Re: [LegacyUG] geo location database

2007-03-05 Thread Clarence Mundt
HI Nancy;
Go to Options Customize (Or CTL-Z)
Click on the OTHER tab.
Near the bottom left is the Geo Location Database.
Click on the Database Maintenance...

Now, we need some information here
There are 6 regional database:
AF - Africa Region (5.5 MB)
AM - Americas, excluding USA (4.7 MB)
AS - Asia Region (14 MB)
EU - Europe Region (9.5 MB)
PA - Pacific Region (2.1 MB)
US - United States Region (2.9 MB)

The US is the one you needed to have downloaded from:
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/GeoDownload.asp

If you have not done this, then one you maintenance screen:
Click Download

If you downloaded it to your Hard-Drive then:
Click Import

Now navigate to where you have downloaded the 'US' file.
Select it and click open..

Legacy will now add it to, or create, the Geo Location Database...

If You only wanted the 'US' and not the others, the go down the maintenance
screen and clock Delete first..

When it finishes importing, it will give you a screen of what you have in
the database.
Read and click OK
If you want to add others, repeat the Import routine...

When you are finished adding the regions you need,
then you can click Compress to make the access faster.

When all done, close the panel all done

I saved all 6 database's in a separate folder so I can refresh the database,
at will, with out downloading them again.
One of these day's there might be an updated database or a patch file to
update the database.
We have been waiting for several years for that to happen

Hope this gets you going again...

There does not seem to be a way to check what you have in your database with
out trying to re-import something you all ready have, and then it will
complain, but will also tell you what you have and don't have in your
database
It would be nice to get to that display directly, but I don't see any way to
just Check the Status of the database file..

Hi Dennis;
Now that everyone has voiced their opinion about how they like they
locations, it does not answer your question.
One of the control files used with the Geo Database is called:
GeoExtraCodes.txt..
First copy the file and name it GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt

Edit the GeoExtraCodes-Alt file and:
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AT THE TOP OF THE FILE!!!

What you want is the line that reads *USA|111| County
Just remove the * and file it...

This will now put the word County into you location when you use the Geo
Database.

There are many other options listed in these Geo control files

I hope this answers you question...

Hi, I'm new here; just bought the program and am now getting familiar
with it.

When selecting or merging a location from the Geo database, is it
possible to choose an option that adds the word County after the
county name? Or is my only option to manually type it in?

In my previous genealogy program I always added County after county
names since so many county names are the same as city names. In some
reports it really helps to clarify this potential point of confusion.

Thanks for the help.

Hello;
Just one more thought to add to my previous post about the Geo control
file...

They also control the ,USA being added to the location...
This would be in GeoCountryCodes-Alt.txt (after you copy it)
Locate USA|+USA
and then follow the instructions as to weather you want it or not, and if
so.. how you want it added

Plus, if I may add 2 cents here,

with what Allen was refering to,

the County Verifier within the program will tell
you if you have an invalid county, for instance,
if you have a birth say in Oley, Berks County, Pennsylvania
in 1751, it will tell you that Berks county was not formed until
1752 and then goes on to give the parent counties.

I too use the word 'county' in all my locations and I use the
short location also, it looks better on-screen and prints well
in book form.

   another 2 cents worth.

 Very true, Cathy!

 Cathy wrote:

Like many things, it depends on who your readers are likely to be.

If you have non USA readers, adding the word county is very useful.
Just as it is useful to spell out the state rather than use the

 you add the country.

You can't expect non-genealogists to know what your empty commas mean
either - perhaps US ones do but not others.

 Louisville, , Kentucky, USA

Or if you have a location like a cemetery or hospital...

Zachary Taylor Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, USA

St. Mary Hospital, Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, USA

You also have the abbreviated form that you can select on the reports...
 it
 will print as...

St. Mary Hosp., Louisville, Jefferson, KY, USA

I hope this clears it up.

This makes it easier for you to verify the actual places, find it on an
electronic map (like animap) or search databases like Ancestry and etc.

