RE: [LegacyUG] Now the LDS stuff is turned back on!

2007-12-05 Thread Sherry/Support
Norv,

I suppose it depends on how it's programmed. I have several genealogy
programs on my computer and only one has multiple files for a particular
database and they're all stored in the same folder.

Legacy is programmed in VB6 over Access. There are multiple *tables* in
*one* Family File but certainly not multiple files for the data *except* for
the usr files, which save settings, the mrg file which saves the merge in
process, the igi file which saves your igi settings and the rgd file which
saves your Research Guidance searches.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Whaa  Your data is saved to the .fdb file as soon as you click on the
"Save" button in any edit window.  It's not scattered all over your computer
- it's saved to the .fdb file that you're working in.  I don't know where
you got the idea that data is scattered all over your computer, but that's
*totally* wrong.

Check/repair goes through the file and removes deleted records, checks the
integrity of the links in the Family File and does a few other checks as
well as compresses the Family File.

The Master List Cleanup removes abandoned information, restores original
values and combines duplicate entries.

Compact File just compresses the Family File even further.

Set File Sorting Order will rebuild internal indexes. The different
languages have different sort orders - some languages have different letters
than we do.

You can do other things on your computer while you're doing these File
Maintenance utilities (as long as the file isn’t terribly large and the
process is using up a lot of system resources), but you can't work in Legacy
while the utilities are running. If you abort the process, that can cause
serious problems with your Family File.

I do recommend doing a backup before running any of the maintenance
utilities.  We don't normally see problems, but "just in case" it never
hurts to do a backup before making any changes to the Family File.

The problems that the OP had have *nothing* to do with what you're writing
about.

Thanks for using Legacy.

[LegacyUG] Personal Historian

2007-12-05 Thread Tom Element
Hello

I’m interested in Legacy’s Personal Historian add-on. As I live in
Australia and my ancestors came, mainly, from England and New Zealand and,
of course, Australia, how much benefit would it be to me in regard to
time-lines, other historical facts, and the like.

Are there any Australian, British or New Zealanders who have used this
add-on and how was it for us antipodeans? Useful? Good value? Helpful?

Thanks for any comments

Tom from Oz

Possibly because it has the fastest growing user base around. There has
recently been an influx of people who have switched from FTM and many of the
working details are quite different - not to mention Legacy's flexibility.
Those of us who have been around for a while are quite used to seeing the names
of new users crop up!

RE: [LegacyUG] Printing search results

2007-12-05 Thread ronald ferguson

Michele,

Assuming that you compiled your list using Search>Find then once you have
created the list click "Print" and select "Surname, Given Name" from the list
at the top and use customise (if necessary) to select "Birth Dt" and "Dth/Bur"
from the bottom. See how it looks in the Preview and Print. You may also need
to check your Font Size, Page set-up and Printer set-up

A couple of things to try: check the column widths for each field and
try page setup as Landscape instead of Portrait.

I just set up a similar scenario and found I didn't want to alter the
column widths, but could get the 3 columns on the page if I used
Landscape orientation.

I assume you are printing this list from the Search
List - Print tool. Look at the widths of your fields
there. Remove extra fields. You can adjust them in .01
inches pieces. Go to Page setup and change to
Landscape. You may have 'ghost' spaces. If none of
this helps.

Nice!! Could you clarify whether those programs that interact directly with
Legacy will function the same with version 7, or if they will also need an
upgrade at that time?

Ok, I shut down Legacy and just started it back up. Guess what, my
bookmarks are back and so is the tag scroll thing at the bottom. That is
just too weird.

Not sure about the bookmarks, but the tags and LDS temple stuff are
controlled from the settings. If you've not touched them, I'd suggest
you shut the machine down and restart it. Then, it the problem persists
following any rectification, I would be inclined to think that your
machine had either been infected or is exhibiting the first signs of an
imminent hardware failure. I would doubt that this is a problem with the

Re: [LegacyUG] Residence (not address) as an Event?

