Have you tried deleting the pictures that are the problem and reloading them
with a new name? Being that this is a problem with just a few pictures

sectors
on your drive. To solve this problem, run disk check (dskchk) with the f
option, this will convert the crosslinked sectors to files which can then be
deleted. This is a function of the computers operating system, it is not a
Legacy function.

Re: [LegacyUG] Which files do I back up?

2006-11-28 Thread ronald ferguson
Sorry about that June, but like I said I do not remember creating it. I must
admit it is the sort of thing I'm likely to to if I get totally cheesed off
with the way things are working (or not). I agree with Cathy about saving
the colour schemes btw, as these can be a real pain to put back - must think
about putting these in the Settings folder as well. Come to think of it
might not be a bad idea if Legacy did have such a default folder. [Note to
Legacy I'd rather have the pedigree web page coding sorted first ;-) ]

Yes Ron, that is what prompted my question to you because it definitely is
not there between the Home and Picture folders, or anywhere else and I
think it is a really handy one to have.

Hi Cathy,

I'm not going to disagree with you but I have absolutely no recollection
of ever having created it! I've assumed it was there by default since I
spotted it (or perhaps respotted it) a while back which was when I got 2
different versions of my web settings mixed up. Must say that that made
life interesting for a while ;-)

Hi Ron,
Settings isn't a default folder - unless it's very recently been
introduced. It's one you've chosen to create to save Report Settings etc.

I also have created a folder but mine is called Report Options ;-)

When you are saving report or web page options, like in all save
dialogues, you have the choice of where you save them. It's a good idea
to create a special folder so that they are easily backed up. Also give
the files a useful name so it's easy to choose which one to load.

I have Karen's Replicator set up to save my .usr files (along with bits
and pieces from other programs) to my Backup folder - which I then backup
to my external hard drive and periodically cut to CD. Like all settings,
the .usr files can be recreated but it takes time going through Options
Customise etc.

Other settings you might want to backup are Colour Schemes you've
created.

Cheers,
Cathy

June, assuming that you used the Legacy default installation, it is in
C:\Legacy and comes after the Legacy Home and Pictures folders. The usr
files which you see are those generated by Legacy (personally I don't
bother to back them up as Legacy will recreate them when reinstalled)
and the folder is at the top before you get to them

Hi Lloyd,
Like Ron, I'm not quite clear what you were asking originally. You use
file at times when I think you mean folder - but I'm not sure.

Legacy has a Picture folder under the Program folder as it's a good idea
to keep all the pictures you attach to Legacy together. Whether you keep
them in the folder Legacy provides or elsewhere is up to you. If you
don't put the photos you are attaching together in a folder or set of
folders, then the only way you have to collect them is the multimedia
backup in Legacy. This creates a very large file if you have attached lots
of photos, especially if you haven't thought about resolution. Unless you
understand unzipping, you also have problems when you come to unzip this
file on another computer as it will recreate all the folders from the
originating computer.

I keep my Legacy pictures in subfolders in a folder called Legacy pictures
in My Pictures. I've moved My Pictures so the path is C:\My
Pictures\Legacy Pictures\Harris ...
This means that the path is the same on both my laptop and my desktop. I
like to keep all my Pics together.

Re: [LegacyUG] Norwegian birth place question

2006-11-28 Thread Dora Smith
I haven't seen any of this, and both my yahoo and roadrunner addresses go
bonkers. Perhaps hte rest of the discussion was in my spam folder.

So I don't know what the question nor the suggestions exactly were.

I just want to point out that both Google Earth (which is free, and requires
access to the Internet to run), and Encarta's atlas, can find pretty much
any place in teh world. Encarta found pretty much all of my little
villages in France, and gave suggestions if I was a bit vague or a little
off. Google EArth has trouble finding places you don't have exactly right
in your format, and could not find cities in Ireland because it has Ireland
as UK, and it is no longer PC to call Ireland Ireland.

For France, a web site called Francogene has the vagueness of many of the
place names given on the 17th century documents worked out.

I got Legacy's new mapping program but have not yet installed nor used it.
By the time they finally got it out, I had my mapping project all done.

Re: [LegacyUG] couple married twice

2006-11-28 Thread Brian/Support
I just tried to duplicate the relationship calculator error. I did not
however add a second made up marriage since Asa has 2 marriages already.
Do you mean I should have made a third marriage?

When I tested in both 5 and six I did not see Rev. Nathan Brown
disappear when 16 (his son Lorenzo) was on the left or the right.

16 Lorenzo - 23 Rev. Nathan R - 1 Asa Clark Brown was on the left and
98 Loraine Chandler - 93 David Clark - 1 Asa Clark Brown was on the
right. They were reported as half-1st cousins. That should be correct
since Rev. Nathan Brown and David Clark Brown are half-brothers.

Using names from a real family file is a risk because the researcher

Example, the relationship problem in Legacy 4, 5 and 6 is easily
demonstrated by adding a made-up second marriage for Asa Brown and viewing
the relationship chart for descendants #16 and #98. One generation (Rev.
Nathan Brown) disappears when #16 is on the left side.

