Well, Brian, that's not perhaps the most helpful reply I've seen
written on these boards. I have already done that.

If you go help-numbering you find three systems listed - Henry,
d'Aboville and de Villiers. All are descendant systems and it is not
obvious how any one of them might be applied here. As I said, I'm
doing an ancestry report.

The example I gave - 285283394 - is 28 generations back, but the rest
defeats me.

It would be worth looking at the free program from Microsoft called SyncToy
(from the MS site) which automatically updates the data files between 2 (or

It allows me to work on any machine and update all databases to the same

Re: [LegacyUG] Transfer files between computers.

2006-12-25 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Diane,

As you've already seen, there is more than one way to achieve the
desired result. No one method is it, each has its own merits and
problems and you will need to consider how they fit with you and make
your own decisions.

My method is to have the working copy on my desktop computer, and a
reference copy on the laptop. I *only* alter the data on the
desktop/working copy (bar one exception, see below), and when I'm about
to head out somewhere I transfer a fresh up-to-date copy to the desktop
via the network we have running in the house. A flash drive would also
do nicely if the network wasn't there.

When I'm out and about doing research, I record my findings in a
separate document (OpenOffice, as it happens), which I then copy to my
desktop when I get home and enter the data into Legacy on the desktop,
too. The only time I alter the Legacy data on the laptop/reference copy
is when I'm working through the ToDo list, in which case I close items
that I've done as I work so I can see what is left to attend to. Of
course, the items on the desktop/working copy will need to be altered
later on as well, so this is a duplication, but I can live with that; on
the reference copy all I do is mark an item Closed, on the working
copy I'll also enter details about what the research found.

Hope this helps. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Reports

2006-12-25 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Alastair,

Perhaps you could be more precise about what it is you are trying to do
and the steps you've already taken? Brian was not to know that you had
already tried his suggestion since you did not say so previously. BTW,
Brian said in his reply Click on the Help button on the Ancestor Report
screen. Have you tried following his actual instructions - because
although you say you did, what follows indicates you may not have.
Please take a moment to reconsider the steps you have taken, and what
Brian actually suggested. And please don't shoot the messenger. ;-)

Which report are you trying to generate, exactly? The Ancestor Chart,
or the Ancestor Book Report? Can you work out what the number
285283394 that you mention is referring to - is it a RIN, or is it an
Ahnentafel number, or something else? It might be that looking at a
lower number, perhaps the one assigned to yourself in the report, will
be easier to work out than that particular one?

The RIN can be turned off on the Ancestor Book Report, but I cannot see
an option for turning off the Ahnentafel number.

Hope this helps, Alastair. :-)

Wendy Howard

I put "child", "son" or "dau" as the given name. With "child" you wouldn't know the sex so click on the "?" and it turns a green color for unknown sex. You could put those ID's in the prefix field if you wanted, instead.

Re: [LegacyUG] Reports

2006-12-25 Thread Cathy

Hi Alistair,

Re 1)
Have you got on John Brown's marriage screen:
a) marked as unmarried
b) relevant wording chosen (if desired).

Despite the fact that at this time you don't know whether or not he
was married, if you don't want the report to say he was married, you
have to say he isn't. Then the report says had a child unless
you've chosen alternate wording.

Re 2)
It sounds as if you have some glitch to get those numbers. I can't
recall what fixes it but they are mentioned by people from time to
time. If Maintenance Check/Repair doesn't fix it try resetting the
Report options or deleting the relevant .usr file and then rechoose
your report options.

I've looked at the wording on bottom right of the marriage screen

With so much flexibility in creating reports, I must be missing

What is this number please?

Re: [LegacyUG] Recording Unknown Names of Children

2006-12-25 Thread Cathy

For me, that depends on where they are in my tree.
If they are close relatives, Child One, or Boy/Girl One if I know gender.
If not, a note in the Marriage Notes. eg: This couple had 8 children.
Details known for two.

I particularly do this for parents of those who have married in, when
I may not list the other children even when I do have their details
as you have to limit your tree somewhere.

Re: [LegacyUG] Transfer files between computers.

2006-12-25 Thread Bruce Jones

One more vote for keeping your Legacy multimedia files on a USB/pen
drive with the Legacy program installed on both the desktop and the
laptop. Perform backups to the hard drives on whichever computer you
are using. This way, you never have to be concerned with
syncronization and you have your data file on three different drives
(master on the USB drive, backups on both the desktop and the laptop
hard drives). I can't think of any disadvantages to this setup.

Hi.

Have tried various ways. To me the best way is to run the database on a
flash/ pen drive (and put all media files on the flash drive too). This way
you are using the same database. I then do the zip backup to my desktop
computer.

Kind Regards,
