Michele:

My long location would look like this:

 Purvis, Lamar Co, Mississippi, USA

My short location would be:

 Purvis,,MS, USA

The location without a town, I would use:

, Lamar Co, Mississippi, USA

The short location would be:

, Lamar Co, MS, USA

Remember that you would only use the short location in places where
you have limited room -- like Charts.

I am still sitting here cleaning my files up :) On the locations is it ok
 to do this...

 Purvis, Lamar, Mississippi, USA

and then for a short location
 Purvis, Lamar Co, MS

So that is the way it will print on the reports?

And how about this example which doesn't have a town...

 , Lamar, Mississippi, USA

 short location
Lamar, Co, MS (without the leading comma)

This would really clean up the output on the reports and I would still have
my locations entered in the correct format.

Re: [LegacyUG] One last question about place names

I have made it ', Dorchester County, Maryland Colony,
British North America' because it sorts all the
Marylands together in the sorting options, instead of
clumping all the 'Colony of' together. Personal
choice, probably not according to the 'rules'. I used
to use 'America' but went with the style mentioned by
my cousins from the British Empire on this list. That
also made the Canadian and Caribean locations group
together, as they were treated at times as 'The
Colonies'.

Hi Barbara
You're looking for the Quoted Name feature.

Instead of entering
May Elizabeth (Mayme) Scruggs
(To convert: Use Search and Replace on the Given Names to change ( to
and then ) to )

Enter given names
May Elizabeth Mayme

The advantage of this entry style over adding it to the AKAs is that
Legacy can pick up the Quoted Name in Narrative.
In the Report Options, on the Format Tab, you'll find options three
options for how names appear in reports.
1) remove Quoted name - so that when the whole name is given you get May
Elizabeth Scruggs

2) use quoted name in narrative
so that it will read
May Elizabeth Scruggs was born on
Mayme married ...
3) use full given names in narrative
so that it will read
May Elizabeth Scruggs was born on
May Elizabeth married ...

Obviously you only choose one of 2 or 3.

In Event Sentences and Report Titles, where you choose to use [FirstName]
or [FirstHeShe] if you check Use quoted name in narrative, these codes
pick up the Quoted Name.

I would create CensusFrench or CensusDanish, or use
the 'foreign word' as the Event name. Then it will
print the sentence you created in the language you
wish. You could also use duplicates in various
languages to print the data in various matched
versions. If you are working in only one language (not
an English version) It should work when added to th
Legacy list, but if you are working in multple
languages you should create Event types and Events in
that/those ones.

Somewhat familiar with IntelliShare. My sister and I use the same database,
doing a merge several times a year. It is marvelous for reducing the confusion
and effort of merging files from another Legacy file.

The IntelliShare number is internal to Legacy, automatic,
behind-the-scenes. I don't think there's any way of seeing it unless you know
Access. I think
it is unique to Legacy and no other gene database.

To my knowledge, it is not exported with a Gedcom, only with Legacy. And it
stays with each person record, whether you export your entire file or only a
subset.

I don't think it has any intelligent information about multimedia. Rather,
its purpose is to recognize that John Doe in one file = John Doe in
another file, even if there has been a name change, parents change, etc.

 Hi Jim,

Legacy provides a place for the town information of a location - the
Place fields. These are stored in the Master Location list.
It also provides a place for the specific street address/institution
name etc - the Address. You can add an address for any or all events
as well as a current residence address - so they can be confusing.

More confusing is that when you type in the Name field of an Address,
it doesn't suggest from the existing Master Address list. When you
start typing in a location in the place fields, you do get
suggestions from the Master Location list.
This difference in the way it operates means that it is very easy to
duplicate addresses. To avoid duplicates, you need to click the
Address List button and choose the one you want from there.

Having said all that, I add the address bit to the location and
rarely use the Address fields except for the Current Residence Address.
I don't like the way the address prints in brackets after the
 location in reports.

I enter locations consistently from the smallest unit to the largest,
always ending with the country. I sort my Master Location list from
right to left so its easy to find all locations in the same town or
 state or whatever.

 Cheers,
 Cathy

Subject: [LegacyUG] Tagging a family

Dear Listers --

Once again I am unable to understand directions in Legacy Help.
(I am using Legacy Deluxe 6.0.0.155--28 July 2007 build -- because although
I have attempted to download the latest version, and click on download
UPDATE I am eventually taken to a Download Legacy 6.0 screen, which has no
options to download the update and I certainly do not want to download 6.0
again -- so I keep giving up on downloading the latest update.)

At any rate, I just imported a very small .gedcom (consisting of one couple
and their ten children -- no spouses of children) into my main database and
performed the necessary merges with no problems.

