[LegacyUG]Tollarance - was: New Family Search Access

2008-05-26 Thread GBallard
Gene, (And all others who have dis-jointed noses)

In defense of JLB: (all times listed below are Pacific time)

Sherry's note was send at 1:49 PM, but didn't hit my list until 3:04 PM.

JLB's note was send at 3:00 PM.

So, please don't be so quick to jumb and pounce on JLB's sending a message.
The message could have been worded differently for me, but I am in
California. I do not know what part of the world JLB is, but in different
parts of the world people use different writing styles. It is just so
amazing at the tolarance, or lack there of, of people posting the link to
the download (which probably violated Millennia's rules), but people sharing
with a new user that the ettiquite is to not use "Artistic Sensibilities" is
looked totally down upon by you.

The way JLB worded the message may have been in jest or in a completely
different tone than you made it out to be. Without knowing this, we
shouldn't be so quick to judge.

Hopefully the person it was intended for didn't take it in the same tone in
which you did.

Can we all exercise a little tollarance, understanding, and patience that
what we read may mean something different in your native land. (As we are
all waiting for the release of v.7 I added patience to this list.)

This is a world wide list. Lets remember this. If there are messages that
offend you, please re-read them and try to read the positive in the message.

Glen Ballard

P.S. I am not perfect. I haven't always read things with tollarance and
definitely missed the understanding to many an email. But I try to re-read
the email several times and try to put myself in the posters place and try
to think like they are thinking.

I defended you once but this post is intolerable in its nasty and vicious
tone. It is especially egregious considering that Sherry has already taken
care of this individuals posting. One would hope that you are just having a
bad day but I fear that is just a pipe dream.

[LegacyUG] Slots for number of children

2008-05-26 Thread Meg Greenwood
I've got an ancient version of Legacy, version 4. Am ready to update
and have a question on version 7's ability to list the number of
children in a family. v4 has the same number of 'slots' for every
family in the entire database. You can change it...but the change
affects ALL the families. I have some with upwards of 14 children which
squeezes names in a small listing, any more are on an extra tab. Those
families with few children show mostly unecessary blank spaces.

I need to be able to show a rare few familes with 14, 15, 16 or more
children with others having only 2, 3 or 4. I need the family page
display to be sized accordingly. Will v7 offer me this option ? Meg

Re: [LegacyUG] v6 to v7 install question AND user settings question

2008-05-26 Thread Gary Templeman
I would say the best would be to first uninstall the existing version 7.
Then reinstall version 6 so it shows up in add/remove, and you should be
able to properly uninstall it. Then reinstall version 7. Re-boot after each
step.

Gary

- Original Message -
If it doesn't work, I think for a clean uninstall you'd need to reinstall
Legacy 6 and uninstall it - which may result in needing to reinstall
Legacy 7. If so, save your Legacy 7 usr files. Also don't forget to save
any colour schemes you've developed in Legacy 6 (lcs files in ColorSchemes
folder).

Re customising version 7. I'd encourage you to do the customisations again
as that way you'll read through some of the differences that there are in
version 7 and find the new icons etc. However, if you have your own colour
schemes saved, you could copy those .lcs files from the ColorSchemes
folder in version 6 to version 7 and have them available to you.

I'm assuming you COPIED your family file to a new folder before opening in
Legacy 7 as that involves a database conversion due to new features.

Just a reminder to people to make sure they make clearly named backup
files from Legacy 6 BEFORE opening files in Legacy 7.

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Report

2008-05-26 Thread Dan Bateham

Hi Elizabeth,

Here's another option, if you don't have Adobe Standard, but DO have the
free Adobe Reader ...
This works with the Adobe Reader 8.1.2 (and probably some earlier versions)
and OpenOffice as well as, I'm sure, Word.

Create PDF file of your Event Report > open in Adobe Reader > click Edit
Menu > Select All > Paste ... to your favorite word processor.

Cheers,

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Report

Hi Christina,

What edits are you wanting to do?
Or what data is it that you're actually wanting listed?
Maybe we can suggest another way to get what you want.

