My question is what is a good source for the double sided tape used to
hold the project in place while milling it? Does it have to be the
foam kind? I got a partial roll of the foam stuff with the machine,
but there is no brand stamp on it so don't know what kind it is or
from where to order it. I've been looking online and there seems to be
different kinds, going from about $7 a roll up to $20. A suggestion
for an online source would be appreciated.

RE: double sided tape

2016-06-06 Thread Bill Bulkeley
No I have not tried it yet I only found out about it on a pen turners sight,
denatured alcohol or mentholated spirits as we call it will work as well but
will cloud the ca glue which is not desirable when using ca glue as a finishing
coat. Apparently it’s all about water content

Denatured has 5% water content where acetone has only 1% water and is less
likely to cloud the glue.

Personally it doesn’t bother me either way as I am only gluing if I finish with
ca glue and this I have done I use nothing and just wait for it to dry. The
reason I look for an alternative accelerator is I can’t get the stuff here for
some reason no one stocks it here much

And all the different double sided tapes you mentioned I have not seen either
but I have not intensely searched for them either

But every hardware and paint shop has masking tape I will be looking at the
best adhesive type when I am next in town, so an alternative to double sided
tape is probably of more interest to me than others.

A side note to ca glue I like to use it with wood glue ca glue on the edges and
wood glue in the middle so I don’t have to wait for glues to dry if my project
has a time issue.

To answer the first question, on a late night Sunday, your choice of double
side tapes that is appropriate to use can be bought at most places that have
hardware. Carpet tape is the simple answer. The details is there is two
kinds, one that is cloth reinforced and then simple vinyl type material. It's
carpet tape. The cloth type is outdoor type. Both of these types "sort of
work". I find the outdoor type can be too aggressive so you have to use less.
It is my personal preference of tapes to use. The indoor release better, but
tends to fail if you do not use enough. When I apply both type, I will
"burnish" or hammer the wood down to the waste board. With the cloth type I
will have a slot milled under the piece to be able to pry the wood up easier.
I also clean the mdf with acetone when there seems to be too much adhesive
residue in my favorite milling spot. This help with adhesion as well.

Now, if you have time or a woodturning supply place in town such as a Rockler
or a Woodcrafters, Woodcraft, etc, you have what is known as Turners tape.
They come in different strengths of adhesion. Some of the more aggressive tape
can be cloth reinforced, but that is not always true. The different types do
relate to the added cloth. I do buy the highest tack they have which is the
most expensive, It's properties are like outdoor carpet tape so you can use
less.

Another less thought of tape is found at the Sewing supply places like
Joanne's. It's seamstress tape. It's often found in a clear variety. It
works well generally, but it's so thin and high tack the releasing is very
difficult. You mileage will vary on this type.

That's basically what I know, and welcome to the group Phil.

Bill, I have to give the acetone a try as an accelerant. It makes a lot of
sense.

3M VHB is made for permanent mountings. Really permanent. One company uses it
to attach the frames that hold solar panels on the roofs of motorhomes. No
other attachments (e.g., screws).

I’ve used it for trim on my motorhome. It’s fairly expensive but works very
well.

I think it would destroy either the substrate or the part in a temporary

RE: double sided tape

2015-01-13 Thread Bill Bulkeley
I did think it was for a more permanent fixing but if its that strong then I
was thinking only use small amounts

I do have to attach my kitchen slab bench tops to the cabinets underneath when
I do my kitchen. Instead of the more conventional way of attachment to allow
for timber movement this 3M VHB might be a good and quick alternative..

But getting back to legacy the issue people seem to have with using double
sided tape is that it might not hold

That is why I was thinking this stuff might work quite well .removing it I
believe might be the only trouble

But perhaps small squares of it instead of long strips like other tape might be
the answer what do you all think

3M VHB is made for permanent mountings. Really permanent. One company uses it
to attach the frames that hold solar panels on the roofs of motorhomes. No
other attachments (e.g., screws).

I’ve used it for trim on my motorhome. It’s fairly expensive but works very
well.

