RE: [LegacyUG] Burial Location Entry

2007-11-24 Thread ronald ferguson

Jim,

The way that Cathy suggests is exactly the method I use. Having said that, we
are both from outside the USA and I know I do not have much use for the
Geolocation facility. If you use this a lot you may find that it will not give
good results without temporarily changing the Location to that which suites
this facility.

For both of us, however, this is very much a minor disadvantage.

Thank you Cathy,

I've been reading my manual since my post, so your response is very helpful. I
think I've had it right in my file all along, but when I read some of the
posts, I became a little doubtful. Thanks again.

Hi Jim,

Legacy provides a place for the town information of a location - the
Place fields. These are stored in the Master Location list.
It also provides a place for the specific street address/institution
name etc - the Address. You can add an address for any or all events
as well as a current residence address - so they can be confusing.

More confusing is that when you type in the Name field of an Address,
it doesn't suggest from the existing Master Address list. When you
start typing in a location in the place fields, you do get
suggestions from the Master Location list.
This difference in the way it operates means that it is very easy to
duplicate addresses. To avoid duplicates, you need to click the
Address List button and choose the one you want from there.

Having said all that, I add the address bit to the location and
rarely use the Address fields except for the Current Residence Address.
I don't like the way the address prints in brackets after the
location in reports.

I enter locations consistently from the smallest unit to the largest,
always ending with the country. I sort my Master Location list from
right to left so its easy to find all locations in the same town or
state or whatever.

Cheers,
Cathy

ie putting the full address in the location field.

I don't do this at the moment, but am slightly tempted to change my file
and use this method. However, I wonder how you handle the "civil
parish" given on British Census?

Very often, the Civil Parish does not correspond to a "real address".
For example, sometimes the CP is something like "village A and village
B" or is some arbitrary division of a town such as "St Somewhere's".

At the moment, I use customised sentences for Census Events which
include "...[Address] in the Civil Parish of [Place]" so that a
non-genealogist might understand why the address might seem a little
odd.

The link for this course plainly states that if the released it not
accomplished by the date of the course that it will be cancelled. Doesn't
sound like they have any better inside track then anyone else. Their February
date for this course sounds like they are relying on the proposed release date
that we have been told about.

Seems to me that Legacy folks have said they will release when it is ready
for users, as a previous program and testing person, all I have to say is
"thank you" Legacy...I am so tired of receiving programs that have
glitches, known problems at time of release etc. due to pressure to make money
rather than produce a quality product.

I've seen a little preview of Legacy 7 at the Seminars recently done in

From looking around at maps, etc, It appears that English or British
American colonies might be a good solution. I also have New Amsterdam and
Swedish colonists so I could use Dutch American colonies and Swedish
American Colonies would work.

My example would be -
Rye, New Haven, Connecticut Colony, English American colonies.

or New Amsterdam, Manhattan Island, New Netherlands, Dutch American colonies
or United Dutch American colonies.

Michele,

I'd have to agree with Cathy there. As a near-neighbour (I'm Irish),
this is how I understand it:

a) England is that part of the island of Great Britain in the mid,
east and south, and nowhere else.

b) Great Britain (GB) is the island west of continental Europe
comprising Scotland, England and Wales.

c) The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) is
made up if the the island of Great Britain and that part of the island
of Ireland known as Northern Ireland.

d) The British Isles (a name which is often disputed by Irish people)
includes the two islands of Great Britain and Ireland.

A place in what we now call USA should *never* be considered part of
England, Great Britain, the United Kingdon or the British Isles. It
may however have been considered part of the British Empire, but how
you'd use that in an address, I wouldn't be sure.

Regards,

Dermot.

  Winifred,

I can't say that I've used the scrapbook/ photo album feature in Legacy since
it doesn't allow me to print different sizes of photos on the same page or
album. I've decided to create my own album using a recent version of
WordPerfect. MS Word would work, too, but, IMHO, WordPerfect handles the
insertion of images easier than Word, at least Word v2003 and previous
versions, so I've decided to use WordPerfect. I can size the images however I
wish, can add any amount of information under each image, and easily rearrange
until I'm satisfied with the result. I plan to add these printed pages to the
back of my Legacy Book Publication. I'll just use a Titled placeholder in my
Legacy Book for these additional pages.

The only genealogy program I know of that allows insertion of different sized
images that will print out that way is the old Family Origins genealogy
program. I don't know if the new Roots Magic, written by the same author,
handles the image sizes like the old Family Origins did, but it was a very nice
feature, and was introduced based on user requests.

If you'd like to make a request to Legacy, along those lines, go to the Home
Tab in Legacy, look on the right hand side of the window, about mid way down
under SUPPORT, and click on "Suggest a New Feature" where you can make your
request.

I enjoy using digital images in my family reports and my family feels the
images really add interest to the reports. I hope, in future, Legacy beefs up
the program in this area.

I'll be curious to read other responses to your question.

[LegacyUG] Event question

2007-11-24 Thread Darlene Gardner
Hello

I have customized the fields that display in my Family View screen. I choose
an event "Occupation" to display.

There may be multiple Occupation events for a person throughout their life but
there may be one that was their primary Occupation, which is the one I would
like to display.

So, my question isis there a way to set a primary event when there are
multiple events with the same nameas in occupation or residence etc.

