Have you tried AllChar, a free program? It works for my German

Thanks for your comments. The problem I have is in trying to insert
the name of Czech surnames and towns that use particular diacritical
characters. I installed a Czech font and customized the Legacy
settings to use that font, but Legacy still gives me the spurious
characters in liew of the correct ones.

I use Open Office and it has a function to insert special
characters. I find the one I want then cut and paste it in the
notes. It seems to work so far. If it still displays spurious
characters you are probably out of luck until they are able to
completely re-program Legacy from the ground up.

I agree - I would not put these WorldConnect sources on the internet - I
simply use them as little clues for primary research, and source them for
my own usage, or occasionally share them with a fellow researcher on the
same line. I never really reference them as a serious source, nor would I
endorse putting anyone's email address on the internet without permission.

Good points to make - thanks for the clarification.

I have actually gone so far as to create a Master Source as follows:
TITLE: Hearsay and random droppings,
PUBLICATION FACTS: unverified and often unattributed data obtained from
on-line meanderings. May be imbedded in forum postings, public family
trees, etc.

I will usually include a bit of info in the Detail Citation on where the
stuff was found. Once I have verified the info this entry is deleted and
replaced with the primary source. Sometimes, if the work was well
attributed, I will create a source for the history or posting in order
to credit the work of the author.

Legacy does not support Unicode which you need to do these characters.
Few Genealogy programs do at this point which is dissappointing. In
theory you could open the able in Access and enter the unicode there
but it will appear odd in Legacy.

Lisa,

It is not possible to change the font colour from within Legacy but this is
not your real problem.

How are you using the Graphics Options to get your background colour? Since
you are using Use Solid Colour then you need to click on the coloured box
on the same line to change colour. The Blog on my web site (address below)
gives full details of all the options available and how to access them.

the web page displays black, which of course makes the black test

Would someone show me an example of how you source a U.S. Census item.
 More
specifically, I have a lot of ancestors who lived in the same county.
Actually, I have ancestors families who are on the same census page. I'm
really uncertain if I would, say for example, make more than one 1860
 source
in my master source list if I have more than one ancestor in the same
county, or even the same census page. Also, if each one is a separate
source, do you list the ancestor's name first so you can keep them apart?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me on this.

Re: [LegacyUG] Eastern European Font in Legacy 6 - ANSWER

2007-08-10 Thread Gene Wheeler
Through a source on another Forum, I have learned the following from
Ken McGinnis:

The RichText box control we use for notes supports Unicode. The
regular text box, label control, frame control and a few others do
not support Unicode at this time.

My source says This explains why the data is what it is in Legacy. I
know that upgrading Legacy to Unicode is high on the wish list for
the developers, but it is not going to happen in L7 as it involves a
massive re-write of the product.

Guess I'm stuck for now. In the interests of genealogical accuracy,
I sure hope Legacy fixes this problem someday soon.

RE: [LegacyUG] Printing ToDos as a Log or List AND Spam Deluge

Thanks Susan,

On another note, since joining this list my Spam Load has increased

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Printing ToDos as a Log or List

Hi Denise,

Yes, you can go to Reports - Books/Other - To-Do Report. I print out my
to-dos by printing with a Sort Order. I choose to print by Locality, then
task type, then Task Name. This way when I go to a certain town, I have all
the to-do items listed together. (Of course, you have to have been adding
Locations when you originally wrote your To-do item!)

Now, if you have been doing a Category Type that equals your Source type,
you could sort by Category. Just check the Sort Order for all the other
possible options.

If you want to do reports by Surname, you will want to either Tag those
people together, or do a focus group, then print the report just for those
individuals - select Record Selection - Tasks tied to Individuals (and
select the correct group).

You may want to do all your to-do items in a PDF-viewable report first, to
make sure everything has been given a category, location, or what-not. You
can fix them in your family file as you go through the report, and then when
all is fixed, generate the report(s) you need.

I hope these ideas help.