I think it would destroy either the substrate or the part in a temporary
application.

2014-02-28 Thread CURTIS GEORGE
Thanks James, That is a new one on me. I did not know that Gorrilla Glue made a
double sided tape. Question. The biggest problem that I run into with all the
DST that Ive used in the past is temp. none to the tapes did well when the
temp. was under 50 deg. (which my shop in most of the year.)

I personaly like hot melt glue.

It generally comes down to tapes that are reinforced with cloth or not. Those
are designed for outdoor use so they have a healthier grip. It can lead to too
much bite making it difficult to remove. I use a dash of mineral spirits if
that happens.

Martin the link dose not work, But a number of company's sell double sided tape
for wood turning, Rockler, and WoodCraft as well as Peachtree and a lot of
others sell double sided tape for woodturners.

As for my self, I find that tape works well when temp. is above 50 deg. F.
below that the tape just dose not have the holding power it should. I like hot
melt glue.

I would turn a jam chuck and that would be enough to hold a bowl to machine

Re: double sided tape

2011-04-04 Thread Tim Krause
I have not weighed in because I dislike using double sided tape and would
prefer a mechanical connection or clamping scheme. I can't really recommend
any brand in particular but of the carpet tapes that I have tried, the
outdoor - fiberglass reinforced types seem to work the best. Some day I
would like to try an official woodturners tape that wood supply companies
sell but I could never justify the cost.

The rotary table and tape seems to be the biggest problem child. I think
the problem is the twisting force on the wood and the cutter. If you added
a few more stop blocks to prevent the turning of the wood, it would be a
better solution. There's a good example of using blocks to hold the work on
this page.

http://ornamentalmills.com/turningaround/rotary%20table.htm

I think your confusing my desires with reality. I plan on showing how to
make a replacement rotary table waste board but I have not got around to it
yet. I had an article on how I added a threaded center to my rotary table
so I can use a through bolt on particular parts that I make. That article
can be found here:
http://ornamentalmills.com/tips/threaded_insert/rotary_table_threaded_insert.html

I should have made clear that I have used the glue primarily to
surface boards, not to turn. I did try once to use the tape on the
rotary table, and when I got to an edge where my taping was clearly
inadequate, the rosette went airborne. Tim hasn't weighed in, but I
remember his post about replacing his spoil board on the rotary table
because of the damage over time at least in part from glue. I do know
that the next time I use the table, I will use hot glue rather than
tape!

Re: double sided tape

2011-04-03 Thread begatbrown
Bill,

I tend to use a spoil board beneath the piece, and my experience is
that the glue damages the spoil board but not the part. Then I heat
the glue so it will come off easily. To date I have not had to come
up with a more sophisticated technique because I'm mostly use glue
when I'm surfacing boards that will next go to the planer.

Re: double sided tape

2011-04-03 Thread Cole Andrews
So far I have tried the carpet a dozen times or so. I live in SE Georgia so the
climate is usually pretty warm and humid. I haven't had any problems yet. My
only complaint is peeling the back off to stick it down.

Thank you so far more negative feedback than positive on the double sided
tape

Which sort of confirmed my reluctance to try to use it again

But what a bout the hot glue how strong do you find that and how hard or
easy is it

To remove the work and also the glue from the work?

Hello Bill,

Thus far I have used double-sided tape about a dozen times, not a
lot. I don't like using it. It's not cheap, and the times that I've
skimped on the tape, I've regretted the results. I now use hot glue
and long for a vacuum clamp.

Re: double sided tape

2011-04-03 Thread curt george

Hello Bill
For me Double sided tape is not practical. The tape will not stick well in
temperatures lower than 50 deg. F.
I've used a number of different types from 3" wide carpet tape. to 3/4" wide
3M double sided (Hang anything tape sold at every hardware store That I've
ever been in.)
When the stuff sticks, it normal sticks well, I have friends that use it a
lot and love the stuff. But for me , since I work in a garage where the
temperatures are normally under 50 deg. most of the year around, I don't
trust the stuff a lot.

That's just my two cents worth of it.

Have a great day.
