Re: [LegacyUG] Saving a Gedcom

Marie,

FTM gives you two options:
FTM for Dos - uses Gedcom (*GED)
Gedcom (*GED)

Use the last option. The first is FTM specific.

This seems to be a strange problem. Let me preface this by saying that
up until about two years ago I used FTM then switched to Legacy. I'm running
the updated Legacy 7 Deluxe. I've made a gedcom using a focus group, named it
and saved it to my desktop as a gedcom. Problem is: it ends up a FTWgedcom
which is a Family Tree Maker gedcom. When I open it my old FTM opening screen
comes up and asks for a new file name.

I want to check this gedcom then upload it to ancestry.com and/or send
it to a couple of people in my family but now I don't know what I can do.

I used FTM up until about two years ago when I switched over to Legacy.
Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering English Locations

2008-09-13 Thread Erin Bradshaw

Martin,

Yes, you have me even more confused. I asked someone last week how to list
an Ireland location. Not wanting to risk offending anyone on the list, I
didn't want to post my question, but now I must. In an effort to be
accurate, I wanted to know if I would list an unknown location in Ireland as
, , Ireland, UK. Okay, don't get upset! I admit I am ignorant of the
proper usage. Someone listed only northern Ireland as part of the UK. How
is one to know? And if I don't really know what part of Ireland should I
just leave it as , , Ireland until I know more?

Thank you, from a newby to Legacy and much impressed by the efforts the
program makes toward proper location and source info. I came from FTM so
that should explain a lot. I am trying to convert everything and make every
possible effort to do things right.

But it is best to avoid modern "county" names like Cleveland except in a
very recent address perhaps.

It also gets complicated with counties in the past sometimes named after
the

county town as in the county of Lancaster (or County Palatine of Lancaster
to confuse our Transpondian friends even more!).

Yes we do have counties, we had them before America. Their
names usually end in "shire" eg Lancashire, but there are
exceptions eg. Cleveland, County Durham, Northumberland, Kent
etc. In general, Ireland counties take the form County, Name.

My apologies for being sharp, but Britain did not have a system created in
the 17th and 18th centuries for its naming conventions and the name can be
important in understanding the history.
The county of Kent was invaded by the Jutes in roughly 600 to 700 AD and they
got no further than Kent. How do we know; first, there are excavations along
the border between Surrey and Sussex on one side and Kent on the other which
show battle graves dating from the period, but also the place names change.
Harbours in Kent are called Ramsgate and Margate for instance, harbours in
Sussex are called Havens - Newhaven for instance. Towns in some areas finish in
-ton whereas in other areas they can be -burghs or -burys. Places such as
Manchester, Lancaster, Chester derive their names from the latin castra for a
fort. The many places called Eccles refer to Roman sites of churches
(ecclesiastes)
Until Chaucer in about 1400, the English language was so diverse that no one
could write something which could be understood be more than a small proportion
of the population. A hill could be a brae, a tor, a hill, a cop or any of
another dozen names. Rivers are the same.
Their names today are a distant echo of their history and work is being done
to relate the names to the people. DNA testing of long term families is also
being used to work alongside this.
I feel it is important to preserve these links and to investigate them.
Naming conventions can help to preserve that history so that, when the experts
find more about places, you will be able to benefit by preserving the name in
your addresses and then extending the history.
I will now get off my hobby-horse
  John

For some reason Legacy does not have the cemetery in Kenosha, WI. When I
put in the name and where they are buried it keeps telling me that there
is

no such cemetery. The name of the cemetery is Green Ridge and it is in
downtown Kenosha, WI. It should be fixed in your program.

And I've only just got up so my brain is not yet in gear, but I think the
answer to your question is "yes", at least to some extent.

