RE: New member and question
Hello welcome to our group First regularly clean inside the rails sawdust will stop smooth sliding also spray them with a dry lubricant like dyna-glide or similar, not wd 40 or crc type lubricants the dust sticks to it. And most importantly check and make sure all the aluminium rails have all been installed the correct way round. the round slides that slide in them go in the side of the rails that have a small groove running down the middle the rails are not the same both sides. this is usually the main course of tight saddle movement. The saddles must move freely or it will damage the leadscrew half nut.. Filing the round slides (top hats as they are called ) is not advised unless nothing else works its only a last resort otherwise if the tightness is due to another reason you will end up with the saddle being too sloppy. Hope this helps again welcome and please post pictures of what you do we are always interested in seeing Bill -Original Message- From: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com [mailto:legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of E Mall Sent: Thursday, 16 May 2019 7:25 AM To: Legacy Ornamental Mills Subject: New member and question Hello, my name is Eric and i have had a LOM 900 for about two months. I have been using it mostly for fun, and for roughing out long spindles for chairs from dried rough split billets from logs. They make the lathe bounce quite a bit if you dont make them sorta round first. The LOM is much faster than an electric plane or heaven forbid a drawknife. Question is: i have read a couple posts on here talking about adjusting to make the axis slide smoothly, and i suffer from the same plight of not being able to slide it by hand at all. Anyone have any knowledge of how this is done? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Legacy Ornamental Mills" group. Re: New member and question
Hi Eric,You've come to the right place for answers. Curt is spot on with his advice. You will be AMAZED at how much "stuff" gets packed/jammed up in the channels of the aluminum extrusions. Use your cell phone's camera and a strong flashlight to check that the channels are clear. Then, as Curt suggested, apply Dyna-Glide. It's Great stuff! Two more things to check:1. That the spacing between the various rails are such that they are as parallel as you can get them.2. Refer to Owner's Manual for the Mill as regards the correct positioning of the extrusions. They have 4 "faces" - and you may think they are all identical. If the person that did the initial assembly thought that too, you may have an improperly put together Mill. One "face" has a fine line molded down its center. - longitudinally. Your manual will instruct you as to which way that face of the extrusion should be oriented. I don't recall how the manual says to put it - but your manual will specify.Welcome to The Group.Mac-Original Message- From: 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills Sent: May 16, 2019 12:31 AM To: legacy-ornamental-mills@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: New member and question Hello EricHave you tried Dyna-Glide? its a wax based spray lubricant, This spray should be one of the first tools you need, to keep the Legacy moving as smooth as possible.I would suggest to you to clean the rails and slides as well as you can, and then check to see if everything is in the correct placement. You should be able to move the carriage with one or two fingers, it should take ounces . to move the carriage not pounds , start with a break down of the Legacy / Carriage and rails to see if your problem is dirt or mis-alignment.I wish you luck.
