Re: [LegacyUG] File ID assistant and deleting duplicates

2006-10-29 Thread Cathy

Hi Beth,
The File ID assistant is there to show what file IDs you've already
used so you can enter the following number - or in your case, so you
can check that you haven't used the name before.
I use name + number (or rather type + number as I file by type -
birth, will, census ...).

That's why it has both a Select button (to use the same File ID
again) and a Select + 1 button - so you enter the next available File
ID number.

It's not so useful if you don't add a number.

If you've got into a mess, Print a File ID report so you can identify
the ones that don't match the File ID on the actual paper copy.

You can use the Edit button in the File ID Assistant to change them -
but check out the options carefully. I suspect this won't help in
your case, for, if I've understood you correctly, you've used the
same File ID name for a number of different papers. You'll need to
use the report to help you go back to each usage and change it to
what you actually want.

You might want to click the Help button on the File ID Assistant
screen to learn more.

RE: [LegacyUG] Corrupted GEDCOMs - UTF-8 format

2006-10-29 Thread Peter Haughton
This is too restrictive a response.
There is no problem using Wordpad under normal circumstances
when the ANSI character set is used which is the default.
The problem ONLY arises when the UTF-8 character set is
deliberately chosen to produce the GEDCOM file, and that
GEDCOM file with the UTF-8 character set is opened AND
SAVED in either Wordpad OR Word.

This will NOT affect MOST users of GEDCOM files. Ignore it!

RE: [LegacyUG] Descendent Narrative table of contents

2006-10-29 Thread Peter Haughton
Jeff, if you can bear to screen read, just create PDFs.
But I agree that at the beginning you need to have
paper copies if only of sections of reports to view
the differences caused by different selections. I find
that printing just the Index of a Descendant Chart,
Book or Narrative is adequate now when checking
a report--it allows you to quickly move to the
onscreen page number without scrolling to find the
things you know you need to check.

You MUST use Report Setting files with descriptive
indicator names so you can swap back and forth
between trials, AND so you don't have remember
particular settings, AND so you don't have to retype
headings and titles and the like. See bottom right of
every report options window.

Re: [LegacyUG] Copying events (e.g., between spouses)

2006-10-29 Thread Cathy
You'd find it quicker to use the Event clipboard to copy and paste.
That way, the source is taken as well so you don't then need to
source the copied event. (You do put a source don't you :-))

Re: [LegacyUG] Search in events note field for surname

2006-10-29 Thread Cathy

Hi Beth,
It's worth taking a bit of time to get familiar with the Search -
it's not as hard as it first appears.

Search > Detailed Search Tab

You only need one condition for this search so you just fill in the
Primary Condition boxes

You're looking for information entered on the Individual information screen so
Look for whom? Individual

You're looking for something you put in Event Notes.

Where to look? Event-Notes

The name you are looking for could be anywhere in the Note so

How to look? Contains

You're looking for a name eg Joe Bloggs

What to look for? Joe Bloggs

You are wanting to search your entire file and end up with a list of
just the relevant people for this search so

Clear list before this search

Click Create List

I only use Find First, if I've put in a complicated search with
several conditions and want to check I'm finding what I think I am.

I think the tense of "had a relationship" was supplied by you in the

We do need some more control over tense in some situations as

Any suggestions?

You don't need to uninstall Wordpad. This issue will only cause you a
problem if you willingly choose to use the program Wordpad to open up
a GEDCOM file. The workaround is to open GEDCOMs in Notepad or a word

Pat, I don't think you can do a txt or rtf file as such for the ToDo List
but you can make a pdf or comma delimited. On the ToDo page click Print and
the options are at the bottom.

You can open a comma delimited file in Notepad or WordPad but they are
diffidult to read. They are best opened in OpenOffice or Excel.

When I clicked on Options, and then on Help from the ToDo List, I didn't
see directions for exporting the entire ToDo list to a text and/or .rtf
file.

And on the family pae, when I clicked on help and typed it "export" I
didn't see either the To-Do List OR the Sources List listed.

Also didn't see the options on either of the report menus.

Can you tell me where to find the instructions for exporting either/both to
a text or .rtf file?

What SHOULD I be looking under/for in the index?

Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] More of the "ghost" parents

The way to find them is to go to the Marr List, choose
either the husband or wife column. You will see, at
the top, all marriages with a "ghost" spouse. Many of
they may be valid, but any with both spouses with no
names for either PROBABLY need fixing, at least
looking at. You can also search for all couples with
blank names on both sides of a marriage.

