Re: [LegacyUG] Individuals with More than One Set of Parents

2007-09-13 Thread Bruce Jones
Regarding the child showing up twice. I think it is because it is
showing the relationship to two parents, full to Parent 1 & 1/2 to
parent 2. You can turn off the display if you want, but I don't think
that the duplication shows on any actual reports, just on the screen
display on the Family Tab.

If you are using Windows, you can make a copy of the database file and
change the attribute to read only. You can also do this to your main file,
but you will have to remember to undo it before you load Legacy to make

If you burn a copy of your family tree file onto a cd and give that
to the kids, they will be unable to make any changes to the file. As
part of the burning process, Legacy automatically sets a read only
attribute on the file that can only be removed by copying it to a
hard drive and resetting it there.
Consider it a backup..

I think you'll find that Legacy needs to have write access to the
database in order to open it. So setting it read-only and using Legacy

Well, as you say, we'll just have to wait for Leg 7 (wait, hope, and pray)!

Really, we need to be able to sort sources much in the same way a library

has made doing citations enormously more complicated!!

Hi Pat, I think (and hope) the full/formal bibliography feature will
be coming with v7, so help will be on the way. With v6, though, there
is no way I have found to do a formal bibliography other than
exporting the data to an external program and working on it there.

It would be great if the new sourcing templates allowed you to sort
first by "source type." For now, I use the Source List Name field
(the one not printed in the output) to list a source type first and
then give a name for it. However, the source lists still prints with
comma as separators instead of periods and does not sort the way a
standard bibliography would.

The term "source type" can also be confusing. Would that be book vs.
media, original court record vs. microfilm at archives, etc? We
almost need two fields, one for media type and another for source
type. Sometimes I have two distinct sources in Legacy for a single
cemetery: one for the photo I took while visiting and another for the
entries I found in an online database at the same cemetery (when I
forgot to take the photo during the visit). To me, they are the same
source type (i.e. cemetery), but different media types (visit or photo
vs. database).

This whole discussion may not be needed for long, though, with v7
coming out some time this year.

The sources are grouped in alphabetical order by this "nickname."

That is, the sources are not grouped by type; and then alphabetized by

case.

So my question is how DO I get to a view of sources in a standard form --
in

other words, how do I see what the bibliography will look like (I
assuming entries WILL be in a standard form) if I do a Legacy "book"?

Does this make sense? I'm afraid I'm overlooking something that is VERY

I have tried unlinking the individuals from all the unknowns in the parent

If anyone understands what I am trying to say and can advise how to fix

It means on a gedcom I end up with more individuals than families.

Re: [LegacyUG] Chart printing

2007-09-13 Thread John Magyari
For a Family Reunion's it's great to be able to print an All-In-One
Chart which contains a subset of your complete database.

First create a gedcom which is a subset of your database. (This is the
hardest part, selecting the right multiple ancestors, and selecting
them and their descendants.)

Then use Genbox or Family Tree Maker to create a tree with everyone
included. An All-In-One Chart

It's great to see a tree of ancestors for those attending a family reunion.

I like the idea of creating a tree based on blood relatives, it would
sure be less painful than the process I go through now.

A Tree Chart of Blood Relatives would probably be used more often than
the All In One Charts.

I don't think I've seen a Tree Chart of Blood Relatives in anyone's
product out there yet, does anyone know if anyone has done this?

If I had only done ancestor chart, only her direct line would be

would have to get charts for all her descendants - a huge duplication
of effor. An all blood relations chart was fantastic.

Not many programmes have this, and the ones that do can be clunky.

Foxy - putting my bid in for an all blood relations chart.

Original Message Follows

I don't think most people would ever want to print a chart with
everyone in

their database.. I for one have over 30,000 people in my database and a
chart for everyone would probably be a block long - how do you print that
and what would you do with it if you had it?

Most people will probably only print a few generations of ancestors
and/or
descendants, say 5 to 10 and place them in a frame to hang on the
wall. If

I would try to print say 15 generations of all ancestors, my chart would
probably exceed 100 pages. Most fan type charts for practical
purposes are
normally limited by the user to about 5-7 generations, otherwise, you
cannot

read the print or it gets too large to print economically.