For example:
Since you are looking at an Event Report for
Cemetery, I'm assuming you have entered Cemetery as an Event/Fact
You may be able to get what you want by tagging
the people concerned and then using the Search
List/Name List Print options - print to csv and open in Word.

Re: [LegacyUG] v6 to v7 install question AND user settings question

2008-05-26 Thread Cathy

Hi Jessica,

I'm not sure about your first issue. Did you install Legacy 7 to the
same folder as Legacy 6?
I can answer that - you didn't as the name of the main program file
is the same in both versions and Legacy 6 would have been
overwritten. So I'm not sure why Legacy 6 has disappeared from the
Add/Remove programs.

Does the Uninstall option still appear in the Start - Programs menu?
If so use that.
If it doesn't work, I think for a clean uninstall you'd need to
reinstall Legacy 6 and uninstall it - which may result in needing to

Re: [LegacyUG] Switch Gender

2008-05-26 Thread Cathy

Hi Kay,

That's a really strange one. I'd be inclined to revert to my backup
from two days ago.

However, when the gender choices are grayed out, you swap gender by
Swapping Husband and Wife - Edit menu.

Legacy Deluxe v 6.0.0.190 (latest) allows a search of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) IGI database. Of interest to LDS
people is the baptism, endowment, and sealing dates and temple names.
Question: Will Legacy v 7 continue that lookup ability?
The LDS Church is planning a release of a new searchable database known

Richard,

*Please* no HTML and especially no graphics in your messages to the LUG
list.

http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Etiquette.asp

Please only send messages in plain text format, because:

1. HTML format messages require more server space for archiving than plain
text messages.
2. HTML messages can hide viruses.
3. HTML messages will increase a message's Spam rating by Spam blocking
software.
4. It takes longer for persons with dial-up connections to download HTML
messages.
5. Some older e-mail readers display HTML messages by including hypertext
code, which makes them hard to read.
6. Some people with visual impairment may have difficulty reading messages
with colored text or tinted backgrounds.

In answer to your questions - yes, the IGI Search feature is still in Legacy
v7 and yes, we hope to have Legacy v7 compatible with the New Family Search
by the time the roll-out is complete.

Rodney,

click on the little + sign at the right hand side of the buried slot on the
Individual Information screen, as if you were going to enter notes.

A fourth option, Cremated has been added below the three note options.
Click on Cremated and it will change the burial label on the Family View.

I can't remember when this little helpful option was added (sometime during
the v6 updates, I think) but it is nice to have. I had always entered as
[[Cremated]] in the double brackets for my display but this is much nicer.

RE: [LegacyUG] Version 7 Source-Writer - for Geoff

2008-05-26 Thread Linda Bischoff
Bill

I'm not Geoff and don't know what the plans for later upgrades are but the
following might be an explanation of the order of entry.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but if you use Ancestry.com
to get your census data you will notice that when you go to the 1850 census
screen where you enter the name and other info for the person, you will see
some info about the 1850 census, including the NARA info. Then you click the
search button and it will give you several people that it has found. Then
you "click" on the person you want to look at...

Now, you will notice that there is a screen where Ancestry has entered the
names of the individuals in the household. Below that is the source
citation, followed by source information (which is pretty much the same as
the first page you looked at). Anyway, the source citation is in the same
order that you find it on Legacy detail, but you will be adding a bit more,
such as the identity of the person you have looked at etc.

I have chosen to add more info than just the name; in identity field I have
been entering the line #, the person's name, and, if I'm verifying a
calculated birth year, I enter the person's age.

As for being able to add other templates, I don't know if that's possible.
I haven't found a way to do it yet. But I believe you don't have to use
SourceWriter for every source. I think you can "uncheck" it on the customize
source page, and it will retain those you have used with SourceWriter, but
you can enter others using your old system. Please notice that when you are
using "SourceWriter" there is a place where you can override the citation
that is done automatically. I will use that eventually for a couple of
unconventional sources that I use.

