speakers needed especially in languages other than
English (Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Vietnamese) - people to read aloud case
studies and a child or young person who can read selections from the UN
Convention on the Rights of the Child.

# This will be a small, calm event, in a public space. Toilets, food and
drinks close by.
# It will last for approximately half an hour.
# Please explain to your child that we are 'acting' the imprisonment.
# Care will be taken to make sure it's a positive experience for all
involved: at the end, the detention centre will be theatrically closed
down and the detainees released into the care and support of the community,
just as we would like to see!).
# If this event is successful, we intend to use mock imprisonment of women
and children repeatedly in the Federal election campaign, to draw public
attention to the plight of families in the detention centres.

There are hundreds of children in Immigration Detention Centres around
Australia. They live in cramped and highly stressful conditions - they live
in prisons!

At Maribyrnong, children go to school in armoured vehicles, escorted by
armed security guards. They have no contact outside of school hours with
their school-mates. They see nothing of the wider Australian community, of
life outside the Detention Centres.

What sort of life is this for a child? What legacy will it leave them?

Show your abhorrence for this situation by coming along this Saturday! Call
the Darebin Greens on 9480 1740 or 9484 0802 to volunteer or for more info.

Media enquiries, please contact Chris Chaplin on 0400 886 876

LL:DDV: Latin Fiesta

2001-10-11 Thread Lucho Riquelme

Dear Friend and Comrades,

We are the Chilean Popular and Indigenous Network. We are a
non-profitable community group who works in solidarity with the
Indigenous community and grass-root Organisations in Latin America,
focuses on Chile during 2001.

We have been actively working since 1994; one of our important
objectives is distribute current information about the indigenous
communities, social and political events in Latin America that are
relevant for the Australian and Latin American communities. We carry
out this task by publishing an informative bulletin every two months.

Our activities are funded by its own members and any money raised is
sent to the Chilean Indigenous community to support the two projects
that we have been supporting since 2000. We also support political
prisoners and their families, Independent trade union movement in
Chile. We proudly support any struggle in Australia that supports human
and Indigenous rights.

In this moment we are supporting with all our effort and possibilities
the current campaign to stop the injustice war against poor nations,
such as Afghanistan, we must react to this action carried out by rich
countries which has the only objective to dominate the people and bring
us a new kind of world where exploitation and barbaric society will take
in place by Globalise Capitalism, the only thing we have and must do is
to oppose it, enough is enough.

Finally we would like to extend a warm invitation to our activity.
Fiesta Latina Solidarity Latin Dance, with 7 pieces live latin band
banana 6 will take place on: Saturday 20th October, 7 PM at Brunswick
Town Hall. 233 Sydney Rd, Brunswick,Solidarity night with a Hospital of

MEDIA RELEASE

Wednesday October 10, 2001

Local candidates call community march against war and racism

Two Newtown residents who will be contesting the November 10 federal
elections have called a community candle-lit march against war and
racism for Friday October 19.

Ms Sue Johnson (30), the Socialist Alliance candidate for Grayndler and Ms
Pip Hinman (42), the lead Socialist Alliance candidate for the NSW Senate
urged the local community to support the march.

Greens Councillor Sylvia Hale will be one of the speakers addressing
thenight march, which will wind its way down busy King Street after
gathering at the junction of King St and Enmore Rd at 5.30pm. Other
speakers will include members of the Afghan community, other refugee
communities, local unionists, pensioners and refugee activists.

Ms Johnson, a public service facilities planner, said that many people in
the local community were disgusted at the bi-partisan support for the war
against Afghanistan and the outrageous treatment of the few hundred refugees
Australia has to deal with.

Ms Hinman, a full-time human rights campaigner, said that PM John Howard
had shown a total disregard for the human rights of refugees while
promoting a war that will add to the 25 million refugees already fleeing
war, oppression and poverty.

Pip Hinman 0412 139 968

LL:DDV: Anti War Rally this Saturday OCT 13 2pm Arts Centre Foyer

2001-10-11 Thread Web Administrator

STOP NUCLEAR MISSILE DEFENCE

CLOSE PINE GAP

NO TO WAR

Victorian Arts Centre Foyer 100 St Kilda Rd Melbourne then marching to the
US Consulate 553 St Kilda Road

GLOBAL NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT

A NUCLEAR FREE AUSTRALIA

NO TO RACISM

NO NEW NUCLEAR ARMS RACE

October 13 is the international day of action against nuclear missile
defence. This mad plan by the US has committed 130 billion dollars to a
plan that cant prevent nuclear attack. It will not stop nuclear terrorism.

In light of this Nuclear Free Australia has initiated this rally.

Never has a nuclear free Australia been more important. There is little
doubt that Australian Uranium is being used in depleted uranium being
dumped on Afghanistan. The global positioning system, of which the US base
in Australia, Pine Gap is part of, is being used to pinpoint and guide the
bombing in Afghanistan. Lets not mince words this makes every Australian a
terrorist target.

The Australian government is one of the most enthusiastic supporters of
NMD. In order to overwhelm any US missile shield countries like China and
Russia will develop new and more powerful weapons that can evade detection.
This can only lead to a new nuclear arms race.

We must begin to mobilise against Australia's participation in the entire
nuclear industry and our all the way with George W approach when it comes
to US wars and US desire for absolute military superiority over the whole
globe.

Nuclear Free Australia.

Meetings Tuesdays 7pm Activist space RMIT student Union.
