Re: [LegacyUG] All relatives show in Name List

2007-12-04 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Larry,

"For some reason I've not been getting any Legacy messages. That is why
I have posted more than once."

You need to get that sorted! You seem to be still subscribed, since
your post went to the list. But if you're not getting the mail, you
need to find out why. I also have a Yahoo address subscribed to this
list, and it is receiving the mail fine. But you should check your Bulk
folder to see if the posts are going there, and also check any filters
you have set in case the mail is being diverted inadvertently. If you
download the Yahoo mail to your own computer then you need to check both
the Yahoo web interface and your email program. Then talk to Legacy if
you're still in the dark.

In the meantime, I'm sending this directly to you as well as to the list
so that you see my reply, but you need to be watching the archives if
you want help while you're not receiving the list mail. :-)

"I did read the archived messages and my problem is I have many lines
that are not my lines. That is the reason I wanted to mark the name list."

On 02 Dec, Ron posted "Have you tried right clicking on the tag boxes in
Family View and selecting "entire family line"?" (Subject: Marking all
Relation in Name List).

On 03 Dec Cathy posted "You can tag everyone related by using Advanced
Tagging and using the Entire Line options in either Ancestor or
Descendant options. If this tags too many (it will include the ancestors
of in-laws etc if they are in your file), then go to the earliest
couple/person in the lines you want included and tag descendants only."
(Subject: All relatives show in Name List)

Do neither of these suggestions help? Have you tried them? If you did,
what was not satisfactory about the methods? Chances are, if you are
wanting something that doesn't entirely fit into a simple category -
like "direct ancestors" - then you are going to have to do a little
customisation of your tagging. But if these methods are of no help to
you, we need to know more about *why* they're no good before we can help
you more.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

PS apparently my earlier post to the list was not in plain text.
Highly embarrassing since I remind others to send in that format - my
apologies to everyone. Have no idea how it happened, since I haven't
changed any settings. But perhaps something has changed in Thunderbird
that I'm not aware of, so have set this post to plain text before
sending to make sure it stays that way.

Re: [LegacyUG] Photo selection

2007-12-04 Thread JLB
I don't think Legacy has a screenshot option, or any way to put pictures
side-by-side unless you want to make scrapbook pages. However, there's
lots of small programs around that do screenshots. My favorite is
FastStone Screen Capture. Since Version 5.3 it now costs 19.95 for a
lifetime license. http://www.faststone.org/ It's a tasty treat. I
still use a pre-5.3 version. If you want the installer, send me your
private email with a request in the subject bar and I'll send it over to
you. The other software there is free, including the Main Viewer that
will show you the pictures side-by-side. My other screenshot program is
MWSnap which is an older program. Once you get your settings the way
you want it's quite convenient. All pics go to a specified folder so
they don't get lost. Putting them into a Word doc first is a pretty
slow way around.

Claire,
I like to use a picture from when a person was in their early 20s -
this allows for comparison of hair color and style (if men go bald in
your family, for example, as they do in mine). By comparing 8 people
from different descending lines, all about the same age, I was able to
point out similarities in jaw line, nose shape, eyebrows, eye color,
and hairline. I use high school graduation pictures or wedding
pictures predominately.

One thing I started doing was attaching the wedding picture to the
non-related spouse who was marrying into the tree. Because then in a
report, it appears next to the sentence, "So-and-so married so-and-so
on 4 Jul 1999 in California" which works out perfectly.

I do attach photos to events and use them. When I wrote my book in
Word, I added additional photos from my files. Now I need to go back
and attach those photos to the events in Legacy so that they will
appear there, too.

Most people want you to show how they look now, so you might have that
bias to overcome in getting people to send you photos from when they
were younger. I was lucky that my Dad scanned and sent me photos from
his old photo albums, and I had been taking pictures of my cousins
since I was about 12 years old, so was able to use those. I think they
are going to have a laugh when they see their pictures taken from
Thanksgiving 1981! All the bald young men today are going to see their
lovely old curls!! hehe

One other thing, I attached the baby photo of one great aunt on to the
record of her sister who died as a baby (for whom I had no picture),
with the caption, "She may have looked similar to this baby photo of
her sister Anna." This way I was able to get Anna's baby pic into the
report, and also let people have something to imagine when they read
about this infant who died.

Re: [LegacyUG] Residence (not address) as an Event?

2007-12-04 Thread Pat Hickin
I break census data down, so that the main different census fields I have
are:

Event/Fact: Living
Description: in, with, or near and names of people involved
   Date: Census year
   Location: Twp/PO, Co, State
Event/Fact:: Also living in household:
Descr: relation to head, name, age, (if a servant or other I
also include color and occupation). I don't include sex unless it's not
apparent from the given name)

Event/Fact::Education:
Descr: literacy/illiteracy matters; whether attended school
during year, etc.:

Event/Fact::Occupation:
Descr: whatever info is available in the census
Event/Fact::Property:
Descr: (depending on what's available from census) any of the
following: Real & value, personal & value; slaves (sad to say) and sex,
age, mulattor or black for each; whether owned or rented
farm and/or house, value of house, wheher owned radio.

Of course I also enter birth info from the census in the birth field and any
marriage or death info that I can surmise into the respective fields. A
man's name disappears and his wife's appears as head as of household, and
she's said to be a widow. If I already had the exact date of death I
wouldn't bother wuth this.

(The most interesting occupation I've come across was for a woman (widow)
c1870 who gave her occupation as "capitalist"!)

I like breaking the census info down because then it's easy to compare the
status from one decade to the next. And I like to know who's living with
whom or near whom.