You might want to print a direct line ancestry chart which if you
could get
5 generations per page, then a 25 generation ancestry chart would only
be 5
pages - that would be ok. I have printed out over 100 generations
like that

and it is basically 2 people per generation.

In Legacy 6, you can create a compact form of ancestors charts (Ancestor
Chart) that is very useful for determining what lines of ancestors
that you
need to do more research on. You can start with the youngest person
in your
database for your family and create say 15 generations -- preview it
first
before you sent it to a printer - you may not want to print that many
pages.

I would suggest you try that 1st and see if that meets your needs.

If you use photoshop, you can put the sourcing in the "info" - if you pass
the photo on to a fellow photoshop user, it will convey (I believe some
other programs may read it, as well.) However, many people espouse the view
that you should attach a source to the bottom of the photo, by extending the
"canvas" and entering the full source in text.

I have not done this, but am considering it - after I do the million and one

2) This question rather puzzles me. On the Source Clipboard there is a
Picture Icon, clicking that enables you to attach a picture(s) which stay
attached when the Sourced is linked to somebody else.

3) Copying does not affect the quality but continual editing and saving

"Illinois, Hamilton - Yesterdays of Hamilton Co", etc)

I like being able to scroll to HR Walker and see most of his individual
(probably, therefore, more important sources).

For me the combination of the three works. It may not be consistent, but
since the "nicknames" are just for personal usage, it doesn't matter much.

[LegacyUG] Pocket Genealogist 3.0

2007-09-13 Thread Jim Keener
Does anyone know if Pocket Genealogist 3.0 works with a Palm Operating
System, or is this product only for Pocket PC system? If so, is the Gedstar
Pro simply a lower priced product? I've made handheld software purchases
before, only to be disappointed later.

I have a Palm Lifedrive and the Pocket Genealogist 3.0 looks great.

Thanks,

Jim

2007-09-13 Thread Robert Carneal USA
Sorry, Jim, Pocket Genealogist is a Pocket Windows system application.
Pocket Genealogist *is* a great application; I take it everywhere.

You probably have this already, but if not, here is the Pocket
Genealogist website (Northern Hills).

http://northernhillssoftware.com/

Tech support for Pocket Genealogist is wonderful, usually very fast turn
around, and they stick with you until the problem is solved.

Re: [LegacyUG] Adopted Daughter unmarried mother

2007-09-13 Thread Ron Taylor
Yes...I always use that "Just leave it blank" setting. The problem is a
marriage record, which is necessary to connect a child to a parent, always
has slots for 2 spouses but in my special case there will never be a second
spouse because this single woman adopted a daughter. What Legacy needs is a
flag in the marriage record to indicate that children are connected to only
one parent and will never be connected to 2 parents because the second
parent is not unknown but never existed.

Thanks for your comment.

Ron, do you also check "Just leave it blank" instead of "Unknown"?

Options > Customise > Data Format > Word for Blank Records > (Just
leave it blank.)

It works well for Legacy, but add-ons like Legacy Charting Companion
put in "Unknown" if the person field is blank for MRINs.
Cheers
Tracy

[LegacyUG] attaching .pdf files instead of photo

2007-09-13 Thread Pat Hickin
I am very confused. I thought we were supposed to attach a .pdf file (as
opposed to a picture) in Legacy in the following manner.

Save the .pdf to a folder.
In Legacy click on the picture icon>click on Sound>
Browse to the folder that has the .pdf file
To find it, click on All files
Open it
Fill in Legacy caption info etc.
click OK

It displays a picture that says "Sound"!!
So how do I vision the .pdf??

Am I utterly confused?

[LegacyUG] a couple of frustrations - Tool tips not sticking and etc

2007-09-13 Thread June McDonald
While I am in an asking mood abt things not sticking, could sks also tell me
why, frequently, my Display Tool Tips (from the General page of Customise)
don't stick. I have the option checked. It sticks for a while and then it
has gone agn. It is nothing to do with closing and opening Legacy because it
happens when it has been open for a while.

Another question along these lines. So often, more often that not, when I
close Legacy it comes up with 'Programme Not Responding' and I have to go
thru all that rigmarole. They both have been like it since the beginning of
my installing V6 and because I have been able to live with them I have never
got around to asking abt it. I had intended to wait until V7 comes out to
see if it would make any difference but today ,apparently, my patience has
run out!! Many tks for any help.