I took my own suggestion and added a third marriage for Asa Clark Brown.
I then found that the error you describe does occur, if that dummy
marriage is sorted between the two real marriages or is the first of
Asa's Marriages. When the marriage is the first David Clark Brown will
disappear. Now I know how to write a bug report I will submit one so
this can be addressed, at least in Version 6.0.

My hard drive crashed yesterday so am
spending my time reinstalling my software.

1. I installed Legacy 6.0 and entered my deluxe Customer Number.
2. When I click on Download and
Install Now, I receive this message: Update
Process Failed - Could not update Legacy. If
this problem continues you can download the
update from our web site at http://LegacyFamilyTree.com.;
3. I am able to connect to Legacy by
clicking on Suggest a new feature.

4. I have not had a problem before with updates.
5. I have rebooted my computer.

Any suggestions, *other than* to (1)
manually download the update and then to (2) manually install the update?

Thank you.

Re: [LegacyUG] option for Cremation - how long ago?

2006-11-28 Thread Dora Smith
Not to knock peoples' decisions to use a special cremation tag, but if one
wants to avoid special tags in order to preserve portability to other
programs, it might be better to put the information in the burial field.

Legacy is seriously getting there, but there is still information that
Legacy does not put in its reports that PAF Companion does, so people still
have to be able to export their data. Nonstandard tags means that your
database has information in places where other programs can't import it.

After all, what matters is not if the person was cremated but if the remains
are in a grave such that future generations can find the gravestone and the
cemetery records. My mother and father were both cremated, and then
buried, in a cemetery, with gravestones.

So if someone's remains were never located in a grave, you can put in the
burial place field; Cremated, no grave. If they were cremated and the
ashes scattered, you could put, Ashes scattered in Lake Travis, Texas, or,
Aunt Minnie kept the ashes, for the burial location. Obviously they were
cremated if they ended up as ashes. And people know that to follow the
trail of post-death information they would probably want to follow up with
Aunt Minnie.

It is actually a good point. It hadn't occurred to me to put anythign in
the burial field of people whose ashes got thrown in the sea or grace a
family member's livingroom mantle, and can you see future generations trying
to find where the people are buried!

Since my parents have a grave, their burial field reads, Nashotah House
Seminary, Wisconsin. Don't know if descendants will want to travel tehre
or will extract much useful info about them from the seminary staff, not
even about my father's days at the seminary; I couldn't even get a yearbook
photo - but they really won't need to know that the bodies had to be
cremated for transport and then for storage until teh ground thawed to allow
burial.

If dedication is your faith's version of baptism, you can put that
information in that field and put the explanation in the notes, if you
want - or put nothing, if you really don't want to consider it a baptism.
For portability I'd use the general notes, not the baptism notes!

Dora Smith

Re: [LegacyUG] Norwegian birth place question

2006-11-28 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Create an Event called NorwayBirth etc. and then don't
print the original birth field in the reports.
A real band aid but I will be thinking about this more
later. Also, just to cause problems, what is the
phrasing in the Norwegian language version? This is
where it needs to be fixed first?
That is why I suggested an alternate to the default
phrases for BMD. Once created, each of us can create
as many sentence clumps as needed. And the issue goes
away.
Thanks for your support.

You make some interesting suggestions. I'd suspect

What you propose is very similar to what TMG already
 offers. (And if I
recall correctly, Legacy v5 was to have a witness
feature similar to TMG, but we
never saw that, either.) I'd agree with you that
 perhaps Legacy will
incorporate some feature that will allow us to track

 almost impossible to do.

Given the current constraints of Legacy, do you
 have a solution?

Re: [LegacyUG] Foster children

2006-11-28 Thread Dora Smith
I haven't done much data entry in Legacy, since I prefer to use PAF for
that, but I did do some relatively data cleanup with Legacy, and it
specifically involved a couple of cases where I accidentally had people with
multiple parents or intended to end up with multiple parents after merging
17th century emigrants with common identities and assortments of theoretical
parents - I had several cases where it made sense to do that. I don't
remember specifically how to do it but it was intuitive to someone used to
PAF and not at all hard.

After you enter children, you can change the nature of their relationship
with their parents. Usually you either get the menu of things to edit for a
specific person and pick edit parent links, or right click on the person and
choose edit parent links.

I don't know if foster children is specifically an option, but adopted
children certainly is, and you can always explain further in the notes. If
these are foster children who you are listing as members of the family, they
weren't in and out foster children; they must have been raised by this
couple, which makes them in the same sort of relationship as adopted
children.

Though I would explain in the notes. That would help explain, for
instance, if you later add the biological parents for the children! If
they weren't adopted, they got their birth certificates and information
about their biological parents when tehy came of age, if they did not
already know who they were. I know because my mother in law was raised by
foster parents after being given up for adoption at birth. If she ever
gives me information about them (which she really should, since that is who
raised her), then I will enter her as a foster child of those parents.

list the foster sons names but don't know how to put that they are foster
sons and put that they had no children of their own. Do I do this in the
research notes or what? I am kinda new at this genealogy. Thanks for all
your help. I enjoy reading the suggestions that are provided on the list.

