RE: Magnate router bits - Woodpeckers "UltraShear"

2023-08-12 Thread bulkeley
I don’t know but probably around 50 or 60 dollars fortunately I already own
several spiral bits I would look more closely if there was a 1 inch dia spiral
one or even a carbide insert one. Mac did you get the pics of my latest
finished lighted arch?

I agree - well worth checking out.

Bill - any idea as to how much it would cost to get one of their bits sent
"Down Under"?

Hello Everyone.

I know its Vacation season and most of our members are out on Leave/Vacation.
So I thought it would be a good idea to run over an old Idea that many of our
group takes for granted. ROUTER Bits!

And for the Price and range of stiles Magnate is hard to beat!

As for the Work horse of the Legacy Ornamental Mill is

Surface Planing ( Bottom Cleaning ) Router Bit - 1-1/2" Cutting Diameter; 1/2"
Shank Diameter; 15/32" Cutting Length; 2" Shank Length
<https://www.magnate.net/v/vspfiles/templates/134/images/clear1x1.gif>
Good for cleaning out dadoes and cutting wide square grooves. Leaves a smooth
clean finished surface. Also perfect for milling round, square, or flat stock
on the Legacy Ornamental Mill.

Our Price: $26.13

$26.13 is by far the best deal that you can find anywhere. At the two local
wood supply stores, Rockler and Wood Craft the starting price for any router
bit is $36.00 and UP. which for me this makes Magnate a even better deal.

Have a good night.

RE: Reeding and Magnate router bits

2014-03-27 Thread Jeff Becker
The easiest way I could explain figuring the spacing out without using CAD
would be Knowing how to figure the circumference is multiplying the Diameter
by Pi 2 inch circle X 3.1416 will have a circumference of 6.2832 then multiply
the diameter of the bit at plunge depth by the number of flutes subtract that
from the circumference then divide the balance by the number of spaces you will
then have your spacing.

things simple on this list. I'll have to try out Legacy's method and see if it
saves me any time from what I'm doing.

Tim the way Legacy recommends figuring flutes on CNC is to draw a circle the
diameter of the part, draw another circle the radius of the cutter. Plunge it
into the first circle the depth of the cut then make an array with the number
of cuts you plan. Then you can make another circle lower on the page and draw
lines to get an idea of the side view.

On the subject of reeding, there is a great legacy tutorial right here:
http://legacywoodworking.com/technique.cfm?techniqueID=4

There was never any chart, but I developed a computer program that mapped out
the possibilities. I'll see if I can turn it into a spreadsheet formula that
would work. That's an interesting project.

Legacy's Demo when I saw them, they made the same thing all day long, so I bet
it was pretty well figured out in advance and repeated often. :-)

Mike,

You bring up an interesting point. That generated my question:
How do you determine the correct (most effective) reeding bit to use on a
project? If you need a post (cylinder) that needs to have an outside diameter
of 4 1/2 inches - how do you determine the correct bit to use to achieve a
proper reeding job. (Meaning the first reed and the last reed you cut come
together perfectly - to the point where you can not tell where the start/finish
reed was because they all look alike.) My luck, I'd end up short or long -
meaning I'd need to either shrink or expand my last 2 or 3 cuts to close it
up. In this case you'd easily be able to tell where my start/finish point was
(and you'd hide it towards the back of the project).
I bet that when Legacy was demonstrating reeding at The Woodworking Shows they
were using a bit and cylinder combo that created the Perfect final product -
something they had calculated out long ago.

Leads me to ask: Did/does Legacy (or Magnate) have a table that provides the
needed info? (i.e. - if you use bit #1234, you can get near perfect results on
cylinders with diameters of w.w, x.x, y.y, or z.z. Using that bit with
any of the listed diameters will allow for proper closure between the initial
and final reeding cuts on that cylinder.

Thanks for the discussion - and looking forward to more on the topic.
For starters, what are the ideal cylinder sizes to pair up with the reeding
bits that Magnate currently sells?

MCLS is a place that i have ordered some of my router bits. They do
make some that fit the legacy type of milling. Take a look around their site to
see if they may have what you are looking for. Some bits look to be a little
cheaper than Magnate and some more.

Attached is a link to another one of their new products that looks
interesting to me to make a Z-axis. I have not had the shop time lately to
investigate to see if this will fit on the plate of the 1000 unit that i have,
but this looks to be much more beefy construction that some of the other router
mounts in the past that I have considered.

