Re: Lead Screw
Great tip, Bill.I assume just one of those three sections can be a direct replacement for the "Y-axis" screw? Will the split "nuts" screw smoothly over/across the "joints" between the sections?Thank you for sharing.Mac-Original Message- From: Bill HallowSent: Mar 11, 2015 8:12 PM To: "legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com" Subject: Lead Screw Hello All, Some time ago there was a thread looking for a source for lead screws. I didn’t follow it too closely, so I don’t know if a good source was ever found. Well, to the point. Today I purchased a new screw drive garage door opener. It came with, you guessed it, a nine foot lead screw. The lead screw is in three foot sections that interlock to form one screw, and is steel, one half inch diameter, and has eight threads per inch pitch. If this would work for use, I would guess that there are old screw drive garage door openers out there. Re: Z axis template follower
Very Nice Joe. Can you take a few more pictures of your 90 deg. tilting mech. of your Z axis? (that really looks SWEET! ) I honestly believe that turning on a face plate is one major piece that Legacy missed out on with there old machines. (OK I know that I will hear, complaints on this one, Legacy made the turntable to do stuff like that... But its not the same!) I think you will be surprised on how handy it could become... Keep up the good work. And Thanks for sharing . Hello Bill That could be something useful to one of our group? although the Legacy acme screw is 5/8x8 so a new nut and hook up to the carriage, will be needed if ...? But anything is possible. Harry Kilpatrick (harrykilpatric...@gmail.com) I have owned a Legacy model 1000, one of the real old ones and I have only used it once. I would like to find a reason to use it more and possibly convert it to CNC. Re: New member
Hello and good morning Harry Welcome to the group. If you want to find out more about your Legacy Ornamental Mill and how to use it. You have come to the right place. We have over 300 members, ( you are the 379th person in the group.) All of our members can offer at least some info on things that they have done and problems that they have run into with in a project. Our goal is to Help,Learn and Grow as woodworkers, using the Legacy Ornamental mill to its fullest potential. Now depending on the age of your mill, turning it into a CNC unit would be somewhat difficult, But nothing is impossible. I suggest to have you go through our archives and start looking at what has been covered in the past. I personal y feel our archives is a treasure trove of information. So feel free to search through the archives when ever you want. If you have any questions or info to add, Please feel free to do so when ever you can. Everyone has there own experiences and knowledge that can be shared,No matter what you skill level, You just might have the one insite that can help someone else out of a problem, so I suggest to have you post any info. that you can. in that way we all learn. Again Welcome to the group. Re: Here is an Oldie - but probably a Goodie!
Nice Find Mac Although the price is a bit high in my way of thinking, There is a lot or parts there...So I might be all worth it? Having said that, the wood chuck has some down falls, con paired to the Legacy's later models. (just to note a few, the steel rails flex a lot, and the carriage dose not have any hold down, so It must be held down on the rails while cutting.) But there are also some pluses with this WoodChuck too, larger turning dia. It has a motor drive,The carriage can be easly removed. Also one Big note On this machine, the WoodChuck has a bronze bushings in the head stock, something to be aware of, if thinking of high speed turning, like sandingthe bushings will ware... Thanks Mac FOR Keeping a eye out for all of us. I personally will let this one pass, but just perhaps someone out there could us this one? Have a good night.
