I am a new owner of a 900 model and am slowly getting it together and I find
the rotary

I am a retired machinist so maybe I could build myself one with some helpful

Ken, there is NOTHING on the Legacy that a machinist can not re-produce.
I'm not a machinist (But did go to a trade school for the topic, back in the
80's, before I got into the pipefitting .) , ALL My Legacy equipment has been
modified in the attempt to make it better. I personally look forward to talking
shop with you, in the near future.
Again Welcome to the group.
Please ask as much as you wish, and share any ideas that you may have.

  Hello Ken
This is the rotary table that I own. It was made by a friend of mine, who
basically gave it to me as a gift.
This table was made from a ford F-150 wheel bearing. It has a vacuum port on
the bottom. a table locks in place and has its own build in indexing plate. It
turns so very easy, its amazing to feel the smoothness of this precision piece
of equipment. My Legacy's turn table (although very nice.) pails in comparison.

Re: old 900

2023-01-08 Thread Ken and Diana
I would be interested in any and all info on the rotary for the LOM.
I am a new owner of a 900 model and am slowly getting it together and I
find the rotary
table concept very interesting.
I am a retired machinist so maybe I could build myself one with some
helpful information from
this group.
Thanks, Ken

 Good morning everyone.

Tom, I like that turn table/disk. But I find the table is the lest
used Legacy tool that I own. Not to say anything bad about it, I just do
not need to use it a lot.
In the early days of Legacy, they just used a 2x4 or a piece of
plywood, and mounted it between the rails of the Legacy, Then they used the
stylist form the templet follower as the center point, There table was just
simple a router circle jig type of table.
That's How Dane made his Grape arbor in one of his video/ Garden
 arbor,( Legacy project 2 video.)

 I have to go,
talk to you all more latter.
 Have a great day.

watching a video I learned legacy made 12000 manual machines

RE: 3d printing

2023-01-08 Thread bulkeley
According to my son they do make a 3d printing cord from Delrin so 3d printing
split nuts is most likely possible

those and top hats will surly be popular to print. I still think gears are not
totally out of the question now I have disassembled

Some of the electric geared drive motors we use on our legacys and guess what
some of the gears are made of in the gearbox?

Not always metal yes some are plastic lol there are some very strong plastics
out there these days I’m just saying.

Eric would you be interested in trying to run some split nuts for the LOM's?

What type of material do you use? Is it long wearing? What else can you create
or have created?

The company behind the article does custom work, so someone needing a part
could send the data files to them and have them create the parts, plus a
few extra to sell and help recoup some of the expense.

2023-01-08 Thread bulkeley
That article on metal 3d printing was extremely interesting that is defiantly
the future printing in Aluminum,316L stainless steel and titanium

amazing one day many years from now engineering machineing will be a thing of
the past. Imagine 3d printed replacement body parts

like hips knee joints ect ,3d printed cars planes even space craft its endless
every thing we make from metal could be 3d printed

if only the human race would stop squabbling and fighting amongst ourselves and
turn our attention to these types of technologies there is nothing humans
could not accomplish but instead we spend all our time and resources inventing
things to kill each other.

2023-01-08 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
 Hello Tom
Yes Shop Smith uses a 5/8" smooth bore shaft,Here are some links.

https://www.pennstateind.com/store/L5818.html

You can see some photos on this link for our
archives.https://groups.google.com/g/legacy-ornamental-mills/c/f1pvnNr4Seo/m/3hfpQ6_1AAAJ
 .
So Yes I would cut your drive spur off and the wield a 5/8" shaft collar onto
it. Turn down the 3/4" shaft so the adaptors would fit the shaft.  This way you
will not have to change the bushings or have to worry about the gears mating up
what I new shaft.  Just a turn of a set screw and change out the drive hub and
or add a new tool to your Legacy. If you look on E-bay (crag's list, market
place...) 5/8" smooth bore adaptors have been used a lot in the past. Shop
Smith is just the last of its breed. You may be able to find old parts form
Craftsman, and Montgomery Wards (home craft) tools sold as antiques.  Sometimes
you can find a hole machine for less then you can buy the parts alone. I just
saw an old ER (shop smith) on market place for under $100.00 with all the parts
you will ever need to use. (chucks, spur, faceplate, Jackup's chuck...) Like
this one.

and the old flee markets are always a good place to look as well. ;-)
Wish you luck.talk to you more latter.

