Re: [LegacyUG] List Archives

2008-09-16 Thread Roger Lewis

11:28am PDT Sept 16

In the archives, I see msg headers in Indonesian/Malay in the top half of
the first page. However, if I click on one of these headers, I get a
LegacyUG message. Translation of the Indonesian msg headers bears no
relation to the actual English subject of the msg. It would appear that the
server has gone berserk.

Further down the page, I see some English language headers, but many of the
messages are blank.

Good morning all,

I just tried to check something on the list archives. The
beginning is all gibberish, then the rest doesn't look
right. Sorry, that's the only way I can think of to
describe it. Could someone take a look and see if
you're getting the same thing.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 6.0 and a USB Flash Drive

2008-05-14 Thread Roger Lewis
Your choice of terminology has led to some confusion.

>From what you describe, it appears you have not 'run' Legacy from a flash
>drive. Data, pictures, sounds, video, et cetera files do not 'run'.
>Legacy.exe 'runs', permitting you to access data etc residing on a flash
>drive (or a floppy or a CD or a DVD or a mini hard drive etc)

Further, I think I can safely say that, of all the people in the LUG who
simply access data residing on a flash drive, you are the only one who has
found it necessary to have U3 software installed on the flash drive.

I have successfully run Legacy from a U3 Sandisk Cruiser 4GB flash drive.
The U3 software MUST be installed on a computer so that you can access your
flash drive.

On your flash drive, create a folder named Legacy. Copy all of your Legacy
files (data, pictures, sounds, video, et cetera) from your computer to the
newly-created Legacy folder on the flash drive. From within the Legacy
program, you can browse to the location of your database on the flash drive to
open it. (Note that Legacy MUST be installed on the computer you are using
with your flash drive. You can copy the Legacy setup file to your flash drive
so that you can install Legacy on other computers.)

When I get home, I then use other 3-party software to sync the Legacy
database on the flash drive with the primary Legacy database on my computer.
That way both databases are current.

Re: [LegacyUG] digitized articles and books

2007-04-12 Thread Roger Lewis

I interpret your query to mean that you want to be able to go to a SINGLE
source/search engine, enter the name of a book and, if that book is
digitized and available online somewhere, get a response so indicating.
Unfortunately, you cannot do so.

Some digitized books can be located at http://books.google.com and the list
is growing daily. However, many digitized books can only be located
and accessed through databases/catalogs that are not searched by Google or
other search engines. Examples are PERSI, the Family History Archive at
Brigham Young University, University of Michigan Digital Library, Cornell
University Library Windows on the Past, Godfrey Memorial Library and, I am
sure, many more.

And, it is surprising to me that Cyndi's List does not have a section
containing links to sites providing access to digitized books (or did I miss
it?)

Re: [LegacyUG] USB "thumb drives"

2007-04-04 Thread Roger Lewis

I have Legacy running installed to and running from a flash drive.

In order to do this, one must first install MojoPac to the thumbdrive.
(www.mojopac.com) Legacy on a Mojopac enabled thumb drive will run from
any WinXP SP2 computer, with the following exception -

There is a limitation. In order for Legacy to run in this manner requires
that one be logged on to the host computer through an account with
administrative rights. Without going into a discussion of administrative
rights, suffice to say that chances are that the default logon on the PC of
friends and relatives will have administrative rights enabled. And chances
are that you probably will NOT be able to logon with administrative rights
to PCs in libraries, genealogical societies and so forth.

Sherry says "There needs to be certain Windows system files on the hard
drive in order for Legacy to work and when you install the program on the
thumb drive, that won't happen." Mojopac enables Legacy to have access to
the necessary Windows system files on the hard drive of the host computer.

Janis,

Legacy needs to be installed on the computer's hard drive. There needs to
be

certain Windows system files on the hard drive in order for Legacy to work
and when you install the program on the thumb drive, that won't happen.

Sure, you could install it on the thumb drive while it's plugged on your
computer and it will work just fine because the Windows system files will
be

updated. But if you take it to a computer that's never had Legacy
installed, then more likely than not, it won't run.

