Re: [LegacyUG] help using new source writer
Many thanks again to all of you who have contributed to my question. I think this has been a great exercise and I have learned a lot. Thank you, Anne - Original Message - From: To: Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2009 4:03 PM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] help using new source writer Anne wrote: I would like someone to share with me how they would create a master source (using the new source writer), for a marriage found in the index at this website below. Anne, As Phil said, the Mid Kent database seems well well done. Thus, my next two sentences are not meant to reflect upon the quality of the site. You do not have a marriage record. What you have is a plain-vanilla database that calls for the basic format used for any other database. If you have the Evidence QuickSheet for citing online sources, just follow the "Basic Template" diagrammed on the cover. (The basic guidelines are also there.) For those who don't have the QuickSheet, three bits of "common sense" apply here: 1. A website is a publication, equivalent to a book. 2. A website that has multiple databases is equivalent to a book with chapters authored by different writers and an overall editor. 3. The elements you cite for either type of website correspond to the elements you would cite for a book of one type or the other. Specifically in your case, the database is part of a larger website of a different title. Therefore, it's the equivalent of an individually authored chapter in a book that has multiple authors and an overall editor (e.g.: Ancestry's _The Source_; or GPC's _Professional Genealogy_). Thus, for a footnote or endnote you need to cite the following elements: 1. Author/creator of database (in this case, David Hills) 2. Title of database (in quote marks, i.e., the punctuation typically used for chapter titles) 3. Type of source (db, digital images, article, etc.) 4. Owner/creator of website (the equivalent of the editor who created the book) 5. Title of website (in italics--i.e., the convention for citing titles of publications) 6. Publication data (in parentheses) - Place = URL - Date = Date you access info 7. specific location of information within the publication (i.e, specific entry in a db) Following these basics, a completed reference note to this site would look like this: David Hills, "Mid-Kent Marriages Index 1754-1911," database, Gary Samson, _Woodchurch Ancestry Group_ (http://woodchurchancestry.org.uk/midkentmarriages/index.php : 3 January 2009), entry for Thomas Cook to Frances Kemsley, 15 October 1754, Boxley, Hollingbourne. In ASCII, of course, the underscore before and after means italics. Re: [LegacyUG] help using new source writer
Thanks for the time you took to reply to my question Phil. I understand what you are saying about an index not being an original source. You have helped me debate this issue and I think in time, I will master the source writer. Your ideas have been most helpful. Thanks very much, Anne - Original Message - From: "Phil Husband" To: Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2009 3:43 AM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] help using new source writer Anne, I checked this site and found it well done, interesting and helpful. If you found information on a family that is helpful that is good. However, I don't think you should use an index as a source. There are several reasons an index shouldn't be used. First of all: is what you are seeing exactly as it was in the original church record, or any other record that was used to create the index? Secondly: IMO an index would be best if used as a clue to help you locate the actual record. My suggestion would be to follow up on the information that you found and send for a copy of the actual record, or you might find that LDS has a microfilm of the record in question that you could search at your local LDS library. Having said all of that, in the new Master Source Writer, I would use Church records or Marriage records as the type of source. As you progress through the choices, you'll notice that at no point does it mention the word index but you might find something in each tab that works for you. An alternative might be to use the Basic Style Source Template. I have found the Master Source Writer a little easier to use as I continue to work with it. For example, if I'm working on a census record then I enter a lot of census records so that I develop a pattern and get the feel for how or what I'm supposed to be doing.. As to naming the source I'd suggest: Great Britian, MidKent marriage records or another part of the Website Link. This information from the index might be best kept under the tab *Research* until you have the actual data closest to when the original was entered in a church register. Re: [LegacyUG] event sentence override
Thanks for your reply Susan. It would seem there isn't a great solution for this. Amazing when you think you can search and find one specific word in a note section of Legacy. Seems strange this isn't possible. I'm sure there's a good reason. Anne - Original Message - From: "Susan Daily" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Monday, March 10, 2008 12:53 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] event sentence override Anne, I'm not sure, but when you export (or was it merge?) your family tree to another Legacy file, it tells you where you have sentence override in effect (and asks if you want to keep it). Maybe this is a way to find the individuals, although a more tedious route? Thanks I'll give this a try Jeremy, Anne - Original Message - From: "Jeremy Main" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Monday, February 25, 2008 1:46 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] photo search You might try "Print Picture List" in View \ Scrapbook. This is a list of all multimedia files (limited to selected individuals or marriages) and what event they are linked to. No tagging is made of the results, but you can use tagged individuals to create the picture list. This would let you sort of back into a list of (selected) individuals who have images attached to them. The "Picture Center" is, itself, a list of people who have (or don't have) attached pictures. You can browse individuals, but you can't tag them or their pictures. /Jeremy Main Anne Brooks wrote: Is it possible to do a search in Legacy to locate all individuals who have images attached to them in order to tag the list? [LegacyUG] IME
I have been using Legacy for a long time. Today I noticed if you right click on a field (empty or otherwise) ie. birth or death, the two options that come up are "select all" and "open IME". When I selected "open IME" nothing happened. The next time I right clicked the option "close IME" came up. What is IME? Re: [LegacyUG] Haphazard sourcing in reports
Thankyou for your suggestions on the list. It seems I have it solved but unfortunately I don't know why. The baptism source which would not appear was to one master source only, which was only being used by this one family. I checked that all the appropriate selections were made for reporting it. I did a test by adding a "test" source for baptisms, and it appeared on the reports. So, I can only conclude that something was wrong somewhere with that particular Master Source. I replaced the Master Source with a new one, and it seems to be fine. As part of the panic mode when I discovered this problem, I created other reports from other families, using other baptism sources and noted there was a problem with some of them not appearing on family reports / individual reports. After I did "routine maintenance" etc. I did not think it had solved it but since yesterday, I can no longer reproduce the problem, so am watching for it, and just can hope it doesn't reappear. Thanks again, Anne - Original Message - From: "ronald ferguson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Sunday, January 13, 2008 9:03 AM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Haphazard sourcing in reports Anne, As I have looked through the last couple of days of emails I have been pondering over this problem. Wendy has made some suggestions but I wonder if there is another possibility. Legacy's default is to use a Christening field rather than Baptism so have you by any chance created a Baptism Event to record them in this way, or did you use Customise>Data Format to change it. If the former is it possible that you have some recorded under "Christened"? It seems to be haphazard in that on other families there is no problem at all. Sometimes it is everyone in the report while in others, it only happens to some individuals. After noting this I went through the routine of backing up, routine maintenance, and then updated with the most recent copy of Legacy. I have been using Legacy since version 4, so am not new to the program. Would anyone have any ideas?" I haven't seen any replies to this (I don't think - there aren't any in the archives yet, at least). I wonder if this is a consistent problem? That is, the same sources are not appearing in reports, or does it change? If it's a consistent problem, perhaps those particular sources have the "Add this Detail to the Source Citation on Reports", or the "Include this Citation on Reports" check box unticked. You will need to open up an individual Source Detail (one which isn't appearing on your reports) to check those two boxes. There is also a check box in the Master Source List, that will turn off or on an entire Master Source. Check that one, too. If these don't solve your problem, please let us know so that others can make suggestions. :-) Hope this helps.
