old 900

2023-01-04 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
I have an old model 900 that I'd like to do some upgrades on. It has alum
rails but no stand.
I'd like to upgrade the headstock to a MT2 and 1x8 tpi threads as well as
replace the
tailstock with something that can accept a MT2.

I can't seem to find a scale for the Y axis. Anyone with a 900 have a
scale and where abouts is it? I have the long ruler scale for the X.

I'm on the west coast of Canada and legacy's are very scarce out here.

Also can anyone tell me what rpm range the original legacy dc motor for the
leadscrew was? I'm thinking of installing a motor. Maybe a vehicle wiper
motor and gearing.

Thank you
Tom

Thank you Jeff.
I'm not sure what model I have.
I'll have to do some digging.

I just realized I could fab up a rotary table from the 10" 2x duplex gear
and a smaller gear.
maybe get some bevel gears from a radial arm saw height winder to transfer
the handle motion to the table.

Re: old 900

2023-01-05 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
I think you're right Bill, it seems to be the closest even though it says
the 800 should have a MT2 head.
almost 12" between frame rails and 8&1/2" between bed rails. Y axis rails
are 15&1/2" long.
has tapering capacity. the tail is about 3/8" threaded rod. The index hub
is welded to the 3/4" head shaft.
Thanks for the head link Curt...might go that route.

Re: old 900

2023-01-06 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
Timothy, I didn't realize Curt was talking about shopsmith parts.
The head shaft is 3/4" dia and the tail is about 3/8" dia.
I'm pretty sure my 24 hole indexing head is welded right to the 3/4" shaft.
I tried hammering it off but no go and the hole from the back where the
black plastic knob screws in doesn't go right through so I'm pretty sure
there is no taper in there. I'll scan the articles for shopsmith stuff.

Re: old 900

2023-01-07 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
from my experience shipping things from the USA to here is a real pain.
lots of ebay sellers won't even ship to Canada.
many costs are involved and the seller's "shipping" cost is only to the
broker it seems
because the UPS person always has their hand out for more money when they
arrive at the door. There's extra hidden charges for customs brokerage fees
and taxes etc.
It's a gong show.

I'm coming up with ideas on redoing the whole machine.

Curt, thanks for the tail pic. That looks like what I want to do.
might buy a cheap old wood lathe and steal the tail and head spindle from
it.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions.

Re: old 900

2023-01-07 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
Curt, I have that vid about the grape arbour so I know what you mean.
I'm not sure just what I'd make with the table but I think the more options
the better.

You made some great points about the drive hub and prong pieces being very
useful.
If I can get a 1x8 with morse2 spindle then I could modify my hub into a
morse 2 so it could
slide into the spindle. I'd like to have the chuck option as well.

Very kind of you to let me know about the possible table Tim-thank you.
If I could get one then there'd be no need to build one I suppose.
I've never seen the underside of the legacy rotary table.
Is there a big bearing under there between the mounting plate and the gear-
like a lazy susan bearing ?

Re: old 900

2023-01-08 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
Curt, thanks for those pics of the rotary table over on the other thread.
my head spindle is 3/4" diameter.
So you mean I could get the 12 hole index head cut off, then the 3/4"
spindle shaft turned down
to 5/8" dia and the SSmith accessories would all slide on ?
Then I'd have to weld an adapter shaft to the 12 hole drive hub so I can
use it on the 5/8" spindle..
I'm not familiar with SSmith parts. So I'd have to look into that and see
if some
are for sale up here. Thanks for pointing out all these options.

I think I'd like to have the option of the MT2. ?

If you're not using your MT2 how do you hold on your drive hub?
Can you just grab it with the chuck?

2023-01-11 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
Thanks Tim & Bill.I don't think I have the snipping tool. I see no
scissors when I left or right click on a pic.
I find it difficult following others directions with anything computer
related so don't waste anymore time with me on this.
I seem to have puzzled out a method that works so I'll stick with that for
now.

been enjoying reading many past posts.

Re: z-axis upgrade questions

2023-01-22 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
Thanks to Bill & Curt for those answers. I'm thinking of changing the z
axis on my machine also. there was a triton at the local pawn shop for
sale so I'll have to do more investigation about them and how the z
adjustment works. wow Curt that is a lot of experimentation on your z !
the current version looks really solid.
Bill what are the big advantages of the triton over the PC 7539 I have ?
I've been looking for z axis linear guides on Amazon etc but I don't see
one big enough and strong enough for a heavy router...most are for small z
movement. thanks for asking Mike.

Re: z-axis upgrade questions

2023-01-22 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
thanks for all the info guys.
curt- that z axis might be what I need.
bill- fine adjustment...my ears went up about that..my PC 7539
doesn't have that unless you want to monkey with feeler gauges.
good advise about the light cuts-I'll have to keep that in mind.
I watched a vid from Triton about their bigger router so next time I'm at
the pawn shop I know what to check out.
Tim- do you mean Pc doesn't make the 7539 or 7518 any more?
I think I have a lighter PC in a plastic case somewhere that I can dig out
if needed.

Re: new tilting Z axis

2023-01-23 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
That's a great creative solution Bill.
I'm probably going to steal some ideas.
I see you also have the option of the horizontal router from
the side with the drop down router support plate and dropdown tailstock
complete with tapering option. very versatile.

2023-02-08 Thread Tom B.C. Canada
At the tail end of the bed is a red crossmember with a long oval cut out on
the beveled part.
what is that for ? and does that red crossmember connect to the frame or
the bed?
what's the bevel for?
Looks like a great machine Eric, especially with the adjustable z axis so
you can see what
the bit is doing.
Does the z axis have delrin that travels up and down in the alum
rails..kinda like the Y ?
Thanks for posting all the pics.
