I am on dial up and can't possible sit and wait on 3,000 pages to upload
other than through an FTP program. Sometime back I downloaded "SmartFTP" and
used it to upload my Legacy webpages.

Have used the Legacy feature to create 'pedigree' web pages.

Have created a web site with 'freepages' at rootsweb...

Is there an easier way to upload the hundreds of pages at one time ? ?

I did manage to upload the 'family group' created pages, but also had to
select each page rather than do it in only monster upload.

Any suggestions ? ?

Jim,
I had a DELL Axim with Pocket Genealogist. I now have a Palm TX with
Gedstar Pro. I think the Palm beats the heck out of the Axim, hands down.
However, I don't like the Gedstar Pro compared to Pocket Genealogist. I
would still use my Axim just for that reason if it hadn't wore out. lol

Does anyone know if Pocket Genealogist 3.0 works with a Palm Operating
System, or is this product only for Pocket PC system?  If so, is the Gedstar
Pro simply a lower priced product?  I've made handheld software purchases
before, only to be disappointed later.

I have a Palm Lifedrive and the Pocket Genealogist 3.0 looks great.

RE: Legacy: Family History or Genealogy? - was Re: [LegacyUG] Homosexual Entries

2007-09-07 Thread Paul A.
Darlene,

You are too narrow minded. I may not believe in that type of relationship,
but I am also educated enough to know that those relationships are as old as
marriage itself. Just because we don't come across written "confessions"
doesn't mean they didn't exist in our genealogies.

I think Legacy should be a genealogy program. I think it has gone the
family history route far enough. There are plenty of notes options for
those wishing to include family history which is what I do. I think it is
already well enouh balanced.

Just because Legacy could decide to include same sex unions as an option is
an absolutely ridiculous reason for leaving it and moving down to inferior
software. Just because they could choose to include it, doesn't mean that I
have to use it.

I think Legacy is just fine the way it is. The only other thing is that I
am really looking forward to version 7 to continue my genealogy. It is the
best genealogy software on the market and has a great team of support as
well as a great group of users that are always glad to help the rest of us.

I use Legacy because I want to trace my blood line
back as far as I can. I could care less about family
history or some odd relationship between two people of
the same sex. So far, I have not found one homosexual
relationship in my family going back to 1800. Maybe
this is because my family is made up of Christians,
and we honor our Lord. If I did ever find someone,
who is homosexual, in my family, their partner or
friend would not be included in with my genealogy.
They cannot create children and therefore are
irrelevant. I think all the homosexuals should get
together and create their own program. If Legacy
turns out to favor special interest groups, such as
gays, I will go elsewhere to continue with my
genealogy. I don't want anyone answering my e-mail
because this is MY opinion and there doesn't need to
be any discussion.

RE: [LegacyUG] Keeping two databases and their media files in sync

2007-08-25 Thread Paul A.
I will start by saying that I have never used it, but isn't this what the
Intelli-Share is for?
You could always copy your media files to another folder outside Legacy,
split it into several folders and then only share the changes. Otherwise,
and ftp would be the simplest, I think. I would be interested to know,
because I have a relative that I work closely with on our family.

Here's a question. My sister and I are both running Legacy 6.0. We
want to keep our databases in sync, and can exchange backup files, then
merge them to accomplish that.

Is there an easy way to do the same with media files? Mine is about
40MB right now, and so can't be sent as an e-mail attachment. Is there
a good way to transfer them via FTP? What about differences between the
two media files. Is there a good way to merge such files?

I notice that Legacy only backs up the primary Pictures folder, and no
sub-folders. I like to keep documents in a sub-folder, group photos in
another sub-folder, and photos of places and things in yet another
sub-folder, while all photos of individuals are in the Pictures folder.
I know that I can create my own media backup using WinZip, and include
those three sub-folders, but it would be very handy if Legacy could do
that on its own.

I would be very interested to hear any suggestions/experiences along
these lines.

Thanks,

John

Denise,

If your scanner won't scan several pages of a letter into one pdf file, you
can always scan it in as individual pdfs. Then use a free pdf editor such
as 995 (software995.c0km) and "combine several pdf's into one pdf file.

Art, What is PDFFIll PDF Editor? I haven't heard of it.

