Re: [LegacyUG] Pedigree Chart LDS Ordinance Abbreviations

2007-04-15 Thread Bert van Kootwijk
It is in de help:

Help > Temple Tab:

Seal Children to Highlighted Spouse

Submits the children of the person and the highlighted spouse in the
Spouses/Children list to them. The current children are those associated with
a highlighted spouse in the list or, if a child is highlighted, he or she and
any siblings are submitted. This is much easier and faster than trying to find
each child in the Name List and sealing him or her to the parents one at a
time. Each successfully qualified child receives a P in the S column of the
Spouses/Children list. If all the children are qualified to be sealed to the
parents, a capital C is placed in the C column of the current person in the
Name List. If some but not all of the children are qualified, a lower case c
is place in the column. Reasons are shown in the Comments box for any
non-qualifying sealings.

The parents must be sealed together (or submitted for sealing) before the
children can be sealed to them. If this has not been previously been done,
they will be submitted before the children are sealed to them. If the parents
cannot be sealed together, the children won't be sealed to them.

If the parents or the children have not had their individual ordinances done,
these will be submitted also.

I’ve searched the owners manual, help screens, and even attempted to apply
some logic and still can’t figure this out. When printing a pedigree chart
which includes the LDS ordinance abbreviations, I understand B, E, P, S but
what does the capital “C” and small “c” represent?

Emails have subject lines for a reason.
You can delete emails with subject lines of no interest.
When reading a mailing list, if it is filtered
into its own mailbox and you set the mailbox so
that at one level it sorts by subject (I use
Eudora and you can use several criteria for
sorting), then all emails with the same subject
line are sorted together and it is a simple
matter to delete them. Takes seconds to deal with
a high volume mailing list and leave just the emails I want to read.

I'm on a lot of email lists. I read almost all
the Legacy mail except when I'm especially busy
as I have been the last couple of weeks.

Other lists I delete the majority just on subject line.

Having to go to forums just takes too long for me.

Perhaps I just don't understand the original
suggestion. I can't see how a filter could be set
up to bring you topics of interest. People write
such strange subject lines and I can't imagine
that they would fill in keywords correctly either.
Certainly on Rootsweb forums, you get many
messages with surnames listed in the relevant
boxes which are completely irrelevant to the current message.

RE: [LegacyUG] Pedigree Chart LDS Ordinance Abbreviations

2007-04-15 Thread Kate
No I didn't mean to leave that impression. I didn't mean to confuse
everyone. Let me explain how Legacy handles LDS Ordinance information.

When you use the tool in Legacy to submit names for Temple ordinance work.
The next step occurs after you have used the tool to check names on the IIGI
for duplicates. Then, Legacy marks the individual's temple records with a
lower case letter. Legacy also enters the notation submitted on the
individual's records. When they are submitted and cleared for the work to
be done (in Temple Ready at the FHC) and you create the disk to submit to
the temple, then, Legacy updates your records and marks the records for the
individual as cleared. The information will still show up on the pedigree
chart with the lower case letter. Then, when you add the date of the temple
ordinances for the individual, then Legacy will change the letters to the
capital letters.

One caution, at the FHC when you are making the disk for the Temple you will
also need to make a disk to update your records. If not, you will have to
enter all the ordinance data by hand.

Ted, the children cannot be sealed to their parents until the parents are
sealed to each other. However, I am sure you will find exceptions when
working in this area. To process those children who have not been sealed,
first make sure the parents have all of their ordinance work recorded in
your database. Then, you would choose to submit the children in a family
group with their parents (whose work is already done) and Temple Ready will
clear them for the sealing ordinance. If you need further information, just
contact me off list.

In the help section in Legacy there is a very good description of the steps
that need to be taken.

Hope this helps

Re: [LegacyUG] Overwhelming

2007-04-15 Thread Cathy

Certainly on Rootsweb forums, you get many
messages with surnames listed in the relevant
boxes which are completely irrelevant to the current message.

you would not receive this in your inbox if it

I’m a bit confused. Are you saying when all of the ordinance work is completed
for the individual we get a capital C? I have some names with BESC. The
individual is missing the “P” (sealed to parents) ordinance. I have names with
BEPS (all ordinance work done) but no C. I have others with BEPSC and yet
others with BESC. Is there somewhere in the Help menu or Owners Manual that

Re: [LegacyUG] Birthday Reminders

2007-04-15 Thread Cathy

Hi Lori,
You must have a very small database to make that a feasible use of
the birthday reminder. The window on the Home Tab that shows the
reminder isn't that big.

