[LegacyUG] Merging Files

2009-11-09 Thread Colin Liddell
I am in the process of merging two files and have a number of persons who
married twice.

In the Merging two Individuals Window I have as an example, John SMITH in
the left hand pane and John SMITH on the right hand pane.

John in the left is married to Mary Jones and they have four children.
In the right John is married Alice BROWN with two children.
Now.I know that in both panes, John is the same person with two
different families.

QuestionDo I a: Click on Merge right into Left or do I
 b: Click Skip to next?
If a: Does Legacy create a second marriage or does that happen if I click
Skip to next?

I have looked in the help file and the manual and cannot find the answer to
this, no doubt it is there, I just cannot find it.{;-)

I look forward to any help with this query.

Colin.

2009-11-09 Thread Linda McCauley
Sherry,
Bing Maps seems to be working fine for me (finds locations and gives
directions) but I'm having the same problems as the others from within
Legacy on both my XP desktop and Vista laptop (using IE8 on both).
I've never had a problem with mapping before this.

I think you’ve hit on it, Todd. Legacy’s mapping calls up Bing (was Virtual
Earth) and if there are problems with that website, you'll encounter
problems using the mapping in Legacy.

If you're having problems with Legacy's mapping, go directly to Bing/Virtual
Earth and see if there are problems on the MS website.

RE: [LegacyUG] Master Location List help

2009-11-09 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
Interesting. I seem to be on the exact opposite end of the current mapping
problems (or lack thereof). Prior to last week, if I got to the Master
Location List by using the blue triangle thingie next to a location from the
Individual's Information window (or Marriage Information), the map would
never come up. However, if I used the menu item, View/Master lists/Location,
then the map would come up. The difference is that getting to the Master
Location list from the menu would start with the topmost blank item
selected. From there, I could select any location and the map would zoom to
that location as expected. I figured it was a bug that would eventually be
addressed.

Suddenly last week, I noticed the map working as expected regardless of how
I got to the Master Location List. I know Microsoft was having some problems
with the roll-out of Bing and I just figured those problems were continuing
until last week. As it stands right now, the Bing map feature is working
perfectly.

No complaints here.

Re: [LegacyUG] Heritage Collector Suite offer

2009-11-09 Thread Kramer
Angela, I was just going to ask the same question. One of my co-
workers just used iMovie on a Mac computer with photos to make an
awesome presentation. I wonder how this differs. I also wonder if it
user friendly and worth the money. There are other ways to organize
photos and family members might like the bubble IDs of family members
but they might also like to see a clean photo without that. Legacy
has a photo center to store photos, it's just organizing the links to
the photos that is the issue, I believe. I too was wondering for that
price if I should pass or not since I don't know anyone who has used
it yet.

There are other times when the year is one of two, such as regnal years.

To enter 15 March 1806-1807, be sure to enter the full years - 1086-1087.

Using 1086/87 will not work unless the within the double-dating period.

double dating isn't working in that century. I have run File
Maintenance Check/Repair several times since discovered. Have
completely removed and retyped date. If add / and two numbers, just
reverts to the second number. If I use one number that ends up at the
beginning of the date. Have checked my settings and they seem ok. Can
anyone reproduce this?

I am using Vista and Legacy 7.0.0.109.

RE: [LegacyUG] entering royal titles

The best guideline I've seen for this situation is _Getting It Right_ by
Mary H. Slawson. (I bought my copy from the Legacy store.) Slawson has a
full 100 pages on how to handle names and titles using Legacy screens for
her examples. Although many people make up their own rules for entering
this data, Slawson's book is heavily oriented toward LDS members doing
temple work, so perhaps following her suggestions would bring up more hits
in the IGI or other LDS databases.

The guidelines are far too extensive to quote here, so I'd suggest you
invest in the book.