Susan

RE: [LegacyUG] Printing ToDos as a Log or List AND Spam Deluge

2007-08-10 Thread ronald ferguson

Susan,

This is quite possible, as in common with all public mailing lists our
emails are picked up by search engines and hence so are the email addresses.
Which is why on mailing lists one should never use one's main email address
(and one of the reasons why I use a web mail address)

Thanks Susan,

On another note, since joining this list my Spam Load has increased
tremendously. Are these events related?

Best, Denise

I notice that some genealogy websites publish the email address but
substitute the word at for the @, which is supposed to make it more
difficult for spammers. As in johndoeataol.com.

I am in the process of removing e-mail addresses from my sources for
my Web site and Rootsweb database. I show the names of people who
e-mail me as the source and put their e-mail addresses in publication
facts. I have tested putting the e-mail address in double brackets,
and it appears to me that the double brackets remove the address from
Gedcoms and reports.

Re: [LegacyUG] Printing ToDos as a Log or List AND Spam Deluge

2007-08-10 Thread Susan Daily
Hi Denise,
As Ron says, email addresses do get harvested from mailing lists. But
Legacy does a good job of removing them before they get archived on
the web.

My GMAIL program saves everyone's email address in a contact list when
I receive an email. Now I am diligent about not opening up
virus-suspect emails, however, there are other new users who aren't so
knowledgeable, so it is possible that your email address gets picked
up when a hacker breaks into the PCs of these other users who don't
have firewalls, anti-spyware, or anti-virus software installed.

So since you will never be able to beat them, all you can do is create
a new email address for public (genealogy) use. That's why I love my
GMAIL account, and am grateful to the LUG user who sent me the info
way back when...

And another comment for the list - trying to hide an email address
by using the words at and dot don't work, as email harvesters have
algorithms to pick up those variations.

Re: [LegacyUG] Black Background on Web Pages

2007-08-10 Thread Lisa Young
I thought I indicated that I did select the color. The little box that
says Color ... displays the color I selected, which is a tan color.
Your blog said you cannot change the background color on pedigree
changes, which seems so strange. Does that mean that you have to use a
graphic background on pedigree pages???

ronald ferguson wrote:

Lisa,

It is not possible to change the font colour from within Legacy but this
is not your real problem.

How are you using the Graphics Options to get your background colour?
Since you are using Use Solid Colour then you need to click on the
coloured box on the same line to change colour. The Blog on my web site
(address below) gives full details of all the options available and how
to access them.

I'm am testing out some families in the web page creator. On the
Graphics Tab, I chose the option for Use a Solid Color and chose a
tan color. But the web page displays black, which of course makes the
black test invisible. I don't see any option to change text color. How
come the background is not the same color as I chose in the options?
This happens whether I view it in Firefox or IE6.

[LegacyUG] GenSmarts

2007-08-10 Thread Phil Hawkins

I want GenSmarts to analyse a search list from my Legacy file
I put very specific search criteria into the search and had Legacy
produce a list

It is actually a list of those who might have served in WW1 and possible
be on the British Pension Records

I want Gensmarts to analyse it but cannot get it to look at the list

The list will not save as a Gedcom or Legacy file so I cannot open it as
a new file (The list is of unconnected individuals - at least not

directly)

Also on a related subject, when I display the list in Legacy to do a
manual analysis, there does not appear to be a way to mark the persons
as having been checked. I tried to tag them from the list but could not
do so.
This will mean I must open every individual and tag them in Family view
after doing the check, so as to know whom I have checked against the records

Any suggestions folks?
Regards
Phil

Re: [LegacyUG]email addresses on websites

2007-08-10 Thread hwedhlor
Substituting at for @ only works on the dumb spammers. All the others
have taught their bots to read. Fortunately they haven't taught them to
read graphics yet, so entering your e-mail address as a graphic image
works well. For now. Eventually they'll figure those out as well,
probably with code that converts imaged text into actual text, much as
Optical Character Reader software does for us all. Then we'll have to
encode our e-mail addresses on websites, leaving only a hotspot for
readers to click on.
