RE: tail stock on the LOM

2017-11-05 Thread Bill Bulkeley
Ok I made it on my metal lathe for my model 900 mill.

Using 2 bearings so it would be more stable when slipped over the existing
mills dead centre

And yes the ID does mach the shaft of the mills dead centre.

Lathe Live Center

Lathe Live Center provides for smooth, friction-free turning without messy
lubricants

Premier-quality Lathe Live Center features precision ball bearing construction
for friction-free tip rotation without the need for beeswax or similar
lubricants. As a result, your workpiece will turn more smoothly and quietly
without the fear of unsightly burning, which, under certain circumstances, can
allow your non-bearing Cup Center to loosen its grip on your stock and effect
the accuracy of your cuts. Its #2 Morse taper shaft slips easily into your MARK
V’s Lathe Tailstock.

IMPORTANT: This Live Center is required when using Shopsmith’s Lathe Duplicator

Yes I use a live center most of the time. I remember someone (I think it was
Tim) who made a live center for the Legacy's new tail stock. (More then a few
years ago.) If I remember correctly they threaded the shaft and then added a
live center on to the shaft. (I may have been a Shop-Smith I know that has a
1/2 -24 thread on the live center.) It should be in our archives..?

RE: Need LOM dogs and split nut

2017-11-05 Thread Russ Veinot
OK, to me, simple is drilling for a 1” dowel and cut it off after. No money
spend. Should have enough scrap to do this without leaving the shop. With the
face plate, you would only need one. Flat piece of plywood with 4 cleats to
hold the leg like a “wrench on a bolt”. They slip in and out instantly and
held in with tailstock. Or one piece of flat plywood with a lag bolt screwed
through it and mount on faceplate. Lots of NTI (nothing to it :>) ways.

Re: Tail stock on the LOM

2017-11-05 Thread 'joe biunno' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
Ok, been following the group but not commenting...a lot going on at work and
personally...one thing to note here is that I have to move my shop to a new
location... so we will see how well my beast breaks down and transports...The
base, the two, joined machines(1800 & 1200), the sopport cabinet and accessory
cart, etc I will take photos and post the procedure...back to the tailstock
issue...I am replying using my phone, not my of, so I cannot provide a
link...but if you search "tailstock mod", I am sure you will find it...in a
brief recap, I was able to find a tailstock from a small lathe on eBay, for
little money...had a #2 Morse taper, adjustment with a hand wheel and you lock
it down... it's casting was square, which made adapting it very quick and
easy... certainly no where near as nice as john preston's, but something that I
feel any member of the group could do as a Saturday morning project... just
need to find the right tailstock on eBay...but it certainly is much better than
the original cam action that came from legacy and worth the time and money...

RE: tail stock on the LOM

If your tailstock has a MT-2 then you can use a standard live center? I wish I
had that. I have just a solid rod grind to a point, lots of friction under
use. That’s the part I don’t like.

Hello guys.
the face-plate idea is OK. but for the money the indexing hubs are the best
tool in the arsenal of tools that Legacy ever made. Hopefully Cindy can come
through for you? If not there are others out there that can make them... the
Hubs are Simple, Efficient,& Practical... (ESP. or in other woods its KISS.
(Keep,It Simple, Stupid.) for the price those hubs are a GREAT DEAL!

Re: Need LOM dogs and split nut

2017-11-05 Thread CURTIS GEORGE
Hello Joe
most of the Legacy's that I have seen have a MT-2 as well as a 1x8 thread on
the head-stock/spindle. This means most of the lathe adapters you own should
fit the Legacy, the MT-1 is to small for the Legacy, but you can buy MT 1-2
adapters at any machine shop supply house, they are not expensive.

RE: Need LOM dogs and split nut

2017-11-05 Thread Russ Veinot
You are on the money Bill. The LOM uses the 1”-8TPI headstock with the #2
morse taper almost always, **apparently even yours Jon **. The #1 and #2
tapers are not interchangeable. There might be a #2 to #1 adaptor but don’t
bother. The #2 is most common among most wood lathes and LOM’s.

You have a 3 choices that comes to mind.

1) You can buy a larger chuck at about $200 or more

2) you can purchase the Penn State industries’ economy chuck (

https://www.pennstateind.com/store/CUG3418CCX.html ) for $90 . It comes with a
larger flat jaw set you could adapt for your use.

3) If you already have a smaller jaw chuck (Check? :>), you can drill a 1” hole
in the end of your stock and glue a 1” dowel ( or less, size doesn’t matter) in
it. This can then be used to hold the headstock end of the leg in your chuck.
After finishing, cut the dowel off flush.

The Penn state chuck comes with a lag screw so you could even drill a proper
size hole in the leg and screw the leg on to lag screw (I guess this is kinda
#4 choice :>).

I really like my Penn State Chuck and rarely use the LOM dogs these days.

There are a couple of other solutions that would be more complicated that I
could suggest if you want, but these 3 (4) are your easiest possibilities as I
see it.

Hope this helps

Russ

P.S. if you buy a new chuck, don’t buy extra :>)

I think it really depends on the size of your machine larger machines need
larger morse tapers to handle heaver operations your machine will do.the larger
the morse taper the more surface area it has to drive whatever you put in it

But in a medium size lathe or the legacy mill i like a number 2 morse which is
as large as you can go and still have your 1inch by 8 threads for your chucks
and stuff. You can always use sleeves to make a smaller morse tool fit but not
the other way round

Just my opinion based on years of working in the metal working industry

OK guys - its been kinda "slow" on the LOM discussions lately - so here goes:

I'll toss this one out for discussion:

How does one determine if the headstock on their lathe (LOM or other brand) is
a #1, #2, or a #3 Morse Taper? (Short of having a "known taper" piece of stock
and seeing if it "fits" into your headstock.)

If given a choice of which taper to have on your device (lathe?) - which will
you recommend - and WHY?

Thanks.
Mac