After thinking about formats a bit more. I agree that TIF would probably be
best for archiving photos, but for multiple page letters that will only be
viewed, not edited, wouldn't PDF be more compact and useful? I believe my
new little scanner will scan directly to a PDF file, I will have to see if
it can combine multiple scans into one file. Otherwise I could have six or
eight files for one letter. I suppose I could just scan and inventory page
1 to get the basic inventory and then go back and add the rest of the pages.
Too bad I have a job..

One point is that one of my own brother's is 61 this year. He found out
about two years ago that he had a daughter he never knew about and through
her he had a granddaughter and a grandson. The grandson turned 15 last
week. Just goes to show that we never know for sure. DNA proved it and
also proved it on another brother when a woman wanted to sell him his
"grandson" for 300K. We thought we would lose my brother to massive
coronary. LOL But, DNA proved it true but, he filed for custody and now
raises the grandson when we thought it was the "end of branch".

But I would gladly acknowledge and pay for DNA to prove a male

mother's or father's line. There are other males but all born to

2007-08-21 Thread Paul A.
Mike,

How dare you even consider jumping on and complaining about so many people
not sticking to the topic in the subject when you posted the following under
the subject of family name history.

"I don't and never will use a web-based mailing product. To me, email in
a mailing list like this one is a text environment. HTML should play no
part at all, and should really only be used, if ever, between friends
and family in private stuff.

Since I don't use gmail, I can't really comment on what you're saying
about everything being treated as just a sequence of messages in date
received sequence. Since gmail lets you organise your mail by folder,
I'm sure there must be a facility to sort the mail in a folder according
to subject matter. If gmail is the same thing as Google Mail, then it's
called a Conversation."

Your ranting is uncalled for and I, for one, am getting tired of it. I come
here to learn not read about your problems with what everyone else does
wrong. This is a great list but people like you and your attitude make some
of us reconsider using it.

As for the HTML...It is here to stay. There are many people on this
list that are blatantly ignoring the rules and should be reprimanded if the
rules remain that all messages should be in plain text. I will abide by it
although, this is the only place I use plain text but do so to abide.
Others however, don't. And it is obvious by the large numbers of HTML
messages, that it isn't going anywhere.

So, please quit complaining and let the rest of us continue to try to learn
in a more pleasant environment!

Publication Facts: You may use standard genealogical approximations. From a
marriage date, you can estimate birth dates. You can estimate that a man was
married at age twenty-five and a woman at age twenty-one. You can also
estimate that a first child was born one year after the parents' marriage
and that subsequent children were born every two years after that. [A

RE: [LegacyUG] Favorite Legacy Tip

2007-08-20 Thread Paul A.
Heather,

I am interested where you get the years that women marry at about 21 and men
at about 25. Are you basing the past on today's estimates? Men and women
used to get married at much earlier ages than they do now. It was nothing
for men and women to marry at 14 and 16. It was probably more common than
not.

If you look into many lines of nobility, men were many times married as
early or earlier than commoners. At a time when over 50% of the population
of the United States lived on farms, a woman was an old maid by the time she
was 21 and if she wasn't married by then, she was less likely to be able to
marry.

So, I don't use those ages in estimating dates, because they would be
absolutely unrealistic in most of my data file.

I'm not bashing by any means. I was just curious how you arrived at those
ages of 21 and 25. I am curious.

no, to me they are all different.

cal - means I was given an age and a time so he was 34 in 1834, so his
birth is: cal 1800

abt - means that someone gave me an about time, like in an interview so
I ask someone when their parent was born and they say oh, it was about 1910,
then I put abt 1910. I also use abt when I'm given a database with abt
used in it.(ok, I don't differentiate between ca and abt)

est - means that I guessed the date based on the dates of other events, or
dates of the events of relatives. (The whole, children are born about 2
years apart, women are about 21 when they marry, men are about 25.) So
basically, I don't have any basis for the date except my guess based on the
norms of society (which vary...)

each of these are entirely different to me. I admit that many people
wouldn't understand the nuances, but to me, they are huge.

I was surprised when I read that people didn't know about typing the
surname, given name in the index to go quickly to that name.  It gave me the
idea to send everyone in the group my favorite legacy tip.

In the family view
If you have the husband or wife highlighted and then click in the middle
between them on the background it will rotate through the highlighted
person's siblings. If you click on the background to left of the husband or
right of the wife, depending on  who is highlighted it will rotate through
their other spouses.  If you click on the background next to the highlighted
person's parents it will rotate through any additional parents they might
have.