I think the default sentence for the description field is "at [Desc]".
Take

the Residence Event as an example, it reads "[He/She] at [Desc]". Without
changing the default, only the contents of the Description field, it can
be

made to read eg. "He resided at 'birth' ", "He resided at 'birth in London
Hospital' ", He resided at 'census' ", where the bit in single quotes is
what is included in the description field. These are not particularly good
examples but, I think, make the point.

If this is not what you meant please come back to us.

I've had a long day and perhaps I am misunderstanding you, but you CAN
design the sentence to read differently if the description field is filled
than when it isn't.

Ron,

After further review, you are correct! The events showing
without the colon
are those where there is no description entered. I don't want
to define
those events without the description as sometimes there is valid
informationto enter. For example, I have cases where Residence
is defined with a
description of "at the time of her father's death", if I have
found such
information in an obituary that was published in the newspaper.

It sure would be nice if the list style would print them the
same regardless
of whether all of the fields are entered or not.

I will submit this as a bug.

Thank you!

Thanks, Mary :-(

That is one I had not spotted! But before going further may I
make it clear
that most of the problems I have with Pedigree webpages are self
inflictedas the presentation of my site is definitely non-standard.

Yes, I use the list style and having looked I have found an
example of the
comma instead of a colon. However, it is not as you have
suggested due to a
self created Event. The one I have found is a Residence Event.
Within that
list I have 3 Residence Events but only one has the comma and in
that one I
have a blank field:

Residence: Census, 1901, Salford
Residence, 1891, Salford

So my question to yourself is - "is the second field in your
Event blank?"

Now mine is due to an error but your's looks as though it is
not, in which
case what happens if you remove the second field from the Event,
or fill it?
(assuming, of course that is the reason).

BTW please do not expect a quick answer as it 2-45am here and
the only
reason I'm still up is that I'm working on a complete redesign
of my site
and I won't sleep until most the scheme worked out, mainly in my
head but
with some of it on paper.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help - new user

2008-09-25 Thread Erin Bradshaw

Linda,

Well, if you set up separate family files, I hope your memory is better than
mine. I caught myself a couple of times not remembering which file I put
new info into. Since surnames will have at least one repeat across each
file I had trouble remembering or sometimes would just open the wrong file
and input the new info. Well, once it was done I didn't want to redo it.
Now I am faced with merging files.

I am sure that it is a personal preference but memory and organization will
play a big part in your decision.

Have fun,

As a new user of Legacy coming from a long time use of FTM, let me just say you
are going to love it. I would suggest that you make a gedcom of your FTM files
and import to a Temp Legacy file. Legacy makes it so much easier to clean
up FTM files. Make generous use of Master Location lists, Tree list, and when
you have cleaned up your file to your satisfaction the move the temp file to a
master Legacy file.

What part of Minnesota? I working on getting my cousin (near Barnum) to use

After 15 years using FTM, I find that I just don't care much for the
new FTM 2008 or FTM 2009 and have been looking for a genealogy program that I
can live with. I tried TMG for about a year, but the non-ituitive interface is
cumbersome and the screen appeal is pretty dismal. I have only dabbled a
little bit into Legacy, but am impressed with the method of source entry and
like the look of Legacy on my monitor.

Question: I note that there is a package deal that includes Legacy 7
along with the User Manual and Training Video Vol 1. There is also a pdf
available called "Legacy Family". I am wondering if the pdf is basically the
same material as what is in the training video or if the pdf is more in-depth.
I wrote to Legacy sales asking the same question, but have not heard back.

I have several thousand names in my family file and plan to enter each
person manually rather than having the whole file imported. The reason is
because I want to clean up my family files. I have inconsistencies with some
fact fields and many inconsistencies with sources. I really want to clean up
my entire file and so will be biting the bullet. This is why I have been so
very cautious about which program to use. I sure hope Legacy does well for me.

I surely wish that there were a User Group somewhere in my vicinity but
none are listed in my state of Minnesota.

Thank You!

