Re: Legacy shadow pictures.

2012-05-21 Thread Alan Griffiths
Hi Tim
The stop for the z axis has not moved and it is very stout being a rod
controlled by an Allen screw passing through a fixed block.( I hope we are
talking about the same thing. )

The shadow came with two directional gears. There is also a 2x duplex gear and
for some reason an extra identical 2x index gear.

I am not concerned with the template capabilities at the moment as I have
access to a 900. I do however take your point to future development of template
fixtures.

My main thoughts at the moment is securing a bed of some sort to the rails or
even the cross supports at the very bottom of the machine which would increase
the distance from the underside of the router chuck to the bed by up to
12inches. This seems to me to open up a whole lot of possibilities. Secured to
the rails for instance would make an excellent tennoning capability.

Re: Legacy shadow pictures.

2012-05-19 Thread Tim Krause
Hello Alan,

With the lack of friction in the nut and the linear bearings, I can see how
the router could easily move down. I see that the stop for the z-axis looks
like it moved. I would suggest adding a split pin or dowel to the block so
it cannot move out of place. That depth stop should really be very stout
and reliable in this case.

Curt has me wondering if the shadow even came with another directional gear
so you can have left or right spirals. I see the extra holes in the gear
mounted on the machine so it looks like it was developed but I don't see the
extra gears or assembly in the photos.

Are you going to miss the template capabilities? Now that all the carriages
are rigid, the template following techniques would probably work like a
dream. With the "L" shaped bracket mounted in the front, it looks like
there's a possible starting point.

-Tim

Legacy shadow pictures.

2012-05-19 Thread Alan
at last I have posted some pictures of the shadow.as you can see it is
an adapted cnc machine.it is extremely sturdy and as a consequence
very heavy. I have done very little on it since it was delivered by
our Roger due to I'll health but I am becoming fit and well again so I
will do more soon. There is one small 'fault' on the machine and that
is the z axis. The sheer weight of the motor( porter cable) causes the
motor to lower rather rapidly on it's own especially under power.
I am a 68year old semi retired wood machinist-joiner.I have a small
Joinery business in south Birmingham, England.
In my workshop I have a Makita table saw,an over and under planer, a
spindle moulder with power feed.a lathe and of course my legacy
shadow. Oh I forgot my bandsaw and lap sharp.
At the last count I had nine routers and the usual collection of
sanders and drills etc.

Best regards
Alan

Since you have seen this machine first hand, Can you tell me if there is any
way to make the unit a little longer?
I think that the pricing isn't all that bad,Its a few more dollars than the
older units, and I think I can live with that part.(you get more, you pay
more.) But I want to be able to keep my 72" tuning ability not 58" that the
shadow offers, what are the chances of making the Shadow a little bit
longer?

RE: Legacy Shadow

2012-02-19 Thread Roger H Phebey
Hi Guys
The Shadow that Alan has is the first off the line and I think I am correct
in saying that Andy has not built any more yet due to the fact it is Show
Time and that means he is out of town at least twice a month, the same for
Tracy, and in a small company that time out impacts on design, production
etc. The problems over Extrusion have also impacted on finalising the
design and is another factor in it taking its time to appear.

The line will comprise two models, a 36" and 58" between centres and it is
based on the Arty chassis although the Z Axis & gantry are different.

I cannot locate my price file at present otherwise I could tell you but ask
John Hennen he should know.
Regards
Roger

I know when we all got the message that a new manual machine was in the
works i spoke to John about it. At that time he had no pricing for it. It
was also supposed to be capable of being upgraded to CNC. He also had no
price information on that, the only thing price wise that he knew was if you
were sure you wanted CNC you would be better off getting a Arty he said it
would cost less,(I am sure you would be paying for all the gears etc) I am
not sure if that is still the case.

I am curious to how many Shadow's Legacy has sold, or plans to sell, I had
taken the idea that the Shadow and the Criterion were both machines that
when you called Legacy they would try to push you towards another machine.

Thanks Roger,
I just checked out Legacy's web sites and they don't have the Shadow
listed. I remember the announcement but that was it. Where can we find out
the price, final configuration, etc?

Anyone have any links to updated information?

Re: Legacy Shadow

2012-02-19 Thread Jeff Becker
I know when we all got the message that a new manual machine was in the works i
spoke to John about it. At that time he had no pricing for it. It was also
supposed to be capable of being upgraded to CNC. He also had no price
information on that, the only thing price wise that he knew was if you were
sure you wanted CNC you would be better off getting a Arty he said it would
cost less,(I am sure you would be paying for all the gears etc) I am not sure
if that is still the case.

I am curious to how many Shadow's Legacy has sold, or plans to sell, I had
taken the idea that the Shadow and the Criterion were both machines that when
you called Legacy they would try to push you towards another machine.

Thanks Roger,
I just checked out Legacy's web sites and they don't have the Shadow
listed. I remember the announcement but that was it. Where can we find
out the price, final configuration, etc?

Anyone have any links to updated information?

RE: Legacy Shadow

2012-02-19 Thread Roger H Phebey
Hi guys,
Alan is in Birmingham England! You know the country that years ago exported
lots of people to the USA and the criminals to Australia (just joking
Bill). Now like people everywhere they decided to name many of the new towns
after their old home towns. Even the Germans did it and so did the French
in Canada except that not only did the French use the town names but they
also kept their own language! I have just remembered why the French kept
their language they got there before we did but General Wolfe sorted the
place out and made it into a colony.

Enough history and I look forward to seeing what Alan makes when I am
passing through Birmingham.
Cheers
Roger
