Re: [LegacyUG] Group picture

2007-10-10 Thread Elaine O'Neill
I have a photocopy of a family portrait. Not positive what year it was
taken, but have estimated it by the youngest family memberknowing
his birthdate and estimating his age in the photo. I have no idea if
the portrait was done for a particular occasion. There is a vase of
flowers on a table in the background. All the males, except for the
youngest who was abt. 3 yrs old, are in suits, and the females are
dressed in "Sunday Best" dresses. There are two older males, one I
believe to be a brother of the wife of the family group, and another
whom I believe to be a brother of the husband. My question is where
is the most practical place to add this photo? Or should I add it
individually to each family member? If I made a separate event for it,
"Family Portrait 1914", does it get attached to one family member or
to the marriage, or what? I'm stumped.

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Bible Sourcing

2007-10-08 Thread Elaine O'Neill
I have a similar issue. I have xerox copies of pages from a family
bible. All I know for sure is it belonged to a member of the family. I
can't tell if the entries were all made at one time or not, although
it seems as though the earliest ones were and then others were made as
they happened. The bible either belonged to my 3Gr-grandparents or one
of their daughters, but it's impossible to tell. Right now I just have
it sourced as Hardy Family Bible Pages, with no detail. I know I
should be more detailed but I'm not sure just what to put. I have no
idea where the original bible is, or who had it when the pages were
copied. They've been copied many times as my copy is quite faint and
fuzzy. Any suggestions?

Re: [LegacyUG] Suggestions wanted please: How to enter "boarder"

2007-10-06 Thread Elaine O'Neill
This is a very interesting topic and I'm glad Robert brought it up. I
have a couple of incidences where the family I'm researching seemed to
be operating a boarding house. Most names of the boarders are
unfamiliar to me, but there are a couple with same last name as this
family, and of the wife's maiden name. Now, if I were to create an
event, or enter the boarders as unlinked individuals, would I only
include the ones with names I know to be family names, or all of them,
or none of them? They were Russian immigrants in the Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania area and all the boarders were also Russian immigrants.
This was on the 1910 census. I can't find them in 1920, and 1930 they
are in Youngstown, Ohio with only immediate family.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Re: [LegacyUG] Please take it off list -- IT'S A LEGITMATE QUERY, FOLKS!

2007-10-06 Thread Elaine O'Neill
I wholeheartedly agree with both Janis and Stacey. I think if the
members of the list could be relied on to discuss "hot button" topics
calmly and without prejudice the list moderators would have no need to
feel that some subjects should be banned.

Personally, I welcome a reasonable discussion of this topic. My eldest
son is gay. And although he has, for want of a better word, boyfriend,
I'm not yet at the point that I want to enter the boyfriend in the
program. Not because I'm against the relationship, I'm not, but
because, to the best of my knowledge it is not yet a "committed"
relationship. If and when it becomes one, then I do need to know how
to handle it within Legacy.

So thank you to everyone who is able to discuss this without getting upset.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to enter details of adopted children

2007-09-14 Thread Elaine O'Neill
Sara is absolutely right on this point! I am adopted and as far as
I'm concerned my legal, adopted name is my "real" name, and my name at
birth is my AKA. However, I am not only tracing my adopted family
lines, but my biological maternal lines. My biological paternal lines
are unknown. What I have done is maintain two databases. One for the
adopted family, and one for the bio. In the adopted one, I list my
birth mother, but not as the preferred parent, and in the bio database
I do the reverse. It may not be the "correct" way, but it works for
me.

[LegacyUG] Repository Question

2007-08-22 Thread Elaine O'Neill
I've been using Legacy for almost a year now, and am trying to get a

question about what to use for the repositories. What is the accepted
way to enter the repository when you have the original document in
your posession, and it's also available at a county clerk's office,

birth certificate, adoption papers..those types of records.

That may or may not be true. But this is not your run-of-the-mill
list. These posts, whether we agree with them or not, are off topic.
And allowing them to be posted, which no one did, only brings on hard
feelings and discussions that eventually turn nasty. We each have our
own religious and political beliefs. And that's the best way to keep
them, to ourselves.
I own a few Yahoo groups and I do not allow any political or religious
discussions, simply to avoid hard feelings. Not to mention that
graphics and HTML are specifically prohibited on the Legacy list. Or
haven't you read the rules???

Hi Ron,
I checked the MRINS, the number for the first marriage is one digit higher
than for the second marriage.
I ran a file check/repair. I get an error stating a To Do item is not
found. I don't have any To Do Items set. When I click on the OK, I then
get an Error:3021 Item Missing message.
I click on NO so that the repair will finish.
I did another preview of the Descendant book and it's still the same.

Hi Susan,
Actually it's a second husband, and I can't even find how to make him
private. He's actually designated as the preferred spouse, as she had
no children with the first husband. I'm only doing the report as far
as her generation, so her son is not included. The report ends with
this generation. My starting point is my husband's 2nd Great
Grandfather and I'm only including 4 generations.
Thanks for the suggestion.