2007-12-05 Thread Chris Coward
I recently decided stop using the built in cenus event and instead created
two new events, Census US and Census UK

For US cenus entries I record:

Description - the age of the person and their relationship
Date: the official census date
Place: the location
Notes: the enumeration date.

For the sentence I setup:
[HeShe] appeared as [Desc] in the US Federal Census of [Date] for
[Place][CR][Notes]

So my great-grandfather his 1860 event reads:
Description: Son, aged 10
Date: 1 Jun 1860
Place: Astoria, Queens, New York, USA
Notes: Recorded 17 Jul 1860

The resulting sentence is:
He appeared as Son, aged 10 in the US Federal Census of 1 Jun 1860 for
Astoria, Queens, New York, USA.

Recorded 17 Jul 1860

When I'm not being lazy I record the actual address at the time of the
sentence as a "residence" event.

In Family Tree Maker, I used the Residence event as the place where I
recorded census information. It came into Legacy like this: For example, I
might have an event named Residence, and in the description it might say
Hickory Township, Carroll County, Arkansas, USA. The date would be the
year

of the census, say 1850. The Location field is blank.

Should I have a different procedure--is that where the census information
goes, or should I put it somewhere else? If I leave Residence as an Event,
should I delete what is now in Description and put it in the Location
field

of the event?

Thanks,

Barbara

holdings)

Perhaps all of you already know, but I just found out that if you go to
WorldCat

http://worldcat.org/
(master catalog of virtually all American [& other??] libraries -- at
least for their books) and put in your search entry, and find your book,
then look down and you'll see a line below the entry and right above the
line, the words

"Citations: Cite this entry . . . "
If you click on "Cite this entry" it will give you -- well, here's an
example (minus the formatting and hence more difficult to read): for a
book called "The road to Salem."

Citation Styles for "The road to Salem,"

APA

* Fries, A. L. (1944). The road to Salem. Chapel Hill: University of North
Carolina Press.

Chicago (Author-Date)

* Fries, Adelaide L. 1944. The road to Salem. Chapel Hill: University of
North Carolina Press.

Harvard

* FRIES, A. L. (1944). The road to Salem. Chapel Hill, University of North
Carolina Press.

MLA

* Fries, Adelaide L. The Road to Salem. Chapel Hill: University of North
Carolina Press, 1944.

Turabian

* Fries, Adelaide L. The Road to Salem. Chapel Hill: University of North
Carolina Press, 1944.

And, of course, you can just copy and paste.

Word of warning, if you're citing a book that's gone thru multiple
editions, be sure to find an example of the same edition you used, before
you copy the citation.

I don't know which style (if any) is recommended by the Nat'l Gen Soc.,
but when I was in graduate school in history (40 years ago), Turabian was
the standard.

In the English Dept., MLA was th standard.

Incidentally, I've just discovered World Cat, which has all sorts of neat
things to aid the researcher (once you've registered and signed in -- no
fee).
You can keep a list of all the books that interest you-- just by clicking
them --AND you can organize them into various lists -- so far I've just
got two lists: L-SIDE [maternal] and P-SIDE [paternal -- my maiden name
begins with a 'P']. You just click the book, choose the list -- and there
it is!

Also I've found WorldCat to be VERY speedy (I have DSL connection to the
I'net).

In addition, under the prevously-mentioned line, you have an opportunity
to enter your zipcode, and then if you click on Libraries, WorldCat gives
you a list of the libraries that have that particular book -- arranged in
order according to how close they are to your zip code! (I just put in a
particular Moravian diary and got a list of 455 libraries!! the nearest
one 42 miles away.)

So you could also have lists divided into libraries, or locations, etc.

So if you haven't already used it, give it a whirl. It is VERY
user-friendly.

Oh, I looked recently for a fairly rare book and found thru World Cat that
HeritageQuestOnline has it.

I'm not sure of the extent to which WorldCat has digitized books but I
THINK I read that this is in the works.

Hi Larry,

"For some reason I've not been getting any Legacy messages. That is why

I have posted more than once."

