Re: Wavy lines

2018-01-13 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
Hello again Richard
How about not over thinking this one?  with almost any router bit you can get a
profile cut with what I call a bump cut,  (a router bit cutting form the side,)
you set your Y axis stops so that the router bit only kisses the wood when you
move the Y axis.
Using this method you can get a number of different looking cuts around the
circumference of your wood from any of your router  bits.  all you need to do
it bump, index and bump again to come up with a pattern, depending on the
router bit used, the depth of your cut/bump. and indexing of the spindle you
can come up with all kinds of designs without making any jigs or attachments to
your Legacy.
I will see if I can get into the shop today and take some pictures of different
design cuts for you.More latter.

Re: Wavy lines

2018-01-13 Thread Richard Ellis
Hi Bill
I am trying to get the Revo do do *many many* different tasks, it being a
Craftsman Revo it has a few more bits ,vices etc. that allows it to do much
of what my *Woodrat* can do. I will most likely get rid of it and the old
Woodchuck, very handy but does take up a lot of space in my shop.
I have looked again at your "Z axis" and still aim to make one, even though
the Triton depth adjusters are excellent one could always do with a tilt
and more depth of cut.
If everything was easy life would be boring, but age takes it's toll !!!
I once owned a large bandsaw that would take 6 foot diameter tree trunks
and slab it into boards -now I have come down to a Scroll saw and can
hardly see the blades.

Shouldn’t be a problem tims device bolts on to the existing standard gears
either on the revo or the other mills

And you will drive it with the leadscrew motor with your spindle motor
disconnected. I haven’t seen his device on a woodchuck but i would imagine it
would fit, woodchuck owners would know that one

I have a geared motor driving my spindle it is a geared 50 RPM 415 volt 3 phase
50 cycle, controlled by an inverter- I can control the speed from very slow
up to 75 cycles. I:E hand speeds

It has a 'V' pulley about six inch dia. driving the two inch pulley on the
spindle--- it gives me a great choice of speed.

Now if I can work out how to use Tim's crank wave system by connecting up to
the leadscrew then I may be able to get it to work thus

The large pulley would have the crank driving a rocker fixed to the leadscrew.

Am I dreaming, or have any of the other forum members ideas on the matter.??

I have been trying to find other LOM users here in the U.K. To discuss my
thoughts on making more use of my Revo and Woodchuck, I have only found two
and they do not use them now, just tried it out and then shelved it, Any one
can turn a few spirals etc, but these LOM's are quite an interesting pastime if
one has the time and like me, retired!!

I hope you can understand my ramblings, and I await more suggestions from other
members besides Curt,Tim and yourself.

RE: Wavy lines

2018-01-12 Thread Tim Krause
Curt's response makes me wonder if I did not understand what you were asking
Richard.  Curt mentioned a swash plate, and I can say that I have done this.
It will make a wave around the circumference of an object.  The number of waves
is controlled by the gear ratios.  I had to resort to a chain and sprockets
setup eliminating the swing arm.  I have never shown the group this setup, but
I did hint to the possibility when I was exploring options with the rotary
table to create rose engine patterns.  Curt's PDF file really shows some
feasible options.

RE: Wavy lines

2018-01-12 Thread Bill Bulkeley
Think i would use tims wave attachment along with my ball attachment
http://ornamentalmills.com/Bill_Bulkeley/ball_attachment/index.html

To make waves on the end of round object i think that would work

Or a side reeding bit and template with tims wave attachment these would put
waves from the end to the circumference

But to put wavy rings on the end umm that’s hard one perhaps hinge the router
on a base on the saddle and have a gear shaped Rosette behind the chuck and
have a styles running on the rosette and attached to the router for a zig zag
up and down movement as the work rotates and use a side cutting router bit to
cut the waves,

If you can follow what I just said I think that might work sort of like how
rose engine works it’s an idea I been playing around in my mind off and on for
a few years .the problem with this idea your limited to sort work .

My first initial thought would be this could be done on the model 200 that uses
a template to control the z axis.  That thought leads to Bill's side ways
router mount that he did on the Revo.
