start turning much slower. Shut it off. Blew it out with air compressor. Tried
to start. Still buzzing and at first started to turn backwards for a second
before turning slower in the right direction.
Any ideas what is the problem? Brushes are good. Armature dirty? Speed control
shot? Not holding my mouth right? (Something my Dad accused me of many times)

If worse case, any suggestions for a replacement router?

Re: Things you can make with a turn table.

2019-01-16 Thread patrick
Another option would be to wrap a bicycle-type chain around the outside
edge, probably inset into a groove and the ends fastened to the turntable.
The chain becomes the driven gear "teeth" on the table. There are many
sizes/options for drive sprockets/gears available.

well, spent some time on the computer... it's a bit crazy and complex out there
in regards to splined shafts and linear bearings... with all the 3D printers
and other equipment using linear motion, it's a problem(at least it is for
me!...LOL!) to sort through it all... but I did find something that is simple,
and most likely inexpensive... it is not a linear bearing, in that, it is not a
ball bearing... but for the speed that is being considered here, this setup
might do... with the added bonus of being the least expensive option
available(I am assuming!)… a splined shaft, with a bronze bearing that has a
mounting flange... the bronze bearing matches the splines on the shaft to
transfer the rotational load/power... I could see a "wave" pattern
wheel(perhaps made from aluminum, cut on a laser or water jet), approximately
1/4' thick, that easily bolts to the flange on the bronze bearing... perhaps
even a series of wheels bolted together, much like you see on a rose engine
lathe... but one at a time can work, as well, as a start... a chain sprocket
bolted to each end of the splined shaft(each end, so the rotational load is
evenly applied to the splined shaft, thus eliminating any rotational twisting
or flexing, in the shaft or the Legacy lead screw)… matching chain sprockets on
each end of the Legacy lead screw... necessary bracketry to hold this new,
splined shaft above and away from the legacy lead screw, and allowing the
proper clearance needed for the pattern wheels... necessary chain to link the
sprockets together, with tensioners so there is hopefully little to no
backlash... so, we now have rotational power, transferred to a "carriage" of
wheels that would be locked into the Legacy router carriage, and thus moving
left and right as the Legacy carriage moves left and right... NOW THAT WASN'T
SO DIFFICULT, NOW WAS IT!... LOL!... I see the McMaster-Carr company declaring
a profit should this mod ever be completed!(bearings, shaft collars to hold the
bearings, brackets, etc., etc.)… well, that's it for now... hopefully anyone
who has an interest in the project will chime in and offer any comments or
suggestions, before I spend what little is left of my kids inheritance!, on yet
another Legacy mod... hope I have some red spray paint left over!

RE: ornamental turning on a rose engine lathe video

2018-12-07 Thread Patrick
Hey Joe,

Yes, I was assuming a stationary carriage, for faceplate work. I suppose you
could run a splined jack-shaft the length of the bed, supported at both ends,
with the driven sprocket floating on it and moving with the carriage. Friction
and tolerances would probably be significant issues.

I’m curious, what are you planning to mill that would need both vertical and
horizontal wave patterns?

hey Pat!... can I assume that in your variation, the router carriage is
stationary without the ability to slide along the bed?... I would need the
carriage to move along the X axis so various "pump" action cuts could be done
along a spiral of some sort... so the pumping action needs to be in motion
while the carriage is in motion... I am racking my brain on this one... I have
done a lot of mods on my Legacy, and some that I have done the design work on
but just don't have the time right now to execute and build... but this mod has
me stumped to the point that I cannot get the design worked out, never mind
what it might take to complete the actual mod to a full working stage!... I
like the idea of coming off the end of the lead screw... the problem is how to
transfer that motion to a X-axis moving carriage, along the full length of the
bed... let the quest continue!... LOL!... thanks... Joe

Re: ornamental turning on a rose engine lathe video

2018-12-06 Thread patrick
Combining several ideas:
Use a variation of Tim's wave attachment
(https://groups.google.com/d/msg/legacy-ornamental-mills/gsFab9dTSr8/h15dZQFqwEMJ)
Run the lever up to a plate on a jack-shaft instead of the leadscrew.
Connect the jack-shaft to a chain-driven Z axis (no leadscrews on Z)
You'll need a sprocket on the jack-shaft on top and another below, with a
closed-loop chain, so it pulls up and down to minimize slop on Z.
Mount the router parallel to the longitudinal axis
(https://ornamentalmills.com/Bill_Bulkeley/revo_side_mount/index.html)

No, I haven't built this, just combining ideas from previous posts.

