I remember reading your original post. It was confusing because it kept
mentioning rootsweb. Is the problem happening during a basic GEDCOM 5.5
export? You can't do an export to a .ged (regardless of how you intend
to use the .ged)?

Have you tried exporting the problem database to a new Legacy database
first? Any errors when you do this?

General population stats, however, make it clear that you and Daddy are a

Hence the stereotype. g

 Red,

Well, I guess the age distribution of the Legacy population is probably
weighted towards the higher end, but I would advise against stereotyping, as
you will find many who have been able to write about, talk about and
actually program from the early days of DOS, and still do so today.

Like many, I may be long in the tooth, (or should it really be short in the
gums?), but I, like the others I mentioned, am fortunate to possess
faculties which are still rather less tham impaired.

You see, it is quite possible to infer from your post that you are promoting
the common misapprehension(?) held by those whose skills have been honed in
the (more?) challenging world of industry regarding difficulty experienced
by those isolated in their ivory towers from the pressures of having to
 expand their horizons.

Not, of course that I would ever suggest such a thing :-)

Not having taken the time to read the latest reviews of the strength of
the various firewalls available, I am unable to accurately answer your
question. I would guess that the Wireless Router's firewall is
 sufficiently protecting you.

Actually, the point of my post was directed at folks that use their
computer for online genealogical work. I'm assuming that many are middle
age and older. And I am assuming that, therefore, many have limited
computer skills and/or knowledge - given that they learned how to use
computers late in life. My stereotype developed from a long experience at
my primary job with my school district (now retired) which was to teach
teachers (many middle aged and older) and community members how to use
 computers.

So, I hesitated to even mention a firewall. Just getting most folks to
have Windows updated on a reliable basis is an accomplishment. The
astounding number of zombie computers worldwide continues is testimony
that many do not implement these security measures.

If I were to get into detailing the scheduling of deep system scans, scans
for rootkits, spyware, etc. - I feared that I'd get the same reaction that
I have in the past when too much stuff was thrown at my stereotyped group.
 [http://gfx2.hotmail.com/mail/w3/ltr/i_safe.gif] I hope that I'm not
offending anyone with this take on things. I'm a new member to the Legacy
User Group, and a new user of Legacy, so I'm not sure how many use this
user group. All of this has probably been said here before, but since the
security of I.E. arose, I thought it would be a good time interject.
 Please excuse if I've overstepped!

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 3163, Take 2...

2008-12-20 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
Roxanne, this is apparently a Microsoft Access error, Access being the
underlying program Legacy uses. A Google search turns up a solution for
another program, but it indicates Error 3163 is an AddToHistory function
error. Have you tried any of the options under File Maintenance other than
Check/Repair? One of the options I see is Set File Sorting Order. I do not
know whether this would fix your problem, but the procedure rebuilds all
internal indexes. Logic tells me that if you have an AddToHistory error,
rebuilding the indexes may prove useful. (or it may not). In any case, make
sure you have a good backup.

Hello again. I'm still having trouble with Error 3163, but have since
discovered a few things that narrow it down.

In the beginning, I would attempt to export my file to a GEDCOM 5.5 file,
as I usually do once a month. While exporting individuals, I would get
this message:

Error 3163: The field is too small to accept the amount of data you
attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data.

Would you like to TRY IT AGAIN?

If I click yes, the message repeats forever. If I click quit, the
program closes, as I would expect. If I click no, the message may repeat
once again further along in the process, but the export finishes up like
normal.

I ran a File check/repair, and nothing changed. I maintain 4 separate
family files, working on 1 for about a week before updating the current
file online at Rootsweb. Then I switch to another file for a week. The
only reason this is relevant to the situation is this: about 3 weeks ago,
I got a message when I opened a file that it was in an older format, and
needed to be updated to the newer format in order to be usable. I have
kept up with Legacy 7 updates right along. Up to now, I have updated 2
family files, and these are the 2 with which I'm having trouble.

I have sent a bug report to Legacy, although I don't know that this is
actually a bug. The only thing different is the updating of the files to
the newer format. Connected?

You did good. Based on this article...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;896950

... the problem you are seeing is probably a bug, maybe introduced with
a recent program update. I would also send support a copy of the .fdb
file you are having the problem with along with a step-by-step set of
instructions explaining how to reproduce the error.

According to http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/RevisionHistory7.asp, there
were some GEDCOM related fixes made in the 28 Nov build, so maybe this
had something to do it. When did you first start having the problem?

P.S. There is a new build out today (20 Dec), but I don't see any GEDCOM
stuff in the release notes.

[LegacyUG] Family Search .org String

Right, I made a mistake the other day... I modified the Family Search string
instead of ADDING a new one.  Now I'm unable to figure out the search string.

Can one of you provide me with the search string again please.

The search string for FamilySearchLabs works great though...

Try this search string (remember, no spaces):

Use default Data Prep field:
