Re: [LegacyUG] run-time error 429
Sherry (and all others using Spybot Search Destroy) After I had sent the help message, I did try running the Check/Repair but that did nothing ; then, before I got your message this morning, I tried running Microsoft's System Restore and moving back to a time prior to the weekly clean-up of my computer. Then I tried running Legacy and it worked perfectly. So my gut level feeling was that something had happened when I ran one of the cleanup programs on my computer (Spybot, AVG, AdAware, CCleaner and Registry Mechanic). So I looked to see what each program had removed starting (fortunately) with Spybot. It was ICQ-SpyMonitor. Then I went to the internet and looked that up. The first site up happened to be ICQ-Spymonitor - Safer Networking Forums on which I found a post from you. Apparently by removing the supposed spyware program, for which Spybot appears to have thrown a false positive, it removed some coding that Legacy needs to run. After making certain Legacy was running properly and that I had a clean backup, I next tried cleaning up the computer with AVG and AdAware, neither of which caused any problems; however, I am still left with the supposed spyware ICQ-SpyMonitor on my computer which does bother me. So now the question is should I go ahead and run the check/repair again and then, if that does nothing, follow through with the other instructions on that help? How about the Spybot issue? Since you responded on the Safer Newworking Forum, I presume you also use Spybot? Re: [LegacyUG] run-time error 429
Hi Pat and all, I use the same security utilities as Pat and Spybot SD removed the ICQ-SpyMonitor yesterday. I did not have ocassion to run Legacy so did not notice until this morning that it would not run. After receipt of Pat's note, I opened Spybot SD and had it restore the ICQ-SpyMonitor and now Legacy runs just fine again. Looks like Spybot SD is getting a little over agressive in hunting out spyware. Re: [LegacyUG] Documents
I save my scanned documents as pictures in the source detail Picture Gallery. I don't have any problems with reading my documents which range from small newspaper clippings to full page documents. Have you tried using the Zoom In function to view the document in the Picture Gallery? What resolution are you scanning your documents? I believe most scanning software defaults to 300dpi, which is what I use for documents. You might want to check your software settings. [LegacyUG] Importing Pictures
Well I think I really screwed up, -big time... again! While working with my family file in legacy deluxe, I managed to delete all of the paths to the pictures and thereby eliminating the pictures within legacy. I know that they are still on the hard drive where they are supposed to be, I was able to reestablish the paths by simply importing it from a recent backup of multimedia. However, this did not import the pictures that were attached throughout the program. I know that I can go to the picture center and reattach all the pictures, one by one, by using a printout of the various paths, and names of the pictures from the backup, and then manually attaching them into my current file. I have done quite a bit of work repairing my current file, so, to go back to the backup file, and use it would be lot more work than trying to attach the pictures... I think. I try to import the multimedia into my current database, but I could not figure out how to do it so that it would attach all the pictures as they were attached in the backup. I hope I didn't confuse everybody too much, if not, then you can see my problem. The paths to the pictures in the backup file are the same paths that the current file will use when the pictures are attached. In other words, is there a way to import the pictures to the correct individuals, event's, sources, and so forth, a long with the paths that the pictures are in? A merge is out of the question; because there were some errors in the line numbers and they had to be corrected manually, and I believe those errors remain in the backup. Since we do have multimedia backups, it seems that there would be a way to bring the multimedia pictures into the current database if it has the same individuals, and events, sources, and so forth that use the same RIN, and MRIN numbers. Additional events and individuals that I have added to the new database did not include any pictures in them, so they would not be affected. Looking forward to some help, lots of help, any help. Re: [LegacyUG] Importing Pictures