I can't think of any more right now but I know I do a lot of right clicking
on the screens to see what they will do. If you have a favorite tip why
don't you share it with the rest of the group.

RE: [LegacyUG] OT but pertinent IMHO

2007-08-18 Thread Paul A.
Renee,

I have respectfully disagree. I think the Legacy list is much better than
the gen-newbie. In the past people would get just as ugly on there as on
here! I remember one person that was mean and nasty to most people on
there and if you defended yourself, the admin would instantly unsubscribe
you. I know because me and several others were victims.

On this list, I think the admin is wise in not getting involved any more
than they have to. Many times the people "police" themselves and chastise
one another. But you must understand why. Just like any list, there are
people that have been on here for ages and know each other almost like
family and treat each other as badly as many families treat one another.

But, the people on here jump in to be just as helpful and there are just as
many that are kind and coureous as there are mean and nasty, if not more.
Legacy is a good list to belong to and there are many people on here that
know just about every "in" and "out" of the software and can make it do
things the rest of the list would love to be able to do and they are
constantly learning.

The Gen-newbie list has no off-topic topics. Anything is considered ok. I
get tired of looking through dozens of chicken recipes to find out why my HP
was giving me a problem. Get the pic?

I appreciate that Legacy is an "on-topic" list. I am here to learn about
Legacy and I learn something nearly everyday from people like Ron, Cathy,
Mary, Mike, and Geoff and Sherry (and others I can't think of so quickly)
and I have been using this software for several years and I am still
learning.

RE: [LegacyUG] OT but pertinent IMHO

2007-08-18 Thread Paul A.
Yvonne,
Sadly, one of the items that gets people more “worked up” on this list is
when people send in HTML. The list rules say that all messages need to be
in plain text and no attachments. I have mine set to "plain text" yet when
I reply to one that is HTML, it sends the reply in HTML. If you can, you
might want to switch your emails, on this list to plain text to avoid the
ire of some.

Have a good day.

Cathy,  I agree wholeheartedly with you, so many people are extremely rude,
and do not take into account that there are NEW people on the list, and they
are NEW to Genealogy & all it's offshoots, I also do not post, for fear of
people saying "This Is Not Legacy Related" etc etc.

But I WILL say this, that an email gets extremely long and unwieldy if not
trimmed, especially the Legacy posts as they have such a lot on the end of
their mail.

RE: [LegacyUG] Test

2007-08-17 Thread Paul A.
Mitch,

There was discussion a couple days ago about gmail suddenly "spamming" the
LUG messages. When I checked, I had 109 LUG messages in the spam folder. I
would read a reply and think my memory was really bad because I couldn't
remember the original question or comment being posted. I found them. I
have always had one or two here and there, but then I read in the help where
you need to include the email address in your list of contacts to prevent
them from going to the spam. Now I am back to just one or two a day going
into the spam folder.

Mitch,

I don't do many reports other than the Books type of reports. Until I just
checked things out, I didn't realize that you could only tick the "Age at
Death" on the "Books/Other" reports. Maybe that option should be available
on the other reports as well?

RE: [LegacyUG] County without city

2007-08-16 Thread Paul A.
I replied offline as I do not think this tone of the messages should be on
here. However, the older genealogists should be teaching the newer ones the
correct way to do things so that they become historians and genealogists
rather than name collectors with no regard for standards.

The wonderful thing about Legacy is that it defaults to the correct
standards many times but is also diverse enough to allow people to make
changes. I don't think those changes were meant to have people disregard
the standards and the quality of past historians' works by their adhering to
such accepted standards.

Thank you.

RE: [LegacyUG] County without city

2007-08-16 Thread Paul A.
Mary,

"Places should be recorded by smallest jurisdiction to largest, starting
with the town. U.S. citizens should list the town, then the county, then the
state, then the nation, like so: "Bethesda, Montgomery, Maryland, U.S.A.".
If you know the hospital where someone was born, do not record it here. Any
jurisdiction smaller than the town should be recorded in a separate notes
page or field, or as a footnote in a family group record's Sources field."
Copied from http://www.ancestrylessons.com/rookie/recordin.htm

And these next excerpts from BYU for temple submissions:

