Okay, you're right - I had never even noticed that relationship to ME
on the Pedigree screen. But it still shows the same thing as it does on
the Family View on mine: Half Uncle, Half 1st Cousin, etc.

I can't even guess why yours doesn't, but someone out there must know.

Re: [LegacyUG] Multiple dates (birth, death, marriage)

2008-03-21 Thread JLB
Probably the most obvious is Alternates under Events, be it Alternate
Birth, Alternate Death, Alternate Burial, etc, etc. Add a New event,
pick or define the alternate and put in your data plus source. There
may be a range of opinions on this but I think you'd be better off
entering the alternates and their sources as you go, rather than
entering dates and then going back over searching for your source
material later. If you find some definitive answers later you can
delete the alternates although some people recommend leaving them in
there anyway. If you start out by putting alternate information in
General Notes, it's not much better than having it all on scraps of
paper. In other words, at some point, you're going to want to go
through your General Notes and move it all elsewhere. It's doing the
same thing twice with not much benefit. But it's an option. It's
easier to see where you are on the Individual Information screen if it's
in Events.

How about putting "House of David" etc in the User ID field for each
appropriate person. Then you can search on that and create a list. From
the search list, you can select the information to print in the report from
the Print button. You can output the "report" as a CSV file and bring it
  into Excel.

Is there any kind of report (file) Legacy can make that will show simple
  line items, such as:

Kent Myrick House of David E-mail address

I need to be able to sort the file. I can do it in a word processor file,
but it would really simplify things for me if Legacy can do it somehow.

Why? Several years ago we had a Frazier family reunion. Our immigrant
ancestor had 7 children, and just for fun, we divided the group up by
their names, e.g. "House of David", "House of Isaac" and so on. We had
name tags and a hand-drawn chart showing each House and the members
of each who were at the reunion. It turned out to be a fun way of creating
smaller groups of closer relatives, and we photographed each House
  separately.

We kept lists of each House by hand back then, but all have since been
lost and re-creating them is a labor I'd rather not take on again. BUT
all those people are in my Legacy file, and if I could somehow permanently
note them in a file, I'd be ecstatic.

I know there's one way to do it with the Address File. There are already
blanks for name and e-mail address, and I could put the House in any of
the other fields that I don't need. But there's no way to sort that list
and print it out except by using the Name Tag function, which doesn't
do what I need. Or is there

And I don't want to use the Tags because they're not permanent markers.

  Is there any other way?

Re: [LegacyUG] 1/2 Brother to Mom, what's he to me

2008-03-21 Thread Wendy Howard

HI John,

In the relationships displayed above the central couple in the Family
View, the relationship is called Uncle. However, if you go to the
Relationship Calculator (under Tools in the menu) and choose those two
people, it will be called Half-Uncle, which is what I was thinking I'd
call it before I went to see what Legacy would do. Is this a bug?

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

And when I said search on the User ID I meant that you can search on User ID
contains "House of" and you'll get all of the people.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re:SORTABLE LISTS?

2008-03-21 Thread JLB
I think this one is going right over my head. House of / Descendants of
- what's the difference? Each line can be printed with an alphabetical
listing of the names and email addresses. It could also be exported as
a .csv and imported into a spreadsheet (although I don't see the point)
and then another column could be created in which to paste House of
Whoever. Then repeat for the other 6 lines, import all those csv's into
the same spreadsheet, adding in House of WhoeverNext, and so on. And
then when it's altogether in one place, it can be sorted by columns,
can't it? I'm not a spreadsheet expert and frankly, can't see what they
have to do with this issue. If the writer of the original question
could pop back in here (haven't heard from him in awhile) and tell us
what the point is that might help. If he wants a listing of names and
email addresses for his various Houses (I think that was the question)
it's been covered.

If it's a matter of sorting by 'houses' wouldn't it work just as well to
create a list for each house? In other words, each descendant line. I
don't know what the point is after that, but the seven separate
documents could be pieced together if they all needed to be put into one.

"House of whoever" doesn't need to be in a column as that would be the
header for each document.

You can also search all the descendants at once or one line at a time,
set up the columns you want in Print Options and export the file as .csv
that can be imported into a spreadsheet. You've got all kinds of
options here and it shouldn't take long at all.

Kent,

I don't know a way of doing that in Legacy and I suspect you would
need at least a spreadsheet to do it rather than I would processor
(although I have not thought that through). The free database
which I will be putting on my fergys.co website at the end of this

Kent,

I don't know a way of doing that in Legacy and I suspect you would
need at least a spreadsheet to do it rather than I would processor
(although I have not thought that through). The free database
which I will be putting on my fergys.co website at the end of this

Is there any kind of report (file) Legacy can make that will show
simple

line items, such as:

Kent Myrick House of David E-mail address

I need to be able to sort the file. I can do it in a word
processor file,

but it would really simplify things for me if Legacy can do it
somehow.

Why? Several years ago we had a Frazier family reunion. Our
immigrant

ancestor had 7 children, and just for fun, we divided the group
up by

their names, e.g. "House of David", "House of Isaac" and so
on. We had

name tags and a hand-drawn chart showing each House and the members

of each who were at the reunion. It turned out to be a fun way of
creating

smaller groups of closer relatives, and we photographed each House

separately.