If you want a Birthday List of everyone in your file, you can do a
Report - use the Calendar List Report.

BTW - the answer to your question is No, not in Legacy though you
could in Access.

Re: [LegacyUG] Living individuals

2007-04-15 Thread Cathy

Hi Eva,
You can't in Legacy. You could in Access.

Note that in Legacy "private" is different from "suppress details of
living" and the latter, which can be set in reports and exports, may
be OK for you. However, if you are really wanting to display some
living people and not others, that is a different matter.
I'm one of those who don't think the information of the living should
be included on online trees whether or not people have given permission.

Tom,

If your main (only) objective in your case is not to disclose the details
for living people then these can be supressed in all report options so that
only the names are published. This can be done globally.

I use both this technique and also "private" on my website. I do not like
the "living" option so I don't use it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Another refinement

2007-04-15 Thread Renee Zamora
My solution is to put in the User ID field a code for my relationship to
that person. Since my database is now a combination of four separate fields
I notate a different starting letter to show what line a person is to me.
H3C4R would stand for my Harris family 3rd cousin 4 times removed.

When you create web pages of your genealogy in Legacy you can choose to have
the User ID show, just check that option under the tab "What".

When I submitted my database to Rootsweb. I noticed that the User ID field
now comes across as the Reference Number. If you look at the following
link:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rzamor1&id=I5157
You will see Moses Harris Reference Number: H6GGF shows he is my 6th great
grandfather. I tell people on the top of the page to look for the reference
codes and how that shows the relationship to me.

Now I’m checking my pedigree chart and checking against the ordinance work.
Appears the large C is “all of the children’s ordinance work has been done”
and the small c represents “partial work completed”. No C means no work

RE: [LegacyUG] Living individuals

2007-04-15 Thread ronald ferguson

Tom,

If your main (only) objective in your case is not to disclose the details
for living people then these can be supressed in all report options so that
only the names are published. This can be done globally.

I use both this technique and also "private" on my website. I do not like
the "living" option so I don't use it.

My reason for wanting the living private is that I intend to put my 'stuff'
on a CD for giving to those who ask for 'a copy'. Most of those who will
receive this wont mind others knowing who they are related to or they came
from, they just might not like others knowing their age!! and other
things about them.
Lots of great insights came forth and I hadn't realized I could in fact
choose the living as private when exporting.
Thanks very much

Hi Tom,
Any special reason for wanting to do this?

In reports you can suppress details for Living people and you can
change names to Living.
Or you can choose to only print a certain number of generations that
don't include the living generations.

You can do similar in an export.

If you want to be extra careful, when you are wanting to generate a
report or website or send a gedcom without living people you could
Search for individuals - living equal to NO
Tag them and export that tagged group to a new temporary database and
make your reports etc there.

Easier than making all living also private.

Cheers,
Cathy

In my scanned documents, I have opted to create separate subfolders by

document type, underscore, and the person(s) name found on that document.
For example, bc_Clarence Pace (This would be a birth certificate for
Clarence Pace) or cen_1850 Clarence Pace (1850 census for Clarence Pace).

LIke I said before, you have to create a system that makes sense for you.

Saving your images as a .tiff file is the commonly accepted 'best way' to
keep digital copies of your original. This would then become your 'master
copy'.

From that you could make .jpgs to whatever file size you deem appropriate
for use (website, email atch, Legacy image, etc).

As for where to file your digital images, opinions on this will vary. I
have one folder under my Legacy directory titled "Images". Within this
folder I have several sub-folders. My preference is to keep all 'people'
images in one sub-folder titled "Photograph". I also have digital images
of
buildings, monuments, correspondence, newspaper articles, census records,
documents, etc. These are also all filed in separate sub-folders according
to their subject category.

How you title your images is also a matter of personal preference. I
prefer
a simple numbering system (File ID). For example, my "Photographs" are
labeled P0001, P0002, P0003, and so on. My "Documents" are labeled D0001,
D0002, D0003, and so on. The same applies to my other image categories.

Legacy allows you to capture details of each image by providing image
fields
such as "Caption", "Date", "Description", and "File ID". And also permits
assigning images to specific individuals. This is where I record the
necessary details about each image.

Unfortunately as yet Legacy only provides one report format for this
information. The report sorts by File ID. Suggestions have been submitted
to also include an alphabetical sort and other image report options.