It will also allow you to merge things more accurately. I personally
 hate
finding information online that has the County in it. It causes me to
have more problems actually verifying the places...and merging it into
 my
 database.

Hi Randolph;

I think the 113/117 code is to add text the end of the fields..
This is like adding County!Co... to the end of the country field...
Or adding State to the end of the State field...
Or adding Country to the end of the Country field...

The one that really controls the Country field to add/remove , USA is
located in
GeoCountryCodes-Alt.

This is the one that deals with all the Country Codes line , USA

After you make your -Alt file

Edit GeoCountryCodes-Alt.txt file

Go down to this section:
USA|+USA
*remove the * from following line if you want to remove USA from your long
locations
*USA|+[blank]
*remove the * from following line if you want to remove USA from your short
locations
*USA|-[blank]

Remove the two * in front of the USA's and file it...

That should do it for you

You can look in the archives for many pro and cons about this.
I am just telling you how to do it...

And you will not find this information in the Help files...

Re: [LegacyUG] Saving a tagged Marriage List to .csv

2007-02-04 Thread Clarence Mundt
Hi Jennie;

I think that is a very good request.

In the Individual list there is an ability to do this under the 'Search'
menu at the bottom.
You have Show Tagged (Tag#) and Show Untagged (Tag#) among others
If you had these filters on the Marriage list, it would make things a bit
easier.
You could print a report of only those tagged or make a PDF.. but no CSV
..
As it is now, it is everyone in the list gets printed...
You do not have all the print options you have on the normal search,
but you do have the fields you needed.

You can go to the Legacy Home tab in Legacy and on the right side you will
find Suggest a new feature.

Glad you got your CSV list all sorted out...

Thank you for the hint and description.

Actually, I did that by reflex. I just double-clicked

screen with that couple. So I went back to the
Marriage List and double-clicked on Tag 2 and it
  worked.

This morning I looked at the results. Remember that I
wanted a list of all the couples where I had death

morning I realized that I needed to sort them into
couple order, so went back and added Spouse MRIN to
the list of fields I wanted printed or saved to csv.
I created the csv file. Then I sorted the file by
MRIN, Surname/Given name, and Sex (male first), which
put the couples together, sort of in the format in the
Marriage List report, which is what I wanted to get in
  the first place.

The only part I had to do by hand was to then put the
partners with more than one marriage together.

Now I can start researching to see if both partners of
the couple are buried together, and get the burial
  dates.

I will submit a request to be able to select Marriage
List couples for display or printing by Tag.

  Thanks for your help!

I was recently sent a GEDCOM from a cousin in a branch
of the family we have had no contact with for about a
  century.

The file has quite a few couples who died within a few
years of each other, or in the same (US) county, (or
both), and only one with burial information. I
suspect that most of these couples are buried
  together.

I looked at a printout of the Marriage List with these
fields, and tagged all of the couples of interest.
Then I wanted to save a printout of the tagged couples
to a .csv file, so I could research each couple and
capture any additional information. I also want to
compile lists by cemetery, so I can try and call for
any missing info (like dates of death or burial) they
  might have.

I don't see any option to print only the tagged

something obvious? Is there another way to do this?
Or is this material for another suggestion to Support?

OK Jennie..
You have to work a little harder to get these...

Search Detailed Searches
Look for whom: Marriage
Where to look: Marriage Tag 2
How to look: Equal To
What to look for: Tagged
Clear list before this search
Create List

Now you have all the individuals that had their marriage records set with Tag#2

Now click the print and do your report and or create a CSV/PDF file...

Re: [LegacyUG] Saving a tagged Marriage List to .csv

2007-02-03 Thread Clarence Mundt
Hi Jennie;

I have reread what you said about how you got your marriage records tagged.

Here is a Tip for you on tagging your marriage records...

While you are in the marriage list, it displays the marriage tags
(same set of tags you have set for the individuals).

