Re: [LegacyUG] Child status menu is blank

2007-08-16 Thread Richard Van Wasshnova

Hi Cathy,

Your suggestion sounded like it might work. I've already moved on with my
Legacy.fdb export/import file but I went back to the old, (yesterday),
corrupt file and tried importing CS defaults and also from repaired file and
neither worked.

  (See more reply interspersed below)

- Original Message -
From: Cathy [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Richard,

You could try resetting the Child Status List by importing the Defaults
When in the Master Child status list
Options button
Import
tick Child Status and then the Import Defaults button.
I would think that would have the same effect as exporting to a new family
file - which isn't something to do lightly as you lose created and modifed
date data, imported tags are attached to everyone rather than those who
you really have imported etc.

Please tell me how to see imported tags. I added 5 Individuals since last
import, (last one is FRANKLIN STEIN ;-) ). I can see created date and
modified date, mostly yesterday just a few today.

I had to reset ancestor colors, set direct line and set relationships and
lost TO-DO list. The majority would alredy show as imported anyway even
though I entered myself in another program.

If you are exporting your whole file, you don't have to create a new
family file first. You just choose in the File - Export to Legacy file to
export all records.

That is how I did it.

Check/Repair includes compress Family File as the final step so your
Family File is often smaller after doing a Check/Repair.

Cathy

Thanks for the suggestions.

RE: [LegacyUG] County without city

Mary,

Places should be recorded by smallest jurisdiction to largest, starting

If you know the hospital where someone was born, do not record it here. Any

place levels) or the locality does not have one, you would leave it out but
add the comma and space: Hendersonville, , North Carolina or Vancouver, ,

j. Some individuals put hospital, cemetery, or other names in the place.
However, it is
recommended to put these names in sources, notes, custom events, or
attributes instead5.
k. Sometimes, especially when dealing with rural areas, you may find a

Especially when the location is not in a town or city, it is okay to include

Hi Valerie,

I only enter the age at death in the Source Detail if my source gave
the age at death.

If that's the only information I have for birth, I calculate a birth
date and use the death source as the source for birth.
I indicate that it is a calculated date by using the prefix Cal for
calculated. Others will use Abt or Est. I use Abt for vaguer source
information and Est when it is a guess based on other information.

Legacy will calculate the age at death and you can opt to include
that in Reports - perhaps only some of them. Check the Report
options. This Legacy calculated age is also shown on the Individual
Information Screen within Legacy at the end of the Death line. You can
choose to add an Age at Death column on the Index View.

[LegacyUG] Imported tags (was Child status menu is blank)

2007-08-16 Thread Cathy

Hi Richard,

You can't see the imported tag (I guess you could in Access) but you
can Search for those who are tagged this way - In the Detailed Search
look for Imported in the Where to look list.

You can also delete it. Tools Menu - Clear Imported Tags

It's useful if you import a gedcom and want to keep track of that
group - but only useful if you've cleared the tag before the import
so only those in the last import have it.

Those who are manually added of course don't have it as they haven't
been imported.

You can get a list of those added recently by searching on the added date.

Did you lose all To Dos or only General To Dos as you didn't check
that box on the export screen?

[LegacyUG] Legacy crashes if I don't have the internet

RE: [LegacyUG] County without city

2007-08-16 Thread Paul A.
I replied offline as I do not think this tone of the messages should be on
here. However, the older genealogists should be teaching the newer ones the
correct way to do things so that they become historians and genealogists
rather than name collectors with no regard for standards.

The wonderful thing about Legacy is that it defaults to the correct
standards many times but is also diverse enough to allow people to make
changes. I don't think those changes were meant to have people disregard
the standards and the quality of past historians' works by their adhering to
such accepted standards.

Thank you.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I wish I had thought of
Richard's idea to move my USR settings away, as there was no
possibility of getting the internet. (I even brought the laptop to the

I've just made the change here at home. I'm guessing it may have

[LegacyUG] Finding first names associated with a single surname in the index

2007-08-16 Thread Gail Nestor
I've been wondering about this for a while

I have almost 1,000 individuals with a single surname in my database
and I would like to be able to find one at the end of the list without
having to scroll through all the first names associated with that
surname. I know that I could sort by first name instead, but
sometimes I need to review several first names within a surname to
find the right one.

Is there a way to selectively jump to a certain first name associated
with a single surname?

Thanks for your advice on this!

Re: [LegacyUG] Finding first names associated with a single surname in the index

2007-08-16 Thread Susan Daily
I don't think so Gail, but you could do this for names in the second
part of the alphabet - my first name comes near the end of the
Cullivans, so I enter CULM instead of CULL to jump to the end of the
list, and scroll up.

