Some info on this subject... I made my own tap from a left over piece of acme
threaded rod I had from one of my Legacy mods... very simple to do...
approximately 4-5 inches long, I tapered the end much like a starting tap would
be tapered, cut a single flute to do the cutting of the thread and it worked
very well in some black Teflon-like material I got from McMaster-Carr... the
material was very inexpensive... I don’t understand why to make the nut out of
wood... in my opinion, the wood will not last as long as the Teflon would...
and brass is not a viable substitute, IMHO... need to be very careful not to
wear out the lead screw, as that is not so easy to replace... better to wear
out the nut than the lead screw... the black plastic material is very well
suited for the job and is not expensive... just my two cents on the subject...
and this was posted by me a while ago... perhaps two to three years ago... Joe