I don't know if this helps or makes it more confusing.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Version 7 Source-Writer - for Geoff

The new Source Writer seems to have all the necessary fields to match the
new Evidence Explained (as has been noted on the list before.) However some
of the fields are in an order that I would not have used since the display
in some of the on-screen lists can be confusing. For instance, the citation
detail for 1850 (and other) U.S. census have the Roll number field at the
beginning of the citation detail fields, but it appears in a citation at the
end. As a result when you view, for example, the Assigned Sources window, it
appears in the Detail as, "Lake Prairie, 187, 290, 151, 156" etc. (i.e.
name, roll#, page#, Dwelling#, family#, etc.) Is there a way to change the
order of the fields to put the roll number at the end to correspond to where
it appears in the citation?

I also have several other related questions about the Source Writer:

1) Is there a way to create new citation templates which are not covered in
the supplied set, i.e. those from Evidence Explained? (Elizabeth Mills
acknowledges that there were just too many to include every possible
citation in the book.) For instance, the citations for non-US countries are
limited in scope.

2) Is there a way to create new templates to match the arrangements of
citation elements shown in Evidence! (1997), which are still valid, but
weren't covered in Evidence Explained since the two volumes compliment each
other rather than one replacing the other? Many people have Evidence! as a
reference and may never need to move up to Evidence Explained.

Thanks,

Bill

[LegacyUG] v7 features I like best ... SourceWriter is among them

2008-05-26 Thread Penny
I really like the new SourceWriter and I didn't think I was going to! It's
quick and easy. I like that there's a readily viewable designation of which
sources have been created using it, too.

The "override output" option in it is handy, as well. In most instances,
I'm quite willing to state everything there is to know about a source I'm
citing. However, when it comes to a census citation, I have a perverse
unwillingness to state which of several available places I viewed a given
image. I don't think it matters (and yes, I know some of you think it
does - quite a lot!). The override does allow me to edit out those things
in the output detail like parentheses and the little notation that I didn't
provide the "where I saw it".

When I put a source that includes overridden output onto the source
clipboard, it does not automatically tick the override choice-boxes for me,
but it does keep the way I wanted the override written so that three quick
clicks adds my detail output just as I wanted it to be.

Fantastic!

I can see where the ability to quickly switch back and forth between
SourceWriter and Basic Source entry would be a nice addition. As it is, you
have to go to Options>Customize>Source and choose one or the other and save
it. Perhaps this will suffice for the moment as I can't be sure I won't be
able to customize the great majority of SourceWriter entries adequately
enough. Hopefully, there won't be many of those outside of U.S. Censi. Who
knows ... I may rarely ever use the Basic version of source entry again!

So far v7 is a real winner, imo. Now, if it would only do the danged
household chores for me, so all I had to do is play with genealogy. Maybe
Millenia can include that on the wishlist for v8? :)

Happy Memorial Day, y'all!

Re: [LegacyUG] New Family Search Access

2008-05-26 Thread JLB
Is this your first posting on the LUG? Or have you noticed that all
messages arrives in plain text? Not because you're the only person on
the planet with artistic sensibilities, just because that's the way it
needs to be. Also, you must be living under a rock if you're asking if
Legacy is interfacing with the new Family Search.

Question: Will Legacy v 7 continue that lookup ability?
The LDS Church is planning a release of a new searchable database
known as the "New Family Search (NFS)". It is my understanding that
the original IGI will be merged into, or added to, the NFS database.
Question: Will Legacy v 7, now or in the future, interface to that
new family search database?

RE: [LegacyUG] v7 Error 400

2008-05-26 Thread Sherry/Support
Peter,

There are a couple of different steps. If saving the vsocx6.ocx file from our
website to the c:\Windows\System32 folder doesn't solve the problem, then you
need to save that file along with the Legacy.exe.local file to the c:\Legacy
folder. Normally that solves the problem and should work for v7 was well as
v6. The key is having the legacy.exe.local folder in the c:\Legacy folder along
with the vsocx6.ocx file.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Thanks for the reply, Gary.
I'm using XP (sp 2); the original vsocx6.ocx version was 6.0.0.52; I copied the
VSOCX6.ocx version 6.0.0.44.
I'll hold off on more changes until Legacy Support chimes in.