You do not have to go to the individuals to set these marriage tags...
Just double click the tag you want to set the tag.
You will see the 'X' in the tag box..
This method of setting the tags also works in the individual list
and as well in the search list.
This is also in the help file at the bottom of Marriage List Help...

I hope this help you to tag marriage and individuals while in the list's
without going to the family view or having to edit the marriage or
individual records to set the tag.

Some of the list have the option for advance tagging,
but the marriage does not.
But you can just click on the tag you want to set.. or reset!

I hope this makes your Legacy a bit more useful.

Clarence.

  Clarence:

That's what I thought at first, but that search says
individual tag. When I was in the marriage list,
there was nothing under Options to set tags. I set
each tag (#2) manually. Back to the Individual
screen, each of those selected marriages shows the #2
tag set in the marriage bar.

Under Misc searches, there is no option to select
records with marriage tag # whatever. I searched
looking for individual tag #2, and it said no hits at
  all.

Or can I? I've attempted to edit, but the m/f/? boxes are greyed out.

Progeny's World Place Advisor has it as:
Dorenlee, Alberta, Canada 52°42'00 N112°57'00 W
I have no idea how to convert 14-43-21-w4.

I believe they both have the same database...

Hello everyone. We know about Latitudes and Longitudes in legacy. I, for
one, use them extensively.

If we have a person familiar with converting Canadian legal location to the
correct latitude and longitude, could you write me please?

Suppose I have Dorenlee, Alberta as a location. Its legal Canadian location
is given as:
14-43-21-w4.

That means it is in Section 14 of Township 43, Range 21 miles West of the
fourth Meridian. LOL, well, ok, I can use a Rand McNally Atlas (or highway
map) and find it.

Dorenlee is no longer a incorporated municipality, but it *does* exist, and
the latest population is reported as 2. It is a little bit South of New
Norway (on the shores of Red Deer Lake), East of Samson Lake Indian Reserve.
Last I heard there are a grain elevator and a cemetery there.

So my query is: How does a person change a Canadian legal location code to
its correct latitude or longitude? Is it even possible? If not possible, how
best to store this information? Just in notes of the person involved?

Thank you.

Robert

How do you copyright Public Records from NARA?
If you get the microfiche and put the images on your site, does that mean you
have a copyright to the image?
Or is it the delivery methods of this public information you are copy
protecting?
When the Government copyright runs out, after 70 years, they release it to the
public.
How does it get copyrighted again?

  Diane,

In general for the documents to be readable they would either take up too
much memory in a web page for them to download in a reasonable time and in
reports would have to be reproduced at full size for them to be readable.
Neither of these is realistically viable for the format you mention.

It should also be noted that these documents are normally copyrighted and
publication without permission would be a contravention of the regulations.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy tip: How to create a relationship report with more detail

2006-11-28 Thread Clarence Mundt
Hi;
I take a little exception to this report.

After you set up the relationships
1.. In the Family View, navigate to yourself, or the person to whom you want
to calculate all the relationships.
2.. Click on the Tools menu, then click Set Relationships.
Then you want to:

1.. Click on the Search eyeglass button in the main toolbar.
  2.. Click on Detailed Search
  3.. Look for Individual ... Where .. Relationship ... How .. Equal To ...
What .. Related
4.. Click on the Print button at the bottom.
5.. The Row 1 tab displays the fields that will print on the report. The
Optional Fields at the bottom are customizable. Just click on the Customize
button and select the Relationships field.
6.. Also select the Birth Date and Death Date fields.

I have 16,000 in my file but this only creates a report of some 4,452 people...
Now if I could just cut in down a bit more and drop the wife of 3rd or 4th
cousins of the list... lol

The use of the name list will do all 16,000 people..

Hope this helps a little bit more

standard Relationship Report only lists the name of the person and their
relationship to the starting person. To customize it, follow the steps as

Hi Richard;
I do that also to focus groups on the direct line I also use tag #9 for
such
But sometimes it would be nice to see all the first or second cousins in a
list
The search 'related' catches the wife of 5th cousin 8 times removed that
is a bit much!
But that might be just what you are looking for...

