Re: [LegacyUG] Help needed

2007-04-12 Thread Tracy Skegg

Hi Sandy
To transfer the information between computers I'd find it easiest to backup
the Legacy file using both the filename and date, when you are finished
using the main computer.

Save the backup file onto something that you can read through your second
computer (eg usb stick/thumb drive, cd/dvd), then on the second computer
open Legacy and restore the file you've just backed up. That will keep the
information the same on both computers.
Cheers

RE: [LegacyUG] Slave Holder Information

2007-04-12 Thread Linda Altman
Robert,
I beg to differ with you on the lack of documents that name slaves. On the
1850 and 1860 slave schedules, sometimes the names of slaves were mentioned
although they were not supposed to be unless the slave was 100 years old or
more.

Also wills are filled with the names of slaves and who they were willed to.
For those who are researching their African-American heritage, wills and
estate records are a great way to track slave ownership within a family.
Many times a father will leave slaves to his children and these people are
listed by name. Emancipations are listed as well. The will tells you the
deceased wishes, and the estate and probate records will detail how the
estate was actually settled. This can also be a good way to locate the
origins of slaves, as part of the estate's inventory may be record books of
purchases if the estate was large. You would of course cite your sources as
to the will and the estate/probate records.

You can use Legacy to track slave owners as either events, and I would tag
everyone who had the same slave owner for ease of reporting, or you could go
another route and list the slaves as *children* of the slave owner [as well
as link those children to their rightful parents]. However, list the
relationship to the father/mother as a custom relationship called slave.

Re: [LegacyUG] digitized articles and books

2007-04-12 Thread Roger Lewis

I interpret your query to mean that you want to be able to go to a SINGLE
source/search engine, enter the name of a book and, if that book is
digitized and available online somewhere, get a response so indicating.
Unfortunately, you cannot do so.

Some digitized books can be located at http://books.google.com and the list
is growing daily. However, many digitized books can only be located
and accessed through databases/catalogs that are not searched by Google or
other search engines. Examples are PERSI, the Family History Archive at
Brigham Young University, University of Michigan Digital Library, Cornell
University Library Windows on the Past, Godfrey Memorial Library and, I am
sure, many more.

And, it is surprising to me that Cyndi's List does not have a section
containing links to sites providing access to digitized books (or did I miss
it?)

But what I'm wondering if there's anyway to find out whether a
genealogical/historical, etc., book or article is digitized and online? I
know some good websites that have a lot of that kind of thing, but I don't
know a way of searching to find out whether a particular book/article is
available ANYwhere on the Internet?

Hope this helps.

Pat,
Go to the individual view for one of the duplicated children. Look for
the parent icon. Does it have more than a 1 in a box? Click on the
parent icon. Does it show more than one set? Highlight the incorrect
parent set, if it is there, and select Unlink from Child.

You probably don't have two records for the child, you probably just
linked them twice.

I hope this works for you.

2007-04-12 Thread C.G. Ouimet

Also, ...

Check the RIN's of the kid's you believe to be duplicates. That's the number
in square brackets in the top bar of the Individual's Information window. If
the two John's believed to be the one son duplicated have the same RIN, you
only have the one John but he is linked twice and therefore looks like a
duplicate but isn't.

Hi Pat,

Not sure if this will help. But I would unlink the child from the parents
(may need to be unlinked more than once) and then when you have correct
father and mother on the screen add the child back in.

Hope this helps.

Let's see if I can explain this better. I think I have multiple
 problems.

 Joseph married three times
by his 1st wife Elen, he had only one child, Ann
by his second wife Sarah, he had two more, David and Thomas

I entered Ann as the daughter of Joseph and his first wife
correctly. Then, somehow I also entered the two boys as sons of
Joseph and his first wife. I need to remove them and only have
the two boys show up under Joseph and his 2nd wife. The two boys
are also doubled under the first wife - once as if they are
natural sons of Joseph and Ann, once as if they are natural to
 Joseph, step to Elen.

When I switch to the 2nd wife, Sarah, Ann shows as a 1/2
(correct), but I have one set of sons, Thomas and David as
natural to both Joseph and the 2nd wife (correct) and a repeat
set as natural to Joseph and 1/2 to Elen (incorrect).

I'm not at all certain how to clean up this mess.

 Pat,
Go to the individual view for one of the duplicated children.
 Look for
the parent icon. Does it have more than a 1 in a box? Click on
 the
parent icon. Does it show more than one set? Highlight the
 incorrect
parent set, if it is there, and select Unlink from Child.

You probably don't have two records for the child, you probably
 just
 linked them twice.

I hope this works for you.

Re: [LegacyUG] need help in fixing this problem

2007-04-12 Thread Pat Jones
Hmmm. I just did that but the two boys are still connected to
father and 1st wife (incorrect) as well as father and 2nd wife
(correct). They show as 1/2s under father and 1st wife. When I
right click on them under the father and 1st wife, neither show
up on the Children's setting, just the daughter which should be
there.

I checked both boys to see if they each have duplicates. That
problem is corrected. It is the same two individuals showing up
as children for the father and 1st wife and the father and 2nd
wife. They are children of the father and 2nd wife only (the 1st
wife was dead). I don't think the program is supposed to be
showing these two boys as 1/2s of the dead wife. But I can't
make it stop doing that.

