On small projects I don't usually bother, but on bigger things I do sign and
put a date. On things that might matter in the future, I will write on the
bottom of some drawer what stain color/number and brand used and what top coat
was used. That would just make things easier if the whole item or some part
needs refinishing in the future.

On your projects how do you mark your works when done? I mean branding irons,
stating who made this product. A marker of some-kind? or date???
Do things like that just don't interest you. or is it not important? What do
you think?

RE: Making your mark?

2015-04-06 Thread Michael Kratky
Great blog,

The thing I dread most after completing a fine project is to ruin a nice piece
by a messing up the signature; have tried most everything over the years
depending on what I make whether it be canes, pepper mills, bowls, platters,
plates, vases, coffee grinders, arts and craft furniture or fine 18th century
furniture (my specialty). I have used branding irons, woodburing “pens”, laser
engraved wood discs such as what Ron Brown now sells, high speed engravers, but
my go to method is to use a fine tipped Sharpie before the finish goes on. My
wife is an artist and accordingly when we go to gallery openings I tend to look
1st at the quality of the artist signature, just my thing.

Re: Making your mark?

2015-04-03 Thread CURTIS GEORGE
Hello Roger
Our lock shop at the hospital uses those to stamp keys, There is no bounce, or
double stamping like the old spring tool use to do, He ( the lock smith) really
likes them. I have the old faction stamps sets, like what I used But the sets
that I own are much smaller 1/8 and 5/16 sets of number and latter stamps,
aligning up the stamps with out a straight edge takes some practice to make
things look good,.
Perhaps I should make a bracket to hold the Numbers under my CAG so I can stamp
the dates and make it changeable for the up coming years.??? The 1/8 set
should do nicely. I will have to look into that Idea !

Bill your idea of a wood burning pen sounds great, but pen-man-ship is very
poor, I dont think I will try your idea, although I do think its a good one.

Have a good night all.

Hay there again.
Its almost time to go to church. the stamps were bought at a tool supply house.
PST tools. http://www.pts-tools.com/cgi/CGP2HOME the stamp can be sold as a set
or independently the three stamps cost me under $40.00. My son picked up a
railroad spike and gave it to me last week. So I just figured the timing was
right for today's project. I think I will do another one, but the next set will
be smaller. these stamps are 1/4. and for the price I think its worth it! ;-)

RE: Making your mark? Marque?

2015-04-03 Thread MWF
I "Marque" the items I craft. I was brought up that you "signed" your work (starting with all the homework and tests in school) - and it had better be well made enough to "deserve" your marque.Yes, there are some things so small that I don't bother - but for the most part, I try to put the date and my name and/or company name on whatever I have a hand in in making. If others are involved (team effort) I encourage all to sign/place their name on it.I'd like to have a branding iron - but like others have mentioned, they can get really pricy. The ones you heat with a propane torch are less expensive than the ones you plug into 120/220v electricity.I do like the idea Max stated - permanently affix a shiney new penny of the year you made it.Happy Easter Passover to all! Re: Making your mark? Marque?

2015-04-03 Thread MWF
Thanks Curtis. However just the thought of a "wiener brander" (look part way down on the right side of the brand-first.com site) - makes me cringe. ;-)It is a neat idea if you have a catering service or a hot dog cart at the local baseball park. And like I mentioned - they get right pricy real fast. BUT - If you are making quite a few items and selling them (generating a decent income stream) - then do it up right and have a really nice electric iron made and marque all your handicrafts.Mac-Original Message-

2015-04-03 Thread Okla Mike (Liltwisted)
I for one have never marked a project, I'd be writing all day. But I
can see if they were going to be heirlooms a mark or signature and date
would be a fun thing to be discovered in the future.

Re: Making your mark?

2015-04-03 Thread CURTIS GEORGE
Hay there again.
Its almost time to go to church. the stamps were bought at a tool supply house.
PST tools. http://www.pts-tools.com/cgi/CGP2HOME the stamp can be sold as a set
or independently the three stamps cost me under $40.00. My son picked up a
railroad spike and gave it to me last week. So I just figured the timing was
right for today's project. I think I will do another one, but the next set will
be smaller. these stamps are 1/4. and for the price I think its worth it! ;-)

Gota Run Now!!!