Cathy and Jeff,

I've looked at the Help Files and I agree we should add some instructions
on entering date ranges. I have submitted a bug report on this issue,
requesting that guidance on entering date ranges be added to the Help
file.

Jeff,
The Legacy Help section doesn't explain how to enter ranges, which
leaves you guessing, like you've found. Read about "Dates: Entering"
and "Date" then read about unrecognizable dates, and how to do some
customizing to be alerted, or not be.

1. Instead of 1970s, it wants you to use the range 1970-1979. But if
you leave it at 1970s, it can sort it as if it were 1970.

2. It does not recognize non-standard ranges. You can use 1944-1954 if
you want to make the program happy, then enter a note about the 1954
iffiness. I use my non-standard dates but write it in how I want it to
print out (i.e. "1944 to about 1954").

3. I like to estimate birth dates for people so that if they show up
(online or in my names list) as the result of a search, they can
easily be eliminated if the birth date is not within a certain range.
This then also helps to keep children sorted in the correct order. I
use the prefix Est. to indicate it is an estimated date.

4. Not sure what the error would be, but if you click on the "Exclude
from Potential Problems" button on a person's individual view, you are
given a list of things to exclude. If your event is running into one
of those types of errors, then select that particular problem to end
the continued reporting of that error.

Hope these ideas help.

2) Legacy did not like an event with date entered as "1944 - abt 1954"

Re: [LegacyUG] Copying events (e.g., between spouses)

2006-10-29 Thread Kyle MacLea

Dear Ronald and Patricia,

Thanks for the suggestions with Event copying between spouses. I
agree that for the most part, it's fine to have the husband's info
reflect the wife's. I usually would assume residences the same unless
noted otherwise, and occupations different unless noted. Still, I
recently decided to go ahead and try to add residences where
appropriate to both members of a couple, and relevant
children/parents/etc also, because I like to be able to see where
people were and were doing when I look at each individual. Just a
personal preference thing!

As for the copying procedure, the one Ron uses is the one I generally
use too. Except, I have a bunch that I entered before I got to this
point, and copying them individually (many different directory
residence locations, for instance) is a bit of a pain. I had hoped
that Legacy might make it easier for you. For instance, to hold down
control or shift and copy several events using the Copy button, and
then Paste these several with the Paste button. I would like to see
that in a future version, but I might be a minority among users.

Thanks again!

Kyle

enter it under the wife's name only if there was a difference. E.g., if he
moved to San Francisco in 1935 and she stayed East with the children till
1938.
Or, if he was an architect and she was too I'd enter that in both, since I'd
assume an occupation was HIS occupation and that her occupation was HERS.
If you can't tell certain events are individual or family I'd make it clear
in the Events Description.
This method is probably not pleasing to a lot of people, but personally I
don't have a problem with it.

Re: [LegacyUG] exportinf todo list

2006-10-29 Thread Patricia Hickin
When I clicked on Options, and then on Help from the ToDo List, I didn't see
directions for exporting the entire ToDo list to a text and/or .rtf file.

And on the family pae, when I clicked on help and typed it "export" I didn't
see either the To-Do List OR the Sources List listed.

Also didn't see the options on either of the report menus.

Can you tell me where to find the instructions for exporting either/both to
a text or .rtf file?

What SHOULD I be looking under/for in the index?

Thanks!

Jeff,

"Just about any report" can be exported to text or html. The text reports
can be opened in a word processor but wouldn't have the formatting that
shows otherwise.

Book reports can all be exported to rtf.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Thank you.

I would make a suggestion that the capability to export "just about any
report" into a word processor would be a good thing for Legacy to have.
That way any report can be spruced up as needed.

[LegacyUG] Alastair's Word Macro

2006-10-29 Thread Jan Roberts
Just want to publicly thank Alastair for the trouble he has gone to improve
the macro I created to clean up images and captions in rtf reports.

Alastair posted his macro to the list, but when I tried to add it to my
macro list I got into all sorts of bother. An off-list appeal to Alastair
for help has seen numerous emails winging across the globe through
cyberspace. Once I got it working I asked if another modification was
possible – and it was in my inbox this morning!

Thank you Alastair.