Not ideal, but just another trick.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Alphabetizing Names

Hello,

I have a number of European individuals in my database that have surnames
that contain an article or suffix is usually written in lower case.

Some examples are:

de Argies
de Flandre
de Maure
de Moleyns
de Reynier
la Pierre
lo Judas
van Vorhees
von Arnstein
von Bickenbach
von Friesen

I would like these names to alphabetize by the first letter of the main
part of the name rather than the first letter. A DOS genealogy program I
had years ago called _Family Roots_ alphabetized by first Capital letter
rather than first letter so the list looked like this:

de Argies
von Arnstein
von Bickenbach
von Friesen
lo Judas
de Maure
de Moleyns
la Pierre
de Reynier
van Vorhees

Since I imported much of my data from that program I have been reworking
the names. I put the article in the first name field so now I have people
with first names like 'Frederick van' and 'Gloria lo'.

I've seen many lists of surnames on the Web and in books alphabetized this
way so I don't think it's very unusual but I've also seen lists,
particularly German databases made with Legacy that have an overabundance
of names starting with 'V'. See for example:
http://ahnen.vorfahrensuche.com/

Is there any way to alphabetize this way? Or are there any plans to add it
to the program, perhaps as an option.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Bill Stone

[LegacyUG] Legacy stops responding when trying to create a Problem Report

2007-08-16 Thread Christine Pearce
I am a new user (Version 6.0.0.155) and have never been unable to create a
Problem Report. Every time I try, Legacy stops responding and the programme
shuts down. Sometimes the status bar stops at points other than 100%
complete and stops responding, and other times the status bar gets to 100%
complete but stops responding when I press Preview.

I have tried File Maintenance (no problems found), reinstalling Legacy,
cleaned the registry, reinstalled Windows XP and Legacy, and performed a
virus check (none found) - all actions were to no avail.

I am running Windows XP Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Legacy is installed on
my laptop C drive, and my files are on a network which I access via the
Desktop. Got gobs of disk space and memory on both machines. This is the
only programme that's giving me a headache.

Can someone urgently respond with suggestions?

Cheers,
Christine

Karl,

Having also been in software development, albeit some years ago, I too am a
little cautious about downloading updates and usually wait a week or two to
see other users comments. I do make exceptions though eg. when I find on
reading the changes that there is something I have an immediate use for, and
when I knowingly download a beta version because it contains facilities
which I regularly use. (hint to Legacy - I would be delighted to help in
testing a revision of the html web pages!)

Having said that I have not really found any serious problems with the
Legacy Updates, certainly nothing that has ruined my work.

Re: [LegacyUG] Soliciting Opinions

Susan -

I am with you although I have found far fewer problems with Legacy
upgrades than upgrades to most of the other software programs I use.

I also have not and will not download IE 7 and there is a simple reason.
Some websites I use quite frequently are done with activex which IE 7
many times will not support or have older certificates from programs
that are no longer supported. Since the certificates are not being
renewed IE 7 will not run those portions of those websites and does not
offer you the option of okaying the certificate.

Odd how activex was at one time the be-all and end-all for Microsoft and
now they are shooting the site developers they urged to use it right in
the foot.

The city of the newspaper publication is also what I put in my event
places too. However, one caveat is that if you have a web site which
produces geocoded maps, it might appear like the event itself occured
in that place.

For example see the map down at the bottom of this page:
http://www.roots2buds.net/getperson.php?personID=I289tree=nestor.

This ancestor did not live in Atlanta, GA. He lived many miles away
in Decatur County, GA. However, his news made it to a regional paper.
It could be misleading if someone didn't read carefully and thought
that he migrated.

I still don't think I'll change the event location, but it's something
to consider...

Susan,

I take it you didn't send this from your laptop!

I think you need to go to the Legacy Home Tab, then Options at the top right

select Options again and check connect only when a link is clicked. If this
is the problem it is not connected with the latest version - it's always
been there!

Have a good day.

Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2007 09:34:55 -0500

This is a new error since I downloaded the latest Legacy, and it is
troublesome. I am trying to use my laptop at the library, and I have
no internet service. When I run Legacy, I get a pop up message that
says Web page unavailable while offline To view the page, click
Connect. There are two buttons, Connect and Stay Offline, but I just
get an hourglass, and cannot select either button. Legacy won't load,
and I have to use task manager to close it.

Is this something with the latest version, or is it something to do
with my internet explorer options? Please help - I'm here for four
hours, with nothing else to do except enter data in my Legacy file!!