Various methods are coming out now to run programs on a thumb drive, but
the

programmers need to work with the developer of those methods (i.e., U3) to
get the program to work. Having Legacy compatible with one of those
methods is on the enhancement request list.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Russ,
I do not doubt your experience but bear in mind that there are various
versions of Windows XP.
Not only is there the Home and Pro versions but also the full and OEM. Mine
for example is the Home OEM.
I am aware that one version (I think it is XP Pro) has a repair option which
is not available on other versions and certainly not on OEM versions.

For all I know there may be variations from country to country as well.

On the Version I have I do not have the option to repair nor the option keep
the directory system intact.
As I would imagine most people have the OEM version it is much safer to
assume that nothing will survive a reinstallation of Windows.

Although I keep backups on my HD I also regularly back-up to CD of all
important files for extra safety.

Ron,
This happened to me but, I have reinstalled windows with the option to
keep

the directory system intact so even though I reloaded windows my data was
still intact in the other folders, however the documents that I had in
MyDocuments folder was not recoverable. Once I reloaded windows and
reinstalled the programs I was able to utilize the data that was in their
own directory folders and not the MyDocuments folder. Just relaying what I
found when it happened to me so. I allways keep important files in their
own

directory other than a windows system folder. I also have an external hard
drive and a laptop. I backup to C: then use Windows SyncToy to
syncronize

my genealogy folder, my email, and my financial data to the external drive
so what is on the external drive. Then I use SyncToy on my laptop to
syncronize the laptop with the external drive. So I have at least 3 copies

I subscribe to the free version of Dick Eastman's newsletter and he
recommended a web site where you can save up to 2GB of information for
free - this data would be saved off site, so presumably your Legacy
data would remain safe in the event of catastrophy.

To sign up for the free 2 gigabytes of storage or for the $4.95/month
unlimited storage option, go to http://mozy.com/?kbid=7017.

Every time you update your Legacy file, the Mozy backup storage
software would recognize that you changed the data, and would
automatically upload it offsite at some point. This Mozy option is
only recommended for people with broadband connections, however, and
users of Windows XP (not Linux).

The complete article by Dick Eastman is here:

Re: [LegacyUG] install Legacy program and files to jump drive

2006-12-29 Thread Roger Lewis

Instructions are at http://www.mojopac.com/portal/content/how/use.jsp , but
since they are rather brief, I will amplify -

With the thumb drive with MojoPac plugged in, you should be capable of
toggling back and forth between MojoPac mode and HostPC mode. While in
HostPC mode, copy the Legacy Full Setup program (which, presumably, you have
previously downloaded) to the thumbdrive. Toggle to MojoPac mode. Find and
run the Legacy Full Setup program in MojoPac mode, which will install all
the Legacy components needed to run in MojoPac mode. (Paul Abell's problem
is that he tried to install from his PC, not from within MojoPac mode.) At
this point, you start entering data to create a Legacy data file, or you get
an existing data file from your PC.

To bring over an existing data file, toggle to HostPC mode, find your Legacy
folder, and copy the Data folder (under Legacy) to the Data folder on your
thumb drive under the Legacy folder. You may want to copy some .usr files
also. Toggle back to MojoPac mode. Start Legacy and you should be in
business. Enter your customer number to upgrade to Deluxe, just as you did
on your HostPC.

I have probably forgotten something - if so, let me know.

Don't forget that the data file you create or update running Legacy on your
thumb drive exists only on your thumb drive. You have to copy it over to
your PC if you want the data there.

Finally, for the record, I am running Legacy Deluxe v6.0.0.118 on a thumb
drive.

The Legacy6Setup.exe file which is in the Legacy folder is the same as the
"Install from the Web" file and not the full setup file. To run that file
you will need access to the internet as it goes back to our website to
complete the install.

Re: [LegacyUG] Run Legacy on a Flash Drive

2006-12-26 Thread Roger Lewis

Portable Apps requires that the application (Legacy for instance) be
modified to run in the Portable Apps environment. The modification
instructions are on their website. Since it requires modification, there
are Legacy licensing issues to consider, as well as the technical knowledge
required. The same is true of Ceedo and U3, which are other portable
application environments. MojoPac requires no modification of the
application.

By the way, I have Legacy Standard v. 6.0.0.118 running in MojoPac "as we
speak". I will try out Legacy Deluxe tomorrow.

Incidentally, MojoPac takes about 69 mb of your thumbdrive space. Add
Legacy and you are up to 159 mb before adding any of your data files.