Thanks
DG

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging

2007-11-24 Thread Carl Cox
<>

Make a backup, then try the merge. If anything goes wrong you can dump it and
start over. But I have found the merge process very reliable. About the only
problem I have is when merging hundreds of duplicates I will on occasion hit
merge when I don't intend to.

When merging duplicate families, the program will find the duplicates - as soon
as the merge begins the program looks for close relatives that need to be
merged, and does an excellent job. For your file, it would probably be better
to run a search that comes up when you select merge.

I usually scan down the alphabetic list to see if there are missed merges. But
often a missed merge is because of data entry with different names, either
because the correct name is not known, or a nickname is entered in one place.
That makes the entries far apart in the alphabetic list. Duplicates will also
show in children of a family, or in duplicate spouses.

Make sure you check the appropriate tabs along the top of the merge screen.

Enjoy!

RE: [LegacyUG] Event question

2007-11-24 Thread ronald ferguson

Darlene,

In a nutshell no. Should you wish to do this then I suggest that you consider
that you consider creating a new event eg. "Secondary Occupation". I also have
a number of people who had more than one pccupation and i just include them in
the same Description.

Just make a backup first and you can't mess up.

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging

2007-11-24 Thread Henry T. Peterson Jr.

Michele

The merge feature is great. However as Carl has mentioned please
backup before attempting.

My experience is related to file size also...My file is huge so I don't
do, would not attempt an automatic merge...this is no reflection on the
programs capabilities at all , but on the fact that there are just not
enough differences in the individuals to make an accurate merge...

BUT, I do lots of "Tools...MergeManual merge..."

That type of merge is more under control and you can pretty well
determine that at least the beginning parties are in fact the same...and
after the merge you may gain children or in-laws or maybe a whole
paternal or maternal link...

What I am saying is that if your file size is relatively small then your
merges are easier to sort through, but, if your family is hundreds of
thousands them maybe try manual merges

Backup, backup, backup

Please, write me direct if you have questions...

Regards
Henry

No, Pat! Read what Ron wrote together with this.

You can get the program to update itself straight from the "Legacy Home"
tab. With the program up and running, simply click on the tab under the
menu and toolbar that says "Legacy Home".

Then in the "Updates" box, click on the word "Updates". You should now get
the "Check For Legacy Update" dialog box. Now, click on the "Check For
Update" button. If your version is *not* up to date, you can now start to
download those parts of the program that need updating. Don't worry if the
progress bar goes backward, it does that now and then :-) just leave it to
complete.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: MERGING

2007-11-24 Thread Carl Cox
<>

You make that call with each merge. The RIN on the right is merged into the RIN
on the left. If you want it the other way, you hit the button to swap sides. I
nearly always merge the higher number into the lower number. I also often tell
the import to begin with a number much higher than the highest in my file. For
example, with 17,000 names in the file I could start at 20,000 or 100,000 as
the lowest RIN number. When you import the GEDCOM you have a chance to specify
the lowest RIN number. MRIN numbers just do what they want - you can change
them after the merge, but it is laborious and not of much use. I have to retain
the RIN numbers because the web program I use keys to the RIN number from the
GEDCOM, and I use that number to reference specific individuals in my on line
notes. It sure finds someone quick!

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging

2007-11-24 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
First some things to do first. Do you want to keep
RINs as much as possible? In each file, I hope your
RINs for most family members are the identical. Go to
Options; Customize; Other; Custom User ID Numbers;
Choose one of the buttons. Move the a variation of the
RIN to the User ID number. If you have something else
in there, use it instead. It must not match 2
different people, but the same person can match
himself. This will give you another item to help match
people to themselves.
For each file, get the largest number for each.
Example file A: 563 B: 11004 C: C: 6543 I would make
the largest, B the first file to be added to the NEW,
big file. Alway keep the RINs the same (if possible)
unless you don't care that you will lose them. It will
keep the RINs when you rename to NEW file. The first
is the easiet. Next, with C, Go to 'Import from'
Choose add (C)to existing (NEW) using Renumber RINs
starting with 11. This will make very RIN with
aeasily identiable group thing. Starting with 11
will make RIN 1 = 11, RIN 2 = 12 etc. Now do
the same with A, using 21 as a starting number.
Use the same number for the MRINs. At this point you
might want to save each of the new versions of the
files. Now that you have combined all the various
files, Start the Merge. You may have set up
Intellimerge at startup. If you did, use it, if not,
use the other choices. Look at both Normal Duplicate
Search and Special Duplicate Search. The more choices
(dates, spellings) you pick, the slower it will work.
For 3 this week mine took about 3 hours. The less
you pick the more chance of errors sneaking in. Tag
the NormalDS 'Compatable Gender' and 'User ID'. I
always make sure the lowest RIN is on the left, and
hopefully you will get rid of 90% of the higher
numbers. It may take a few runs through to find them
all. As they come up, If you KNOW John Smith RIN9 is
the grandfather of John Smith RIN 72, choose the NOT
Duplicates symbol on the bottom right of the screen.
If you are not sure, skip them. You can always go in
and re-search the file later, with your documents in
hand. IT IS TEDIOUS, but remember you are NOT retyping
from scratch. Keep that thought in mind while hitting
the Merge Right to Left button. On one occasion I
started from adding the three together 3 times,
because I was too fast on that button, and could not
undo the button. That is the biggest danger.
If you can't finish it in one sitting, the program
will remember where you stopped, so keep fresh, and
stop when loosing concentration.
Good luck, and drink more coffee.
