To be blunt, I've been disappointed with the tenor of some recent postings
on this list. So I am going to propose a New Year's resolution. If you
have
a question or an objection regarding the appropriateness of a posting, send
your concerns **off-list** to the list administrator and let that person
make

What you might do is enter the book information (Publisher, Date of

Hope that helps.

Would a published book be verifiable? I can verify that what I have

  Katrina,
Verified means in the source field that you have checked the source and have
verified that what is entered is correct.
I also use the Verified in the place name fields when there is a dicrepency
in a city name that is no longer in the original county and I have duplicate
place names with different counties or states. That way when I go through
and clean up the master list for locations I don't merge them or delete them
by mistake and I have verified that the place existed at one time. I also
put the chronology of the location in the notes field if I have to make it
  more clear.

Arnold,
Look at the date/time sequence of the messages in question. I think you'll
see that Ted didn't reply to your message. If I read things correctly, Ted
did exactly what you did - used Geoff Rasmussens' original 6.0.0.117
announcement message. So, to be pedantic, you both hijacked Geoff's
message :-)

To others that are wondering about the use of the terms kidnapping and
hijacking of threads. This occurs when people are not particularly careful
in their haste to start a new thread and inadvertently(?) reply to
whatever it was that the last message they were reading was. When they
reply to an existing message, their message, possibly under the guise of a
new, totally unrelated subject, becomes part of an existing thread. If
they were to have written a new message, a new thread would have been
started.

This happens far too often on this list and tends to muck up the message
threading. Please note, proper threading does NOT happen on the contents
of the message subject field. It happens through a normally unseen message
header (part of the message envelope if you like). When you reply to a
message, your reply contains a reference to the message that you are
replying to. This reference is used by all decent email clients (not
web-based email necessarily) to maintain the sequence of messages and
replies.

Re: [LegacyUG] Duplication of children

2006-11-29 Thread Theodore Rissmiller
Thank you, Brian, I found the error, and one of the situations was a case
where there was only one set of parents, but somehow they showed up in
Legacy a second time, married to each other and linked to the children, but
I had only entered the data once, and did not mark half children for them,
as there were no half children. But when I unlinked the offending parent,
it automatically dissappeared, I didn't even have to delete it.

Ted,

Are you talking about the listing of children in the Family View when you
see those names with the mother's given name? If so look for a 1/2 in
front of the child's name. What Legacy is showing are children of another
marriage for the husband (if a mother's name is shown) or the wife (if you
see a father's name). You can turn off the view of these 1/2 children by
right clicking on any child's name and selecting view show 1/2 kids.

It also seems that you have attached these children to two sets of
parents. The birth parents and to the husband and a second wife. When you
do that Legacy will include the children twice, once for each family of
which they are a part.

I glanced through the attachment but since I am not familiar with the
names in your family and you did not say where in the report the
duplication occurred I did not immediately identify the duplicates.

In most reports you can choose not to repeat duplicate lines. The option
is on the Format Tab of the Report Options. The name at the top of the
duplicate line will be repeated and will be cross-referenced back to the
original point in the report where the full line appears.

I have just recently have a problem that came up with my copy of Legacy
6.0.0.110. It is taking the listing of children under SOME of the
parents and duplicating it, but adding the mother's given name behind
each of the children's listing. But when I bring up the child,
everything looks normal until I go to print a report of any kind, where
it again lists the children a second time, and if it is any of the tree
charts, it lists it as a second branch for each of the children and their
decendency (but without the mother's name). An example is attached of
just one of the occurences. Has anyone had this happen? How can I fix
this without having to replace all the data? Some of these duplications
are several generations back, and I found that if I try to unlink to
delete, it messes the entire tree up. Help???

I was very excited just recently to discover the option to use Cremation -
how long has it been there? I have must have missed the notification of it
along the way. I was in hospital at the bginning of the year so maybe it
was then??

I would also now like the option to use Dedication in the
Baptism/Christening field so I guess I should go and put in a suggestion.

There are no problems that I know of with Legacy, as I used IE7 with the

When this is added to the Marriage Information screen, perhaps there should
also be a married name field for the husband as well as the wife. Some
husbands take a hyphenated surname when they marry.