Hi John, I think this is a lesson to do more regular backups. - but you've no doubt already learnt that one ;-) The backup saves the Family file with the knowledge of the picture links. The multimedia backup just saves the pictures, not the way they are linked to Legacy. There are two possibilities but depending on how many pictures or how many people you have modified data for, they may involve the same amount of work. 1. You could restore a backup with the pics attached and then do an Intellishare merge of your current file into that file. Only the people with new data should come up for merging. However, it may be that everyone that has any pictures will also be presented as that is also a change in the file. Import the file (ask for RINs to be renumbered from a number much greater than your largest RIN. Starting with say 20,001 means that the first numbers may reflect the old RIN - but whether or not that happens, you can see very clearly in the merge who came from which file.) Then use the special duplicate searches tab on the merge window and choose the Intellishare option 2. Or you need to reattach the pictures. On the positive side of reattaching pics, it does give you an opportunity to rethink how your pictures are stored and whether you want to move any, or rename any, or resize them (except for source pics, screen sized is enough for all uses made within Legacy. Also, if you attach through the Picture Centre, then you only have to add a description or caption once. John, If it's any consolation ... you are not the only one who did that! I ran the test all media paths after UNCHECKING the box to remove unreferenced pictures and it came up with the lost picture title ... and asked if the computer should search or me search. I selected to do the searching myself, as I knew exactly where it was. The nice thing that happened was when I found one picture in a certain file, all of the other pictures in that file were found by Legacy. Aparently I just pointed out to it where to look. I only use 3 separate files for my Legacy pictures ... it wasn't a hard job to fix my blunder! Toni - Original Message - From: John D. Re: [LegacyUG] Importing Pictures
Depending on how many different folders contain Legacy pictures, it may not be much effort at all to reattach/relink your pictures. If you have, say, 7 different folders that contain Legacy pictures, you would need to reattach/relink one picture from each of the 7 folders, or 7 pictures, and Legacy will then be able to find all the rest. This is my understanding and also seems to be my experience. Someone correct me if I am mistaken. Re: [LegacyUG] Importing Pictures
I may not be right, but I understood from John that the photos themselves were in the places they used to be but that he's deleted the links in Legacy. You can do this from Options Customise - Locations Tab - Test all multimedia paths button then the Remove all picture ... files button. I'm not sure whether you can do it from elsewhere. If that is what he has done, the Legacy family file has no memory of ever having photos attached and the Picture Galleries will appear empty. If Legacy simply can't find the photos, then the Picture Galleries will have a series of question marks in them and your solution will work. Another way I've used is to go to Options, then Customise, Locations and click on View Current List of Multimedia Locations. If you know where your picture files are, no matter how many, then you can add that directory or edit what is there. Don't forget to click Save before exiting Options HTH Tom -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of leo macdonald Sent: Monday, 7 May 2007 11:13 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Importing Pictures Hi John, I think that you can go to your backup multimedia file, copy it to another place like the Legacy Pictures folder, expand it, now go to your legacy program, go to a person that you know has a picture attached (maybe yourself), click on the picture icon of yourself, a screen will come up, select search for the picture yourself, go to c drive, legacy, pictures, scroll to the picture of yourself and select it. the rest of the pictures should now be automatically attached. Re: [LegacyUG] Sources for narratives in notes
In the way you describe, your sources will be clumped together in a seeming random order. But if you instead create a timeline with each of the source items as an Event, they should come out cleaner and in your order. This way each person in the same event can be handled the same. Just a suggestion. Good luck in any case. Rich in LA CA --- Diane Murach [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I want to write a biographical narrative for each ancestor in Notes. [LegacyUG] Ancestor Colour Coding
Hi Listers I'm using 6 deluxe version build 6.0.0.127 and have added some ancestors in my direct line, yet the Ancestor colour coding is not displaying correctly on either the Family View or Pedigree View. Any ancestor added prior to this build display colour codes correctly. The relationship on the screen appears correctly in the Family View and the people appear in my Pedigree View, but with no colour displays in the Ancestor colour coding box beside their names. When I click on the Ancestor colour box at side of an individual name on Family View or Pedigree View screen a box appears Not In Current Ancestor Line yet my view shows me that he/she is a grandparent with the correct numbering of generations removed in Family View. My file goes through Check/Repair with no errors and my display for Ancestor Colour Coding is checked as on. Any ideas on what's happening? Cheers Tracy Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? I don't use it myself, but if I remember you might do file maintenance to add them, or re-choose the same starting person, which should pick up known relatives (including new ones). This should fix it.