Just a small question. You said "Ditto for media files". Does that mean
that on your Desktop and Laptop your media files are in the same location?
I have all my media on an external drive for my desktop, that wouldn't be
the case for my laptop. Or if I got an external drive for my laptop, it
wouldn't be drive "L:" as it is on my desktop. Or do you up load all your

Kathy, and others who were involved in the DropBox discussion, as it
pertains to the Legacy data file.

Brilliant! I love knowing that each time I close my Legacy file on my
laptop, it updates my file on my desktop - and the reverse. No copying to a
thumb drive. No backing up (no pesky error 91). Not even the trouble of
moving a file, via the home network, from one machine to the other. Just
seamless, effortless synchronization.

Hi Erin

I know you addressed your question to Janis, but I thought I'd jump in
anyway, with a possible answer for you...

Dropbox, the free part of it, only allows you to have 2GB of space so you
will want to keep that in mind when you decide on what files to put in
your Dropbox. To sync my genealogy files, I needed more space than that,
so I bit the bullet and paid for the extra space. Anyway, I now keep my
entire Surnames folder in my Dropbox. That way, I can

Re: [LegacyUG] DropBox, after using for a few days

2009-02-13 Thread Erin Bradshaw
I am using Legacy v. 7.0.0.81 and DropBox on Windows XP (on desktop and
laptop). I have never encountered error 91. I have delayed updating to .86
because I thought I noticed that err. 91 started then (I may be wrong). But
since I was not having that problem decided to stay with tried and true.
Also I have no media in my Legacy program yet.

Well mercy sakes Dropbox just hasn't worked 100% for me.
The Dropbox program is installed on each computer (1 XP & 1 VISTA
64bit), both using the same build of Legacy7 Dlx.

From the XP 'puter, I copied my .fdb file to Dropbox. It was

immediately copied to Dropbox server and appeared on my VISTA machine.
Now, each time I open Legacy I get the dreaded Error 91 - "Error
opening data base"
"Run-time error '91':
Object variable or With block variable not set"
It then closes the Legacy program.
This happens approximately ever other time I open Legacy. Then it
will open almost normally. This behavior happens no whether I open
Legacy by double clicking the file in the DropBox folder or if I try
to start Legacy from the start program.
This happens on both the XP and the VISTA machine and it doesn't make
any difference whether the Legacy file was closed and then immediately
opened on the same machine or the other machine.
One other "strange" thing ~ if I set the Options > Customize >
Starting File > to Always Prompt for Starting Family File and then
save that setting... the next time I start Legacy, the .fdb file
in the LockBox folder is the one used and the setting under Options >
Customize will have been reset to Open Last Used Family File
Automatically.
Never had the dreaded Run-Time error 91 or any other problem before
using LockBox and will probably need to return to toting my flash
driver forth and back between the two machines.
Thought I'd post this problem in the hope that it might shed
additional light on what is going on with the Run-Time error 91 issue.

Brilliant! I love knowing that each time I close my Legacy file on my
laptop, it updates my file on my desktop – and the reverse. No copying to
a

thumb drive. No backing up (no pesky error 91). Not even the trouble of
moving a file, via the home network, from one machine to the other. Just
seamless, effortless synchronization.

Ditto for media files.

[LegacyUG] cleaning up gedcom import

2009-02-13 Thread Erin Bradshaw
In tree finder there are several single person trees, when we went in and
linked those people with the correct family and then did a check/repair I
expected to see those trees gone. They were still showing as 1 item trees.
How come?

Also the person I am helping imported a gedcom from Family Origins and most
of her year dates imported with (we guess) a small L915. So her dates are
messed up. I was looking for a way to use search/replace >date field. Where
l (small L) would be replaced by 1 To fix every date at once. But as I have
not used this feature before I was nervous about messing up her file.
Possible? Suggestions?

Re: [LegacyUG] cleaning up gedcom import

2009-02-13 Thread Erin Bradshaw

Thanks, Ron,

I had forgotten the refresh step.