We kept lists of each House by hand back then, but all have since
been

lost and re-creating them is a labor I'd rather not take on
again. BUT

all those people are in my Legacy file, and if I could somehow
permanently

note them in a file, I'd be ecstatic.

I know there's one way to do it with the Address File. There are
already

blanks for name and e-mail address, and I could put the House in
any of

the other fields that I don't need. But there's no way to sort
that list

and print it out except by using the Name Tag function, which
doesn't

do what I need. Or is there

And

Re: [LegacyUG] creating a notes event ... good idea or no?

2008-03-21 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
It is a tough question. IMHO, the main programs can
handle that stuff, in their own way, but identifying
which ones don't, is harder. And those users might be
better served switching to one of the big ones (I vote
for Legacy) if that person is able to do so.

What you are saying is correct but as I read Kent's email he wanted the option
to sort and the "House of David" in another column. I cannot see how this can
be done using your method.

RE: [LegacyUG] Re:SORTABLE LISTS?

2008-03-21 Thread ronald ferguson

Kent,

Do you have Access or Open Office? If so it's easy to print from tblAR the
Names and email addresses (from what you said I take it that you have the
details in the Address Book btw) but *do* work on a copy. You need to make a
query to show the AddName and Email using the Kind field set to "=0" as the
Criterion. If you also mean by "House of David" another column showing the
family group to which the person belongs, then you could an extra column to
tblAR to contain this detail and select that column as well. I would not
suggest for one minute that you ever put this file back into Legacy though!

You could also sort by the AddName field which will basically sort by First
Name or by AddrSort which will sort by Surname. Unfortunately you may find this
appearing in the query table so may have to do another query of the query
omitting that column.

It turned out to be a fun way of
creating

smaller groups of closer relatives, and we photographed each House
separately.

We kept lists of each House by hand back then, but all have since been

lost and re-creating them is a labor I'd rather not take on again. BUT
all those people are in my Legacy file, and if I could somehow
permanently

note them in a file, I'd be ecstatic.

I know there's one way to do it with the Address File.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re:SORTABLE LISTS?

2008-03-21 Thread Myrick
I know this isn't the kind of thing Legacy is set up for, but I was sort of
hoping there might be some "back door" way of doing it!

Oh well. Yes, I know how to do it with a spreadsheet, and have done it
with Word Perfect before. I just don't WANT to do it again, since I'd
have to re-type all those names that are already in Legacy.

Thanks Ron.

  Kent,

I don't know a way of doing that in Legacy and I suspect you would need at
least a spreadsheet to do it rather than I would processor (although I have not
thought that through). The free database which I will be putting on my
fergys.co website at the end of this month will do it.

[LegacyUG] creating a notes event ... good idea or no?

2008-03-21 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
I would like to have my notes placed after each person on the FGS and even
sometimes placed differently in my narrative reports. Can anyone think of a
negative reason to handle note type information by placing them in a note
event, rather than using General notes?

The only drawback I can think of is transferring information to other genealogy
programs. Would anyone know, are there any genealogy programs out there now
that DO NOT recognize events with notes? I specifically remember the old FTM
format wouldn't be able to handle long notes attached to events but I don't
know how the newer FTM program format handles them now.

My thanks for your time.

Mary

I get false virus detected warnings when I try to email backups to
myself. Gmail has stopped accepting the xxx.fg file and I have to
delete it before sending.

It is unlikely that your files became infected while on the email
server, so you are probably OK if you can download the files.

Mcafee offers a free virus detection application to scan for virus' -
you could try this --

For ongoing protection there is AVG - a free application that has
fairly low overhead --

covered. My computer died last August, and I've just now gotten another one.
Went to retrieve my info from my email account, when 3 out of 4 files read,
"Virus Detected"!

My current unit doesn't have an anti-virus program (no room) so I can't clean

Of course we forgot the possibility of the complete annihilation of the
universe I wonder where I could store it all so I can get my

Maybe there's a market for storage vaults on Mars? There would some delay

Yes, folks, while technology is getting better, manufacturing practices
certainly aren't. I've said this before: we still have the original
photographs around that were taken in the Civil War. Your BEST archival
method for your family files is a hard copy print out on acid-free paper

It very much depends on the brand and model. In the past six months
I've
recovered data (for other people) from a 3 year old Western Digital IDE
drive (not bootable) and an 18 month old Samsung SATA drive (bad sectors
and not bootable). These were both desktop PCs, so not subject to the
mechanical abuse that laptops receive. On the other hand, I have an
ancient laptop that runs almost 24/7 on a drive that was used and of
unknown age when installed 3 years ago.

Thinking "no-years" leads to good backup practices ;-)

John

I heard 5 years, then I heard 2 years, then some-one told me they'd had
disks go bad in under one year. I'm down to thinking no-years. I
think
it's one of those things where if it works - great! If it doesn't,
good
thing I had another plan. I use external hard-drives, flash-drives,
online storage (Mozy) and email.

RE: [LegacyUG] Backing Up Legacy Files

2008-03-21 Thread Steve Ayres

I sort of opened a can of worms by my suggestion about backing up, but at least
I learnt some better ways of safe guarding data. I have just downloaded the
syncback program so will install this tonight and give it a try. Now all I
have to do is convince my wife that she does not need any new "fat quarters"
and that a stand alone Hard Disk would be a brilliant idea, wonder how I will
go.
