Re: [LegacyUG] Mapping Gedcom Tags to Legacy

2006-12-19 Thread Stuart Gregory

Cathy,

Thank you for your quick reply. My OP clearly sought assistance with
exporting to Gedcom V5.5, not importing. Since your reply, I have
checked again the tags available for export using the Legacy setting
for V5.5. None of these tags, and these are only examples of many,
are not included In the V5.5 list.

During this check I found that the NATU tag was available for export
(but, presumably, according to Legacy, not a valid V5.5 tag), but not
the other three. I am well aware that Legacy has disappointed a number
of users by not having a witness feature, but the ASSO tag can be used
for other functions.

Back to the NATU tag. Although I can see it as a tag for export, I
cannot find where I can input the data relevant to this tag. I can see
no way of creating an event and associating that event with a specific
Gedcom tag as you suggest. If I could do this, a major part of my
problem would be solved.

As for the remaining two tags, as part of my example, I cannot find
these tags to export, let alone know of an event associated with these
tags. I would be very pleased if you could explain how I can make
them.

Thanks again for your assistance.

You can make them during the Gedcom import.
Start the import and then click Customise.
On the Items to Import screen that comes up - read the Help page

This tells you how to use:
Map to a Recognised Tag button
and
Create an Event for this Tag button

Now I've never done this as I've never received a complicated Gedcom

Sorry Stuart,

You'll have to ask someone else.
I know very little about Gedcom and currently little interest in them.

I assumed since you had various tags, you had the Gedcom.
If you are trying to make a Gedcom, I have no idea.
I don't quite understand making a Gedcom with information you haven't entered.
I'd enter some and see what happened when exporting a Gedcom if
having the information included in a Gedcom was important to me. If
it wasn't included, I'd enter it differently.

I was talking about what you do when you're importing a Gedcom with
these or other unknown tags.

[LegacyUG] Timelines

2006-12-19 Thread Heather Stovold

I've just started playing with the prepared Timelines

Is there anyplace to go find new ones that people have compiled?

Also - I noticed the Canadian Census one that comes with it doesn't have all
the census's. I'm showing the timeline for my ancestor (limit to his
lifetime...) Be was born 1825, died 1892 And the first census listed
is 1871. But I have notes from the 1861 census, and It seems to me there
was a 1851 and maybe an 1841 census too?

[LegacyUG] How do you personally put in information that you think is incorrect....

2006-12-19 Thread Heather Stovold

My father and I have been working on one of our Ancestors for 40 years now
(he is our brick wall.)

I recently discovered that one of the sources we had used for some
information probably does not pertain to this ancestor after all. My father
had found our ancestor living in a Mental Assylum in the Canadian 1881
Census, under the name of McCasline (our name is McCaslin...). From that
information and further research, we had an exact death date and place (from
the assylum), a calculated birthdate (a few years off our other calculated
birthdate), and some other information. The rest of the family had not been
found on the census.

I have since discovered that ancestor AND most of the Family living in the
same county as they did in 1871 - but under McCastin (the t didn't match
the l in Soundex, but of course looks very similar!) The information
matches the information from the other census's.

So either the McCasline was the wrong person - or he was sometimes at the
assylum, and sometimes at home - and got counted twice. (so obviously I
need to do more research)

So now the question.
I do have what I've found commented in the notes.
I don't want to just remove the information from the files but I don't
want to get confused either, thinking I have the definate information when
it is now put under a great amount of doubt. And even if I do disprove
the information, I don't want to just remove it either, as others might make
the same mistake?

So - how do you put disproved or doubtful information (that others might
find and think is right) into Legacy in such a way that it is totally clear
it is disproved or doubtful?

I do realize there isn't 1 right way - but I'd like to hear what people
would suggest!

Thanks!

[LegacyUG] RTF reports in OpenOffice - Table of Contents, Indexes, and Graphics

2006-12-19 Thread Dan Bateham

Hi Listers,

I'm trying to create reports in RTF format and use OpenOffice 2.1 in order
to do some editing before printing.

First I'm new at using OpenOffice for doing Legacy reports as usually I
create the PDF file format (which is quick and simple for sharing with
others). However, I need to do some editing of the output for a Descendant
Narrative Report and/or Multiple Lines of Descent Report. Already, I'm
having trouble in creating the Table of Contents and the Name Index.

Has anyone had success with doing these RTF format reports using OpenOffice?

If so, might I get some step-by step instructions on creating the Table of
Contents and Indexes with this program? Also, I've noticed that even though
I selected the option to embed graphics in the file I see no pictures, and
could use some help here, too. Are there any caveats or gotchas that I
need to be aware of in using OpenOffice with the Legacy generated RTF files?

