Bill, Thanks for offering your services...very kind of you. I will probably give another shot at freeing it up since I don't like giving up on anything. Sometimes it's better for me to step away from things and come back later...especially when I have a hammer in my hands...ha ha! If I don't have any success, I just may send everything your way. Re: Index Spindle for 1000/1500EX
Hey Lou if you look at the underside of the spindle you should see two lock rings in the grooves holding the spindle in-between the plastic bushings. remove the rings and the spindle should come out of the head stock. where then you can hold it in a vice and do (as many have already suggested) use some kind of penetrating oil (like WD40). If the soaking dose not work, then you can add some heat if needed. But I find if you twist and tap the MT2 adaptor if should come out with out much trouble. I have to always remind my self. "MIGHT DOSE NOT MAKE RIGHT". & "Just because I can, doesn't mean I should". ;-) I would try twisting the bar out first, and then work on the MT2. I wish you luck on this one. Legacy made a number of different mounting for there spindle adaptors, so a picture just might be needed to find the spindle you need. Please let us know, I might be able to help you out? but lets try the basics before we throw out the part... have a good night. I had one stuck as well, got it out though. 1. Thread a bolt into the hole and it will contact the #2mt, if it doesn't and there is a shoulder in there, you may need to put a smooth rod in there, cut off to get maximum threads exposed for the bolt. 2. Tighten the bolt into the #2mt and it may push it out. Yes? Finish! No? next 3. Spray anti lock spray of some sort, what ever is your favorite, wd40, pb blaster, whatever. Let it sit an hour spray it again and do the bolt thing again. If still no go, Get a heavy piece of steel or a piece of hardwood and hold it under the shaft, use a brass hammer or what ever hammer you have. Hold good pressure under the shaft and hit the top of the shaft with the hammer. One smack and then re-tighten the bolt, another smack and tighten continue. Usually twice is all you need. On my second smack, it flew out. Let me know how this works for you. Mike OK On 1/30/2017 2:01 PM, MWF wrote: Lou, I have the EXACT same problem. If there are more of us, maybe Tim or someone else will agree to fabricate some replacement spindles. Afterall, if a machinist sets up to make 1, they can make several and bring down the per unit cost for all of us. I'm interested in knowing if there are others out there that had the "jammed/stuck" spindle problem and what they did to overcome it. Thanks guys (& gals - Brigitte) for your input. That's what this Group is all about. I bought this machine second hand many years ago and never had any reason to remove the headstock until I got curious enough to attempt another learning experience. Well, not surprisingly, the headstock is stuck in the index spindle. After researching the internet for viable solutions, all were tried with no success. After trying to insert a small steel rod followed by a threaded bolt to push the headstock out, I did manage to get the steel rod stuck…and it’s still stuck! This is not a problem since I can still use the headstock as it did not budge, I just can’t go on to bigger and better things. So, of course, my next step was to contact Legacy and get a new index spindle. After about a dozen calls and left messages, I finally made contact with Cindy Anderson. I explained my situation and she said no problem, the current spindles for their CNC machines will fit my machine. Fantastic! Well, the problem is…it DOES NOT fit my machine. So, back to square one. Again, after many attempts with no response back I just gave up on Legacy. It’s that type of customer service, or lack thereof, that loses potential CNC customers like me…for good. I don’t have pics or measurements of the spindle, but it has two Delrin washers that are held in place with spring clips. My other thought was to find a machinist, who works independently or on the side, to just make the spindle as it is a simple part and shouldn’t be too expensive. I’ve asked around a bit here and there but can’t seem to find anyone in my area. And I think going to a larger machine shop, even for a simple part, would be a bit pricey. So, does anyone here have an extra spindle they are willing to part with? Or, does anyone have another possible solution? I am open to all information, suggestions, and advice. Re: Index Spindle for 1000/1500EX
Lou,I have the EXACT same problem. I too, "researched the internet for a solution" and I too, have a steel rod stuck/jammed in the threaded opening. I have tried freezing it, soaking with WD40 (and a variety of other "lubrication" and "un-stick" products), and finally, the bolt & rod. No luck yet.So I, too, need a replacement spindle.
