Re: [LegacyUG] Assigned Sources

2006-09-05 Thread Cathy

Hi Denise,

If you have attached a source to the wrong event, you can copy it to
the Source Clipboard and then paste it wherever appropriate. Then
delete the wrong entry.

On the Assigned Sources window, you'll find one of the icons is Copy
Source to Clipboard. (lower left of this screen) This copies both the
Master Source and the Source Detail to the Clipboard.

You can then put the cursor next to the correct field and click the
single blue line of the Source Clipboard to assign the Source on the
Clipboard to that field.

When you have more than one source for an event, you may wish to
reorder them. That's what the black arrows are for.

Hope that clarifies,
Cathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Can not search IGI on www.familysearch.org

2006-09-05 Thread ronald ferguson
I doubt if you are doing anything wrong Mary. You could have a look at
Search Options and check that the search options are what you would like.
Like all searches it is a matter of compromise, eg. should one only have an
approximate birthdate then searching that date +/- 5 years is unlikely to
find a marriage. On the other hand taking a midpoint between the two likely
dates might well produce far too many results.

Like you obviously do, I tend to check directly if I do not find what I am
looking for at first. That said, I find it a most useful tool.

For others who use this tool I would also suggest that having found a
possibility one looks at the actual file (click the @ button) and check
for family and pedigree. I have often found that a full family can be hidden
behind one of those buttons!

re-log-in under Options, as Geof suggested. I am now being able to search
the IGI via Legacy. I do find that oftimes when the Legacy seach does not
find a person, if I will search on www.familysearch.org I find that person.

Hi Cathy,

A small point, but I would advise a little caution about using tabs in
notes (or any other fields for that matter). If at some time one wishes to
create pages then AFAIK html cannot reproduce the tabs and the format will
have to be changed manually using html.

Hi,

If you are typing in any Legacy notes you need to use CTRL+Tab to enter a
tab space.

If you have the data in a table, you need to change it to text with tabs
separating the columns in order to include it in notes and be able to
print it in Legacy reports.

You may need to add more tabs to get it to line up. I've found that
sometimes I need to add some spaces as well, especially if there is a big
difference in the length of the information in one column. However it
works pretty well - though not perfectly - provided you're not using too
many different fonts.

As Ron says, you can attach as an attachment - but then the information
doesn't print in a report.

Hi Ron,
You can add the children normally and then right click on one when in the
Children Position and choose Children's Settings
From there you can add Child Status, Relationship to Father, Relationship
to Mother for each child.

If you know the natural parents, you can add them as a second set of
parents.

If you want to record other details, you could make an event for each
child and/or for your sister.

The current Adoption Event is set up for the child.
Sentences read [HeShe] was adopted [onDate] [inPlace] by [Desc].[Sources]
[Notes] etc

If you are building web pages, you can use html code in any notes field
as long as you replace the and with « and ». The text will be a mess
in your printed reports, of course. Until Legacy enhances the format
options, any work around will be hit or miss, dependent of type face,
font size, resolution, etc. -- what looks great on your machine may look
like a jumble on mine.

RE: [LegacyUG] including a table in Notes; OR attaching a file

2006-09-05 Thread Cary
The Notes sections are really TXT rather than fully format-able word
processing, but there are two ways I can think of to get what you want.
One is to print and scan the excel table as a picture. The other - which
I have done - is to save it or any other small document as a PDF and then
use the snapshot feature in Acrobat Reader to make a picture of the part
of the document you want. The latter requires a PDF making software, I
use DocuCom PDF Direct by Zeon which is inexpensive, simple and works well
with MS Office software (don't know about how it works with other things,
but it's one of many such products).

Obviously, only a small chart will work well in reports as a picture, and
the PDF picture is limited to one page or less.

[LegacyUG] Direct Line Descendant Chart

2006-09-05 Thread Barb Krecklow
There was a request on one of my other mailing lists for information on
Legacy from someone who is trying out the standard edition. This is what
this gentleman requested.

What I want to do is to set up a descendant chart - which I was able to
do - and then delete or hide certain side names boxes to end up with
just a direct line for example

my grandfather
my father
me
one of my sons
and finally my grandson

All in one direct vertical line

I was able to do this on Generations Grande Suite just by clicking on
the box and hit delete but couldnt work out how to do it it on legacy.

