Re: [LegacyUG] A question about Sourcing
Phil, I concur with Kirsten. I have several different newspapers as sources. In my Master List they are named Newspaper:Jackson Daily News, etc. This does indeed help you to quickly see if you already have a newspaper listed as a Master Source. I do the same thing with Books, Letters, Military Records, among others. I am sure I don't have as many sources as some on this list, but right now, this system is working for me. (By the way, I consider myself to be a splumper, splitting some sources and lumping others.) I'd like to hear if someone has a different view and why, especially if they have a large number of sources. RE: [LegacyUG] A question about Sourcing
Oh, Dede, not another word to learn - a splumper LOL! I'm afraid that I may not really qualify, certainly not with newspapers for which I only have one Master Source. I have not had to add one since the new source writer templates came out, but if I cannot find one that I can use/modify so that the name of the paper goes in the Detail then I'll stick with the old format. Re: [LegacyUG] A question about Sourcing
I consider myself middle of the road, but may lean more toward splitting than lumping, though I think there must be extreme lumpers (putting all newspapers in one source would be an extreme lumper IMO) and extreme splitters (making a separate master source for each census household would be an extreme splitter). I recently spent a lot of time cleaning up the mess I've made all these years by not having a consistent method for naming sources (and by importing my database into Legacy several years ago from another program). I did something similar to what Dede and Kirsten suggested, except that I used primarily a locality based naming pattern, e.g. Illinois - Wayne Co. Cemetery Records, Illinois - Wayne Co. Newspapers, etc.. This tells me a lot at a glance about the quality/thoroughness of my research in a specific locality. The exceptions were things like Correspondence and Military records (which in the US are mostly at a national level), and items that are strictly surname based. My point is: if you lean toward splitting and do thorough research, you will probably eventually have hundreds of sources, so choose a naming/categorization method that makes sense to you and use it consistently. Otherwise, you may end up with the same source entered multiple times under different names, and have to spend several days cleaning it up, like I just did. If you're an extreme lumper, though, you have it easy: just call it Newspapers g Connie --- On Mon, 12/22/08, Dede Holden deanbuc...@gmail.com wrote: From: Dede Holden deanbuc...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] A question about Sourcing To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Date: Monday, December 22, 2008, 11:48 AM Phil, I concur with Kirsten. Re: [LegacyUG] linking siblings without parents
John, They obviously all had a father and a mother, so even though you don't know who those people were, they still existed. Therefore, I'd create a father with the same surname as the siblings, leave first name and all other unknown details blank, and then (if you wish) you could also create a mother with no details given. You could also marry these people, although you don't know that for sure, but it may help your research at a later date. When I have details missing for someone in a case like this, I'd often write something like the following in the blank first name field: [[Father/Mother of Margaret/Thomas/Owen Surname]] Ensure to leave the square brackets [[ ]] there, as this means that the information contained therein will only show on screen, but not on any printouts (unless you choose to show private information). I know I had acase where I didn't know what surname to put for the father. (the kids were sometimes under McCaslin, and sometimes under Caslin - so I didn't know what the father used.) - I know that I was able to create parents that were both unknown (with creating real records) - and link all the siblings to them.If you need me to re-figure out how I did it, let me know. But generally I would do what everyone else said - create a father with the surname and link the kids to him. *** Holiday discounts on Legacy 7.0, add-ons, books, and more. I tried a number of reports with that option checked. One of them worked fine. Others I tried had a superimposed image of the title page on the first page of the report rather than a separate title page. A. Adell Leon Chapman wrote: Margaret: Mine is working fine. RE: [LegacyUG] Descendant book report (register/modified reg) bug
I had the same problem. I tested it several times with different databases and it occurred consistently. But just when I un-clicked the printing of the title page. I too have sent in a bug report. [LegacyUG] Merging basic style source to sourcrewriter
In the previous build (7.0.0.55) I did several merges of old style to soucewriter census sources. On the first merge I knew it obviously involved some risk but I had backup. I was pleasantly surprised at the results, multimedia attached properly and text comments in correct place. I couldn't imagine the long awaited source conversion tool could possibly do any better. Now with build 76 I'm no longer permitted to merge old style to soucewriter. I hope this means the source conversion tool's release is imminent. If not I am very upset with Legacy for removing this option to merge. -- Richard Van Wasshnova http://www.gencircles.com/users/vanwasshnova http://gw.geneanet.org/vanwasshnova *** Holiday discounts on Legacy 7.0, add-ons, books, and more. Re: [LegacyUG] one file or many?
I have 4 separate files, with good reason. The first file is mine. #2 belongs to my half-sister, which concentrates solely on her dad's family. He was my stepfather, but I have no desire to connect him to MY family line, due to personal reasons. File #3 is my kids' father's line. My ex and I parted on lousy terms, and I'm sure that he would be more than a little peeved if he knew I was researching HIS family at all. I do it for our kids, not him. File #4 is my youngest son's father's family. Again, I do it for our son. His dad's family has no interest in data on my family. The same is true of my family. An interesting aside: I found out through my research that my little one's dad and I are 8th cousins, once removed. So even without our son's connection, we are related! To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Date: Sunday, December 21, 2008, 10:36 PM I recently decided to use Legacy as my genealogy program of choice. The decision was made after examining a number of reviews which spoke highly of the program. My decision was solidified when I learned that Map My Ancestors would utilize the gedcom tags for lat and lon values generated in Legacy. I certainly dont regret the decision. A major bonus has been an active and informative and helpful users group. Much of the work I have done over the last number of years has been working on a one name study. Here is an issue I am facing. I have many family groups in my study, seperated by geography and brick walls ;-) If you were in my position would you build one data base with many disconnected family units or would it more logical to have seperate files for each group?