You have to unlock the deluxe version, just like you did with ver. 6.
There should have been a customer number on the packing slip that you
use to unlock the deluxe version. Go to the Help menu and choose
Unlock Legacy Deluxe.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: [Legacy] v7 update to 7.0.0.38

2008-05-26 Thread JLB
Your message started out asking for quicker availability of the new
deluxe version. As has been explained over and over and over, it isn't
ready yet. In your most recent message you've switched to asking for a
download of the standard version. 99% of the new stuff in v.7 is only
in the deluxe version, so upgrading from v.6 deluxe to v.7 standard
would be a huge step backwards. Still want it?

My cousin is a new Legacy user who has v7 and will be bringing her

It would be nice to be able to pass her a copy of my data file and

were sending tons of discs out... but setting it up for download
should not cause too much trouble... especially if you farm out the

Or it could be that the Virtual Earth server was having a problem, or even a
temporary glitch from her ISP. I was looking at some things on Youtube the

much of it is unrelated to our personal hardware or software.

Jessica,

Re: your last paragraph.

I'm surprised it took so long for the maps to appear - could it be that you
are low on memory as Legacy 7 does demand more memory.

When opened, the mapping will auto enter the pins for the locations which it
knows. The others you will need to enter manually. If you have the latitudes
and longitudes then these will be respected - and are likely to be more
accurate than the auto-generated locations..

Oh, and on the mapping for everyone that's curious. I let it sit
open for about ten minutes or so, and FINALLY got a map! It had two of
the ten or so places showing in the left of the box showing as
pushpins, not all the locations. But as I do not know how it works and
interfaces yet, I can't say why that is.

Re: [LegacyUG] vy Error 400

2008-05-26 Thread Gary Templeman
What operating system are you using? What was the version number for the
vsocx6.ocx file before you tried the fix this time? Finally, when replacing
DLL or OCX files, sometimes they need to be manually registered. Follow
these steps for Windows XP.

1. Once your Window's operating system has loaded completely, click on Start
and then click on Run.
2. Next you will input in the Run field a command that tells your computer
to register the DLL or OCX file. You will need to input specific information
including the path and the file name. The following is a template for the
command: regsvr32 "\FileName.dll"
It is important to note that path is the actual location or directory of
where the file is located. Filename is obviously the name of the DLL or OCX
file you will be registering. Below is a sample command: Regsvr32
"C:\Windows\System32\example.dll"
3. Once the command is input into the Run field correctly, press Enter. Once
the DLL has been registered, you should receive a confirmation in the form
of a pop up box. This message will list your newly registered DLL file and
confirm that is was successfully registered into the registry.

There may be a similar issue if you need to try the second fix with the
msvbvm60.dll file. However I would wait to hear from support before trying
any of the v. 6 fixes with v.7. It may be a similar problem but need a
different file version than that posted for v.6.

[LegacyUG] Version 7 Source-Writer - for Geoff

The new Source Writer seems to have all the necessary fields to match the

beginning of the citation detail fields, but it appears in a citation at the

Thanks,

Bill

hiding marriages - was Re: [LegacyUG] VS. 7 feature I like best

2008-05-26 Thread Mary Figgins
My sister agrees with this.  She doesn't want her first marriage even
mentioned.  However, if you (or someone in the future) was doing research
they would/could find records showing both of them.  Not mentioning the
first marriage in the database at all would mean that that someone may be
looking for her in the wrong place.

The ability not to print it on current printouts is a great idea.

Not a matter of "hiding", since the marriages are documented in the
database (or did you miss that line in the message?).

Previous marriages without children do not affect any other relationships,
thus may not be wanted in every descendant/ancestor chart or report.

RE: [LegacyUG] Training Videos

2008-05-26 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Volume 1 of the training videos was redone for version 7. It also includes a
new CD entitled "Mastering Legacy: Names, Dates & Places" to replace the
video that was sold separately and published by FamilyHistoryRadio.com.
Volume 2 of the training videos now includes Legacy's Tagging and Searching
Made Easy, as well as the last three that you mentioned. These probably
won't need to be redone as not too much has changed with them.

In recent weeks I bought these additional training videos:

Allen,

Legacy 7 can read files from Legacy 6 but it converts them to its own
format, hence Legacy 7 files cannot be read by Legacy 6. Obviously, a
Gedcom can be created using Legacy 7 and opened in Legacy 6.

