Re: [LegacyUG] New Member

2008-09-18 Thread Gary Templeman

Welcome. You seem to have some complex issues but I will give it a stab.

First, I do not think you should import the GED you made. The likely result
of that is to create duplicate individuals and make an even bigger mess.

For the siblings that are now half brothers and sisters, you probably have
some linked as children of the correct mother and some with the unknown. So
I think you need to unlink them from the parents. Then fix the parent
relationship. I have no idea how it is possible to have a duplicate RIN, but
unlink the unknown wife and then delete that record. (Or merge the two) Then
link the children back correctly to the father with the one and only correct
wife.

I would need to know more about your existing file and the names you
received to advise you how best to incorporate the new information and
minimize the amount of merging.

Oops I thought when this is my first post from the group. LOL

Good Day All,

I am new to the group and wish to introduce myself and also ask for Legacy
Help.

My name is Laquita Belinfante, but have been known by my nickname 'Lucky'
all my life.

I am new to all of this, Legacy is the first family tree program I have
used (previously it was pieces of paper), and to complicate matters I am
not all the PC literate either. So I sincerely hope you folk are up to the
challenge.

PROBLEM

I need to merge 2 files. I was typing up information sent me by post the
256 names later discovered that I was typing up the sibling of an existing
family in my own tree.
I tried the drag and drop method but it made the siblings half brothers
and sisters. If this had succeeded I would have to do it another 253
times. I have also ended up with 2 spouses for the father, the correct one
and an unknown one with the same RIN # as the correct wife. I went to the
help button and then I was completely lost.
I then created a GED file. just to save the information. I have also
backed up both family files.

I cannot make head or tails of the merge instructions and was wondering if
I could import my GED file to connect with the existing one in my family
tree, and what to do with RIN # s, as I already have numbers 1 to 256 on
my own tree.

Please will someone, in the simplest way help me sort this mess out.

Lucky

Re: [LegacyUG] Separating out a single line

2008-09-18 Thread JLB
Obviously, you need to choose only the people you want. The program
can't guess that which is why you keep coming up with everyone. If you
look toward the bottom of the Gedcom export box there's a button there
called 'Record Selection'. You can choose Focus Group (i.e. descendants
of a particular person) and define a list. If you've tagged a group of
people beforehand you can choose that tag number. Then carry on with
the rest.

RE: [LegacyUG] SourceWrite Template - IGI - Questions

2008-09-18 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Dan:

I don't see that the template would necessarily restrict you to just two
people. If you're sourcing a transcribed *church record* you could put
'John Jones baptism (1908)' in the Subject Last Name field, transcribe or
abstract the record (including the film number) under the Text/Comments tab
and attach it to any pertinent individuals or events. If you're referring
to a record submitted by a church member or perhaps a listing from the
Ancestral File, then I think you want something like p. 347 and would
probably use a template line Family Group Sheet > Privately held, although
there might be another template that could work better.

Subject: [LegacyUG] SourceWrite Template - IGI - Questions

Hi Listers,

Concerning the SourceWriter template: "Church records > LDS Genealogical
Compilations > International Genealogical Index > Online database."

I am looking for suggestions on how others might be using this template,
specifically concerning the following points:

1. This template is set up for citing an IGI record with one event (i.e.:
birth, marriage, or death, etc.) with a date and place. What is suggested
for an IGI record that contains multiple events and places?

2. This template is set up for citing an IGI record with information for as
many as two individuals in the "one" event (as referred to above). What is
suggested for an IGI records when more persons are mentioned (main
individual, parent(s), and a spouse)? -- Also, what is suggested when
multiple events and multiple persons are mentioned in the same record?

Note: I do know the IGI is not considered a "reliable" source and generally
should only be used as a clue or perhaps as a pointer to original sources.
However, as I do have some information from only the IGI, of which I may
well never locate original documents, I am looking for some way of
documenting these IGI records with the new SourceWriter template --
hopefully in accordance with Mills, page 348, item 7.34. :-)

Thanks for any suggestions,
Dan Bateham

RE: [LegacyUG] Lost Menus [was Divorced? ]

Bill,

Please start a new thread for a new subject, apart from creating havoc for the
users who sort by subject, from your point of view your question may be missed
by somebody who may be able to answer.