Until then one must use a supplemental program to report details of the
images. Many people use MS Access since Access is directly compatible with
Legacy's data base. However, this requires a reasonable understanding of
the Access program and its interface with Legacy to generate the desired
reports. Not a lighthearted undertaking.

Once Legacy establishes a more sophisticated report capability for images,
the process will be simple and efficient.

If I can help further with any specific questions, feel free to email me
directly.

A filing (or catalog) system, which includes the process of numbering
originals and digitial images, is just that---a "filing system". It is
intended to catalog items for easy/effiicient retrieval. It is not a
genealogy system to identify relationships---Legacy performs that
mission
quite well. Expecting more from your file numbering system than where
an
item is located is fraught with unwieldy complications.

A simple acid test when considering file numbering systems is the number
of
copies needed of an original. If more than one copy of an original is
needed, the system should be rethought. Any numbering system which
contains
a name or is associated to an individual, by its nature will require
multiple copies when more than one person appears or is mentioned.
When
multiple copies begin appearing, your filing system has become
inefficient
and will eventually become ineffective.

As mentioned previously, I file almost everything using a basic
Ahnentafel
numbering system (not maps; they are by state/county, and not census;
they
are by year/state/county). The main advantages are filing by ancestry
(starting with #1 and working back each generation) rather than
descendancy;

Ancestral
recording generations from present back any ancestors is the logical

of researching.  All descendancy systems depend upon selecting one
ancestor
and start from that person recording to present . Another advantage is
seeing everyone as related to others of each generation (RIN/MRIN offer
no display of relationships) and depend entirely upon computer searching
(randomly scrambled in a file cabinet).

Even correspondence files can be stored or/and recorded by Ahnentafel;
then
sub-filed alphabetically by the name of the correspondence for that
Ahnentafel number.

The disadvantages are seeing some descendants with long ID numbers (but
they still show relationship) and having to individually assigning the
correct (User ID in Legacy) Ahnentafel ID numbers. Maybe some day some
genealogy program will consider accommodating that entire numbering
system
to match the standard Ahnentafel numbers from every pedigree chart).

In regard to  Photos; just organize the photo album by Ahnentafel
numbers. In the case of group photos I cross reference everyone in the
photo
to the eldest known direct line ancestor in that photo (of course this
means
that different surname albums are created).

As for documents, the Ahnentafel numbers work just great, although I
separate notebooks of vitals from other documents and subdivide other
documents into major categories such as military, religious, occupation,
etc. to suit my needs (but all of those are in the same ahnentafel
numbered
notebook for that surname.

Incidentally, I also use the basic color coding for surnames to keep my
paternal direct surname line files, notebooks, and photo albums in blue,
etc.

Finally I am certain of only one thing about organizing our genealogy
records: there must be sufficient time devoted to the task. I find that
less
than two hours per month for nothing but organizing is my bare minimum.
If I
am hot into research time, I have to reserve at least 1/10 of my time to
organize what I am collecting.

Yes; that currently is the only option without using a supplemental program.
Hopefully the Legacy staff will include additional Image/File ID report

individuals and Source detail.

The 'filter' as described by Wendy Howard WORKS!
This filter is a 'rule' that moves mail (for instance) from the legacyusergroup to any mail folder you create in your mailbox.  What this does is keep this mail seperate making it very easy to read only those messages that interest you.  Find a good one?  Just click on 'put in folder?' and move it to your 'keeper' folder and delete the balance.  I have used this for several years.  Try it!

RE: [LegacyUG] About Picture Filing

2007-04-15 Thread Peggy Sorrell
You need to find the filing and naming system that makes sense for you. I
personally have one folder titled FH Photos and a second folder titles FH
Scanned documents.

On my pictures, I list everyone's name; the reason I do this is because I can
then use Picasa (free software) and search by a name and it pulls up EVERY
picture of that person in my files.

In my scanned documents, I have opted to create separate subfolders by
surname. Within each surname folder, I name each document by an abbreviated
document type, underscore, and the person(s) name found on that document. For
example, bc_Clarence Pace (This would be a birth certificate for Clarence Pace)
or cen_1850 Clarence Pace (1850 census for Clarence Pace).

LIke I said before, you have to create a system that makes sense for you.

for use (website, email atch, Legacy image, etc).

