[LegacyUG] Memory Stick

2007-07-29 Thread Gerda Gustin-Sheeley

I put all my data on a memory stick (nerd stick) and now I am planning a
trip to Salt Lake City. Since I don't want to take my Laptop computer with
me, does the Library have "Legacy" loaded onto their computers, so it would
be easy for my to enter data?

I cannot tell you what to do . . . but I have a nephew that was
married (now divorced), had 2 sons. Then had a sex change operation
and official name change. Now he-she is planning to marry a man that
has biological children. I'm dreading adding this second marriage to
my family tree!! Even his-her photos in Legacy's Picture Gallery
make it look like I've made some stupid errors!:-))

Re: [LegacyUG] Memory Stick

2007-07-29 Thread Joe

H Gerda,

I'm not sure if the Library has Legacy loaded.

If this is yours or any one else's first time to the Library, I would
suggest that you know exactly what you want before you go to the library
as you will become quickly overwhelmed. It may help to do a search
online first using the Online Family Center. This also will save you
time instead of waiting to use a computer then pulling records from the
shelves. Also if a record is in the "vault" you will need to let the
library know ahead of time to pull the film you want.

If you go to the library do not waste your time looking for documents
that you can get online.

I live in NC and did a pilgrimage to the Library last summer. My how
Salt Lake City is very beautiful and clean and I have never been to "big
city" where everyone seemed very friendly and would talk to you.

The Library folks are extremely friendly and helpful. I spent a three
full days from open until close at the Library researching one family
line and ended up gladly spending $90 on copies of records in which I
could take back home with me scan them into my computer and add them to
my Legacy database. I basically copied every person from a specific
county in NC that ended in the surname I was researching--this included
birth records, death records, and marriage records. this payed off when
I got home and had time to look over the data. I linked family that I
never knew I had.

Take a lot of dollar bills with you if you end up doing this. The sad
thing is if I go to my state archive in NC I would spend 3 days getting
5 documents since you have to go through such a bureaucratic process
filling out paperwork to look at one file. It was cheaper for me to
drive across country with the family stay at a timeshare and my wife
graciously letting me spend 3 full days at the Library :)

I'm not sure what you are wanting to accomplish, but unless things have
changed since last year, you could not scan films directly to your
memory stick. They did not have that technology that I am aware of.
There are plenty of film readers, but the computers were packed and you
could only use them an hour at a time.

Again, make sure you know what you want before you go so you do not
waste your time, unless you live close by and have plenty of time to kill.

Gerda and Joe,

I went the SLC FHL this last April for a week. You are right, and I agree
with Joe that the more you can search before you arrive, the better. Take
your thumb drive or CD's so that you can store info from their computers.
There are 3 floors of computers that are occupied most of the time except
for after lunch and before closing. I didn't see any sign of a time limit
and I saw people on the same spot all day. Maybe the time limit was not
enforced during that time period. Take your own magnifying glass too.

[LegacyUG] Pictures

2007-07-29 Thread leo macdonald
Hi Everyone, I am still working on my pictures that I have in my Legacy Data
File. I really appreciated all your responses on how to convert my BMP files
to JPG files.
I have another question that I hope someone can help me out with, some of
the BMP files that I have in my program are scanned images of death notices
that I found in local newspapers, what I would like to be able to do is to
highlight the write-up on these BMP or JPG files, then copy and paste the
information into either the death notes field or in the notes section of
death notice event that I add to the person who has died, is this possible?
It would certainly save a lot of manual typing.

Leo,

The only way to do this is to run the image through an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program
to convert the image to a text (ASCII) file. Two that I use are Cuneiform and ABBY Fine Reader.
You can Google OCR for more.

[LegacyUG] Adopted Children

2007-07-29 Thread Evan Henderson
Why do adopted children whose relationship is shown as adopted in the child
status and whose date of birth is before the marriage date of their adopted
parents still show up as an error? Birthdate is before the marriage date of
Parents. I know I can exclude them from the error, but can't this be fixed
in Legacy 7? Why doesn't the error finding mechanism recognize these kids
are adopted?

Re: [LegacyUG] How do I delete Child Status?

2007-07-29 Thread Mary Young
"Deleting Child Status" means removing it from the List for
everyone,it would not be available for any child.
If you only want to "remove child status" for one instance -
Select the appropriate set of parents in Family View. Then right-click
on the child, click "Children's Settings", and click the down-arrow
beside "Child Status" to open the drop-down list.
The first entry in the list is *blank*. Selecting the blank entry
replaces/removes the previously selected child status.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures

2007-07-29 Thread GeoSci
I save the scanned documents as images. I have yet to see an OCR program
that is both affordable and works. For most - it takes so long to correct
what the program thinks it saw - incorrectly - you could have typed the
entire thing in by hand. And the image can be enlarged to make it readable
for older relatives (or me).

Re: [LegacyUG] Adopted Children

2007-07-29 Thread Mitch Mackrory
Matt,

I would think that if this was not shown as an error then no error would be
shown for a birth that was, say 1,000 years, prior to the marriage date and
that would clearly be in error. I suspect more births occur after the
marriage even for adoptions and to me it makes sense to have it show an
error for you to check. You can then choose to exclude this once you have
checked.

No software can be all things to all users. I think the way it is set up
now is best for most users.

Cheers, Mitch

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures

2007-07-29 Thread Mitch Mackrory
Leo,

Apologies for my last answer in Rich text format (it's my default)!

If you have a scanner, you probably have an option to convert the
scanned document into text as it is scanned. I need to do this on
"high quality" scan if the document is not very clear but it is a
great time saver. You will need to proof read the created text but
that is far faster than my typing.

Cheers, Mitch

2007-07-29 Thread Karma J. Stout

I put all my data on a memory stick (nerd stick) and now I am planning a

trip to Salt Lake CityGerda

The FHL has a program called "Genviewer" which will read a "Legacy Gedcom".
Genviewer will not allow you to add information. When you create your Gedcom
be sure it is a "Legacy Gedcom" or you will not be able to view all of your
information. From the FHL desktop click on "Records Manager"

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures

2007-07-29 Thread Pat H
I have ScanSoft Omnipage Pro 15 and it converts many old documents that I've
scanned into my computer quite accurately. Then I copy the conversion (I
use Word Perfect) as unformatted text, make any additional corrections and
save it to a file or copy it into Legacy notes -- or sometimes I just copy
it directly into Legacy notes.

As you go along you are training it to recognize characters better.

Pat

Hi Everyone, I am still working on my pictures that I have in my Legacy
Data File. I really appreciated all your responses on how to convert my
BMP files to JPG files.
I have another question that I hope someone can help me out with, some of
the BMP files that I have in my program are scanned images of death
notices that I found in local newspapers, what I would like to be able to
do is to highlight the write-up on these BMP or JPG files, then copy and
paste the information into either the death notes field or in the notes
section of death notice event that I add to the person who has died, is
this possible? It would certainly save a lot of manual typing.

RE: [LegacyUG] Memory Stick - Salt Lake City

2007-07-29 Thread Valeris Garton
I was there in 2005 and scanned all my research on to a CD.

The easiest way to carry your information around with you is on a PDA.

Regards from Valerie in sunny Sydney.
Researching: BEDDY, CULLODEN, DYAS and ROWAN in Dublin, Wicklow &
Wexford - please ???

Again, make sure you know what you want before you go so you do not
waste your time, unless you live close by and have plenty of time to
kill.