RE: [LegacyUG] Foster children

2006-11-28 Thread ronald ferguson
Laura, In the Family View bring the child into the frame and click on the
Parents Icon (2 people next to the house) and you will be taken to a screen
that has Realtionship to Father and Relationship to Mother at the bottom.
Click on the blue arrows at the end of the adjacent boxes and another screen
opens giving some options. Foster Child is not one of them so use the Add
Button to added it to the list and then click Select.

Today's Legacy tip is about creating a customized Relationship Report. The
standard Relationship Report only lists the name of the person and their
relationship to the starting person. To customize it, follow the steps as
outlined in the article. Visit our blog at http://www.legacynews.typepad.com

Legacy has an add-on in Tree Draw. I, as one person,
do not want a charting progam added into the

There is not an eay answer to this. I only have one relative for whom this
specific circumstance applies and he was a war casualty who died in the
English Channel. As such the exact cause of death is not known and as I do
not know the ship he was on only the sea in which he died. His body was
never recovered. Thus the entry can only be Cause: War Casualty. Place:
The English Channel.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy tip: How to create a relationship report with more detail

2006-11-28 Thread Clarence Mundt
Hi;
I take a little exception to this report.

After you set up the relationships
1.. In the Family View, navigate to yourself, or the person to whom you want
to calculate all the relationships.
2.. Click on the Tools menu, then click Set Relationships.
Then you want to:

1.. Click on the Search eyeglass button in the main toolbar.
  2.. Click on Detailed Search
  3.. Look for Individual ... Where .. Relationship ... How .. Equal To ...
What .. Related
4.. Click on the Print button at the bottom.
5.. The Row 1 tab displays the fields that will print on the report. The
Optional Fields at the bottom are customizable. Just click on the Customize
button and select the Relationships field.
6.. Also select the Birth Date and Death Date fields.

I have 16,000 in my file but this only creates a report of some 4,452 people...
Now if I could just cut in down a bit more and drop the wife of 3rd or 4th
cousins of the list... lol

The use of the name list will do all 16,000 people..

Hope this helps a little bit more

I now know what it is. It is the accent used in
French, but why it is in the characters without an
underlying vowel, I have no clue. It is the character
under the tilde on my laptop, so you might be able to
search for it, now that we can make oneon purpose.
When does it appear in the print? Print one page, and
look at the preview, to check if it is there, or what
doesn't match from preview to print. The wrong stuff
should be in the preview, as well as the hardcopy.
It sounds like a (turning the computer off wrong/bad)
problem. I've done it in the past.Let me know eithe

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy tip: How to create a relationship report with more detail

2006-11-28 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
A good idea, which I have been using is:
I have tagged with #9 all direct line (my name and
choice) ancestors for my grandchildren, some inlaws
and remove ancestors born before 1500. About 25000
names in the main file, and 410 'direct lines' people.
They are the people most often searched for.
Create using the Focus list what ever core group you
wish to work with on a continuing basis, and give them
one of the 9 Tags.

 Hi;
I take a little exception to this report.

After you set up the relationships
1.. In the Family View, navigate to yourself, or
the person to whom you want to calculate all the
 relationships.
2.. Click on the Tools menu, then click Set
 Relationships.
 Then you want to:

1.. Click on the Search eyeglass button in the
 main toolbar.
   2.. Click on Detailed Search
3.. Look for Individual ... Where .. Relationship
 ... How .. Equal To ... What .. Related
4.. Click on the Print button at the bottom.
5.. The Row 1 tab displays the fields that will
print on the report. The Optional Fields at the
bottom are customizable. Just click on the Customize
button and select the Relationships field.
6.. Also select the Birth Date and Death Date
 fields.

I have 16,000 in my file but this only creates a
 report of some 4,452 people...
Now if I could just cut in down a bit more and drop
the wife of 3rd or 4th cousins of the list... lol

The use of the name list will do all 16,000
 people..

Hope this helps a little bit more

I decided to just download version 6.0.0.110.
At this URL to download Legacy 6.0
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadStep2.asp,
I clicked on Click Here to Download Full Setup. I am taken to this URL
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Download/Legacy6/sng1/Legacy6Setup.exe,
and receive a 404 Error message (The page cannot be found).
 Help and thanks.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy tip: How to create a relationship report with more detail

2006-11-28 Thread Clarence Mundt
Hi Richard;
I do that also to focus groups on the direct line I also use tag #9 for
such
But sometimes it would be nice to see all the first or second cousins in a
list
The search 'related' catches the wife of 5th cousin 8 times removed that
is a bit much!
But that might be just what you are looking for...

I just checked both Version3 4 and 5. There is no indication in either

I have just created this customized report but have noticed that there are
asteriks (*) next to several relationships. I cannot figure out what this
represents... Does anyone know.

Thanks