I'm having a problem searching for IGI names. I haven't been able to find
any guidance on how to enter royal titles into genealogy programs.
Typically royals don't have formal surnames prior to the early 1900's so
where exactly do you put their title? Do you put the entire title as their
surname, i.e, Duke of Windsor? Do you break it up - Prefix: Duke Suffix:
of Windsor.
I've noticed that if I use the IGI search, I get a lot of zero results. But
if I go to the family search site I get results for the same person.
Example, I have Ferdinand Karl Archduke of Austria in my database, entered
as First Name: Ferdinand Karl , Surname:Archduke of Austria. IGI search in
Legacy returns zero hits. If I go to the website and enter First Name:
Ferdinand Karl Archduke of Surname:Austria I get 3 results. However, not
all records are like that.

I'm confusedWhat is the actual standard for this?

You'll probably get lots of suggestions and things get complicated with the
Windsor's. In 1917, the name House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was changed
to House of Windsor by King George V (Edward's son), largely because of
anti-German sentiment during WW I.

So Edward VII (son of Queen Victoria) and his son, George V (until his
1917 proclamation), ruled as the House of SCG. In 1917, however, George V
issued this proclamation: "Now, therefore, We, out of Our Royal Will and
Authority, do hereby declare and announce that as from the date of this Our
Royal Proclamation Our House and Family shall be styled and known as the House
and Family of Windsor, and that all the descendants in the male line of Our
said Grandmother Queen Victoria who are subjects of these Realms, other
than female descendants who may marry or may have married, shall bear the
said Name of Windsor..."

Thus, Edward VIII, later Duke of Windsor and son of Edward VII, had the
royal surname of "Windsor". You could reasonably use "Windsor" as the royal
surname and use the suffix field to denote his two titles: King Edward
VIII, later Duke of Windsor.

In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II reaffirmed George V's proclamation and managed
to make this situation even more complicated. Some of her descendants are
"Windsor", but others are "Montbatten-Windsor".

As for the Archduke of Austria, I believe he was of the House of Habsburg.

I'm sure others will have better suggestions; as I said previously, things
can get complicated.

RE: [LegacyUG] entering royal titles

2009-11-09 Thread CE Wood
There is no standard, even among the most reputable genealogists. There are
continuous debates among them. Remember, PLANTAGENET is not a surname.

The important thing is to have in your files as many of the different names
a person is known by. That does mean much searching, but that is the
research necessary when dealing with titles, especially pre-1600 ones. And,
spellings are all over the place too, so familiarity with those variants
helps too.

Legacy allows a person to be entered in many different ways, the main reason
I switched ages ago. For instance, you can enter (surname in CAPS):
Humphrey V de BOHUN, suffix = 1st Earl of Essex
prefix = 1st Earl, Humphrey V de Bohun, of ESSEX
Humphrey de BOHUN, suffix = 2nd Earl of Hereford
prefix = 2nd Earl, Humphrey de Bohun, of HEREFORD

If you show AKAs, you can find the person under BOHUN, HEREFORD, and ESSEX.
This method can also show the succession of titles.

Thanks a bunch
NConway

Re: [LegacyUG] entering royal titles

2009-11-09 Thread Ron Ferguson
There may well be variations in description of names amongst our Royal
Family, but what one needs to know is the family name, or, perhaps more
accurately, the "house" name.

For example George V was born into the House of Windsor and a search for
George Windsor 1865 +/-2 will find his christening.

Double dating only applies for dates after 1582. That was when the
Gregorian Calendar was first introduced.

It has been reported, as Boyd said. It has also been fixed and should be

Obviously #3 hover should say "Remove HTM".
Has this been reported yet as a minor bug?

Re: [LegacyUG] Windows 7

2009-11-09 Thread RUNION ROBERT
I installed Windows 7 Professional over the weekend on my iMac VMware-
Fusion and it is working great. Had a few issues, but after using
some VMware forum tweaks got it to work great. I still wish I could
run Legacy direct on my iMAC, but with Fusion, I seem to be able to
use both PC and Apple items.