I do want to add a source to show that the mother's name and all the
children's names were found in the father's will. (I would have done this
in the .gedcom, but I didn't have the source, which was very complicated, in
the .gedcom -- just in my main database.)

So, I thought Aha, I will import the .gedcom and then use Advanced Tagging
and Advanced Sourcing to add the source to the Name field in the children's
names.

And SO after the import I checked the Name List and removed all tags from
the entire database, as I didn't need any old ones.

Then from the father's Family View screen I clicked on
Edit
Tag Records
(the Advanced Tagging window opened with the father's name in the
box)
Tag
Make changes on #4
Family
(the Spouse List for father's name window opened with the father's
name in the box)
I unchecked all the little boxes as I did not want to include any spouses,
etc.
There was NO WAY to save these choices so I clicked the X to close the
window.
I was now back at the Advanced Tagging window.
There was NO option saying Apply, Proceed, or Next, etc., so I
clicked Family (again, which took me back to the Spouse List AGAIN [with
some check marks I DID NOT WANT back in the boxes, so I unchecked them
AGAIN] and again clicked
X which took me back to the Advanced Tagging Window AGAIN so I clicked
Close (not seeing anything else to click on, see above).

Then to check to see whether the family had somehow gotten tagged,
I clicked
View
Names

and, contrary to what I wanted, NONE of that Family had ANY tags on Tag 4
(Tags 1,4, and 9 were shown) -- or anywhere else!

Can somebody please tell me what on earth I failed to do this time!!??

(Legacy Help simply says
A family is considered to be the selected individual and his or her
spouse(s) and all the children from the spouse(s). To tag (or untag) a
family, click the Family... button. The Spouse List for the current
individual appears. If this is not the individual you want to add, click
the Change button to the right of the name and select the desired person
from the Name List. If the individual has more than one spouse, you can
select one of them or all of them by clicking the appropriate button on the
right side.

I cannot see that it says anywhere in Help how to actually apply the tags!)

At any rate if someone can tell me how to actually tag a family I'll very
much appreciate it!! Thank you so much!

RE: [LegacyUG] Alternate names one more time

2007-11-23 Thread ronald ferguson

Michele,

In my view, without doubt.

a) Historically most women who marry use this name for longer than they use
their maiden names
b) It makes life much easier if you ever wish to search for a woman using her
married name as one can search on AKAs
c) I *always* use the titles eg Mr, Miss, Mrs against all names

There has been much correspondance on this quite recently.

The way that I do most of my Nicknames is as follows:

First middle name: Leroy Ervin

My data entry is:

Last Name: Chapman

There is an option in reports under the format tab in descendant
reports to Use quoted names for narratives. Legacy will then use the
full name once and then use the quoted name there after in your report

Hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] One last question about place names

Not British Colonies certainly. Maryland would probably do as the US address
structure only applies since independence as far as I know. After all, there
were plenty of other places which were British Colonies at that time of
which the various West Indies were probably the most important from an
economic point of view. After the sugar trade, the spices and textiles from
India and the far East were next in the pecking order with tobacco and
cotton fairly low in the priorities.

RE: [LegacyUG] Short place names

2007-11-23 Thread ronald ferguson

Michele,

Regarding the way in which a location prints in reports: one has the option of
using the long or short version. When I publish locations I always use the long
version as for eg. your Purvis, Lamar Co, MS would be meaningless to me in
the UK. I might guess that it is the USA, but if I didn't know better MS could
be Mississippi, Missouri or Massachusetts, and for all I know other places as
well.

Incidentally, for the time before the creation of USA, I use America. Whether
that is accurate or not I don't actually know, but we certainly didn't have
England or Great Britain as part of the Location/Address.

I am still sitting here cleaning my files up :) On the locations is it ok to
do this...

Purvis, Lamar, Mississippi, USA

and then for a short location

Purvis, Lamar Co, MS

So that is the way it will print on the reports?

And how about this example which doesn't have a town...

, Lamar, Mississippi, USA

short location

Lamar, Co, MS (without the leading comma)

This would really clean up the output on the reports and I would still have my
locations entered in the correct format.

Hi Barbara
You're looking for the Quoted Name feature.

Instead of entering
May Elizabeth (Mayme) Scruggs
(To convert: Use Search and Replace on the Given Names to change ( to
and then ) to )

Enter given names
May Elizabeth Mayme

The advantage of this entry style over adding it to the AKAs is that
Legacy can pick up the Quoted Name in Narrative.
In the Report Options, on the Format Tab, you'll find options three
options for how names appear in reports.
1) remove Quoted name - so that when the whole name is given you get May
Elizabeth Scruggs

2) use quoted name in narrative
so that it will read
May Elizabeth Scruggs was born on
Mayme married ...
3) use full given names in narrative
so that it will read
May Elizabeth Scruggs was born on
May Elizabeth married ...