As for where to file your digital images, opinions on this will vary. I
have one folder under my Legacy directory titled "Images". Within this
folder I have several sub-folders. My preference is to keep all 'people'
images in one sub-folder titled "Photograph". I also have digital images of
buildings, monuments, correspondence, newspaper articles, census records,
documents, etc. These are also all filed in separate sub-folders according
to their subject category.

How you title your images is also a matter of personal preference. I prefer
a simple numbering system (File ID). For example, my "Photographs" are
labeled P0001, P0002, P0003, and so on. My "Documents" are labeled D0001,
D0002, D0003, and so on. The same applies to my other image categories.

Legacy allows you to capture details of each image by providing image fields
such as "Caption", "Date", "Description", and "File ID".

If I can help further with any specific questions, feel free to email me
directly.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering "generic" information

2007-04-15 Thread Susan Daily

Richard,
One suggestion might be to create a fictitious individual named
"Generic Surname" (you will always be able to find them sorting by
first name), replace Surname with which ever family line you'd like to
attach the info to. Then when you print reports, you can add a report
for that "individual" along with whatever reports you would normally
print. This allows you to create several places (i.e. individuals) to
store articles of interest.

Leave all the basic data blank, and simply add the various articles as
separate events, rather than in the notes. Because with events, you
can always re-sort by date.

This is just one idea. Hope it helps you to think of other possibilities.

Any suggestions as to where I might include "generic-type" newspaper
articles in Legacy? The information is of an historical nature, and I would
like all members of my family to have access to the articles.

I understand how to include articles, obits, etc., when they apply to a
specific individual, but this information, though germane to the early
family members in general, it really shouldn't be "attached" to an
individual.

How I might enter this type of information into Legacy? Any suggestions???

I totally agree with Ted & Gail on this issue. I belong to many forums from
computers to woodworking machinery and they are much more user friendly than
the format used here at Legacy. Why have to create filters, just subscribe
to the issues that concern you? e.g. you would not receive this in your
inbox if it was of no interest to you.

I would make a source 'Party1903', transribe into the

Re: [LegacyUG] About Picture Filing

2007-04-15 Thread Johnny V

One of the best ways I found to organize and classify pictures and documents
for my genealogy is a standard naming convention using the format;
LastName_First_Middle_RIN_PhotoNumber (0001, 0002, etc.) for individuals,
LastName_MRIN_MarriageNumber (1, 2, etc.) for marriages,
DocumentName_LastName_First_Middle_RIN_DocumentNumber (0001, 0002, etc.) for
Documents,
Headstone_LastName_First_Middle_RIN for headstone pictures, etc.

Using this naming convention, you can easily distinguish between people of
the same name using their RIN of the database and also locate different
items such as Manifests, Census, Headstones, etc. in a flash.

I keep all the photos and documents in the Legacy folder on Drive C in
subfolder Pictures, this way when I want to share any info with relatives
they are very easily located.

Hope this helps

That is why I make a copy and work on that, removing those bits that I don't
want for privacy reasons or just to reduce the size.

You could argue though that if someone is made private then there should be
a way of quickly removing everyone related through them.

I would actually like Legacy to treat the privacy flag the same as other

When exporting to some sites I usually go through a few temporary
intermediate copies and delete many people.

You might not want to identify the Living spouse of someone but just
suppressing Living will still pass their parents which will identify them.
Also if you mark them Private it still passed through all their ancestors.
The only way to be sure of removing them from the report is to delete them
from a temporary copy of the file.

RE: [LegacyUG] Living individuals

2007-04-15 Thread Martin Briscoe
When exporting to some sites I usually go through a few temporary
intermediate copies and delete many people.

You might not want to identify the Living spouse of someone but just
suppressing Living will still pass their parents which will identify them.
Also if you mark them Private it still passed through all their ancestors.
The only way to be sure of removing them from the report is to delete them
from a temporary copy of the file.

Hi Tom,
Any special reason for wanting to do this?

In reports you can suppress details for Living people and you can
change names to Living.
Or you can choose to only print a certain number of generations that
don't include the living generations.

You can do similar in an export.

If you want to be extra careful, when you are wanting to generate a
report or website or send a gedcom without living people you could

Search for individuals - living equal to NO
Tag them and export that tagged group to a new temporary database and
make your reports etc there.

Easier than making all living also private.

Cheers,
Cathy

Hello

Is there a way to check / mark all living persons in the database as
private in one operation? Easy to do one at a time but very
tedious and, knowing me, I'll miss a few!

Thanks
Tom