It don't know the answer as there are a number of possible causes, not all due
to Legacy. I would check the following - in order:

1. Have you run a virus check?
2. Shut down Legacy and reopen it
3. Restart your computer
4. Shut down your computer, leave for (say) 10mins and restart
5. Reinstall Legacy

No doubt others can add to the list but there's my 5 pence worth.

Re: [LegacyUG]

2008-09-18 Thread Carl Cox
Michelle, Drag and Drop works very will. Use the Split Screen view, with
each file showing, then drag a person from one file and drop him on the same
person on the other file. (Legacy merge works very well, and preserves
links. It is easier to leave your husband on both files, then merge.) You
will be asked who you want to import in addition to the one you moved, and
you have several options.

Use another copy of both files to experiment with, and if it doesn't work
you can just dump the result.

Legacy often has several ways to do something, one of it's great strengths.

2008-09-18 Thread ronald ferguson

Michele,

I'm going off memory here, but I think the source you are referring to is a
source for the compiler of the imported file(s) (eg. yourself). Including this
does not change the sources in the imported file but adds what you state to be
the source of the import files in the unspecified field for all your sources.

Re: [LegacyUG] combining two files

2008-09-18 Thread Leon Chapman
Yes, all your sources will be imported.
If you have duplicate people in both databases, Legacy will try to
automatically merge those people and the ones is cannot merge it will let
you determine whether to merge them. This is why you need to backup your
original file before you start this merge process. I would not recommend
using a master source when importing -- that will add a source to everyone
in your imported file. Do that in Legacy ahead of time before you import if
you want a master source say added to each name field.

RE: [LegacyUG] combining two files

2008-09-18 Thread Roger Jarrett
When you import all the info and sources are brought in. The option to
assign an autosource allows you to say where the data came from. It adds an
extra source to the data. I used to ignore this when I imported and only
later came to realise how important it was to identify where the data came
from. I am now having to go back and retrospectively add the information, a
mammoth task :(.

[LegacyUG] New Member

2008-09-18 Thread Lucky Belinfante

i dont want emails from you

Oops I thought when this is my first post from the group. LOL

Good Day All,

I am new to the group and wish to introduce myself and also ask for Legacy
Help.

My name is Laquita Belinfante, but have been known by my nickname 'Lucky'
all my life.

I am new to all of this, Legacy is the first family tree program I have used
(previously it was pieces of paper), and to complicate matters I am not all
the PC literate either. So I sincerely hope you folk are up to the
challenge.

PROBLEM

I need to merge 2 files. I was typing up information sent me by post the 256
names later discovered that I was typing up the sibling of an existing
family in my own tree.
I tried the drag and drop method but it made the siblings half brothers and
sisters. If this had succeeded I would have to do it another 253 times. I
have also ended up with 2 spouses for the father, the correct one and an
unknown one with the same RIN # as the correct wife. I went to the help
button and then I was completely lost.
I then created a GED file. just to save the information. I have also backed
up both family files.

I cannot make head or tails of the merge instructions and was wondering if I
could import my GED file to connect with the existing one in my family tree,
and what to do with RIN # s, as I already have numbers 1 to 256 on my own
tree.

Please will someone, in the simplest way help me sort this mess out.

Lucky

Subject: [LegacyUG] Divorced?

Before I accidently reset my customizations, if a person was divorced it
would have the word (divorced) on the family view next to the marriage
date/place. How do I get that back? I can't find where I can change it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Divorced? AND the new Legacy book

2008-09-18 Thread Thomas Herson
I'm so glad a couple of posted have posted how to do this. I had been
wondering.

Incidentally I just got Mark Lang's new book on Legacy and the Companion
Software. At a quick glance it appears to be very well done!!!

Go to Options, Customize, Select "View Tab" - in lower right corner - Show
Status - check on marriage info, on children & Don't show married.

Re: [LegacyUG] combining two files

2008-09-18 Thread Bert van Kootwijk

You can also import a Legacy file direct into an existing file.
File > Import From > Legacy file.
You can find a lot about this subject in the Help. Look for Import a Legacy
file

Michele,

Basically, you need to use File>Export>Legacy and then Import into your
file. Set to import to your file with s starting RIN greater than the last
in your file. I guess your husband is in both files so you will need to
merge him into the husband in your current file and ant other duplicates.

entire file into my file.

How can I import the ENTIRE file including the location lists, event list,
SOURCES, etc?
