You can't use the entire program on a U3. Only U3 compatible applications
can be added to it. I removed the U3 from mine and downloaded Legacy
standard to it and then I copied my data files to it. However, when
downloading Legacy to it, you have to be do it on a computer that does not
have legacy on it or it will put it on the same disk as the previous
version. I used a second computer to download to the removable drive.

Is Legacy compatible with a U3 flash drive? I'd like to take my data &

some feedback.

Re: [LegacyUG] event dates

2006-07-24 Thread Cathy

Hi Carlos,
You've misunderstood.
In Legacy you have a choice of including Baptism amongst the
birth/death events OR with other events like Graduation.
You also have the choice, when including it in the birth/death events
section, of calling it Baptism or Christening.

You can also place Alternate dates for these events in the Event/Fact
section if you find conflicting information - and later if you find
the Alternate date better supported, swapping them over - See Event -
Options Button.

This is the same in Standard and Deluxe.

Does Legacy Deluxe do this?

Carlos,

No need to enter data in the fields on the individual information screen and
in the events. If you put the baptism, etc in the field on the individual's
screen, same as you do their name, birth, etc. Then if you learn of
conflicting information, such as for the birth a different location then use
the event alt birth, etc. Be aware that if later you swap the event alt info
for the info in their individual screen only the date will swap, not the
Description or Place information.

Ann,
It's only the Description information that doesn't swap as there is
no place for Description in the main events. Place swaps fine as do sources.

RE: [LegacyUG] To keep or not to keep?

2006-07-24 Thread Linda Bischoff
I would keep the letters in sleeves in a 3-ring binder. Judging by the use
of e-mail for correspondence, these letters will one day be a novelty for
descendants. If at all possible, I would also keep the envelope. While it's
a good idea to transcribe the letter for your computer files, some people
will always like to see the original, if its available. Being able to
actually hold a letter written by an ancestor makes one feel closer to them
than all the transcribed words. Also, the handwriting itself often gives
clues to the personality as much as the words.

Subject: [LegacyUG] To keep or not to keep?

Genealogy has mainly been a lark for me over the years fueled by curiosity.
Filling in the blanks was the goal, not documenting every word. Using Legacy
made me rethink my approach, along with communication with a cousin who does
it the "right" way. Her records made me realize that it is important for my
descendents to be able to find where I got my information. I am slowly
documenting what I can of my research instead of gleefully adding
names...not much fun in that! This list is being enormously helpful.

When my parents died (father in 1996 and mother in 2003), I gathered all the
papers they had saved relating to genealogy. Happily, I had spent time with
each of them identifying old photos and documenting stories. The papers have
been sitting for a long time. A few months ago, I finally started organizing
and transcribing them. I am archiving original legal and other important
documents, of course. However, there were reams of letters and notes from
family members. I have transcribed them verbatim and noted that they were
handwritten letters from so-and-so, then discarded them to save space. Now I
am thinking that I am destroying original records and should be given 20
lashes! But, says me, these are like oral history, not solid documents like
birth certificates and such. It seems that trying to keep every scrap of
paper is unwieldy and unnecessary.

How do you decide what to preserve?

Judie

Cary is on the right track here about donating your files to a local society or
library. They will
usually store them in their "manuscript collection" and generally make them
available to the public.
I have found wonderful things in manuscript collections through NUCMUC
(National Union Catalog of
Manuscript Collections) on the Library of Congress webpage. This was in print
form in the eighties
and available in most large libraries, but is now online.

I understand that most of the old diaries, letters, postcards, and manuscripts
are either thrown out
by heirs or end up on ebay. Much better to donate them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Relationships not Husband/Wife

2006-07-24 Thread Susan Daily

Well well well - if you look at the email "Gedcom Import Issue" - I
think we have a solution that does not require having or knowing how
to use access.

I created a sample file with Female Partner1 on the left and Female
Partner2 on the right (M and F) and Adopted Child. I then exported
them to a GEDCOM. Using Notepad, I changed the sex of Female Partner1
to F. I then imported the file into a new family file. The sex of both
partners is Female, and both are grayed out.

I don't know what will happen if you merge this or link to an existing
family, but Judie, perhaps you can try this, and see if it works.

Re: [LegacyUG] Relationships not Husband/Wife

2006-07-24 Thread d . mossfritch

Good Day Susan,

Hopefully my response will be accepted by the email list as I am writing from work via an Internet connection to my email. I work at a medical equipment and software company which figures in my later response.

Yes, Legacy 6 should accept the changed GEDCOM (a very early version did not import spouse identified as the same gender). Unfortunately once the changed GEDCOM has been imported into Legacy there are "problems" in reports and other areas. You might want to read through the information I have at http://www.moss-fritch.com/legacy.htm

Slightly more than one percent of the world's population is genetically neither XX (female) or XY (male). I have two individuals in my own records with current "social and government" information identifying them as different "genders". One records says one thing and another says the opposite. These two individuals are genetically XXY. Unfortunately neither individual "fits" into the gender categories allowed by Legacy 6.