Also, I notice that some flash drives seem faster than others. My SanDisk
Cruzer seems faster than my Lexar Traveler and my PNY Attache.

[LegacyUG] Run Legacy on a Flash Drive

2006-12-26 Thread Roger Lewis
Legacy WILL run from a flash drive. I have basic Legacy installed on a
flash drive and it runs just fine.

You install MojoPac (www.mojopac.com) on your flash drive, then install (not
copy) Legacy to your flash drive. All files required to run Legacy are
installed on the flash drive. And no traces are left on the host computer.

The only limitation (to be fixed in the next release) is that the person
logged on to the host computer (the one into which you plug the flash drive)
must have administrative rights. This is normally the case with your PC and
your friends & relatives PCs. However, administrative rights normally will
not be available to you on PCs at your library or genealogical societies and
the like.

Myrna,

Legacy doesn't run directly from the flash drive. There are files that
Legacy depends on that might not be on a computer unless it has Legacy
already installed.

I keep the Legacy6Setup.exe file on my flash drive and can install it on
any

computer as the standard version of Legacy.

Mary:

I'm feeling a bit vague on the details. What information does he want,
what is his relationship with you, and what is the money supposed to be
for? Not, you need to tell me, but these things make a difference.

It would make a difference to me what "personal" information he wants.
Family health history that is critcally important to him, that you don't
happen to want to share, or your living peoples' exact dates and places of
birth? Also, how closely is he related to you? Is he your first
cousin, who has known you since you were kids, or is he a distant cousin?
How closely related is he to the elderly person who gave you the
information you don't want to share? Does he have another way to get the
information, and is the information of critical importance to him; say,
information about genetic illness in the family?

In the former case, I 'd say if you don't want to answer the question
you're the one with something wrong with you, but you always have the
right to say no, and the most important thing is not to outright lie to
him, ie, no, noone in our family has ever had an illness they've had.
I've had more respect for relatives who said that to me than the ones who
lied.

If you really think the person who told you personal information that is
crititcal information that should be shared didn't want it shared, you can
always try the approach I am using at the moment in such a situation. I
am trying the this person won't live forever approach. In the meantime,
I told my brother in law that I ahve information he does need to have if
something should happen to both me and his mother (the source of ... the
identity of her parents... talk about pulling out hair!)I really think
that if your source is 90 years old and in frail health, your information
will be yours to do with as you choose within a few years. ;)

In the latter case, I say no once, occasionally twice, if it is someone
who I know who it is; and if they press, I ignore them. I have had
people who thought they just should have that info for their database. It
is an actual theory of how to gather data on a family group, that personal
identifying information should be collected and published on living
people. Oh well, too bad.It is not wise nor safe to give out
identifying information on living people, particularly address and exact
dates of birth and marriage. You can't make him stop contacting you, but
you can ignore him, and the odds are, if you don't respond to him, he'll
eventually give up. I've never had anyone be QUITE this persistent, and
everyone I have ignored dropped it after one more try.

As for the money, what is it for?Is it a bribe?A payment for
something you did for him? You can certain turn it down if you aren't
comfortable taking it. Did he send a large amount of cash, in which
case he is definitely nuts, or a check? If a check, tear it up and
forget about it. If cash or money order, send it back adn tell him any
further mail you get from him will go in the trash unopened, no matter
what it contains. I've taken that approach with both people, and companies
I'd ended relations with.

I'm not saying this is the case, but if you should get a really funny
feeling about him or if his behavior worries you, write him a letter (or
e-mail) telling him to never contact you again or you will file
appropriate criminal complaints, send it certified and get a receipt of
mailing it as well, and of course keep a copy.If he keeps it up,
repeatedly phones or e-mails you, visits you after you told him to leave
you alone, or threatens you, you can file various charges.I mean that
if he is genuinely scaring you, not just because you don't like what he is
asking for.

You are limited in your ability to tell him not to bother someone ELSE,
but your ability to intervene grows if the other person is frail or
disabled, or confined to a nursing home.

Libraries and genealogical societies most often subscribe to
Ancestry Library Edition, which limits access to some of Ancestry's features (as
compared to the features available when an individual subscribes).
Libraries used to be able to subscribe to Ancestry Plus (for an extra fee,

Re: [LegacyUG] Screen Shots

2006-10-15 Thread Roger Lewis
The last couple of suggestions make it sound like you need Excel or
WordPerfect. Not so. If you have a Windows PC, you should have a program
called WordPad.