The funny thing is you need to really account as well for the depth of cut and
that is the actual circumference that should be worked with for a perfect part
diameter and bead height...In theory...I'm playing around with this right now.
Depth of cut might not matter in the real world. I'm looking at what the CAD
model says.

Tim the way Legacy recommends figuring flutes on CNC is to draw a circle
the diameter of the part, draw another circle the radius of the cutter. Plunge
it into the first circle the depth of the cut then make an array with the
number of cuts you plan. Then you can make another circle lower on the page
and draw lines to get an idea of the side view.

Mike,

You bring up an interesting point. That generated my question:
How do you determine the correct (most effective) reeding bit to use on
a project? If you need a post (cylinder) that needs to have an outside
diameter of 4 1/2 inches - how do you determine the correct bit to use to
achieve a proper reeding job. (Meaning the first reed and the last reed you cut
come together perfectly - to the point where you can not tell where the
start/finish reed was because they all look alike.) My luck, I'd end up short
or long - meaning I'd need to either shrink or expand my last 2 or 3 cuts
to close it up. In this case you'd easily be able to tell where my
start/finish point was (and you'd hide it towards the back of the project).
I bet that when Legacy was demonstrating reeding at The Woodworking
Shows they were using a bit and cylinder combo that created the Perfect final
product - something they had calculated out long ago.

Leads me to ask: Did/does Legacy (or Magnate) have a table that

In Cad program you are right about using the plunge depth to figure the
circumference, But with the method I stated using Pi you need to use the
diameter of the part but the diameter of the bit at the lunge depth.

The easiest way to measure the depth of the bit at plunge depth is to plunge it
in a scrap piece of wood and use a digital caliper.

The funny thing is you need to really account as well for the depth of cut and
that is the actual circumference that should be worked with for a perfect part
diameter and bead height...In theory...I'm playing around with this right now.
Depth of cut might not matter in the real world. I'm looking at what the CAD
model says.

Mac,
As long as you are using set indexes and not using marks you drew on the
surface of the piece, every single cut will be the same. there will be
no chance of large and small spacing. I start by getting my diameter,
minus 1/16 I waste in the cut so 4-1/8 would be 4 I then figure out how
wide I want my reed, lets say 3/8 or .375. I take 4 X pi 3.14= 12.56
the I divide 12.56 by my reed size .625 = 20.096 Close enough to 20 to
achieve the desired effect. Crank handle index would be 20 divided by 4
= 5 inch pitch gearing.

much more beefy construction that some of the other router

same professionalism a truly great company to deal with. It’s a shame they
don’t do any legacy parts much anymore as well I always got what I asked for

Side Reeding Carbide Tipped Router Bit, 2 Flute border=0 /

Ive been looking for a reeding bit what a good sized radius but one with a
small bead hight, (I dont want a deap cut, but one with a well defined radius,
To me it looks like the 3/8 radius is the best choice for my project.

The purpose of this message is two-fold, One to let you all know what I found,
and did not know that Magnate sells, and the Other is to ask you all if you
know any other router bit company that sells a bit like what Im looking for.

Thanks a lot. I hope everyone has a good day

MCLS is a place that i have ordered some of my router bits. They do make
some that fit the legacy type of milling. Take a look around their site to
see if they may have what you are looking for. Some bits look to be a
little cheaper than Magnate and some more.

Attached is a link to another one of their new products that looks
interesting to me to make a Z-axis. I have not had the shop time lately to
investigate to see if this will fit on the plate of the 1000 unit that i
have, but this looks to be much more beefy construction that some of the
other router mounts in the past that I have considered.

Re: Magnate router bits

2014-03-26 Thread CURTIS GEORGE

Thank you Dexter. I will take a look , at the router bits.

As far as your Z axis idea, its one that I have had as well in the past, The
only problem that I can see what this, I just dont see much of an advantage of
using it, Meaning, Yes it looks solidly built, and Im sure that tight
tolerances will be easily make-able., But you will not be able to get any more
depth of cut than what you already have with the plunge router. Of a matter of
course you could modify that unit, but is the work worth the effort??? (that's
a personal choice that only you can make.)
To tell you the truth, I too, am on the quest of making myself a better Z axis
for my 1000ex as well.
I will let you and everyone know how my project works out, After Im done. ;-)
I wish you luck, and a good night.
talk to you more latter.
