Re: [LegacyUG] Question re practicing file

2008-10-29 Thread Reg SHERLOCK
Hello Trish

All the replies seem to have missed the point of your question Trish

Yes you can make new Legacy Family File under the name/s of your choice, (
e.g.: Practice One and Practice Two), and do whatever makes you happy with
these files (Export to Legacy File and/or, Export to Gedcom, Import Gedcom etc.

can then delete the practice files without doing any harm to other Legacy
files.

The main thing to remember is always "BACKUP" your existing family file/s and I
also advise that you be very sure not to practice merging etc with your working
master family file or tears of misery are liable to flow, remember that magic
word "BACKUP".

At any time when you feel you are finished with said practice files you can
delete them without doing any harm to other Legacy files. \

Re: [LegacyUG] A configuration problem regarding Pictures

2008-10-29 Thread Susan Perrett

Ye, I think that did it

I selected the bottom right button, and it changed like you said, and
I Removed them all.

Re- tested and they have all gone away.

Great news - now I will make a note of what to do, next time this
happens and also mention what to do, to our local Legacy Group which
meets monthly.

Thank you so much,

Cheers,

(OK, so it's a teeeny bit of a screwball setup, but after that the
same message will come up for each of your unlinked pictures, so
just keep clicking Remove. They WILL go away. You may have to run
File Maintenance to compact all deleted records, then Test your
Multimedia paths again. I just ran this whole system on my own

OK, I went and checked the Remove box and Unchecked the Make a list..
after which I was asked a question on each photo as they came up,
and I selected the Let Legacy find the file - I had to do this to

Exactly the same list came up, (in Notepad) as the first list I

here, but not Legacy, so I can't open a gedcom or anything Legacy
specific until I get home tonight.

It would look something like this..

Webster Parish, Louisiana, Blockers Cemetery, Morgan Fred
Webster Parish, Louisiana, Blockers Cemetery, Morgan Florence Basinger
Webster Parish, Louisiana, Springhill Cemetery, Allen Gertrude
Webster Parish, Louisiana, Springhill Cemetery, Allen Delphia

Etc.. (and also include any other data you would want, such as

The easiest way is to browse to your Legacy data file in windows explorer, highlite the file named
your_name_here.fdb, hit CTRL C, CTRL V and you will have a file called copy of your_name_here.fdb.
Rename the copy to TESTFILE.FDB, so there is no mistaking it, and you can experiment on it to your
heart's content. As a bonus, you will be seeing what the results look like on your own information.

Work on a copy. Just make sure when you open Legacy you're using the
'Copy of' file, not your original. Put a backup of your original away
somewhere so you don't misuse it.

If you change Legacy settings while you're working on the copy, that
would probably 'stick' so what I would do is make a backup of my entire
Legacy directory to bring back after I've finished experimenting. If
you have an external hard-drive or flash-drive, send your entire Legacy
directory (look down your folder list in Windows Explorer to find it, if
you're using Windows) and send a copy of it far away for safe-keeping.
You can overwrite your experiment when you're ready to come back.

cemeteries and I'd still have to go back and search each one for the
people. If Legacy would 'just' add all the Address fields to Search and
Print, we'd be there.

Actually, you can. Excel has the ability to split a delimited cell (your
"City, County") over two columns. Details here:

Re: [LegacyUG] looking for cems

2008-10-29 Thread Jessica Morgan
I'm curious to know if some of the responses here are mistaking
Country for County? In my Legacy 7.0 deluxe, you can query by Country,
but not County. County isn't even an option.

To further complicate the issue, I tried various search strings and
methods last night on my file, and could not return any results at all
on queries having anything to do with Burial Locations. -- That could
very well be an operator error, but it was problematic, and will be a
serious issue for me, none the less.

I queried, in multiple fashions, for Blockers Cemetery in Webster
Parish, Louisiana.

My burial address shows it as
Blockers Cemetery
City: Sarepta
State: Louisiana

In the burial location I have it listed as: Sarepta, Webster, Louisiana

I queried for Burial place contains: Webster
This returned approximately 10 persons. -- Incorrect

I queried for Burial address contains: Blockers
This returned zero results - incorrect

I queried for Burial Address contains: Sarepta
This returned zero results - incorrect

In reality I have over 30 persons in a 300+ person file that are
buried in Blockers Cemetery, city of Sarepta, Webster Parish, state of
Louisiana.

Nothing, absolutely nothing I did last night returned accurate results.