As I wrote above, I work for a medical equipment and software company in the radiation treatment of cancer. Our software, as does most medical software, recognizes the small percentage of people within the population who do not fit the assumed female/male limits. Our software actually has a couple of additional categories.

So, while changing a GEDCOM in a text editor will work, please understand that Legacy has a number of "built in" (logic checks) that will limit and even change the desired gender designations.

Best,

 Denise L. Moss-Fritch

[LegacyUG] Census - Citation

2006-07-24 Thread diana Ericson
I agree, that the sourcing/citions can some times be hair raising, but I
have found when the fields just don't seem to work and look the way I want
them.I skip them all.

I give it a source list name, that works and makes sense for me.

I then skip all fields and go right to the publication facts and set up my
source exactly the way I want it to print/appear. I check it using the
output tab, until it looks just the way I want it to. Not a perfect
solution, but my source output is just the way I want it.

RE: [LegacyUG] To keep or not to keep?

2006-07-24 Thread genealogist
Absolutely! There are some "treasures" I would never consider throwing out,
such as a set of letters from Sweden to the family in America, including
descriptions of the death and burial of each of the parents, as well as
anecdotes about their lives back in Sweden. They are quite fragile now, so I
have copied them, sealed them in acid-free sleeves and placed them in a
binder to protect them from light. These will be passed on to my children or
donated to the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center at Augustana
College.

On this track, I am beginning to wonder whether I should do a better job
with letters of this kind, lengthy biographies written by family members,
personal histories written by the person, newspaper articles, etc. I have
placed them all under Notes, but looking at the print preview, it all looks
a bit "thrown together." Is there a more polished way to handle these with
Legacy?

[LegacyUG] Pedigree Chart - Using Color for Emphasis

Sticking to the topic sort of,
I have a very precious copy of my great grandfather Victorio Faustino's
signature from when he signed as a Godfather on a baptism
certificate, in the Azores Islands. A picture of that will go into my
LEGACY.
    I have greeting
cards from the 1940's with my grandmother's hand writing on them as well as the
envelopes, wild horses  you know? I also have every letter written to me by
my parents, they are going into acid free binder pages for my descendents so at
least they will know them in a more personal way than just stories and
pictures.

Re: [LegacyUG] What is the value of a Legacy backup?

2006-07-24 Thread Heather Stovold
The point of making backups

Computers are not perfect.  A virus can erase your data in any program (or the programs too).  Your operating system could crash requiring you to reinstall, and maybe format the harddrive.  Your harddrive could stop working.

And - why I advise people to keep a backup somewhere else (bank box, or someones house...) - you could have a house fire or other disaster.

Heck, I even keep a backup in another province incase of a larger scale disaster!

Re: [LegacyUG] What is the value of a Legacy backup?

2006-07-24 Thread Bruce Jones
The reason for making a backup on the SAME computer is that your main
Legacy file can become corrupted BUT your backup is fine so you can
recreate your main file from the backup.

Obviously you also want to make backups in some way that is not part of
your computer and also that can be stored remotely in some manner.

I backup EVERY time I exit Legacy; but then, my main file is on a USB
drive and I backup to my desktop computer's hard drive as well as to my
laptop computer's hard drive (depending on which I am currently using.
So if I were to lose the entire hard drive of one of my computers AND
the USB drive as well, I will still have a backup on the other
compter's hard drive.  That will not help if I had a house fire.  That
is why I need a remote backup as well.  I do this by sending my file to
several family members.On 7/24/06, Brian Balkcom <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Re: [LegacyUG] What is the value of a Legacy backup?

2006-07-24 Thread Klompje
Brian,

Since you're working in a database that gets updated al the time you
enter something, it's hard to go back to a state that you know the
database was correct when you make a mistake.
When you open a textfile and edit it and realise you accidentely
deleted an important part, but you can't remember what it was like when
you started (and undo won't help), you just close the file without
saving, reopen the file and you're back in business.
When backing up, you can go back to a "trusted state".

Also, I found that backing up in Legacy compresses the files more than
my ZIP-program would. So I back it up in Legacy and frequently I move
the backup files to a CD or DVD, like I would with a copy of all my
changed files -- not as often as I should, but pretty often ;-)

A couple more reasons that haven't yet been mentioned . . . .

It's recommended to make a backup prior to making any "major" changes
to your database. Then if something goes wrong with your updates, or
you don't like the result, it's likely easier to restore from the
backup than to undo your edits.

I have 2 different physical hard drives in my computer. So even
though I'm making backups to the same computer they are on different
hard drives and therefore protect against a fairly common computer
problem -- a hard drive failure. Realize . . . it's not "if" your
hard drive will fail, it's "when"!