This is a very interesting, and helpful, discussion.

Personally, I would like to see several articles describing the
different approaches used and the reasons for the chosen approach.
This would be similar to how we have been given 4 (different)
approaches for organizing your paper files.

On 10/12/06, Bob [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

The proper place to enter information will vary from one user to
another. There is NO logical conclusion that will work for everyone.
The extreme flexibility provided in Legacy is one its strongest points.
Each user must decide on their own standards and then learn to stick to
them when entering their data.

a user should not have to discover logical entry paths from scratch
when a few guidelines would suggest a logical way to do something and
avoid a lot of unnecessary rework.
But the user MUST decide for himself which method to use to get his
desired results. Others who want different results will have to use
different methods. As Elizabeth is constantly reminding us, you must
decide what you want your output to look like before you can figure out
how to enter your input. I didn't do that initially, and after finally
checking a bunch of the reports, I had to go back and adjust a lot of my
data to create output that I could live with.

It now seems clear to me that census is best not used as an event, but
obviously that is not automatically evident to a new user
That may work for you, but it is not a universal answer that will serve
every new user well. As above, it depends totally on what you want to
see in your output.

Alastair,

Open Office reads the Legacy rtf files including the embedded
headers/footers/paragraph etc. The pictures are not properly placed but
can easily be moved and text canb be word wrapped around them using their
styles. I have a Blog on my site which gives details on how to do this.
The great thing is that OOo is free (but a big, big download!). Anyone
thinking of downloading it may prefer to wait a short while as a new
version is imminent. It is of course, FOC.

Subject: [LegacyUG] RTFs, PDFs and layouts

We corresponded awhile ago on this; the problem was that whilst the
layouts of pdf reports are fine, if one has some tidying to do and
first goes to an rtf, the picture layouts and captions are somewhat
haphazard - lotta work to put right. The second issue is that the
Legacy pdfs don't have properly embedded fonts.

I downloaded InCtrl5 as Dave suggested, and Legacy creates
(unsurprisingly) various temporary files in the windows temporary
directory. The pictures are clear to see, but the text is in a format
that I cannot decipher. So I got hardly anywhere with that.

If one exports the Legacy pdf from Acrobat 6 professional, one has
funny layouts wherever one goes - to html, rtf, word etc. In none of
them does the text wrap round the pictures, some children are in
tables etc. Very curious. Someone said that Wordperfect handled
pictures better than Word, so I guess I'll be onto ebay soon for a
copy.

I had a letter from Sherry at Millennium, who said:-

I do know that Dave's working on reports - I'll pass the comments on
about
the rtf files to see if there's anything he can do about it. I do see
what

you're saying about the placement of the caption and description.

As for the pdf, there's nothing we can do since it's part of the print
preview package created by another company. I have no idea where the
preview is stored. Maybe we can get some feedback on that when we report
the

issue with the pictures in the rtf. I usually don't hear anything back
from the programmers on these things and never know what's been worked
on until a build is released!

Well, whatever. I'll keep looking, and hope to come up with something
useful, but I suspect we're in the programmer's hands

Warm regards :-)

Not to cause a problem, but for those who CAN afford it, in areas where high
speed access does not seem to be available, have you considered satellite
connection? I could not get a local high speed connection, even today, but
have installed a satellite connection and found it to be worth it's weight
in gold. It may not be quite as fast as some high speed connections, but it
is at least 10 times faster than dial-up is.

I was told my Legacy support that
the Legacy User Group might be able to help me.

  First a little background. A
couple of months ago we had major computer problems and ended up getting a new
hard drive. The date from the old hard drive had been backed up on an
external drive. When installing the software again I discovered that I did not
have my copy of FTM 2006. I did still have a copy of FTM 2005. I
contacted Legacy to find out if I purchased there program would I have any
problem importing to Legacy my FTM 2005 and FTM 2006 files. I was told,
  incorrectly, that I would not.

I am able to take any of the files
that were updated to FTM 2005 and export them to a GEDCOM file and then import
to Legacy. Since I don’t have the software for FTM2006, I can’t import
to Legacy. These are the files I am currently working on. The
individual at tech support suggested that someone on the list might have FTM
2006 and would be able to convert the files for me.