Futhermore, when I queried Burial place contains Webster -- I have
four known cemeteries in this parish, not just the one it returned.
(all 10 people returned above are in Blockers Cemetery, it did not
return anyone in the other three)

Are the spouses sorted in order. That may not fix exactly, but is the 'normal'
order. To get them to sort in blended age order, you have to make the spouses
additional parents, which can get messy on its own.

Re: [LegacyUG] looking for cems

2008-10-29 Thread JLB
I have no idea of whether this is a search I would want to do 'often'.
Things come up as they do and then I'm looking for ways to do them.
Tomorrow will bring a different challenge for sure. I realize there are
different places to put addresses than in the actual Address field that
work better (who would have guessed?) - Master Location list, Burial
field, or make a separate event. The short point is that, with
everything else on my plate right now and for the foreseeable future, it
would not be a priority for me to spend the requisite thousands of hours
to move all my addresses. I'm biding my time thinking Legacy may get
around to fixing this situation long before I have the time to resort my
database to suit the parts that they've left out.

I can get a similar list quite easily. What I'm looking for is a way
to sort that list by cemetery. In one of my 'counties' I have dozens
of different cemeteries. I can pick them out one by one by going
through 500 or so entries in the Master Event Address list. I'm just
looking for a shortcut. I think several people have tried it now and
the general consensus is that it's beyond Legacy's abilities.

If this is a sort of search you are likely to want to make quite
often, perhaps you should consider putting full addresses into the
Location field instead of using the Address fields.

Yes! I know this is against best database practice and as Event
Address and the other Address fields are there in Legacy it seems to
make sense to use them. However, I have recently been converted from
that idea to the idea of using only Location fields (it's very useful
for the mapping function as well).

From time to time people ask LUGgers if/how they can do something in
Legacy and the answer is that they can, but by adopting a different
method. Very often in such cases, the discussion ends with someone
saying that the Legacy programmers should re-write some part of the
program. I think it might be more realistic for us users to adapt our
working methods a little.

There! I suspect I have just said something rather controversial -
follow-ups should prove interesting!

Once the search is done, you go to the print option.
Set up your field that you want to show in the report, burial place is
not a default I do not believe so you change one of the other fields
to the burial place.

Then you select to print to a csv - which you can open in excel. In
you excel file you do a sort by burial location & there you have a
wonderful burial report by cemetery. And in my case often I have the
plot # and such in the location field as well so those buried in the
same plot show together. This is the list I use to make sure I don't
forget anyone when taking pictures at a cemetery. In a test one I
just did, I can see where I need to clean up the way I entered some.
I can email to someone if they want to see the example.

This will give you what you are looking for.

Further if you want to do individual reports you can split the csv
after the sort.
You can also go back into the search feature and have it just search
for burial place contains blank cemetery name
When you do this clink - search only the search list - don't leave it
on the clear list before this search.

This is a way to continually narrow down a list.

RE: [LegacyUG] looking for cems

2008-10-29 Thread Syble Glasscock
Yes, I do use the + add burial pictures, but this is not my choice.  If I don't
have a personal picture, I put a picture of that person's tombstone(when I have
one) which shows up on the "Family View" and websites etc.
The only other way I've found to get a tombstone picture to be included on
the website creation is by creating an event for it, and I don't like that, I
think that's too much repetition.
This is just my opinion, I can't see that it would be a big deal to have a
tiny icon showing for the tombstone.   I like having a photo of the tombstone,
and many times I have gone to cemeteries with a list of photos I want, only
later to find that there is another family member buried in that same cemetery,
and I may make a note of that then forget about it..  Having an icon in Legacy
for it would help remind me than my research is not complete in that area if I

No, I was *not* referring to Addresses. I was responding to the
message from Syble (which was included in my message) where she said
her dream was for Legacy to add an icon for use in attaching a photo
of the tombstone marker.

Re: [LegacyUG] looking for cems

2008-10-29 Thread JLB
There's a problem with your solution. There's no such thing as a county
field in the Address. There's only city/state. When I write the
county in, I put city, county on the city line and then state on the
next. Therefore I can't sort by county in a spreadsheet. But I can
search the text document (as you describe) for the county name and get a
list that way. (By the way, my list is 58 cemeteries in that county,
not the approximately 25 I was imagining) put that list on one monitor
and go back to Legacy on the other monitor and print out the people for
each cemetery. Not only is that very long and inefficient, (even with
dual monitors) but for the person I'm making this report for, it would
require them to print out about 20 times more paper than they would have
to if I was able to print off one compacted spreadsheet with a listing
as I describe below. Overall it would probably take less time for
Legacy to add the missing fields to Print options in the Name List.