Geoff,

Why can't you guys release it for immediate download for those who would
like to pay for the upgrade. There are no discs to produce and send. I
choose not to purchase discs nowadays because it is much friendlier on
the

environment.

My cousin is a new Legacy user who has v7 and will be bringing her
computer

to the family reunion next weekend... sadly when I called in to see if I
could purchase a copy I was told I would have to wait like everyone else.

It would be nice to be able to pass her a copy of my data file and know
we

will have no problems sharing data. I can understand if you were sending
tons of discs out... but setting it up for download should not cause too
much trouble... especially if you farm out the download to cnet's
download.com like a lot of other software companies do.

Please consider your older loyal users... I for one feel a bit slighted
that

the newer ones are getting priority.

You run a class act and I know it will be well worth the wait.

Take care

Legacy Deluxe v 6.0.0.190 (latest) allows a search of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) IGI database. Of interest to LDS
people is the baptism, endowment, and sealing dates and temple names.
Question: Will Legacy v 7 continue that lookup ability?
The LDS Church is planning a release of a new searchable database known
as the "New Family Search (NFS)". It is my understanding that the
original IGI will be merged into, or added to, the NFS database.
Question: Will Legacy v 7, now or in the future, interface to that new
family search database?

[LegacyUG] Ver 7 Source List question

2008-05-26 Thread Dede Holden
I received my CD and manual for Ver. 7 last week. First I want to say
thanks to the programmers for keeping the things that work! At first,
I thought I had messed up the installation because the Family View
looks just like Ver. 6 and works like Ver 6. Thankfully, we don't
have to go back to the beginning to learn how to use the program.

Here's my question:
I'm beginning to look at converting my sources. I must say the new
Source Writer templates are wonderful. I created a new master source
for the 1830 census. Now in the master source list, I have two
references to the 1830 census. The new one has a dot just to the left
of the source name. I combined my old 1830 census master source with
the new one. The new source was retained and the dot stayed beside
the name. Is this the way we can tell which of our sources have been
written based on the new templates? I sure hope so. It will make it
easy to see which ones need to be converted. I've tried to find this
in the manual and the help files, but couldn't find a specific
reference to the meaning of the dot to the left of the source name.

Has anyone else figured this out?

Geoff...

When are your "Legacy" -- Legacy users going to see v7? It seems like
the
New User Crowd is getting priority over your long time, faithful
supportive

users.

Legacy's v7 Mapping requires Internet Explorer 7.0 to be installed. If
you

are seeing a blank white screen, this is the reason. There should have
been
a message the first time you ran mapping giving you this information.

Jess,
I too had the same problem ~ I closed everything down and reopened
Legacy,
found where I needed to enter my customer number and than went to
Legacy
Home Tab and updated from there. It doesn't look much different to me
than
V6, but I am a fairly new user of Legacy and so don't know about all
the
bells and whistles yet. I cannot yet find the source conversion tool
and I

too cannot get the new map feature to work.

I too received v7.0 in the mail. I'm trying to update from the disk
version to the newly noted version of .38. It keeps telling me it
cannot download the update and to go to the site. I go to the site,
and it tries to download v6's latest upgrade.

HELP!!

Also, when I use the Map my Family tool... the screen is completely
blank where the map should be (and yes, I'm connected to the internet
when I try it). Is that part of the .38 update, is something wrong
with my install, or is it yet to come?

RE: [LegacyUG] Training Videos

2008-05-26 Thread Keith Bage
I can't see any sign of "new" videos being sold. Where do you see this?

I'm glad I waited for your reply. At least my initial thoughts
concerning mothers and daughters-in-law were somewhat off the mark :-)

RE: [LegacyUG] v7 update to 7.0.0.38

2008-05-26 Thread ronald ferguson

Jessica,

Re: your last paragraph.

I'm surprised it took so long for the maps to appear - could it be that you are
low on memory as Legacy 7 does demand more memory.

When opened, the mapping will auto enter the pins for the locations which it
knows. The others you will need to enter manually. If you have the latitudes
and longitudes then these will be respected - and are likely to be more
accurate than the auto-generated locations..