You need to get that sorted! You seem to be still subscribed, since

Your post went to the list. But if you're not getting the mail, you

Need to find out why. I also have a Yahoo address subscribed to this

List, and it is receiving the mail fine. But you should check your Bulk

Folder to see if the posts are going there, and also check any filters

You have set in case the mail is being diverted inadvertently. If you

Download the Yahoo mail to your own computer then you need to check both

The Yahoo web interface and your email program. Then talk to Legacy if

You're still in the dark.

In the meantime, I'm sending this directly to you as well as to the list

So that you see my reply, but you need to be watching the archives if

You want help while you're not receiving the list mail. :-)

"I did read the archived messages and my problem is I have many lines

That are not my lines. That is the reason I wanted to mark the name list."

On 02 Dec, Ron posted "Have you tried right clicking on the tag boxes in

Family View and selecting "entire family line"?" (Subject: Marking all

Relation in Name List).

On 03 Dec Cathy posted "You can tag everyone related by using Advanced

Tagging and using the Entire Line options in either Ancestor or

Descendant options. If this tags too many (it will include the ancestors

Of in-laws etc if they are in your file), then go to the earliest

Couple/person in the lines you want included and tag descendants only."

(Subject: All relatives show in Name List)

Do neither of these suggestions help? Have you tried them? If you did,

What was not satisfactory about the methods? Chances are, if you are

Wanting something that doesn't entirely fit into a simple category -

Like "direct ancestors" - then you are going to have to do a little

Customisation of your tagging. But if these methods are of no help to

You, we need to know more about *why* they're no good before we can help

You more.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,

Wendy Howard

PS apparently my earlier post to the list was not in plain text.

Highly embarrassing since I remind others to send in that format - my

Apologies to everyone. Have no idea how it happened, since I haven't

Changed any settings. But perhaps something has changed in Thunderbird

That I'm not aware of, so have set this post to plain text before

Sending to make sure it stays that way.

:-)

Citation Styles for "The road to Salem,"

APA

* Fries, A. L. (1944). The road to Salem. Chapel

Chicago (Author-Date)

* Fries, Adelaide L. 1944. The road to Salem. Chapel

Harvard

University of North
Carolina Press, 1944.

Turabian

* Fries, Adelaide L. The Road to Salem. Chapel Hill:
University of North
Carolina Press, 1944.

And, of course, you can just copy and paste.

Word of warning, if you're citing a book that's gone
thru multiple editions,
be sure to find an example of the same edition you
used, before you copy the
citation.

I don't know which style (if any) is recommended by
the Nat'l Gen Soc., but
when I was in graduate school in history (40 years
ago), Turabian was the
standard.

In the English Dept., MLA was th standard.

Incidentally, I've just discovered World Cat, which
has all sorts of neat
things to aid the researcher (once you've registered
and signed in -- no
fee).
You can keep a list of all the books that interest
you-- just by clicking
them --AND you can organize them into various lists
-- so far I've just got
two lists: L-SIDE [maternal] and P-SIDE [paternal
-- my maiden name begins
with a 'P']. You just click the book, choose the
list -- and there it is!

Also I've found WorldCat to be VERY speedy (I have
DSL connection to the
I'net).

In addition, under the prevously-mentioned line, you
have an opportunity to
enter your zipcode, and then if you click on
Libraries, WorldCat gives you a
list of the libraries that have that particular book
-- arranged in order
according to how close they are to your zip code! (I
just put in a
particular Moravian diary and got a list of 455
libraries!! the nearest one
42 miles away.)

So you could also have lists divided into libraries,
or locations, etc.

So if you haven't already used it, give it a whirl.
It is VERY
user-friendly.

Oh, I looked recently for a fairly rare book and
found thru World Cat that
HeritageQuestOnline has it.

I'm not sure of the extent to which WorldCat has
digitized books but I THINK
I read that this is in the works.

I rather think I do, as I have some quite sophisticated image programs (and,
more importantly, know how to use them). But for many purposes the simplest
ways are often the best.

side-by-side unless you want to make scrapbook pages. However, there's