If this is a bit off topic for the group in general, feel free to reply
off-line.

Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Re: [LegacyUG] How do you personally put in information that you think is incorrect....

I think someone in Legacy has suggested creating Events named
Disproven Birth, Disproven Death, etc. for this information. Then
it is included in any report that contains events but it is clear that
it is not to be accepted (but, if you want to create a report without
this data, you could make these event Private).

2006-12-19 Thread Dan Bateham

Ron,

I have taken a look at your Blog about creating a Legacy Ancestry Book
Using OpenOffice.org.

It appears this answers all my questions about Legacy RTF files in
OpenOffice. I will put your suggestions to good use. And yes, I am using OOo
version 2.1.

BTW, you have a very nice looking web site.

Thank you,
Dan Bateham

Dan,

Please see the Blogs section in mywebsite (Address below). This relates to
OOo version 2.04 and I haven't had time to test in 2.1 (will do in the new
year - do you mean 2.1 btw) but broadly should be the same technique.

proven. you can also put in your notes possibilities of where to search in

My father and I have been working on one of our Ancestors for 40 years now (he
is our brick wall.)

I recently discovered that one of the sources we had used for some information
probably does not pertain to this ancestor after all. My father had found our
ancestor living in a Mental Assylum in the Canadian 1881 Census, under the name
of McCasline (our name is McCaslin...). From that information and further
research, we had an exact death date and place (from the assylum), a calculated
birthdate (a few years off our other calculated birthdate), and some other
information. The rest of the family had not been found on the census.

I have since discovered that ancestor AND most of the Family living in the same
county as they did in 1871 - but under McCastin (the t didn't match the l in
Soundex, but of course looks very similar!) The information matches the
information from the other census's.

So either the McCasline was the wrong person - or he was sometimes at the
assylum, and sometimes at home - and got counted twice. (so obviously I need
to do more research)

So now the question.
I do have what I've found commented in the notes.
I don't want to just remove the information from the files but I don't
want to get confused either, thinking I have the definate information when it

Of course, a lot depends on what you produce from your database--whether
it's a book, report, or whatever. My main output is a GEDCOM for posting

describe: I have a Master Source simply called NOTE with no additional
source information. At the correct McCaslin's screen I would attach this
source (probably to the name field) and in the Source Detail Text box list
the information found pertaining to the other person and write an
explanation that this is probably not the same individual.

Another option would be to simply create an unlinked individual and add all
his information until you eventually find if and where he fits in your tree.
In this case, I would still attach a cautionary note to the correct
ancestor's record.

Hi Heather,

If you go to the 'Sample' file that comes with Legacy and click on the
Events for Asa Clark Brown, one of the events is 'Disproven Birth'. My
suggestion is to use something similar. Put the information in an event
called 'Disproved', 'Disproved' or something similar and add the information
in the notes section, you could then link your disproven source to the Event
in the usual way. I think I would work along these lines.

Beth,

After choosing PDF or RTF as your output option and clicking the
Create button, did you give the file a name?? If you didn't then the
printer icon in Legacy just keeps spinning its wheels' and no report is
ever produced. Sounds simplistic but I (and others) have gotten caught
in this mistake. Hopefully this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Mapping Gedcom Tags to Legacy

2006-12-19 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
remember Gedcom, and especially 5.5 is a program
created by committee. They did a good job, but I don't
know if there is even a plan to update the current
version. I don't edit them now. I just wanted to show
how my custom tags come out in G55. Many programs
allegedly accept some of them and a few take all of
them. I have no clue which does what. I sent most of
mine with no extra editting, with no complaints. Most
people I deal with lately now have Legacy, so I send
that way.

--- Stuart Gregory [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Greetings again to all,

Cathy, there is no need for you to be sorry. You
 have helped me and
others many times. Thank you again for your
 contribution.

Elizabeth, my destination for the Gedcoms I produce
 is the PhpGedView
program which I use on my web site. Although it
 will read all Gedcoms
it will, like Legacy and most other programs, ignore
 or create errors
with tags it does not understand. It will accept
 most Gedcom V5.5
tags, although there are a couple of glitches. The
 cause of most of
this is that Gedcom V5.5 is not as clearly defined
 as it should be.
There are many areas open to interpretation by
 programmers trying to
produce software compatible with this standard.

I agree with your comments regarding avoiding the
 use of custom
events. But referring to my earlier comments -
 wouldn't it be
beneficial if we could create a custom event and
 assign a valid V5.5
tag to this event? Going on with this theme,
 wouldn't it be beneficial
if all current events could show the tag that will
 be used when the
event is exported? This would clarify some of the
 troubles I am
 encountering.