SSmith parts. So I'd have to look into that and see if someare for sale up

I think I'd like to have the option of the MT2. ?
If you're not using your MT2 how do you hold on your drive hub?Can you just

 Hello Everyone.
Tom. what size or dia. is your Legacy headstock shaft (the part your drive hub

The easiest way to modify your headstock would be to turn the front part of
your shaft to 5/8" dia. This would let you use all of the Shop Smith lathe
parts. from a 1x8 TPI, lathe chucks and faceplates.modifying your drive  hub is
a very easy process too. (that is to make your drive hub into a SS adapter, as
well.)Then you would have it all. (except the MT2 part.) If you cant live
without a MT2, then you will have to either make one (like I did.) or modify
another Legacy's headstock to fit your machine. {NOTE: as a side note, I found
that the MT2 parts are almost to big to fit the Legacy's headstock for adding
ball bearings, But a MT1 taper is small enough to keep the Legacy housing of
the headstock, while leaving room for ball bearings or bushings.}
I think for the bang for the buck would be to go with the first idea.  Any
machinist could easily re-work the spindle/drive shaft on your legacy, plus
Modify the drive hub adaptor for little money. (Its an easy job for a steel
lathe.)  As for myself. I almost never use the MT2 part of the headstock on my
Legacy, the 1x8 thread and the drive hub are normally what I use.Legacy even
made the REVO with a 5/8" shaft. So why not your Legacy too?
Have a good night.

You made some great points about the drive hub and prong pieces being very

Very kind of you  to let me know about the possible table Tim-thank you.If I

the underside of the legacy rotary table. Is there a big bearing under there

All the work is in the file, I would keep at, especially for testing.

Re: old 900

2023-01-08 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
Curt, thanks for those pics of the rotary table over on the other thread.
my head spindle is 3/4" diameter.
So you mean I could get the 12 hole index head cut off, then the 3/4"
spindle shaft turned down
to 5/8" dia and the SSmith accessories would all slide on ?
Then I'd have to weld an adapter shaft to the 12 hole drive hub so I can
use it on the 5/8" spindle..
I'm not familiar with SSmith parts. So I'd have to look into that and see
if some
are for sale up here. Thanks for pointing out all these options.

I think I'd like to have the option of the MT2. ?

If you're not using your MT2 how do you hold on your drive hub?
Can you just grab it with the chuck?

Wow yeah you can say that again Joe. Or even a water jet for gears. So many

But as long as Legacy makes gears I will stick with them.

make them any longer

2023-01-08 Thread Tim Ziegler
Your exactly right Eric,

I can run anything on the laser as long as I have the file. Or I create it
myself, nothing like CNC using G codes and
whatever involved there.

Re: 3d printing

2023-01-08 Thread Eric Gantner
I just recently setup my 3D printer, and I am learning ton. Once you have
your files made you can make it out of what ever need for the function you
need. All the work is in the file, I would keep at, especially for
testing.

Eric G.

FYI
I purchased Charlie’s Legacy 900 should be here in a week or two.

Yeah I see the drive gears, just not any of the Standard gear set, or
optional ones. X 2 or .25 sets.
I have another guy that could use the drive gears too.
thanks Mike

2023-01-08 Thread Mike Newman
Hey Tim on the unit you are looking at within 1.5 hrs of you. If it is the
same one that I recently saw up in your area go back and take a look at the
photo showing the whole length of the machine. I think the drive gears are
hanging on a nail on the lower left front part of the stand. There was no
single photo of them but the front photo may show them. Im still new
enough to not know what I am seeing but my guess is those are the drive
gears.

Re: Legacy's rotary table.

2023-01-08 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
 Good morning guys.
Yes I did understand that, but I no longer own this table, and these were the
only photo's that I had.
When I replaced the top, I did not take photos at that time. But you are
correct there are 4 slicks that balance the edges of the table.  Its a pretty
simple design, over all.  The gears make it nice, but they too are no
nessasary. In the early days of this group, We had a man, make a table out of
plywood.I don't remember the exact size of the table, but it was large enough
so the edges of the table went past the rails of the Legacy, He used this
projection as a hand grip to turn the table. so his hands were no-where close
to the cutting of the router and  wood.Simple but effective way to get the job
done.  (KISS Principle.)(  Keep, It , Simple, Stupid.)
Have a good day.