Cheers,

Jan

Re: [LegacyUG] Corrupted GEDCOMs - UTF-8 format

2006-10-29 Thread Patricia Hickin
I've got Notepad and Wordpad -- rarely use either -- except Notepad via

Is there any reason I cannot/shouldn't uninstall Wordpad -- to be sure I
avoid the problems you're talking about here?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Corrupted GEDCOMs - UTF-8 format

I was working this week with a user who reported that when he generated a
GEDCOM using the UTF-8 character set option instead of ANSI the output file
was corrupted. It contained random characters which rendered the file
unusable by other applications for import. These characters sometimes were
at the beginning of the line, sometimes embedded within the line where a
space would be or, in a few cases, even replaced characters in the TAG (the
part of a GEDCOM line that tells the importing software what the line
means).

I initially could not duplicate the problem, nor, when he sent me snippets
of the affected parts of his GEDCOM, see any errors. I eventually looked
at his snippets in a variety of text editors and Word Processor programs
and was able to see there were "bad" characters visible in Wordpad but not
Notepad nor most of the Word Processors.

After I reported my difficulty in even viewing the "bad" characters in the
snippets he sent me I received the following reply:

"The comments you made in your email regarding viewing the output by
various means led to me doing some further investigation. You will
probably be pleased to know that I no longer think it is a Legacy problem!

By a little bit of trial and error I believe I have isolated the problem
to Wordpad; the editor I was using. It appears that Wordpad is misreading
the UFT-8 GEDCOM file and substituting random characters on the initial
loading of the file. If you then have Wordpad save this file it saves the
characters that it has misread. I have tried loading and saving the GEDCOM
in various text editors and I am unable to reproduce the problem.

I then did a little bit of further research on the internet and I found
various references by people who have encountered a similar problem with
Wordpad (and MSWord) - and some of the info is fairly old. I am amazed
that there has not been more people experiencing this same problem and I
am even more amazed that Microsoft have not been made aware of this
problem and for them not to have fixed it. From my reading Wordpad,
unknown to the user, converts the text to UFT-16. As I have limited
knowledge of this subject I will avoid using Wordpad in future.

This is something that everyone, everywhere should be made aware of and
you folk should keep this in mind when anyone else advises you of some
text editing problem.

Thanks for your help and I am pleased for you that it apparently is not a
Legacy problem."

I was granted permission to relay this information to the Legacy Users
Group as a caution to anyone who want to view their GEDCOM's produced by
Legacy, or any other program, to be wary of this issue if you open the
GEDCOM in Wordpad.

[LegacyUG] XoftSpy - Legacy Problems

2006-10-29 Thread Carolyn Seaman

Dale,

I had not considered Legacy to be the source of all my recent
frustrations! Thank you for pointing out the possible conflict
between XoftSpy and Legacy .

About October 15, I began to have problems with opening Legacy. On
the advice of Geoff at Millennia I reinstalled Legacy, did a full
download of the program. However, that has not really solved the
problem. I still must run the setup program each time I want to open
my family files.

Along about the same time, I began getting 14 Severe Risk Power Spy
alerts from XoftSpy. I'm another of these paranoid people who also
runs Norton, Ad-Aware, and WindowsDefender along with XoftSpy. None
of these others found any problem at all. The thought of there being
any connection between these two events completely eluded me.

My son arrived to day with an "early Christmas present" of a mobile
storage device to make a copy of my hard drive and then to begin the
process of reinstalling XPPro and all my programs.

At this point, I have written to ParetoLogic about the conflicts and
will gladly wait for them to solve the problem before I go through
the hassle of a reinstallation.

Thank you for bringing your problem to the Legacy Users group.

Carolyn

[LegacyUG] Corrupted GEDCOMs - UTF-8 format

2006-10-29 Thread Brian/Support
I was working this week with a user who reported that when he generated
a GEDCOM using the UTF-8 character set option instead of ANSI the output
file was corrupted. It contained random characters which rendered the
file unusable by other applications for import. These characters
sometimes were at the beginning of the line, sometimes embedded within
the line where a space would be or, in a few cases, even replaced
characters in the TAG (the part of a GEDCOM line that tells the
importing software what the line means).

I initially could not duplicate the problem, nor, when he sent me
snippets of the affected parts of his GEDCOM, see any errors. I
eventually looked at his snippets in a variety of text editors and Word
Processor programs and was able to see there were "bad" characters
visible in Wordpad but not Notepad nor most of the Word Processors.