RE: [LegacyUG] need help in fixing this problem

2007-04-12 Thread Mel Morris
Let's see if I can help
I think if you open up the family that is technically incorrect ie correct
father, incorrect mother and two sons. I believe the simplest way is to
initially 'unlink' the incorrect mother/wife from the husband. i.e
rightclick wife and click 'unlink' from husband - this is only temporary -
the sons will stay with the husband, and hopefully still with their original
mother.
Then you will have the father only showing one named wife, but also showing
the father with an 'unknown' person as mother of the first daughter. If you
click on that 'unknown' wife/mother you should then be offered to 'add a new
person or 'link to existing person' and the little box 'add this person to
the currently displayed marriage needs to be checked. You should select
Link to an existing person and then you can reattach wife #1 only to the
husband and daughter #1.
Hope that isnt' too complicated.

2007-04-12 Thread Pat Jones
That didn't work. I even tried unlinking the boys from the
unlinked wife, then adding the wife back in, then the boys under
the correct wife but they showed up again under the incorrect
wife as well.

Is there anyone from support online?

Let's see if I can help
I think if you open up the family that is technically incorrect
ie correct
father, incorrect mother and two sons. I believe the simplest way
is to
initially 'unlink' the incorrect mother/wife from the husband.
i.e
rightclick wife and click 'unlink' from husband - this is only
temporary -
the sons will stay with the husband, and hopefully still with
their original
mother.
Then you will have the father only showing one named wife, but
also showing
the father with an 'unknown' person as mother of the first
daughter. If you
click on that 'unknown' wife/mother you should then be offered to
'add a new
person or 'link to existing person' and the little box 'add this
person to
the currently displayed marriage needs to be checked. You should
select
Link to an existing person and then you can reattach wife #1
only to the
husband and daughter #1.
Hope that isnt' too complicated.

Hmmm. I just did that but the two boys are still connected to

Re: [LegacyUG] need help in fixing this problem

2007-04-12 Thread Cathy

Hi Pat,
When showing 1/2 kids in Legacy Family View, this can be confusing as
we expect that it will show real relationships only. However, it
shows any children who are the child of one of the parents in the
parent position.

If the boys are showing as 1/2's under the father and 1st wife,
that's just the way the display is in Legacy Family View when you've
chosen to show 1/2 kids. If they are showing as full children, then
you have them linked twice and you need to follow the instructions
you've been given to unlink them.

When you run reports, they'll appear correctly, so they won't be in
the child list for father and 1st wife.

Hope that clarifies,
Cathy

Pat,

For what it's worth I have never been able to stop Legacy showing a second
or third family's children as 1/2 children to the first marriage, and I hate
to think how many times I've tried. I no longer bother about it.

If it's any consolation this does not show in reports and web pages.

2007-04-12 Thread Cathy

Hi Pat,

Family View IS NOT a Family Group Sheet OR a living together in a
household sheet.

It gives clues to both those things.

You just need to learn what Legacy means by 1/2 on the Family View in
order to interpret the wealth of information that we have access to
on the Family View.

It's your choice how much information is available to you - for
example, whether you show 1/2 kids or not. If you can't train
yourself to recognise what is meant by the 1/2, then by all means
leave it turned off.
But if you start linking daughter's in again because they are no
longer showing because she is the daughter of a previous marriage,
you'll mess up reports.
The only time you'd do that was if she was formally adopted by the
second wife and then you'd note that in the Child-Parent Relationships.

Cheers,
Cathy

It is the same two individuals showing
up
as children for the father and 1st wife and the father and 2nd
wife. They are children of the father and 2nd wife only (the
1st
wife was dead). I don't think the program is supposed to be
showing these two boys as 1/2s of the dead wife. But I can't
make it stop doing that.

That is exactly the situation and one should bear in mind that if Show 1/2
Kids is turned off no 1/2 kids will be displayed anywhere on the various
screens. Or to be completely accurate kids will only show up where the are
the natural children of both parents (including unknowns).

Hi Pat,
Glad I could help.
I think that you can only show the daughter with her true parents or show
all children with the show 1/2 kids. - Can't have it both ways.

Anne, that did it! The 1/2s disappeared.
Now, the daughter is still living with the father when he
remarries; to get her to show up as living with them, do I just
add her again to that marriage or is there a better way?

Unfortunately they mispelled the word that might have automatically
kicked them out of the LUG (unless that mail feature was finally

Mine don't show up as 1/2 - each family view has one wife and one husband

If I click on the other marriage, then the children from that marriage show

Pat,

For what it's worth I have never been able to stop Legacy showing a second
or third family's children as 1/2 children to the first marriage, and I hate

to think how many times I've tried. I no longer bother about it.

If it's any consolation this does not show in reports and web pages.

Let's see if I can explain this better. I think I have multiple
problems.

Joseph married three times
by his 1st wife Elen, he had only one child, Ann
by his second wife Sarah, he had two more, David and Thomas

I entered Ann as the daughter of Joseph and his first wife
correctly. Then, somehow I also entered the two boys as sons
of
Joseph and his first wife. I need to remove them and only have
the two boys show up under Joseph and his 2nd wife. The two
boys
are also doubled under the first wife - once as if they are
natural sons of Joseph and Ann, once as if they are natural to
Joseph, step to Elen.

Click
on
the
parent icon. Does it show more than one set? Highlight the
incorrect
parent set, if it is there, and select Unlink from Child.

You probably don't have two records for the child, you probably
just
linked them twice.

I hope this works for you.