Obviously you only choose one of 2 or 3.

In Event Sentences and Report Titles, where you choose to use [FirstName]
or [FirstHeShe] if you check Use quoted name in narrative, these codes
pick up the Quoted Name.

Michele,

I'd have to agree with Cathy there. As a near-neighbour (I'm Irish),
this is how I understand it:

a) England is that part of the island of Great Britain in the mid,
east and south, and nowhere else.

b) Great Britain (GB) is the island west of continental Europe
comprising Scotland, England and Wales.

c) The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) is
made up if the the island of Great Britain and that part of the island
of Ireland known as Northern Ireland.

d) The British Isles (a name which is often disputed by Irish people)
includes the two islands of Great Britain and Ireland.

A place in what we now call USA should *never* be considered part of
England, Great Britain, the United Kingdon or the British Isles. It
may however have been considered part of the British Empire, but how
you'd use that in an address, I wouldn't be sure.

The primary reason for this is because you would lose the flexibility
if you want to switch between ALL CAPS or mixed case. If you type in
mixed case, you have the option to display in ALL CAPS. If you type in
ALL CAPS, you don't have the option to display in mixed case.

Ah, well, that's fine because I don't want/need that flexibility!

Re: [LegacyUG] One last question about place names

2007-11-23 Thread Michele Lewis

So maybe this would sound better...
, Dorchester County, Colony of Maryland, British Colonies?

I am trying to format it correctly so that it will perform searches,
including IGI seaches correctly. I am just not sure what the correct term
would be.

I can't imagine it ever being correct.
England is a more or less defined piece of land. It didn't expand as the
British Empire grew.
Similarly Great Britain, although more difficult to define, hasn't ever
even included Ireland as I understand it.

Just because India was ruled by the British, would you list places there
as being in England or Great Britain?

That would depend on the time frame. Pre 1707 it would be ok- but post

How about this one,

, Dorchester County, Colony of Maryland, England?

Would putting England as the country be proper prior to the USA being
established?

Re: [LegacyUG] One last question about place names

2007-11-23 Thread Wayne Martell
That is incorrect ... British North America was a description, not an
administrative entity. Thus, Maryland (or Maryland Colony, if you wish) by
itself would be correct as would Upper Canada or Jamaica.

That
also made the Canadian and Caribean locations group
together, as they were treated at times as 'The
Colonies'.

Re: [LegacyUG] One last question about place names

2007-11-23 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I like it but I also have Spanish, French and Swedish
Colonial America, though they were not neccessarily
called those. I am thinking about changing to
Dorchester County, Maryland County, English North
America for the appropriate time periods. I already
had it as British North America, instead, but it is
getting easier with practice to split locations on a
before/after basis. Some dayI might getr it all right.
What will I do then (find more people?)

Re: [LegacyUG] Short place names

2007-11-23 Thread Susan Daily
I'd make one change:

And how about this example which doesn't have a town...
 , Lamar, Mississippi, USA
 short location
Lamar, Co, MS (without the leading comma)

Lamar Co., MS

I am now wishing there were TWO short location options! (Greedy, I
know.) I would like a Chart short locations (which would like the one
above) and one for Book short locations which would spell things out,
like Lamar County, Missippi (but no extra commas and no country).

Michele, you will need to really think about what your final output is
going to be. Will you always be doing charts, reports, or books? And
what will it look like when you print out the options you are putting
in now?

Good luck!
Susan

Do you think it is a good idea to put a woman's married name as an AKA for
searching purposes?

  Carolyn Corrine Simmons

  and then as an AKA
  Carolyn Corrine Crow
  Carolyn Crow

Yes please Susan, you run it. You are far more familiar with the best
setup.
What I had changed recently when we collected a few Spam messages was that
anyone new who subscribed, had to have their messages (when or if sent)
checked ie moderated (approved) before the message could be put up on the
list. This could continue until we decided that they should be
un-moderated.
All the spam that we have had so far has come from people who have
subscribed and then posted their messages. As far as I know, spam (or
anything else) cannot be listed unless the person has subscribed to the
mailing list. - a Yahoo rule?
That meant messages were checked, not subscribers. If they were spam then
the subscriber was banned before the message is put up on the list. We may
be aware of most people who subscribe but not always and I am not sure how
you would check them. But I bow to your superior experience.

I guess you will have to go in and re-edit the procedure.
Thanks again for doing this.
Judy