(For those not familiar with it, WordPad is a simple word processor that
is/was included with almost all versions of Microsoft Windows from Windows
95 upwards. It is more advanced than Notepad, but nowhere near as advanced
as Microsoft Word. It originated in Windows 3.1 as Write.)

After pressing "Prnt Screen", open a new document in WordPad, and:

- Using the menus, select Edit, then Paste
 or
- Click on the Paste icon
 or
- Right mouse click and select Paste.

Possibly you will have to resize the image after it is pasted into WordPad
in order to prevent the right edge from being cut off. This is easily done
by using your mouse to grab the right edge of the image and dragging it to
the left a little bit.

[LegacyUG] Run Legacy from USB Device

2006-10-14 Thread Roger Lewis

It can be done!  I am running the latest version of
Legacy Family Tree from a 4G USB microdrive.  I can plug it into any PC
running WinXP SP2 and run Legacy.  (Well, anyway, I have tried 3 PCs.)
Works great.

The secret is MojoPac  at   http://www.mojopac.com  (30 day free
trial)

MojoPac creates an environment that gives the
appearance of being a virtual operating system on the USB device.  As
a result, for instance, to preview or print reports from Legacy, you have to
install a printer driver within MojoPac.

You cannot access your hard drive while in MojoPac - your USB
device becomes your C: drive.  But if you need a file from your hard drive,
you click a button in MojoPac and you are back to your normal interface. Copy
the desired file to your USB device, click the MojoPac toggle button and you can
access the file from MojoPac or from any application running in
MojoPac.

The MojoPac installation, Legacy and my family files take up
about 145mb so conceivably you could run Legacy from a memory key (thumb drive,
or whatever you want to call it) as small as 256mb

Internet Explorer runs fine within MojoPac and Legacy
within MojoPac seems to connect to the internet fine if an internet connection
is available on the host computer.

Check it out.  Hope it works for you, but your mileage
may vary.  It is possible that this evaluation is worth exactly what you
paid for it.

Jan,

I've found the quickest way to determine who an email came from was to
click

on "Reply" to see who it's replying to!

Filters aren't 100%. Most emails go to the folder that they're supposed
to,

but some that stay in the inbox and a *copy* is sent to the folder,
duplicates of some emails stay in the inbox and some never get filtered at
all!

I've given up trying to figure it all out

Thanks for using Legacy.

Hi Sherry,
C.G Ouimet emailed me privately to point out that the message was
addressed

to the list, not me individually (I hadn't noticed this) - and as I
responded to him, something strange has happened. I filter my messages so
anything with LegacyUG in the subject goes to my Legacy Folder. Every
LegacyUG message before and after the one from Ron has gone straight to
Legacy. Ron's is still sitting in my general inbox. I would probably
have

thought twice about it if it hadn't begun Hi Jan

Cheers,
Jan

Re: [LegacyUG] Reminder About Etiquette

2006-07-22 Thread Roger Lewis

Security problems with HTML -

Outlook Express uses Microsoft Internet Explorer to display HTML messages in
Outlook Express. Consequently, when one is viewing an HTML message, one is
exposed to all the security issues present in IE. Some ne'er-do-well can
exploit this to his/her advantage.

Furthermore, ne'er-do-wells can place an invisible tracking bug in an HTML
message. Without going into the mechanics, the tracking bug lets the sender
know that the message was opened, thereby confirming that the email address
to which the message was sent is in fact a valid email address with someone
reading messages. Therefore, that email address is valuable to spammers and
will be sold.

Outlook Express 6 (and OE5?) permit the user to require all messages to
display in plain text, even if they were sent as HTML. Earlier versions of
Outlook Express did not have that option, so email recipients had no control
as to whether they were at risk.

Other people's comments on other problems have already been discussed and
are in the archives.

Roger

I guess I don't understand the problem with HTML in the messages. Would
someone explain. I like the HTML.

Mike,
I am sure you are rather "miffed" but perhaps you are misdirecting your
blame for the problem. The REAL culprit is the mail-server that is
allowing

it to be passed through to us.
Don