If you go to Master Lists > Master Event Lists > Options > Print, you
are given the option to print to a text file. Under the tab "Who to
print" select event addresses. Under the tab "What to print" select
all the check bxes that you need. Then select the radio button for a
text file output and check "with quotes" and "group fields on one
line". Press create and you will have a text file you can open in
Excel or OO Scalc. you can then sort on the county fiels and you
should be able to create a list of cemeteries grouped by county,as I
understand that you include the county as address line 2. You still
will have to go back and print the individual lists of people using
each cemetery but that should help streamline the process. You can
save the resulting cemetery list and add to it as you add cemeteries.

Re: [LegacyUG] looking for cems

2008-10-29 Thread Brenda Halseth

This can be done without to much fuss.
Use the search feature.
Example - Search for Indiv - burial place - contains - County name.

Once the search is done, you go to the print option.
Set up your field that you want to show in the report, burial place is not a
default I do not believe so you change one of the other fields to the burial
place.

Then you select to print to a csv - which you can open in excel. In you
excel file you do a sort by burial location & there you have a wonderful
burial report by cemetery. And in my case often I have the plot # and such
in the location field as well so those buried in the same plot show
together. This is the list I use to make sure I don't forget anyone when
taking pictures at a cemetery. In a test one I just did, I can see where I
need to clean up the way I entered some. I can email to someone if they
want to see the example.

This will give you what you are looking for.

Further if you want to do individual reports you can split the csv after the
sort.
You can also go back into the search feature and have it just search for
burial place contains blank cemetery name
When you do this clink - search only the search list - don't leave it on the
clear list before this search.

This is a way to continually narrow down a list.

Yes I do want a listing of the people, but I want them
sorted by
cemetery. I can get a list of people buried in xyz county
but I cannot
get a list of people sorted by cemetery, county, state.
Apparently there
is no way to print a list that includes the cemetery names
since I keep
the cemetery names under Burial Address.

Play with a copy of your .fdb file. To make it easier on yourself, give

As I think you know, that is how I do it. However I can sympathise with JLB and

To comment on your other email on this subject, I have contacted JLB off-list

It's not quite as simple as that! If you opened your Family File in
Access or OO Base you would find that it comprises about 28 files and it
isn't always immediately obvious what information is stored in each
file.

Unless you are quite comfortable working with relational databases, I
wouldn't advise "playing around" with Legacy. Of course, if you decide
to do so you will back up your Family File first, won't you?!

What's mdb?

It's the native format of Access databases. The Legacy family file is
actually an fdb (.fdb) file but you can open it in Access(1) by putting
*.fdb or *.* into the name box when looking for the file, or entering
the full name of it directly. By default, Access looks for a range of
extension not including .fdb).

(1) Presumably also in OO Base, but I have never attempted to do so,
only used Access. Word of warning, though - I have read that there is -
or was - some problem with saving Base files in Access format. Someone
with more experience - Ron? - can perhaps advise if there is any problem
opening a file in Legacy which has been altered in Base.

Joan,
I add unconnected people to my main file as "New Unlinked
Individuals" with
all the info I have on them and Sources. If I find others who are related
to them but not to my main tree, I link them also. They will appear as a
separate tree which you can view by selecting View>Tree Finder. When or if
you do find a link to your main tree, it is simple to link them and all the
data and sources you've entered will be there.

Hope this helps.

RE: [LegacyUG] Report Question

2008-10-29 Thread Christine Pearce
I LOVE this idea! Also, would LOVE to have the ability to colour text for
event notes, or perhaps change the typeface/font. For example, I transcribe
obituaries rather than showing the associated picture of the newspaper
clipping (because you can't specify individual picture sizes). The ability
to colour the text differently from the standard text of birth, death,
marriage events, etc. would make the obit text stand out as quoted text. I
toyed with making obit text in italics, but a lot of italic text is
difficult to read.

This might be a place for an enhancement to the printing options in
Legacy: be able to define printing colors by line as we can define colors
by line in Family View - blue is Grandpa A, green is Grandpa B, etc.

This would make printing at home much more expensive for some people - but
some of us have printers with separate ink tanks for each color which
means that color printing is only slightly more expensive than black (some
Canon and Epson models). If you were having the book printed at Kinko's
or the like, you would need to see what their prices are for color versus
black.

Whether other people would want/use this option is something Legacy would
have to determine. I think it's probably the easiest way for a child (and
some adults) to follow the lines in a text format.

And if the child has a Grandpa Greene, be sure that line is printed in
green ;-)