I think I don't include as many neighbors as genealogists advise, just
because it's too time-consuming. Though I do save copies of all pages from
which I take info -- but I don't include the next page for example.

Of course I don't do this detail for everybody. Just closer relatives or
those who for some reason intrigue me. But I try to be as inclusive as time
permits. For example if I had a distant relative who owned a lot of slaves,
I wouldn't list them individually but I'd group them in some way -- whatever
was most reveaing or provocative about the nature of his slaveholding
practices. (I did my thesis on opposition to slavery in Virginia from
1831-1861 so I have a special interest in the whole issue.)

The way I enter census data is to make the Event says 'Census', then the
date and location in the Description/Place/Notes field. You don't have to
have Events print out as sentences. You can also have them as a list in
point form. I believe printing a Location report involves the locations
as they exist in the Master Location list. Since all the locations
entered in your database, in any appropriate location fields, are in
there, it would automatically print them. If you put the location of the
census in the Desc/Places/Notes field, it will be included in your
Location Report.

Barbara,

There is nothing really wrong with that arrangement, although you may
have
to change the sentence wording for it to read properly (having changed it
on

mine I'm not sure what the default wording is!).

My own arrangement is:

Name: Residence
Description: census
Date: eg 1881
Location: Full Address

Details of the census are contained in the Source.

I don't know how many records you have but if it is quite a lot I'd be
sorely tempted to leave it providing it can be made to read OK.

Yes Thomas, the Harvard version really did have a lowercase road and the
title was in italics.

At the bottom of each page of citations was the following warning:

"Note: These citations are based on the reference standard for each style.
However, formatting rules within a style can vary widely between
applications and fields of interest or study. The specific requirements or
preferences of your reviewing publisher, institution or organization

I think thats worth remembering before getting too hung up on the 'right'
way to reference - just try to be consistent.

Perhaps all of you already know, but I just found out that if you go
to WorldCat

http://worldcat.org/
(master catalog of virtually all American [& other??] libraries -- at
least for their books) and put in your search entry, and find your
book, then look down and you'll see a line below the entry and right
above the line, the words

"Citations: Cite this entry . . . "
If you click on "Cite this entry" it will give you -- well, here's an
example (minus the formatting and hence more difficult to read): for a
book called "The road to Salem."

Citation Styles for "The road to Salem,"

APA

* Fries, A. L. (1944). The road to Salem. Chapel Hill: University of
North Carolina Press.

Chicago (Author-Date)

* Fries, Adelaide L. 1944. The road to Salem. Chapel Hill: University
of North Carolina Press.

Harvard

* FRIES, A. L. (1944). The road to Salem. Chapel Hill, University of
North Carolina Press.

And, of course, you can just copy and paste.

Word of warning, if you're citing a book that's gone thru multiple editions,
be sure to find an example of the same edition you used, before you copy the
citation.

I don't know which style (if any) is recommended by the Nat'l Gen Soc., but
when I was in graduate school in history (40 years ago), Turabian was the
standard.

In the English Dept., MLA was th standard.

Incidentally, I've just discovered World Cat, which has all sorts of neat
things to aid the researcher (once you've registered and signed in -- no
fee).
You can keep a list of all the books that interest you-- just by clicking
them --AND you can organize them into various lists -- so far I've just got
two lists: L-SIDE [maternal] and P-SIDE [paternal -- my maiden name begins
with a 'P']. You just click the book, choose the list -- and there it is!

Also I've found WorldCat to be VERY speedy (I have DSL connection to the
I'net).

In addition, under the prevously-mentioned line, you have an opportunity to
enter your zipcode, and then if you click on Libraries, WorldCat gives you a
list of the libraries that have that particular book -- arranged in order
according to how close they are to your zip code! (I just put in a
particular Moravian diary and got a list of 455 libraries!! the nearest one
42 miles away.)

So you could also have lists divided into libraries, or locations, etc.

So if you haven't already used it, give it a whirl. It is VERY
user-friendly.

Oh, I looked recently for a fairly rare book and found thru World Cat that
HeritageQuestOnline has it.

I'm not sure of the extent to which WorldCat has digitized books but I THINK
I read that this is in the works.

Wendy, For some reason I've not been getting any Legacy messages. That is
why I have posted more than once.

I did read the archived messages and my problem is I have many lines that
are not my lines. That is the reason I wanted to mark the name list.

I hope this helps and I still have not got an answer to how.

Hi Larry,

"Is there a Way To hi-light or Tag all relatives (all lines, cousins, aunt &
uncles, Not just direct line) in the Name List?"

You've asked this question many times now, and answers have been posted to
the list. Have you seen those answers? If you haven't, please see the
archives (link at the end of this and every post) - sort the posts by thread
and you will see them all together (you may need to scroll down a bit, or
you could use your browser's Find function to quickly locate them).

Do they answer your query? If they don't, please provide more information so
that people can help you further.

BTW, sending a copy of this post directly to Larry in case he's not seeing
the posts for some reason (check your spam folder if you're not - they're
likely to be there).

[LegacyUG] Descendant One Surname [was Am I still on the list?]

2007-12-04 Thread Cathy
You need to tag the group you want and export them to a new Legacy
file (don't forget to delete it when you've finished) and run the
Descendant book report from there.

You can tag the group from the Master Surname list. Highlight the
required Surname. Click Show List and then Tag that list using the
buttons on that screen.

Pick up the spouses in the export dialogue (Export to Legacy File)
where you can add Spouses, Children and Parents of tagged individuals.

Trying to read all the postings most of the time takes a lot of time.
Personally I enjoy some peace and quiet once in a while!