As for the dates, she tells me she thinks she has just about manually
changed them all. So I will let that go. But thanks. It kind of scared me
that if I couldn't specify the date field that it would change more than
intended, and that I couldn't see a place to change all date fields at once
and would have to be done for ea. type of date anyway, so would still be a
slow process. But bless her heart, she is plugging away and cleaning them
up.

Thanks for the help. Ron, you are appreciated.

Erin,

Did you click "Refresh" from the option on the right of the Tree Finder
Screen? This is necessary after any changes.

There is no problem using Search and Replace to make the date changes you
need. You may have to select the "anywhere in the field" option and make
sure to chamge the full date ie. l990 to 1990, otherwise all the "l"s will
be changed! If the dates are in different fields such as Event Date, Birth
Date etc. then you will have to do it for each one. There is also an option
to choose whether or not to change each selection before so doing; you may
prefer to start by having this set and then switch to "Select All" when your
confidence has built up.

Thank you also, Dennis.

Forgot the Refresh.

I am more brave with my own files and trying things but with some else's I
hesitate. She has asked me to help her and since I am still new to Legacy,
apprehensive. She said she needs computer training and I am trying to help
her become more confident on the computer. After watching her I don't think
she needs as much help as she thinks, just some confidence.

Thanks again.

You should familiarize yourself with backup/restore before doing
anything. Another option is to make a copy of the file (Save Family File
As...) and try it on the copy to see how it works.

Never be afraid to try things (if you have a backup).

Re: [LegacyUG] Putting Ancestry images into Legacy

2009-02-14 Thread Erin Bradshaw

Meg,

This is what I do. I choose a higher quality print from my printer
depending on the scanned image. If it is clear and easily read I choose
"Text and Image", if the original microfilm was a poorer quality therefore a
poorer scan the I choose "Photo" plain paper. I then scan it into my
computer or I just choose save and then choose "to my computer". I can then
crop the excess black.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Putting Ancestry images into Legacy

In trying to get a lot of different types of images added to one person as
a test run...I have seen that Ancestry's viewable images for a census are
of a nicely high resolution. However, when printed out, or saved [as
you'd do to get it into Legacy], the quality is lessened and the image if
saved. added to a person's page and then viewed from the thumbnail is
horrid, nowhere near the original.
We finally did a Print Screen of the original census view and it was
finally very goodproviding the image was close up and did not have to
be full page. If your quarry was on the first 10 lines or so, the image
in the Print Screen was very clear and could be zoomed in nicely for
further exam. However, if your quarry was farther down the page, you had
to zoom out for a full page shot, the Print Screen image was just as bad
as Ancestry's first downloaded ones.

We think this is because Ancestry wishes to SELL you the higher quality
image rather than let you have it for free as a download. There is a
handy button near 'print' allowing you to order the better image from
Ancestry. So my goal to add the original census image for a lot of names
may not work as well as I had planned.Anyone have another idea for
obtaining a nice quality image off of Ancestry ? No copyright issues to
be skirted, just wanting to put them into Legacy with the linked name. Meg

Re: [LegacyUG] Convert FTW to GEDCOM

Branko and Chris,

It is important to know which version the FTW file was created in. If it is
an earlier or same as mine I could do it for you. By the way, try to talk
your "older" friend into Legacy as I have done with several of mine. I love
it, they love it and at least one is 80+.

Hi,

I received a FTW file from a friend and would like to convert it to GEDCOM
so that I can import the data into Legacy.

I have used GenViewer and that's great but naturally can't export to GEDCOM.

Can somebody help to convert the file?

Many Thanks

Lew,

Thank you but no. I am talking about the icon that is supposed to be at the
lower left of the Legacy Family view page (the little blue book). It is on
my Legacy family view on my desktop but for some reason it is not there in

If you are talking about the Task Bar at the bottom of the screen,
just drag the icon from the desktop to the Task Bar. If you want it
in both places, create a shortcut.