[LegacyUG] Gender Reassignment

2006-12-17 Thread Elaine O'Neill

Is there a way to edit the gender of an entry? I was given
information on a distant cousin and that cousin's spouse and was not
told whether this cousin was male or female. Normally it's not hard
to know, but the cousin's given name is Lee and the spouse's given
name is Nathal. I assumed, and incorrectly so, that Lee was female
and Nathal was male. In fact, it's the opposite. I only found out
from an obituary I just found online. How can I switch them around?
Or can I? I've attempted to edit, but the m/f/? boxes are greyed out.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who can't find a Settings

folder, just to be on the safe side. I backed them up to CD, and I
also back them up off site daily. Until this past weekend, I didn't
have a working CD burner and had to find somewhere to back up my
files. Now I'm doubly backed up and not nearly so nervous anymore.
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, your help is much

June, assuming that you used the Legacy default installation, it is in
C:\Legacy and comes after the Legacy Home and Pictures folders. The usr
files which you see are those generated by Legacy (personally I don't bother
to back them up as Legacy will recreate them when reinstalled) and the
folder is at the top before you get to them

[LegacyUG] Which files do I back up?

2006-11-27 Thread Elaine O'Neill

I have been through the archives and did not find the answer to my
specific question. I don't know if I'm just not using the right
criteria or if I'm simply missing something. This is a very basic
question and I'm sure the answer is somewhere, I just haven't found
it.

Anyway, I finally got a new CD burner (my other one wouldn't recognize
any disks) and I want to back my family files up on a regular basis.
My question is WHICH files do I back up to maintain current backups of
my family files? Do I just back up the zip files? Do I back up
everything in my C:/Legacy/Data folder? Or do I back up both? I'm
relatively new to Legacy after using FamilyTreeMaker for years. FTM
didn't make zip files, and it was easy to tell the correct files to
back up. I'm just a bit confused and don't want to miss anything.

Thanks in advance for your help.

When you click on File, Export to, Gedcom file you will see that at the
bottom of that window is a button saying Record Selection and the window

In the Family View, just below the person who married twice, select the
left-most icon which looks like a man and woman and if you hover the
pointer over it it says "Spouses ..." with the names. Click on the icon
and then select Sort in the window. Or you can use the up and down

2006-11-18 Thread Elaine O'Neill

I am using the free version of Legacy, the latest build, WindowsXP
home SP2. I have two issues I need to resolve.

1. Is there a way to select certain people from your database and
export them to a GEDCOM? In FamilyTreeMaker there is an export choice
between entire file and selected individuals, I don't see that option
with Legacy. I recently made contact with a cousin, who also uses
Legacy, and wanted to send her what I had on the family lines we share
but couldn't find a way without sending my entire database.

2. I have one ancestor who married twice and when I go to print a
Descendant book or report Legacy insists on putting his second
marriage first. What can I do to reverse this? I have dates for both
marriages entered and can't figure out what I did wrong to cause this.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Question

2006-10-17 Thread Elaine O'Neill

Thanks Jim, and to everyone who responded to my question.

I've been doing mine similar to what you suggest, Jim. I think I'll
take your suggestions and add the date I accessed the information.
I'm not doing this to publish my research professionally, just for my
own satisfaction and for anyone in the family who might be interested,
but I do want to know where I found my information in case I have to
go back later or so that I don't repeat research unnecessarily.

Thanks so much again to all who responded.

Elaine

Elaine,

To be specific, here is how I source Ancestry's WWI draft card database:

Ancestry.com. World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 [database and

United States, Selective Service System. World War I Selective Service
System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918. Washington, D.C.: National
Archives and Records Administration), Roll: 1439783; State of Indiana, Draft
Board: 0, Arthur Benjamin Meyer. Accessed Aug. 13, 2006.
The Source Detail is the last part with "Roll: 1439783; State of Indiana,
Draft Board: 0, Arthur Benjamin Meyer. Accessed Aug. 13, 2006."

When you get a hit at Ancestry, look below the data for the Source of
Information. It might not be exactly as Elizabeth Shown Mills would do it,
but all the essentials are there.

Thanks,

[LegacyUG] Source Question

2006-10-16 Thread Elaine O'Neill

I have a question on Sources, but it doesn't pertain ONLY to Legacy,
but Sources in general. If I'm asking in the wrong place, I
apologize.

I want to be as thorough as possible with my sources, just for my own
information in case I have to go back later to check any data. I'm
from the old pen and paper school and always noted where I found my
information, or once I got a computer, printed out pertinent pages and
kept track of websites. I've had a subscription to Ancestry for the
past couple of months and have hit the jackpot on a few things. Today
I found my Grandfather's WWI draft registration, and joy of joys, it
lists his city of birth in Germany. Now, under the transcribed
information they give "Source Citation: Registration Location: Wayne
County, Michigan; Roll: 2032673; Draft Board: 23."
But farther down the page it states :"Source Information:
Ancestry.com. World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
[database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: MyFamily.com, Inc., 2005. Original
data: United States, Selective Service System. World War I Selective
Service System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918. Washington, D.C.:
National Archives and Records Administration. M1509, 4,582 rolls." It
seems to me that just their "Source Citation" isn't enough. Or is it?
What do other Legacy users use? I'm currently using the free
version, but plan to upgrade at the earliest possibility.

Thanks to anyone who can give me any advice.

Elaine O.