A good idea, which I have been using is:
I have tagged with #9 all direct line (my name and
choice) ancestors for my grandchildren, some inlaws
and remove ancestors born before 1500. About 25000
names in the main file, and 410 'direct lines' people.
They are the people most often searched for.
Create using the Focus list what ever core group you
wish to work with on a continuing basis, and give them
  one of the 9 Tags.

Gwen;
I was wandering what operating system you are
running..
This sounds link a W98SE type resource
problem...
I run a P3 with 512M and still ran into this
problem...
It would show some pictures, but not all... or
error 7 out
The problem is the way W98 does memory
mapping
I upgrade to W2K, which does it like XP (sort of..
based on NT) and now Legacy runs just fine...
I still miss my W98.

Re: [LegacyUG] problem with sourcing

2006-09-27 Thread Clarence Mundt

This is exactly why I put in for an option to show
all events that REQUIRE a source due to you putting data into some event. That
way you would see all your sources from the past and the new blank entry for the
event you just added data to. Why show all 500 events you "COULD" select from,
when you know exactly which one you want. If it was the only blank line, it
would be quick and easy to fill in the required information without scrolling
thru a big list
The above problem would not have occurred if it was
default!

If you are running the latest MADC and JET service

then you will most likely have to do the export

I hope this helps solve your problem.

Re: [LegacyUG]

2006-08-23 Thread Clarence Mundt

Hi Keith;
You are correct on the confusion.
The Help file states:

When Adding New Records

When records are deleted from a family file, it
leaves a "hole" in the sequential list of record numbers used by the individuals
and marriages. These most often occur as you merge duplicate records
together. You can have these abandoned numbers reused as you add new
records (or import them) by checking the Reuse abandoned RINs
option.

The reuse option is in Options Customize
Data Defaults

The above help file should be a bit clearer as
tothe MRINis or is notreused with the "Reuse RIN'
checked.

Support could clarify this.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Location List Questions

2006-08-07 Thread Clarence Mundt
Hi Larry;
I think you are talking about the , USA that is added
to the long and short location when you use the Geo Location Database.

There is a control file that does this in your C:/Legacy folder called
GeoCountryCodes.txt.
First you want to copy this file and name it GeoCountryCodes-Alt.txt
The original file could be updated from legacy at some point and
you would have to start over if you make your changes there.

Now edit the -Alt file and read some of the instructions how to modify the
file.
This is what you want:
* We have a special command of [blank] which allows users to a country name.
We had many
* users who all their work is in a single country. I'll give an example for
USA.
* If I wanted my location to read:
* Seattle, King, WA
* Notice how there is no , USA on the end. To accomplish this I would add
* a line like:
* USA|+[blank]
* to remove USA from long locations and
* USA|-[blank]
* to remove USA from short location.
* Of course you wouldn't have the * at the beginning of the line.

Now scroll down to the USA|+USA and remove the * in front of the two lines
that have the [blank] in them.
Save it and you are done..

This will do the trick...

Re: [LegacyUG] Census Reports

2006-06-28 Thread Clarence Mundt

Hi Gene;
I would assume you have sourced all those who have
a 1930 census event.

Go to you master source list and hilight all the
1930 Census Sources and click Show List.
Now you have the one you have already
done...
Pick an unused/clear tag and tag them.

Next, go to the search window and
detailedsearch.
Select Inividual Tag number Equal to
Untagged
This will give you those without a tag that you set
in the first place.
You might also add Second Condition
"AND"
Select Individual Death Date After
01 Jan 1930
This will narrow it down to the living in
1930.
You may also want to check Burial Date also just in
case...

Click Clear list first, and then create
list.

This should give you the list you are looking
for...

Now from this list, you can Tag them, and/or print
them as you wish.

Good luck,
Clarence