[LegacyUG] Change of name and dob. (fornerly search string)

2006-07-24 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Jan,

The change of name is straightforward just use AKA and details in notes for
eg.. In the UK it was not all that uncommon for people to lie about the ages
of their children on censuses (to avoid child labour laws). Incorrect ages
were also given in order to enlist in the armed forces early and on birth
certificates (to avoid being fined for late registration) wrt the latter,
unless there is a church record it is impossible to tell; the former can
quite often be determined from birth certificates or parish registers.

In event there is only one dob (or age) and no matter what anybody decides
for themselves is irrelevant, other than the insight it gives into the
person.

I recently discovered that my G Grandfather changed his name and year of
birth some time before he married my G Grandmother.

I am wondering how I can record that as it isn't just a matter of using AKA
the year difference interferes with that.

Any suggestions?

The Legacy Backup doesn't restrict you to doing a backup to the same drive
or even the same machine.
- you can do the backup to anywhere and copy to a CD or ram stick
- you can do the backup to another physical drive
- you can do a backup across a network

I keep my data on one machine and backup to another, so that barring a fire
I shouldn't lose both. I also keep every backup and occasionally "dump" old
ones to a spare drive. To cover the fire problem I will probably copy
occasionally to my web site in a passworded folder (you've all got me
paranoid now about having a fire!).

As the copy on my laptop is always out of date, I'm also toying with the
other idea of storing the data on a ram stick and backing up to the hard
drives, but how reliable are the sticks compared to a disk?

Subject: [LegacyUG] What is the value of a Legacy backup?

Trusting the validity of the ancient axiom that "the only dumb question is
the one that isn't asked" I venture the following:
What is the value of a Legacy backup? I understand the value of a backup of
information that is not on the same computer, but I don't understand its
value when on the same computer. Consequently, I have never used the Legacy
backup feature. I have sometimes made CD backups of my data, but have often
been haunted by the thought that everyone else is making "Legacy backups",
but I am not, because I don't see the value of doing so. Please edumacate
me.

With the talk again about making back ups I decided to try

Have you tried making a CD lately?  It's not my forte, but
here is what I've learned about it:

inexpensive CDs only allow you to write to them once--much like using a
piece of paper--if you edit the file at all, then it must be burned to
another CD
don't confuse CDs with DVDs, which can also be burned; if you put a DVD
into a CD burner, your file won't copy  (I don't know if #1 also
applies to DVDs)
good news: it seems that computers purchased in the last couple of years
only require drag & drop (remember floppies?); as long as you buy
formatted CDs, they are created by (disclaimer: this is for PCs):

  right click on start
select search or explore to locate your file
  copy the file
select the appropriate drive for burning CDs
  paste
use  (seriously--make sure it's there; I "made" CDs for a
presentation once, only to learn in front of the class that one of my
teenagers had been burning CDs--not labeling them-- and storing them in
the container with new CDs !) Hope this
  helps.DawnPatti Hobbs wrote:
Pat,Different CD burning software work a little
differently. Usually your computer will have software (Nero, Roxio,
etc.).  If you open that you will be presented with two screens, one of
which is your hard drive's filing system and the other for files to burn. If
you click on the file in the window for your computer and click on an arrow,
it will "move" the file to the box to be burned to CD.After you've selected
all the files you want to burn, you then click on whatever is available that
says to start creating or burning the CD.However, another thing I
wanted to tell you is that quite often when computers "crash" the whole hard
drive isn't lost.  I've never lost a file from a hard drive even though
I've been using a computer for about ten years. Even if something is wrong
with the Windows portion of the hard drive so that it won't boot up, etc.,
you can piggy back the hard drive onto another computer and access it and
the files just like a jump drive or an external hard drive. I know you
wouldn't feel comfortable doing this, but it might be worth your time
finding someone to do this for you rather than reconstructing your Legacy
database.PattiPat wrote:

step-by-step how to put a copy of the file on a CD.  I really
need specifics because I have not done this before.  I did get
one response, but it was not specific enough to help me.  I
regularly back my file up on the C drive.  The file is called
familyfile.fdb, and I notice that when I back it up and creates a
zip file.  Does that make sense?

Re: [LegacyUG] Making a backup of my family file

2006-07-24 Thread Cathy

Hi Tom,
This may be the problem.

If you are trying to open the file on the CD, you can't as you can't
write to the CD from Legacy.

You have to copy the file back to your hard drive.

If you have put it back on your hard drive, you may need to change
the file attribute from Read Only by right clicking on the File,
choose Properties and untick the box.

Re: [LegacyUG] What is the value of a Legacy backup?

2006-07-24 Thread Carl Cox
Brian noted that he kept his data on another computer, or another place. I
wonder if he was referring to the zip backup process rather than just
copying the data files? In that case, the backup is much smaller than the
data files, but with today's large hard drives is changing the data to a zip
file of that much value?