After I reported my difficulty in even viewing the "bad" characters in
the snippets he sent me I received the following reply:

"The comments you made in your email regarding viewing the output by
various means led to me doing some further investigation. You will
probably be pleased to know that I no longer think it is a Legacy problem!

By a little bit of trial and error I believe I have isolated the problem
to Wordpad; the editor I was using. It appears that Wordpad is
misreading the UFT-8 GEDCOM file and substituting random characters on
the initial loading of the file. If you then have Wordpad save this file
it saves the characters that it has misread. I have tried loading and
saving the GEDCOM in various text editors and I am unable to reproduce
the problem.

Thanks for your help and I am pleased for you that it apparently is not
a Legacy problem."

I was granted permission to relay this information to the Legacy Users
Group as a caution to anyone who want to view their GEDCOM's produced by
Legacy, or any other program, to be wary of this issue if you open the
GEDCOM in Wordpad.

Re: [LegacyUG] Spybot - Spyware

2006-10-29 Thread malkajef
I agree that Spybot is excellent and I use it too. But alone, it is not
sufficient as it misses some spyware. Using "Spybot" and also Lavasoft's
"Ad-Aware SE personal" provides excellent protection.

You also need a good firewall (I use Zone Alarm which is also free) and a
virus checker, of which there are many.

Of course, for all of these it is essential (!) to keep them updated so they
can find the latest threats. As has been mentioned, some software touted as
spyware protection are actually disguised spyware themselves. So be careful
and stick to the known ad true that I listed above.

This is interesting. I noticed about a month ago when I scan my computer

spyware_trak_msnsypmonitor (high risk). When I remove it I cannot open
Legacy 6, it has to be reinstalled. I have to leave this spyware on my

I too would like to know how this can be removed from my machine and still

I am wondering is anyone else is having the same issue with Legacy and
Spyware. My Spyware software (XoftSpy) recently discovered a program
called

Power Spy (which is labeled a Severe Risk Keylogger program). The
description given by my Spyware program is "Power Spy is a commercial
keylogger. It captures all keystrokes and also takes screenshots in order
to

spy on the user."

When I removed it I eventually discovered that my Legacy 6.0 Program
stopped

working as it would crash on startup and close. I had to reinstall Legacy
to make it work again. The next Spyware scan detected Power Spy again and
that's when I discovered it was being installed when Legacy 6.0 is

Why is Legacy installing Spyware and how can I remove it and still keep

Thanks for your help.

Jeff, I think they both include everything, but I've generally
been using Descendant Narrative because I find people I
send it to can easily trace down their families, whereas
they get lost in the Book. The Narrative is also a lot shorter
and less repetitive than the Book.

I also usually send a Descendant Chart without boxes but
with generation lines which makes it easier for readers to
find their way around--then they can go back to the longer
Narrative version.

I am trying to create a print or pdf version that would have

Rob,

Good point. The sentence creation routine needs to take into account both
the "Not Married" status and "Living" status so that the tense will read
correctly. The programmers should be able to fix this one if they are

Also note that if you merge pieces of a database that the relationships are
not all corrected automatically. Whenever you wish the relationship labels

It is possible that you added the un-related individual to some family which
gave him the relationship and then detached him. Click "Tools" then "Set
Relationships..." where you will see the "Clear Relationships" button. Try
that and then see if your un-related person still shows a relationship.
Afterward you will probably want to use the "Set Relationships" button again
to compute the relationship labels for your "Starting Person".

Hi, I have a problem with the way in (e.g.) a descendants report a
relation between 2 persons with status Unmarried is printed in the
report.
Normally a mariage is an event and it translates into the past tence,
saying something like '.married."

But when two persons 'only' have a relation (so living together, not
being married) this also translates to: "Had a relationship'. I get
complaints of the family that they still have a relation and would
like that to be mentioned correctly as ".have a relationship...'

Any suggestions?

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Spyware

2006-10-29 Thread Sherry/Support
Dale,

Legacy does *not* contain spyware. It's one of the overly aggressive ones
that we've had a problem with, reporting that Legacy contained spyware. I
don't know which specific files it's identifying and removing. Some spyware
programs use the same dll and ocx files that Legacy uses, but that doesn't
mean *those* files are spyware.

I would suggest that you contact XoftSpy and explain to them that their
identification and removal of Power Spy is disabling a legitimate program
and ask that they download Legacy and test it. When we've had users report
this to the support people for their spyware scanner program, the next
update generally has fixed the problem so Legacy will run fine.