Any help that can be given I
  appreciate deeply

If you want a place to share information with your family, try
  www.MyFamily.com

It gives you ready made places for sharing a database, uploading
pictures,
chats, sharing information, etc. Then you can keep your database clean
and

  separate.
Then you could have your data on a separate web site which you control.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Setting up family history web site with Legacy

I am in the process of trying to create a family history web site. I
asked

Legacy Family Tree advice on how to set it up. One of the things they
suggested was ask the Legacy User Group for advice.

My goal is to have something that is very user friendly for my different
family members to communicate and share family history. I like the
Legacy

Family Tree software program and I am hoping to be able to use it, along
with Macromedia software such as Dreamweaver, to set up the web page
databases and interactive capabilities--in essence, giving family
members
around the world the capability to work on family history projects
together,

in real time and with seamless work compatibility. I want all family
members to have access to documents and images, which will be digitized
or

hyperlinked and stored on our own server. This way our documentation is
available as well as the individual and family statistics. For instance,
we

have family bulletins, family stories, pictures, certificates, tax and
census records that we would like our children and grandchildren to have
easy access. We would have journalling and personal history sharing
capability, and the all important research logs. It will have several
user
defined security levels to protect their individual, family, and
extended
family privacy, while still making other appropriate information
available

  to the public.

Any advice you can give me would surely be appreciated.

  Thanks,
  Eileen Lentz

Re: [LegacyUG] Dallas, Texas User Group

2006-08-09 Thread Theodore Rissmiller

Check with RootsWeb.com. They haveuser groups in just about
every state. I know it's not LUG, but most of the members might just be
  LUG members also.
As for the cild/descendent problem, this was just covered recently in
this LUG, and can be found at the LUG page.

Group

Does anyone know of a user
group for the Dallas, Texas area? I didn't notice one on the homepage
list.

I'm giving myself a migraine
trying to create a book for an upcoming family reunion. I only need
one copy for a special relative. I've given up on the Publishing Center and
about to give up and use whatever I can get together:( I used the
Descendants Narrative, but it gives chapters by generation, I want the
chapters on the children, all the descendants of that child included in that
chapter, and have the Table of Contents show the Chapter Number or Child's
name.way beyond my brainpower

What is Registered and
Non-Registered? What is the difference?

Thanks for any
suggestions:)

Re: [LegacyUG] Gedcom

2006-08-08 Thread Theodore Rissmiller

The way that I did mine was to do a back-up of my data from my desktop,
and then after installing Legacy 6.0 on my laptop, I did a restore to the
laptop. All files were there exactly as they were on the desktop.

Re: [LegacyUG] REPORTS - FULL NAME

2006-07-26 Thread Theodore Rissmiller

I have found that if I bring the individual up in the family mode and
then go to the report mode I usually find the individual's name in the box
near the bottom of the report screen. If theirname is in that
block, it will print on the report. If it is not, it will not print,
  instead ([FullName]) prints.

Subject: [LegacyUG] REPORTS - FULL
NAME

When I create a report and have the name of the
featured individual in the slot next to "Record Selection" I am told that
the title for the report will be, let's say, "Family Group Record for [Full
Name]" --
SOMETIMES when the report is then
created/printed is has the name of the featured individual instead of the
words "[Full Name]" so that the heading reads, e.g. "Family Group Record for
John Doe"
At other time I get a report that just puts in
the "[Full Name]" instead of the individual's name, e.g., "Family Group
Record for [Full Name]"

Can somebody explain the discrepancy and how I
can get the individual's name to appear without actually retyping it in or
copying it.

(As usual, I HOPE this makes sense, but don't
feel I'm explaining very clearly.)

Not
necessarily. You have to make the backup to your C: drive first – then
copy the resultant file to your CD. The only program that I know of
that allows direct storage of a Legacy Backup to CD is Roxio Easy CD
Creator.

  Carol,

  I don't know what
version of Windows you are using, but if it is Win XP then, in Explorer,
right click on you CD drive and select Properties, select the Recording
tab and check the box 'Enable CD recording on this
  drive'

 I may be stupid

I am at a loss as to what I can do. I currently have to back up