I am not sure that your statement that Legacy
 exports all Gedcom
tags by default is correct in respect to V5.5. If
 you take my examples
given previously, three of the four are not exported
 by default. The
tag NATU (a valid V5.5 tag) is exported by default,
 but I can see no
way that I can enter a naturalisation event into
 Legacy. The closest
I can come to is the Legacy event called
 Citizenship. But entering
details in this event does not export with a NATU
 tag. Instead it
exports as simply an EVEN, or simple event tag. This
 is possibly
understandable as becoming a citizen and becoming
 naturalised person
 are not necessarily the same.

Getting back to my original post, it would seem that
 for me to see all
of the different tags generated by Legacy, I am
 going to have to
create a special database and complete entries in
 all of the available
data entry places including all events. I was hoping
 that I could
avoiding this large job if someone else had done
 this. I believe in
the concept of not re-inventing the wheel. The
 programmers must have a
correlated list if no one else has.

Thanks again Elizabeth, for your contribution, not
 only this time but
for the prior occasions when you have responded to
 my call for
 assistance.

Rich, thank you for your contributions also. I am
 wishing to avoid
having to manually edit each of the Gedcoms as I
 produce them. As
stated earlier, I use the Gedcom V5.5 as the basis
 of my data for my
web site. Currently I am updating this on almost a
 daily basis. To
manually edit a Gedcom that is now 3.5 Megs on each
 occasion is not
desirable if possible at all. That is, ensuring
 each of the
appropriate tags are changed in the time that I have
 available.

I am grateful of all contributions made and I join
 with many others in
thanking Legacy for making this list available and
 for the advice
 given by other learned users.

RE: [LegacyUG] How do you personally put in information that you think is incorrect....

2006-12-19 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
One thing on this topic. I have disproved a version of
my line accepted by one of the Hereditary Societies.
So I always include a note about the disproven line,
but had not formalized it, until next week.

 Hi Heather,

If you go to the 'Sample' file that comes with
 Legacy and click on the
Events for Asa Clark Brown, one of the events is
 'Disproven Birth'. My
suggestion is to use something similar. Put the
 information in an event
called 'Disproved', 'Disproved' or something similar
 and add the information
in the notes section, you could then link your
 disproven source to the Event
in the usual way. I think I would work along these
 lines.

 Best wishes

Subject: [LegacyUG] How do you personally put in
 information that you think
 is incorrect

My father and I have been working on one of our
 Ancestors for 40 years now
 (he is our brick wall.)

I recently discovered that one of the sources we had
 used for some
information probably does not pertain to this
 ancestor after all. My father
had found our ancestor living in a Mental Assylum
 in the Canadian 1881
Census, under the name of McCasline (our name is
 McCaslin...). From that
information and further research, we had an exact
 death date and place (from
the assylum), a calculated birthdate (a few years
 off our other calculated
birthdate), and some other information. The rest of
 the family had not been
 found on the census.

I have since discovered that ancestor AND most of
 the Family living in the
same county as they did in 1871 - but under McCastin
  (the t didn't match
the l in Soundex, but of course looks very similar!)
  The information
matches the information from the other census's.

So either the McCasline was the wrong person - or he
 was sometimes at the
assylum, and sometimes at home - and got counted
 twice. (so obviously I
 need to do more research)

 So now the question.
I do have what I've found commented in the notes.
I don't want to just remove the information from the
 files but I don't
want to get confused either, thinking I have the
 definate information when
it is now put under a great amount of doubt. And
 even if I do disprove
the information, I don't want to just remove it
 either, as others might make
 the same mistake?

So - how do you put disproved or doubtful
 information (that others might
find and think is right) into Legacy in such a way
 that it is totally clear
 it is disproved or doubtful?

 I do realize there isn't 1 right way - but I'd like
 to hear what people
 would suggest!

 Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] Book-Descendant report problem with creating PDF or RTF format

2006-12-19 Thread Beth Gay

Hi Bob,

Yep that was my problem but I finally figured it out.

Beth,

After choosing PDF or RTF as your output option and clicking the
Create button, did you give the file a name?? If you didn't then
the printer icon in Legacy just keeps spinning its wheels' and no
report is ever produced. Sounds simplistic but I (and others) have
gotten caught in this mistake. Hopefully this helps.

Hello list,

I am still running version 6.0.0.110 deluxe. I attempted to create a
descendant report under the book menu in rtf or pdf format. Legacy
just goes on and on creating the report and never finishes. The
screen/printer report is only 12 pages and I did create a PDF report
from there with no problem.

Also in this research database, I have entered children as not
proven, which is not indicated in the report and also in the compiler
information I have comments which don't seem to be in the report
either. Have I missed an option?

Kindest regards,
Beth G.