It *may* be the cia*.* files, which have been associated with spyware
before. They're simply the "button files" that we use for the icons and
toolbars in Legacy.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy Spyware

I am wondering is anyone else is having the same issue with Legacy and
Spyware. My Spyware software (XoftSpy) recently discovered a program called
Power Spy (which is labeled a Severe Risk Keylogger program). The
description given by my Spyware program is "Power Spy is a commercial
keylogger. It captures all keystrokes and also takes screenshots in order to
spy on the user."

When I removed it I eventually discovered that my Legacy 6.0 Program stopped
working as it would crash on startup and close. I had to reinstall Legacy
to make it work again. The next Spyware scan detected Power Spy again and
that's when I discovered it was being installed when Legacy 6.0 is
installed.

Why is Legacy installing Spyware and how can I remove it and still keep
Legacy operating?

Thanks for your help.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Spyware

2006-10-29 Thread Ron Taylor

Dale,

I have also used XoftSpy on one of my computers and began to experience many
problems. A brief search on the internet turned up many comments that the
XoftSpy program may itself be spyware. I have never had any spyware
associated with Legacy and have used it for years. It would be helpful if
XoftSpy might be scrutinized thoroughly to determine if it is at fault.

RE: [LegacyUG] exportinf todo list

2006-10-29 Thread Sherry/Support

RE: [LegacyUG] Descendent Narrative table of contents

2006-10-29 Thread Peter Haughton
Jeff, I think they both include everything, but I've generally
been using Descendant Narrative because I find people I
send it to can easily trace down their families, whereas
they get lost in the Book. The Narrative is also a lot shorter
and less repetitive than the Book.

I also usually send a Descendant Chart without boxes but
with generation lines which makes it easier for readers to
find their way around--then they can go back to the longer
Narrative version.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendent Narrative table of contents

2006-10-29 Thread malkajef

Thanks Ron, but it must be me because I still do not see that option.

In that Options tab screen, in the section of Table of contents, I do have
selected: Generate Table of Contents, Bold, and use Leaders. Generations is
set at 10, but when the report is generated the Table of Contents that is
produced on page 3 still does not include within it

generation 1... page #
generation 2 .. page #
 etc.
like it used to. I just cannot find how to restore that feature which I
liked because you could immediately see within the TOC how many generations
were included in that report.

A Descendant Book by default has Generation subtitles
in the Contents if you choose the Contents option.
The nature of a Descendant Book report is across the
generations, so they can be separated.

A Descendant Narrative doesn't have such an option
because it is travelling down the tree primarily, and
then across secondarily, the opposite of the Book
report. Consequently, the generations are not
separated, but "families" are.

Re: [LegacyUG] Copying events (e.g., between spouses)

2006-10-29 Thread Patricia Hickin
Personally, I just put all joint things under the husband's name and would
enter it under the wife's name only if there was a difference. E.g., if he
moved to San Francisco in 1935 and she stayed East with the children till

Kyle,

I cannot think of a way to do what you suggest. The method I would use
would be to go to the event click edit and copy it to the source clipboard
using the icon then go to his spouse and and paste again using the icon.
This way all the details and sources are copied. However, this will need
to be done for each event. I tend to copy things like this to all persons
at the time of entering.

Just I though I use the marriage events for a couple's residence and not
the individual events - a matter of choice though.

Dear User Group:

New here, and despite a search of the archives, failed to turn up an
answer. So, I'll plunge in and risk asking something previously
asked!

So, I have a person in my family file. I have meticulously filled in
a bunch of addresses in city directories as "Residence" events for
that person. Now, I wish to apply them all to that person's spouse.
Is there an EASY way to do this?

I realize I can copy the events individually, but it would be really
handy to be able to, for example, copy all of the Residence events to
another person. Or to select a few different events, and copy them
all at once. This would be handy for a spouse, but also for children
before they grow up and move out, or other family members living
together, etc.

Any suggestions? My apologies if this has been asked recently.

I suspect that this may be a spin off from the relationship problem. I have
recently found I've got a new relative to my 6th ggrandfather!

I just added an unrelated individual to my database (I haven't proved how
he fits into my family yet so I have him detached). However, above his
name he shows as my 3rd great grand uncle and he isn't attached to me in
anyway! He is floating around in my database all by himself (he is the
only one in his tree. I don't have a spouse for him nor children).