"Examples include: "Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA", "St. Dunstan, Canterbury,
Kent, England",
"Victoria, Peel, Ontario, Canada"
"e. If for some reason, you do not know the county (or any of the other
place levels) or the locality does not have one, you would leave it out but
add the comma and space: "Hendersonville, , North Carolina" or "Vancouver, ,
British Columbia, Canada"2,5."
f. You should not include a place level description in the name unless it is
part of the actual name. For example, "Salt Lake City" is correct, but
"Seattle City" and "Utah County" is not.
i. Use the name at the time of the event5. For example, Miami has been in
the following counties, Miami and Miami-Dade. Even though the latter is what
is used at this time, you would use the former if that is what is was called
at the time of the event. Another example is what the USA was called in the
1600s. To be sure, you may have to research boundary changes. If the
placename has changed since then, you can add an explanation to the source5.
j. Some individuals put hospital, cemetery, or other names in the place.
However, it is
recommended to put these names in sources, notes, custom events, or
attributes instead5.
k. Sometimes, especially when dealing with rural areas, you may find a
landmark, farm name, or
other description instead of or in addition to a town or city name.
Especially when the location is not in a town or city, it is okay to include
more information such as "Crawfish Creek (near
Chattanooga), Marion, Tennessee, USA"5. Otherwise, the extra information
should be put in the
source."

Does that answer your question?

That is still the way it had traditionally been. But, in the US you
normally don't use the word "county" or "co". In many places, you could use
the township.

If it is a picture of a headstone, I put in the picture gallery. Otherwise,
I put it in the burial notes. I don't know if that is the best way or not.

Does anyone maintain records about the cemetaries, churchs, and headstones
important to their family within Legacy? If so, how do you to this and how
do you link individuals?

RE: [LegacyUG] Download time for Legacy.

2007-08-09 Thread Paul A.
Valerie,

I, too, produce my own electricity. I have never had a problem with the
computer drawing too much juice. I know that some of the older ones might.
I live in the States and my computer is on about 12 hours per day.

I would do as Bill suggested and put it onto a CD or small drive and send it
to your friend.

RE: [LegacyUG] Pasting with Microsoft Onenote 2007

2007-08-09 Thread Paul A.
I agree with you. One Note is such a versatile tool and I always use most
of the time instead of Word. But, it is only one additional step before the
copy and paste. I don't have a problem with it. Actually, it would be nice
if a program like Legacy could interface with Microsoft Office. That would
be the icing on an already too good cake! lol I still think Legacy to be
the best.

When I paste from Onenote to the research section in Legacy (the notes in an

However, the pasted material does not appear in the chronology section

Pasting from such as Word to Legacy works fine. Also, can paste from

First post to the Forum. I can't see a reference to this problem in the

I have started using Microsoft Onenote for varied tasks including making
notes on screen and writing up my family history research.

When I paste from Onenote to the research section in Legacy (the notes in an

Krisjan,

Yes, you are getting what you paid for and MUCH MUCH more. At least they
are providing the list which they certainly do not have to do and it has
provided people with far more than what it would have been worth if we had
to pay for it. People get things for nothing and still find a reason to
complain. Go figure.

There was a simple request to truncate messages and a very polite and
courteous request at that. Thanks, Mary.

If someone has to pay for the time online or the amount of data downloaded,
then limit the size of emails you can download. Some of the software
clients have that capability. Then you won't have to get so upset when a

Fine! So long as they are prepared to pay me for the excess crap that I

RE: [LegacyUG] Hand held PC and program

2007-07-22 Thread Paul A.
I feel I must reply as I have been through this same thing with another
list. I owned a Dell Axim and recently bought a Palm TX. There are two
main things you need to decide.

First, is genealogy going to be your primary use and function.

Second, is whether money is an osbstacle.

If money is NO obstacle and the primary use is genealogy, by all means go
with a Dell Axim which is rated the best in its "class." The GedStar Pro
doesn't even begin to compare with the Pocket Genealogist. However, Pocket
Genealogist will NOT run on Palm systems.

I think the Palm is a much better piece of equipment. As soon as I held it,
I could tell the difference. The Palm operating system, in my opinion, is
better than the Windows.

So, if money is an obstacle go with the Palm which is actually better
quality but you are stuck with the inferior GedStar Pro. If money is not
obstacle, go with a Dell and use Pocket Genealogist. If you plan to do more
other things than you will genealogy go with the Palm.

As I say, I have experienced both. I loved my Dell Axim...until I got my
Palm TX.