Does anyone have a solution for him? I told him about this helpful group and
he said that if he decides to use Legacy as his new software, he will

Re: [LegacyUG] including a table in Notes; OR attaching a file

2006-09-05 Thread Carlos Sa

Hello, Jane

I tried HTML, but it did not work.
I thought of using HTML because there is a buttom labeled Strip
HTML. If you can strip if, then it should be possible to have it.
As for the Notes formatting, you are allowed boldface and underline
(that I can remember), and these are part of rich text files, which
normaly support tables.
That's why I was expecting to be able to past a table (and keep it).

It is interesting to note that the table is properly pasted. It only
goes away after closing and opening the record. Maybe a bug.

[LegacyUG] Research Guidance component of Legacy.

2006-09-05 Thread pph929
I've been attempting to use the Legacy Research Guidance tool.

So I'm investigating Ancestor X1.

I've used Legacy Research Guidance to (Step 1) create a timeline for him
and (Step 2) Preliminary Survey-- linked databases-- then done a search on
him on the ,e.g., LDS FamilySearch site.

And that database has some files and I want to compare some of THEIR info
with the data I've already entered into Legacy.

But I can't find a way to view any of MY data (except for the timeline
I've created for the particular individual) OR to add any notes!?!

I tried to open Legacy a 2nd time so I could have the data file available
but was unable to do so.

Can anybody tell me how to do this?

Of course I could export all my info to Family TreeMaker and use that but
that's a nuisance and not very practical -- for example, if I want to take
notes on anything I find -- well I guess I'd just have to use an
independent Word processor to have the info readily available.

So -- is there a way to switch back and forth between Research Guidance
screens and my Legacy data??

Or is it possible to open Legacy a 2nd time -- does that make sense?

Thanks as ever,

Pat

RE: [LegacyUG] Direct Line Descendant Chart

2006-09-05 Thread Cary
If you just want the direct line without spouses or detail about them go
to Tools, Relationship Calculator and select the people between whom to
list on left and right. This shows the people and can be printed. It can
be printed with pictures (if they are there) and looks nice that way as a
simple line of descent.

I told him about this helpful group

he said that if he decides to use Legacy as his new software, he will

Re: [LegacyUG] including a table in Notes; OR attaching a file

2006-09-05 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Carlos,

I doubt if it is a bug. When I first used Legacy, like yourself, I tried to
embed various files with different extension to the Notes but apart from
text files they would not stick. I think it is just the nature of the
beast.

When I now have a non text format I use Paperless Printer and convert it to
a jpg and attach it as a picture. This has the advantage of it showing up in
the Source Panel at the foot of the Assigned Sources Screen.

[LegacyUG] Printing Timelines from Legacy

2006-09-05 Thread Richard Heckman

Hi LUGgies!

I've created a new timeline with events from the history of Colonial America.

Under the CHRONOLOGY tab, I can "merge" a family member's name withmy newly createdtimeline. It's great to see how old an ancestor was at the time of various historical events. What an absolutely excellent feature! Thanks much Legacy Programmers!

My question: Can I print my timeline without being "merged" or "attached"to an individual? I would like to see my timeline printed as a "stand alone" document. Is that possible within Legacy?

With the options that are offered, it doesn't appear so. I would hate to manually retype my timeline again.

Thanks for your insight!

RE: [LegacyUG] Printing Timelines from Legacy

2006-09-05 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Richard,

They certainly look better when a life is put into context don't they?

Yes you can. Firstly go to your Legacy folder, open the Timelines folder and
then (I guess) English in which you will find your timeline. Open with
Notepad (or any text editor) and save as a .csv file - change File Type to
All Files.

You will now need a spreadsheet program, I use open Office Calc but I expect
Excel will work similarly. Open in that program. On opening I am asked for
what the separator is. Legacy uses | so just enter that in the box (no
commas and I don't about Excel at this stage) and there is the timeline
ready for editing, printing etc.

Just a clarification:
When you have more than one source for THE SAME event, you may wish to
reorder them
Works great.

Hi Denise,

If you have attached a source to the wrong event, you can copy it to
the Source Clipboard and then paste it wherever appropriate. Then
delete the wrong entry.

On the Assigned Sources window, you'll find one of the icons is Copy

Master Source and the Source Detail to the Clipboard.

You can then put the cursor next to the correct field and click the
single blue line of the Source Clipboard to assign the Source on the
Clipboard to that field.

When you have more than one source for an event, you may wish to
reorder them. That's what the black arrows are for.

Hope that clarifies,