RE: Making signs with legacy

2018-07-31 Thread Patrick Salter
Not sure about doing raised letters. I was thinking of something similar to the
letter sets others were talking about. Those work fine if you are doing just
one or two signs. What I was thinking about was a project that we did while I
was working at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base. I was teaching a wood working
program at the brig.
We had a request for about 40 plaques with a picture of a unit that had
recently returned from Iraq with the units name routed across the bottom. We
used the letter set to lay out the unit name on a piece of 1/4” plywood and
then cut them out making sure the “guide “ bushing fit into all the letters. We
then built a jig to hold the plywood “stencil “ over the plaque blanks.
I was thinking of doing the same thing but using the legacy follower. I guess
I’ll just have to try it.

Making signs with legacy

2018-07-29 Thread Patrick Salter
Has anyone used their legacy for making signs? I’m sure it would be easier for
one sign to just use a router free hand but I was thinking of a project where
you needed to make several signs saying the same thing.
Just an idea. Maybe using the “contour follower”?

I have tried several times to post a picture on the group site and google keeps
kicking it back saying it is undeliverable. I followed the directions in the

even tried sending the picture less then a meg in size.

Walmart.com is trying to become like Amazon.com, they now sell a lot of
third-party drop-ship products. Many (most) of the online retailers are
going to that model.
I work for a brake manufacturer and our warehouses ship out a lot of

2018-04-04 Thread Patrick
Hello,

I purchased a Legacy 1000 about 10 years ago and haven't really used it
much, due to lack of space. I recently moved and now have a MAN-CAVE, so
there is plenty of room to set it up and use it properly.

Since I work in IT, I plan to add some CNC-type automation to the LOM,
starting with a variable speed drive on the lead-screw.

I came across this group while searching for ideas, and requested
membership.

When not making sawdust, I make aluminum shavings in the quest to complete
an airplane build.

In my other spare time, I fly airplanes and ride my Goldwing around central
SC.

Regards,

Patrick

I had seen this and it is definitely on my to-do list. My biggest problem is
doing the flame part.
I would do the base on the lathe but would I then turn the rough shape of the
flame? Leaving the piece in my chuck, mount in the legacy to do the three sides?

Making sawdust!

2018-03-01 Thread Patrick Salter
I finally got my legacy set! I started following the fast start start video
(how did we survive watching vhs tapes!) and everything was going fine until i
got to the spiral part.
In the video he said that after making the first of multiple cuts to disconnect
the split nut, slide back router sled the width of your bit, reattach the split
nut and it should be good for the next cut.
I was using a 3/4” core bit ( no rope or barley twist bits yet) and they just
didn’t seem to line up right. After much thought (my wife said she could see
the smoke) I wondered if I couldn’t just use the index gear. I tried it and it
and it worked much better! I will try posting a picture. If it works, the first
attempt is on the bottom and on the top is using the gear index. Hmm, give me
a second to figure out posting pictures

Bits to start with

2018-02-18 Thread Patrick Salter
As some of you may know, I just got a new legacy 1000 still in the box
(assembly begins later this week) and the burning question in my mind is what
bits should I be looking to get started. I have a bottom bit a couple of
classic plunge bits.
Would a barley twist bit or a rope bit be better to practice with? Size?
I’m assuming that I’ll start getting bits from magnate but open to suggestions.
I’m not sure what I will be making (so many options) but will try a lot of
things to start.

Hi all. I have recently acquired a Legacy 1000 brand new, still in the box.
Some folks I know bought it in2002 and because of health issues never even set

I’m looking for any and all information and help with this machine.

I’m a retired carpenter/ woodworker who enjoys spending time in the shop making