Thank you,
Susan Daily

Re: [LegacyUG] Creating events

That is actually one of the reasons I *do* use the place of newspaper
publication, even if it is maybe far way. That way the person will show
up when I do a Show List for the place of the obit publication. If the
obit got published there, there may be other ties or other news I should
look for in a location that might otherwise not be attached to the
individual. The same applies to the people mentioned in the obit.

This ancestor did not live in Atlanta, GA. He lived many miles away

It could be misleading if someone didn't read carefully and thought
that he migrated.

I still don't think I'll change the event location, but it's something

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Question...

2007-08-16 Thread Gail Nestor
I'd like to add a comment here too. I also bought my copy of Mills'
_Evidence Explained_ and started to consider updating all my sources
in Legacy. However, I quickly decided it's best to wait and see how
Legacy 7's sourcing templates pan out. I have high hopes!

One problem is that Mills' formulas often embed what I would consider
citation detail data in a citation within elements of master
source data.

For example, she recommends adding an accessed date to web site data
so the reader will know how long ago the site was viewed. This makes
good sense. However, she has data on either side of it that I would
want to include in my master source. Legacy 6 does not allow for
mixing these components for the final output.

Another example which is tricky to implement is sourcing for e-mail
correspondence. She suggests using the following components in a
first reference note (in this order, and as available): writer,
writer's location, writer's contact information, recipient, item type,
record date, subject line, file, research series, collection,
researcher and contact information.

Currently, I have created a master source called Personal
Correspondence and all of the above information is currently listed
in the citation detail for all e-mails I have received over the years.
I tried to get Legacy 6 to suppress the words Personal
Correspondence in the source output so that just the above
information would print, but I couldn't get it to work the way I
wanted.

First I left the words Personal Correspondence in the Source List
Name field, but I blanked out the same words in the Title field of the
Master Source. When I viewed the Show Source using Print Options
window, the words Personal Correspondence still showed up
(presumably pulling from the Source List Name field since the Title
field was not blank).

Then I typed the word test in the Title field and the test then
appeared in the Show Source using Print Options window in lieu of
Personal Correspondence from the Source List Name.

Therefore, it seems that the output for printing defaults to the
Source List Name if the Title field is blank. I finally gave up and
decided that revamping my sources needed to wait in hopes that Legacy
7's templates will resolve some of these issues.

I realize that Mills wrote her book more with a person publishing on
paper in mind and not as much for the person using a database.
Frankly, I'm sure it's hard to accommodate the needs of both at the
same time! However, I am trying my best to make it work for both
worlds.

I welcome any thoughts or suggestions on the above example. In the
mean time, I am happy to wait a couple of months to see what sourcing
goodies Legacy 7 has in store!

nothing in Mills about recording the film copy number in the source
citation. Maybe that's something to consider. Of course, I'm only on p. 50

 of it.

 Very interesting comment. Thanks.

Some years ago I ordered a census film from the FHL. The names on the
page I needed were obliterated. On another occassion, I was at the
Sacramento State Library where I looked at the same film. The page I
needed was beautiful and clear. I not only record the repository, but
also the line number, household number, and film details.

Well, I sort of agree with you, but I'm the type who really like to
color in the lines! Also, I subscribe to the APG list and have
already posed a few questions to Ms. Mills about a couple of the

much detail!

Everyone likes to say that it's more of an art, but when it gets down

there's a better or more correct way than the one I'm currently using.

There are times when I know I'm going to use poetic license on my

[LegacyUG] Source from the beginning (was Creating events)

2007-08-16 Thread Cathy

Hi Dwight and others,

Sourcing in Legacy is so much easier if you source as you add your data.
Load the source you are using into the Source Clipboard (even if that
source is your own knowledge or recollection) and then you can source
with a simple click.
If you are held up on sourcing because you can't sort out all the
details of a Master Source, enter it any way. You can come back and
edit it later with the Publication details and the precise title or author.

Take time out and learn the basics of sourcing.

I'm not a developer but have been a user from the beginning of

offering complete new packages to the process of unbundling and
offering upgrade fixes, it only make sense to wait.

Report
Importance: High

Cheers,
Christine

Re: [LegacyUG] Soliciting Opinions

2007-08-16 Thread Cathy

Hi Karl,

Legacy updates include bug fixes and new features - sometimes big new
features that you would only expect with a new version rather than a
free update. If you don't update periodically you miss out on both of these.

It can be a good idea to wait for a few days before updating.
Sometimes a bug creeps into the update and there is a flurry of
updates over a couple of days to sort it out. Sometimes there is a
new bug that affects an area of the program that is important to you
but isn't critical which isn't fixed for awhile. For this, it can
help to download and keep the full installation of a version you're
happy with and then, if you find the new update has a problem that
affects you, you can always go back to that older version.
