it's in upstate NY, 120 miles away so I don't even have a chance to "play" with
it(and I do have some interesting ideas)... went to the society of Ornamental
Turners open house a week or so ago in Port Chester NY... quite a unique
experience... a lot of Holtzapffel's and Rose Engine lathes... all on display,
all there for members to play with... very far advanced than our Legacy's...
but with strict size restrictions... wish I had the time to play with the
Legacy and make some large scale items with high details... similar to what a
Holtzapffel can do but on a much larger scale... some of the guys there are
wound up pretty tight and almost all that I spoke to readily admitted that it
is not a money making endeavor... it is a hobby first and foremost some
incredibly beautiful things can be made with the equipment they have but at the
expense of perhaps hundreds of hours to do it... I personally feel the
challenge we all face is not to have the most sophisticated or accessorized
machine(a computerized machine can put us all to shame!), it is knowing what to
design so that we can then use our equipment to make it and then wowing anyone
who takes the time to see it... anyway I thought I would post a piece we just
finished for a decorator and client... carvings are hand done and were carved
off the cabinet so they are very 3-dimensional... drawer handles are
intertwined with the carvings... carvings are 23K water gilt and burnished real
gold leaf(no oil size here) with a striaided lacquer background... and this is
in a small entry foyer right off the passenger elevator... to give you an idea
of what an expensive piece like this was given such an insignificant
location... been following all of the posts and have to say the idea of 3D
printing the gears in plastic is not a long term viable option in my opinion...
metal is the only way to go... and if it turns out to be a bit pricey, well
then that's the way it is... whether Legacy does it or some other outside
source... get your order into Legacy now, bite the bullet and pay the price and
simply be patient... regards to all... Joe BiunnoOn Thursday, February 23, 2023

okay guys, time to separate the men from the boys!... I was recently contacted
by someone who just obtained a Legacy 1500 and does not know anything about the
machine or how it works... and they are in the market to sell this Legacy...
here is a list of the "goodies"

1) CNC legacy upgrade package, not installed... most likely never installed...
with the         software CDs!

2) 4X gear package upgrade... yes, 4X!... verified myself and with the
installation sheet

3) "Z" axis upgrade

4) rotary table with the flex piece to connect it to the head stock

5) Legacy aluminum rail base with casters

6) original lead screw drive motor with the controls and limit switches

7) nice Porter Cable router on it

8) practically every Legacy option you could ever imagine

9) I am sure there are router bits, just haven't gotten that far into the
inventory

I am guiding this person through the process, so no low ballers!... LOL!...
general location is the southwest United States... certainly photos will be
available, most likely tomorrow's postings... could use some assistance in
helping with a fair price for this person... for the record, I have no interest
myself(that remark is mostly directed to Mac!)... anyone can email me at
... or call my cell anytime 516-606-6627... once a fair price
has been offered I will give the contact info of the seller and I am then
backing away... just trying to help someone who reached out to me... ok guys,
let's see where this goes... regards... Joe Biunno

Re: leadscrew tap

2020-10-02 Thread finunlim via Legacy Ornamental Mills
Some info on this subject... I made my own tap from a left over piece of acme
threaded rod I had from one of my Legacy mods... very simple to do...
approximately 4-5 inches long, I tapered the end much like a starting tap would
be tapered, cut a single flute to do the cutting of the thread and it worked
very well in some black Teflon-like material I got from McMaster-Carr... the
material was very inexpensive... I don’t understand why to make the nut out of
wood... in my opinion, the wood will not last as long as the Teflon would...
and brass is not a viable substitute, IMHO... need to be very careful not to
wear out the lead screw, as that is not so easy to replace... better to wear
out the nut than the lead screw... the black plastic material is very well
suited for the job and is not expensive... just my two cents on the subject...
and this was posted by me a while ago... perhaps two to three years ago... Joe
B.

Richard, I was just contacted by someone on my Legacy facebook page, regarding

mentioned that a club member was looking for that exact machine... no price was
mentioned... not sure how to hook you two up, assuming that you are
interested... let me know... Joe B.

Joe,

Do you have two wing nuts that connect the router base to your solid acme nut
on the y axis? That also appears to be another method to allow the axis to
float with the solid nut version.

wow tim!...incredible photos and many thanks...here is some additional info
that is now better explained, thanks to you...I do not have the "L" shaped,
nylon blocks on the underside of the Y carriage, as I now see in your
photos...they were replaced by a previous owner with an oak wood and ball
bearing set up that is a bit sub-standard for me (i.e. rube Goldberg)...I also
see that the Y axis acme screw has it's own split nut...my Y axis does not have
a split nut, just a solid, nylon block, with the 5/8-4 acme thread in it and
attached to the router mounting plate...so there is currently no way to
disengage the Y movement from the threaded rod...I can mod that out without
much work with some of the extra parts I have, so no issue there, but I am glad
to have seen it in your photos...I have already begun setting up the X axis on
a linear bearing...and actually it seems it will be quite an easy job and at a
nominal expense($120.00 +/- total)...it will not allow the carriage to be
lifted off the rails and the tolerances(vertical and front-to-back) will be
very tight and yet allow the carriage to slide easily...and the tolerances will
be easily adjustable, if ever needed...I am also converting the headstock to
ball bearings...it currently has some 1/4", black nylon "pads" as a bearing,
but I could see those not lasting very long, especially under
heavier-than-normal loads...that too was not expensive, but will require
jamming a lot into that small headstock "box"...but I have laid it out and it
is doable...and I will be posting photos, of course...not going to go the full
monty with this machine, as I did before, LOL...but just some needed
repairs/upgrades that were necessary, and I thought while I was doing that, why
not spend a little more time and make it a better machine...my intention is to
use this machine for smaller work and leave the big guy set up to do the longer
poles and larger work we do...and if I should ever get a manual, you will be
the first person I send a copy to...again, many thanks...joe
